Directors, Susan will be responsible for all financial matters across the business as well as Governance and Compliance, HR and IT. Susan has previously worked in a number of senior leadership positions within the construction sector, so brings extensive relevant experience, and a strong appreciation of Blue’s business categories. Specifically, Susan has worked for Finning International a Caterpillar dealer, Hewden Stuart the major plant hirer company, and Cogen who build power stations for the Waste to Energy industry. She has extensive commercial and corporate governance experience, working in both a corporate and private equity environment. She has also worked on a number of major strategic projects in her career; including ERP implementations, acquisitions and disposals, and delivery of efficiency programs. Having been in the role at Blue Group since the start of the year, much of Susan’s time has initially been spent visiting the different Blue offices to understand the various processes. Susan commented “Presently it’s mostly about analysing the current financial procedures within the business and of course potentially identifying any changes that could have an immediate positive impact on the business from an economical perspective.

In the longer term, the focus is on making The Group more ‘joined up’. Bringing increased synergy to The Group will make us more efficient and ultimately more proficient, which, in turn, will allow us to focus on what really matters, the customer.” The governance and compliance element of the role will involve ensuring best practice, placing Blue Group as a leader within this area. IT is also likely to take up much of Susan’s time as the business is currently implementing SAP across The Group. Something Susan is looking to achieve by the end of 2018.

We are delighted to have Susan onboard. Not only does she possess an abundance of financial experience, but the sectors in which she has previously worked are very closely aligned with Blue Group. This is an exceptionally exciting time for the business and it’s good to know we have someone of Susan’s calibre within the Senior Team to help us meet our ambitious growth plans. Adrian Murphy, CEO at Blue Group and Bruce Murray, Founder of Murray Plant

Blue Group acquire Murray Plant, exclusive Rammer Hammer dealer for UK Blue Group have announced the purchase of Murray Plant, who are the sales agents for a variety of attachment brands including Rammer. Murray Plant has been supplying equipment to the construction, mining, demolition and quarrying industries for almost 30 years, having been set up in 1988 by Bruce Murray. The business therefore has a wealth of product knowledge and has developed strong relationships with their customer base, which will be retained by Blue Group, as both Bruce and Fergal O’Neill, who is responsible for sales at Murray Plant will be continuing with their roles, but under the Blue Group corporate umbrella.

We are delighted to have completed the acquisition of Murray Plant, taking us into the attachments sector, which sits well alongside our current product portfolio. Murray Plant also offer sales, hire, service and spare parts on their range of plant equipment, which is similar to Blue Group’s business model for the other brands of machinery we sell. This means the business will integrate nicely, particularly as a lot of our customers are also customers of Murray Plant. Adrian Murphy, CEO at Blue Group

The Rammer Range of equipment not only includes their world renowned hydraulic breaker line but also a full range of attachments for the construction, demolition, scrap and recycling sectors. These include rotating pulverisers, shears, crackers and grabs for machines weighing 3 tonnes up to 120 tonnes. These high end attachments perfectly compliment the Rammer breaker range.

This agreement with Blue Group will no doubt increase the distribution and sales of these outstanding products over the coming years, as well as providing increased exposure of the brands within the marketplace. We have an exceptionally strong collection of attachments, of which we are the exclusive UK supplier, and this deal will allow us to demonstrate this equipment to a wider audience. It also means even greater support to our existing customers as Blue will further increase stock levels of spare parts, plus have new equipment at each of their offices located throughout the UK. Bruce Murray, Founder of Murray Plant

With nationwide depots and unrivalled coverage, Blue will be looking to recruit further sales personnel for this new area of the business. In the short term, customers will notice very little change. All sales enquiries should continue to go through Fergal O’Neill.

The Basic 518 Trommel A new entry level screen from Doppstadt With the Basic 518 trommel screen, Doppstadt has created a solution for small and medium municipal environmental service providers and recycling plants on the market. The innovation has got exactly what is required for a first step into the separation of materials.

The basic and efficient solution For businesses looking for a basic, yet efficient solution for the screening of materials, the Doppstadt product range now includes a machine concentrating on what matters most, but with retrofitting possibilities where required. The Basic 518 separates mixtures of organic substances, garbage and soil into a fine and an oversize fraction. It has been developed for applications in smaller enterprises or recycling plants for the separation of compost, green waste and waste wood or for the separation of sand, gravel and soils in the recovery of construction materials.

The Process The basic model is equipped with high-quality Doppstadt components and is driven by a powerful CAT engine, which complies with Tier 4i emissions. The feeding hopper accommodates four cubic meters of material, which is separated in to two fractions and discharged by the rear and front conveyor. The fines are discharged directly to the front side by a long lower conveyor, the oversize is discharged by a rear conveyor, which can be changed from right to left. The compact design facilitates the machine operation and reduces maintenance. For more than the standard equipment, the basic solution can easily be retrofitted to meet present or future requirements.

Easy transportation Transportation of the Basic 518 screen is also easy. The machine is designed for container shipment, it fits in a standardized 40 ft high cube sea freight container and can be transported anywhere by low loader easily, safely and quickly. Just detach the rear conveyor, put it in the trommel and retract the supports. The Basic 518 is available to order now through Blue Group in the UK.

The new Fuchs machine is the MHL340, a sub 30 tonne machine with a 129kW engine and a reach of over 13m, now employed to process some of the 400 tonnes of non-ferrous material which comes in to the Crow Metals business every week.

Crow Metals purchases

second Fuchs Material Handler Crow Metals, is a 4th generation family business, which was originally set up by W. Wakefield in 1943 who was known as ‘Tiny’ due to being close to 7ft tall. The scrap processing and recycling specialists have always been based in Romford, Essex, but just over 5 years ago moved to a purpose built 2 acre site, incorporating two 50 tonne weighbridges and two 3 tonne platform scales. Today Crow Metals is run by ‘Tiny’s’ great grandson Joe Wakefield, employs around 25 full time members of staff and is currently enjoying a period of rapid growth.

8

When the company first moved in to their new site in 2012, they purchased a Fuchs MHL335 Material Handler, which is not only still working daily at the site, but has only suffered one breakdown in that 5 year period. Joe recalls how it was dealt with by Blue Fuchs, “The engineer who knew the machine inside out, was there within 3 hours and we were back up and running in no time at all. The cranes are the lifeblood of the business. Take the crane away and the yard does not work, so we were very grateful for such a prompt response.”

and powerful as they are precise. Furthermore, the advanced cab offers exceptional vision, up to 5.6m above ground level through panoramic windows, so the operator can see inside the trailers being loaded. Comfort is also a key point of differentiation on the Fuchs to other material handlers. The machine comes with an air cushioned seat, intuitive multifunctional touch screen display and air conditioning, because if the operator is comfortable, output is increased.

The new machine is the MHL340, a sub 30 tonne machine with a 129kW engine and a reach of over 13m. Dual-circuit hydraulics with low power dissipation ensure that slewing manoeuvres are as swift

Currently the machine is processing some of the 400 tonnes of nonferrous material which comes in to the business each and every week, which is incidentally matched by a further 400 tonnes of ferrous. The

We have experienced drivers here, who have driven a lot of machines and they really like the Fuchs. rolled aluminium derived from windows as well as signage is loaded in to a shear baler by the new MHL340, where it is boxed and sent out via lorries to a variety of locations as far as Australia. The scrap comes in to the business via a variety of channels. The business has grown over the years by taking material from door trade suppliers such as builders, plumbers and roofers, as well as a factory collection service and site clearances. Recent expansion however is through merchant trade. Crow have developed strong relationships as well as overseas supply routes due to their long history in the sector, meaning their competitors in previous years are now their customers, as they bring in their metal for joint distribution overseas. www.blue-group.com

The TAURUS ACH773 shear baler incorporates the original TAURUS BLULINE twin ‘swinging wings system’ with over stroke function on both wings utilising wear resistant Swedish Hardox steel, which increases the density of the scrap metal and significantly minimises frictional wear within the squeeze box.

Shortt Recycling Purchase First Taurus Shear Baler from Blue Group Shortts Recycling, a family run business with a long heritage in scrap metal recycling, have been the first company in the UK and Ireland to purchase a Taurus Shear Baler from Blue Group, after doing the deal with Blue Equipment Ireland. The scrap specialists who are located in Armagh, Northern Ireland have purchased the ACH773 shear baler to process the numerous types of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals that comes in from across both Northern Ireland and the Republic. The Shortt family have been in the scrap metal business for many years. Presently the company is headed up by father Jim and son Anthony. The TAURUS ACH773 is a shear baler which is built on a single piece frame, eliminating the requirement for expensive foundations. As with all models in the ACH range, the 773 incorporates the original TAURUS

BLULINE twin “swinging wings system” with over stroke function on both wings. The over stroke function increases the density of the scrap metal while also significantly minimising frictional wear within the squeeze box. The internal surface of the squeeze box, as well as the internal and external surfaces of the wings, is comprised of wear resistant Swedish Hardox steel, which is notably thicker than competitor machines in its class. A further feature of these industry leading machines is how well the vital components of the shear baler are protected, being housed in metal casing. Furthermore the shear blades offer ‘4 turns’ rather than the

standard 2, meaning the wear parts last much longer, which obviously reduces ongoing costs. The machine is already proving its worth as an integral part of the site after just a few weeks, producing up to 20 tonnes of bales per hour. It isn’t however just it’s processing power that is impressing Anthony Shortt, as he commented, “We take in all different kinds of scrap as we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of services to our customers. The baler, with its advanced remote control system means it can go from producing bales to shearing heavy scrap consisting of different lengths to suit the different needs of our consumers within a few seconds and without moving from my cab.” The build quality of the equipment is also immediately obvious, with there being no vibrations or movement, even when the shear baler is dealing with really heavy scrap. In fact, previously the company had to pre-treat much of the heavy scrap that came in, whereas now, the baler can handle everything making the yard much more efficient. The machine which has three cylinders on both wings, offering an impressive 400 tonnes of force each, was built within less than a week at the yard, with TAURUS sending over a specialist engineer to work with those from Blue Ireland. Describing the support received from TAURUS, Anthony said, “We did have a few teething problems after the engineer left, but I called them up in Italy and they were able to connect remotely to do some fine tuning. What was really impressive though

Shortts are a very forward thinking business, always looking for ways to support their customer base and make their business more efficient and productive. As we would expect, they carefully analysed the shear baler market before purchase, illustrating the superior quality of TAURUS as it was their equipment that came out on top. Liam Brophy, Sales Director at Blue Ireland

was that they are 3 hours in front and the engineer was at home having finished for the day, but it wasn’t a problem and he sorted everything out there and then” The TAURUS Bluline, range of shear balers as well as the Blackline shear balers and Redline scrap pre-shredders are available in the UK and Ireland exclusively through Blue Group.

EvoQuip Colt 600 small enough to fit inside a container for transport but strong enough to withstand the toughest of applications.

This years event took place on 17th and 18th January at the East of England Show-ground, Peterborough, PE2 6XE. Unfortunately, the second day was cancelled due to damage caused by severe weather. During the show Blue had a variety of machinery on show including the EvoQuip Colt 600, the NEW Doppstadt BASIC 518 Trommel Screen as well as a Muldy 3500 Pick Up.

EvoQuip Colt 600 The EvoQuip Colt 600’s hopper capacity is 3m3 and can take a feed size of up to 300mm. The machine has been specifically designed for operators for whom versatility, manoeuvrability and transportability are of key importance. As it is small enough to fit inside a container for transport but strong enough to withstand the toughest of applications.

Doppstadt Basic 518 The brand new Doppstadt BASIC 518 Trommel Screen, appearing for the first time in the UK at the show offers a robust, powerful base for a wide variety of screening jobs. The basic frame structure has a 1-axle chassis ensuring the full mobility and manoeuvrability of the machine, even under the most adverse surrounding conditions. With the sideways folding door, the screen drum can also be accessed easily and exchanged quickly in almost any situation. The BASIC 518 offers another benefit in the form of two drive variants – diesel- and electro-hydraulic – which contribute to the outstanding cost-effectiveness of the machine.

It’s been an immensely successfully show, even with the unfortunate cancellation of the last day. Not only did it provide us with a great opportunity to showcase our agricultural machinery but also allowed us to catch up with a number of our existing customers. Aidan McGeary, Managing Director of Blue Central

Quality Freight UK invests £700,000 in new Fuchs MHL390 crane Quality Freight UK has significantly increased its cranage capability at its Ellesmere Port main operation. The company has invested over £700,000 in acquiring a Fuchs MHL390 crane. The latest addition will complement QF UK’s other cranes which include a MHL360 wheeled crane based at its Ellesmere Port terminal and a RHL340 tracked crane. The new Fuchs MHL390 is capable of handling over 400 metric tons per hour on cargoes.

A spokesman for DB Cargo, which has utilised the RHL340 to discharge trains in St Helens, said: “The adaptability provided by using the QF mobile crane service has allowed us to deliver business we would otherwise not have been able to service.” The new mobile crane service forms part of the total logistics service provided by QF UK. The company has the ability to offer clients support across sea, road, rail and air.

This significant further investment in the business will achieve a number of objectives. It will allow us to increase bulk volumes in the port, allow multi-vessel working and enhance customer service through faster vessel turnaround. We have seen volumes increase by over 20 per cent during the past 12 months and are extremely confident about business prospects moving into 2018. Adding this new Fuchs crane to our fleet was therefore a natural next step, increasing cranage at Ellesmere Port and future-proofing QF UK’s handling capabilities. Sebastian Gardiner, Managing Director of Quality Freight UK

The investment also enables QF UK to maximise the usage of its mobile cranes at client sites. The company’s MHL360 and RHL340 are regularly moved at short notice to locations across the North West of England. This has included loading bulk ships from the INEOS terminal in Runcorn.

Sebastian Gardiner commented “Some companies are tapping into our mobile crane capability as a standalone service, while others are choosing to integrate it as part of a much wider logistics solution.” In addition to its 40-acre multi-modal facility in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, the Quality Freight Group has bases in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Knock, Hull, Chatham and Rotterdam.

The deal was completed by Blue Central Sales Manager James McCluskey who also highlighted, “Bruce is focused on growing his business considerably over the coming years so was looking to work with a company that would ensure the continuous, smooth running of the shredders through a nationwide network of engineers and consistent availability of spare parts. This is something that Blue can offer, making us unique in the marketplace. Currently Pritchard Production Management have a range of Doppstadt DW slow speed shredders, Doppstadt SM trommels and the 2 new Doppstadt AK high speed shredders. Other manufacturer models for hire include a Powerscreen Warrior 1800.

The tracked Doppstadt AK510 weighs in at an impressive 29 tonnes. The flail drum alone weighs 2.5 tonnes, and rotates at rate of ca. 1,000 rpm.

Of course the quality of the Doppstadt is always an advantage when you’re hiring out the plant equipment. Potential customers know the machinery is the best available, plus the fact that Blue Group have depots and engineers throughout the country means that should we need any support, wherever the machine is, they are fairly close by. When you are in the hire business, this is critical in keeping your customers happy. International Belfast Harbour

take on four BlueMAC railed hoppers BlueMAC, part of the Blue Group have recently designed and delivered the first four of a series of hoppers for Belfast Harbour. The 146m3 containers, which are capable of handling a wide range of materials such as animal feed and fertilisers, are assisting with the unloading of ships, which come in to the port from all over the world. The hoppers, which are rail mounted enabling them to move up and down the quay, have been installed at two different locations within the port. Each hopper is being fed by a crane. Once the hopper has been loaded, lorries drive under the hopper and stop beneath for loading. The hopper operator controls the flow of material into the lorry and informs the driver when to move forward using a traffic light system, thereby achieving an even load within the trailer. The hopper design incorporates a number of innovative safety features such as visual and audible warnings of overfill and the potential for remote controlled operation.
