Central Demolition The Customer Blue Scotland customer, Central Demolition, undertake the full range of processes to form a closed loop scenario, from demolition and dismantling to managing that waste stream and onto the creation of saleable material to be put back into the construction industry. All this takes place at their constantly expanding facility based in Bonnybridge, near Falkirk. The business was set up by Ross Craig and Colin Peat in 1993 with the businessmen still at the helm today, managing over 190 employees across the company.

The Challenge

The Solution

Central Demolition had a Powerscreen washplant installed in 2011 to process the C&D material that was coming into the site. Initially the material was hand-picked and fed into a crusher before it was screened to <40mm. This process was not only laborious but also placed employees in the vicinity of moving heavy equipment. There was clearly health and safety concerns as well as proving very challenging, as the team were exposed to the elements. Furthermore there was also the remaining material, which was going to landfill and falling within the higher landfill tax bracket.

Blue Scotland called upon sister company, BlueMAC Manufacturing to help them design a plant which could address all of these challenges. The MRF would automate much of the manual element within the process, maximising recovery rates and minimising volumes to landfill. It would also place the employees in safe working environments and help ensure high levels of productivity.

The Process Initially the material is fed onto a 8m BlueMAC incline conveyor which feeds a screenbox to separate the material into three sizes -10mm pit sand/as dug is used for bedding pipes and for general building works 10mm-75mm goes directly to a 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher +75mm moves forward to a 4 bay picking station where wood and metal are removed. The metal is

sold on to metal reprocessers, while the wood is used for biomass and fibreboard production The remaining material from the picking station then moves forward to an overband magnet and blower which removes any remaining ferrous and light material before it joins the 10mm75mm extracted from the screenbox in the 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher. The <40mm created by the crusher is fed into the washplant, initially moving through a scrub with a paddle system

Staff safety on our site is paramount and this new plant not only ensures that, but places the operatives in a good working environment designed and created by BlueMAC and the Scotland Team. In addition to this, we are able to process larger quantities, meaning we are now creating over 800 tonnes of high quality recycled aggregate every day.

The material gets cleaner as it moves up the system with the dirty water going through a Finesmaster to extract the sand. The sand is used for used for landscaping and building projects. The remaining clean material is separated via a Powerscreen Chieftain into 3 sizes, 5mm-10mm, 10mm-20mm and 20mm-40mm. Each of these sizes are utilised within major housebuilding and construction sites.

Ron Hull Waste Recycling is one of the largest waste recycling, scrap metal processers and demolition contractors in South Yorkshire, with their various sites covering a total of 33 acres. This year the company celebrated its 40th anniversary, having been set up in 1976 by Ron. 40 years on and Ron is still working in the business on a daily basis, but is now supported by his three sons, Mark, David and Nigel.


With an operating weight of up to 37.8 tonnes, a reach of 16 meters and an undercarriage width of 3 meters, the MHL350 is a particularly stable machine.

This year the company were looking to expand their fleet of material handlers, with the Terex Fuchs MHL350 being one of the machines the company were considering. The ferrous processing part of the business, in which the machine was to work, had already experienced Fuchs equipment, having purchased a MHL350 E Series back in November 2014 from Blue Fuchs, as well as previous models to that before Blue became the distributor for the brand in 2011. After a number of conversations with various suppliers Mark Hull, who oversees this part of the business, as well as the team of buyers within the company, decided the Fuchs material handler was the superior option and the purchase was made. With an operating weight of up to 37.8 tonnes, a reach of 16 meters and an undercarriage width of 3 meters, the MHL350 is a particularly stable machine. The high-output 160-kW turbo diesel engine and powerful hydraulics operating in a notably efficient dual-circuit system ensure that even heavier loads are handled with precision and speed. The multi-functional display instantly provides an overview of all important operating data and the steering components are ergonomically and clearly arranged. Ireland’s first electric Fuchs materials handler goes to RiverRidge Recycling RiverRidge Recycling has just taken delivery of Ireland’s very first electrically powered Fuchs MHL820 long-reach materials handler from appointed distributors Blue Ireland.

Our first experience with Blue Ireland earlier this year proved they provide a good service and Blue’s commitment to excellent spares availability and a first rate warranty cover were also major factors in making the purchasing decision; additionally, their field service engineer is local to us so the response time is good should the need arise. RiverRidge Recycling is a well-established waste management company based in Northern Ireland, operating from four sites. As part of the company’s continued investment in modern, efficient waste processing machinery and materials handlers and following intensive appraisal of the equipment market, RiverRidge opted for the electric Fuchs MHL820 from Blue Ireland and this versatile materials handler is now hard at work at their state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Coleraine.

Why choose electric? The Fuchs MHL820 has an operating weight of 20 tonnes, a reach capability of up to 10.4 metres and, in this case, is equipped with an Arden S1102B grab. With a total power output of 95kW, there is power to spare even for heavy loads and the four point hydraulically operated outriggers provide total stability for stationary operation. The MHL820 is quick and agile around the working area and the electric cable feeding power to the machine has a generous range. The hydraulically elevating cab provides an excellent raised line of sight for the operator which is particularly important for maximum load and site visibility and enhances safe operation. Controls, including the familiar CAN BUS system, are almost identical to the diesel version, so operators can easily transfer without having to learn to work the machine afresh. The electric drive not only reduces operational costs but the exceptional ease of maintenance also allows good savings on running costs as well. RiverRidge’s MRF at Coleraine is capable of segregating high value products found in the waste streams to a high quality for recycling or reuse. The MRF is also capable of recovering and refining Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) which is exported to Europe for use in waste-toenergy plants. The company’s new Fuchs machine is fully occupied handling MSW and C&I delivered by RiverRidge’s large and varied fleet of skips and specialist waste collection vehicles. It is stockpiling the waste and feeding it into a Doppstadt DW 3060 for pre-shredding before it is fed into the MRF, which is housed in a tailor-made building. Being used under cover, the zero emissions of the electrically powered machine, coupled with its extremely quiet operation and minimal heat output, are highly beneficial features which contribute considerably to the working environment. Additionally, since RiverRidge Recycling has taken the prudent and self-sufficient step to capture the landfill gases on the site to generate its own electricity, the running costs of their new materials handler are fairly insignificant! In fact, RiverRidge estimates that the comparative operational saving on the new Fuchs machine over a conventionally powered materials handler is around £20,000 per annum. In choosing a Fuchs materials handler from Blue Ireland, RiverRidge Recycling is drawing on their past dealings with Blue, having purchased a Fuchs 331 materials handler and a Doppstadt DW 3060 - another of Blue Ireland’s distributorships - for their Portadown site back in February this year.

Blue Sponsored Pro Am a huge success Blue recently entered 11 teams into the Highland Golf Pro Am of which Blue was the headline Sponsor. 76 teams in total took part, which was well above the organisers target of 60 teams following the 55 which took park in 2015. The competition is part of the PGA Tartan Tour and is an event that is clearly growing in both popularity and credibility, and in a relatively short period of time since the inception of this particular Pro Am competition in 2013.

The tournament is a 54-hole strokeplay event and each team consists of one professional and three amateur players. The scoring format is the two best nett Stableford scores per hole from the team of four counting towards the team total. The event took place over three days at the end of September and over three of the most stunning golf course in UK, never mind Scotland. Castle Stewart, the home of the 2016 Scottish Open was one of the courses, as well as Nairn, the venue for the 1999 Walker Cup and Royal Dornoch which was voted the world’s 5th best Championship golf course in 2016 by Golf Digest. The Blue teams started their event at Castle Stewart under sunny skies if somewhat blustery conditions. ‘Blue Southern 1’ finished the day well placed thanks in the main to their Pro, Chris Lloyd who carded an impressive -8 for his round. Day two meant the hour drive North from Inverness to Royal Dornoch, which proved the most challenging venue due to the conditions. But that was more than compensated by the quite staggering scenery of this course, which by some is considered to be the best links course in the UK. The final day for all the Blue teams was at Nairn. The guys from Blue Ireland really excelled on this course with a score of 87 points, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to get them towards the top of the leaderboard. Although they were the highest placed team from Blue after the final days play, finishing joint 17th overall. The event finished with a Gala Dinner incorporating fine entertainment and awards at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness. There was an exceptional turn out with many stories from the previous three days of golf being swapped over a few drinks. An incredible three days was had by all players, with golf of the highest standard being played…in the main. The overall team winners were Moorings Hotel with a points total of 175. The R400 has numerous design and build benefits for both ease of maintenance and operational efficiency, plus tracked mobility on site and a quick set-up time – typically under 30 minutes.

Britaniacrest’s new crusher is processing around 3,500 tonnes a week, predominantly hardcore, concrete and demolition debris that form part of the waste stream which enters the company’s waste transfer stations. The crushing process produces a variety of sized and specified end-products, largely type 1 aggregate and 6f2. One of the attractions of the R400, says Britaniacrest, is its transportability, which allows the company to make use of the crusher on their site of choice, plus a high output and the considerable environmental benefit of comparatively quiet operation. Britaniacrest closely engaged with the then relatively new concepts of recycling at the time of its formation and has grown from strength to strength to become one of the South of England’s leading independent waste management companies. Passionate about recycling and environmental considerations, Britaniacrest Recycling has continually

invested in plant, facilities and skilled personnel and now runs two modern waste transfer stations near Gatwick and Horsham capable of processing and recycling a combined total of around 480,000 tonnes of waste annually and also exporting some 52,000 tonnes of RDF to Germany annually. Additionally, Britaniacrest owns and operates a sand quarry in Storrington, West Sussex producing a range of sand products for the building and construction industry. In addition to their recycling and quarrying interests, Britaniacrest also runs a large hire fleet of skips, RoRo, tipper and muck-away vehicles and grab lorries; there is also a comprehensive fleet of road sweeper vehicles and lowloaders for hire, with bulk haulage and waste collection services also forming an important part of the company’s broad-based activities. As part of their environmental involvements, Britaniacrest also provides expertise in quarry and land restoration, reinstating land to a variety of uses including agriculture, wildlife habitat and social amenities. Currently going through the necessary planning application procedure is the company’s innovative scheme to develop a further site to include a state-of-the-art recycling and renewable energy plant at the former Wealden Brickworks near Horsham. The proposed new facility will concentrate on the safe and environmentally sensitive processing and separation of commercial waste to produce a range of recyclables, with any residual material used to produce energy using well-established and proven thermal treatment technology. The new plant will provide a sustainable power generating alternative to primary materials and fossil fuels and annually will export enough electricity to the grid to power over 44,000 homes.

T&N Hill reach new heights with the Fuchs MHL331

T&N Hill Waste Services recently took delivery of a Terex Fuchs MHL331E supplied by Blue Fuchs. The company, which has sites in Essex and London, processes and recycles all ferrous and non-ferrous metals with their services including the collection of scrap metal via skips in a variety of sizes from 20 to 50 yards.

The company was formed back in 2000 by Norman Hill in Canning Town, London. Today the company is run by his son Tony who has continuously developed the business over the last 5 years. Initially this was by purchasing a second yard next to the existing site in Canning Town, before expanding to a third site at Witham in Essex. And it is at this Essex site where the new Fuchs machine is hard at work, operating over 6 hours per day, 6 days per week, and handling around 20 tonnes of material on each of those days.


The MHL331E has an operating weight of around 25 tonnes, with a reach capability of up to 12m, and is powered by a 115kW Deutz 4 cylinder engine. T&N Hill selected the Terex Fuchs cactus grab for the machine which is capable of lifting 0.6m3 of material yet the machine offers outstanding stability with its four point hydraulically operated outriggers. The handler is exceptionally agile considering the power it produces and allows the operators a clear, panoramic view with its hydraulically elevated cab offering a viewing height of 5.3m. This does not just make the job a lot easier, but also improves safety for everyone on the site. And the benefits to the operator don’t end there.

Compared to our old machine, this is considerably more powerful, and the additional reach from the arm and stick is proving extremely beneficial. This is our first Terex Fuchs machine but it is unlikely to be our last. Our operators are impressed with the power and feel safe and stable when working at height. The machine also offers an ergonomically positioned, glare resistant instrument cluster, multifunction display and automatic monitoring as well as a comfortable, air-cushioned seat with integrated headrest and lower lumbar support, which all add to the machines benefits and help maximise its production capabilities. Blue Fuchs’s new Sales Manager Victor Mallett put the deal together for T&N Hill, which will hopefully be the first of many judging from the feedback received from Tony and his team which highlighted Blue’s efficiency and support throughout the purchase process and since.

Penfold are Verrall over it! Over the last 8 months, one of the leading landfill restoration specialists in the West Sussex area, Penfold Verrall Ltd, have purchased 4 Powerscreen screens to separate recycled aggregate from the C&D waste collected by their fleet of vehicles. The business currently runs 20 tippers, a further 6 grabs and a low loader as part of their haulage work, and have over the last 12 months made the strategic decision to focus more on screening the material collected, resulting in the investment of a Chieftain 1400, Warrior 2100 and two Warrior 1400X machines from Blue London. This year Penfold Verrall will move around 700,000 tonnes of muck. In the main this is taken from the building development sites around the South East and transported to their contracted landfill sites. The majority of the material is used for covering the liner which ensures the gasses from the landfill do not escape into the atmosphere. The layers either side of the liner must not contain anything larger than 50mm which ensures there is no damage. The two Warrior 1400X’s and the 2100 take out the <50mm leaving a clean aggregate, which can be either crushed or utilised for haul roads on construction and landfill sites. This is achieved by a 3 way split on the machines via a 75mm top deck and 50mm interwoven bottom deck.

The Chieftain, working in tandem with one of the Warrior 1400X machines in their recycling yard, then further cleans the <50mm which was previously going to landfill at a significant cost per load. And there was considerable volumes of that size, so the cost was high. The Chieftain now however takes it down to 10mm, so volume and cost is halved, plus the aggregate extracted becomes a product for use as 6F2. The first experience the team had of Powerscreen was back in 2005 when they had a Warrior on demo at Ascot racecourse during work to rebuild the main stand. The material being screened was a sandy topsoil and the team were incredibly impressed with its throughput capacity as

both a 28 tonner and a 20 tonner struggled to keep up with its processing power. Ever since then they have always looked to the brand for their screening equipment. Darren Lynch, Managing Director at Penfold Verrall told us, “My objective for the business is to get the best kit for this business, allowing us to develop. As an organisation we are expanding all the time, however we are contracted, so the future is never 100% certain. We need to know that if the economy slows, we can achieve a high resale price for the machines, and Powerscreen is the only brand on the market that will give us that peace of mind. Another aspect of the kit that impressed the team at Penfold Verrall was the ease of maintenance and repair of Powerscreen machines, due to their simplicity, modular design and the commonality of parts across the entire range.

Blue London have certainly impressed Penfold’s, not only with the machines sold but with the support offered by salesman Ronan Herity and Albert Cooper the Service Manager. Mark went on to say, “Albert is a man of his word, never making a promise he can’t keep which helps me plan. Ronan has been extremely supportive, always being there at the other end of the phone when needed”.


Blue Scotland host latest operator training day In order to continually support our customers, Blue Group have been running a number of Operator Training Days at each of our main offices. The latest session, which was held at Blue Scotland’s new facility in Stirling was run by our Group Technical Director, Tony Weir and was attended by the maximum 12 operators, from a number of different customers including Bowman’s Skip Hire, Skene Group, WM Tracey, Allan Ross and Leith’s. To be highly relevant, this particular session focused on the Powerscreen range of screens and was split in to two main sections. Firstly health and safety, ensuring against operator injury when around the machine and secondly relating to the general maintenance of the machine.

The business tried several bits of kit on demo, however none could do the necessary job on the type of waste stream coming into the yard. The main issues being that the kit could not keep up with the loads being delivered by the 11 Weybridge tipper lorries as well as clogging issues. This was until Ronan Herity from Blue London recommended the Doppstadt SM620 with its 5m3 moving floor hopper and 6m long by 2m diameter drum. their requirements, easily coping with the 240 tonnes of waste which had to be managed on a daily basis. Currently the machine is fitted with a 40mm drum extracting this size for further processing while the remainder is crushed for a saleable 6F2 recycled aggregate. Weybridge is a compact site, as many are this close to London, but the SM620 is compact and solidly built so is perfect for this customer who have one machine and rely on it working day in, day out.

Blue Central get new facility planning approval Blue Central have recently received planning permission approval to develop their current site in Wincham, Cheshire . The expansion, which will begin imminently, will incorporate a three storey office block and workshop within the New Cheshire Business Park, where Blue Central have now been located for the last 3 years. In line with The Group, Blue Central has seen significant growth over recent years. The office now employs over 30 staff including 12 Service Engineers and Service Support Staff to ensure the company offer the very best after-sales support in the market for their customers. Specifically the offices will include a reception and offices for the Service Team on the ground floor with Management and Sales on the second. There will be a training room on the top floor along with further offices for accounts. In total the block will be able to house 50+ staff with the area totalling over 700m, sq. The new workshop will be an impressive 1000+m2 allowing the

team at Central to work on several of even the largest machines simultaneously under cover. The state-of the-art workshop will also incorporate numerous overhead cranes, refurbishment bays and a warehouse for high demand spare parts. These site improvements follow in close proximity to other Group facility developments. In 2015, Blue Southern and Blue Fuchs completed a £1million renovation to their sites in Portishead near Bristol, and earlier this year Blue Scotland moved to their new 3.5 acre site which includes new offices and a 40,500 sq. ft. warehouse. Furthermore plans are already in place to increase the size of The Group’s dedicated spare parts facility

in Warrington, Cheshire. This will include new offices and warehouses to enable the business to stock even more spare parts to keep Blue’s customers moving.

Blue Central has been growing steadily over recent years and in fact 2016 will be a record year for us in regard to turnover. This new facility is an exciting step for our business and will help us provide the best possible service for our customers.

JD Pope upgrade their Powerscreen J.D. Pope and Sons are a family owned and managed business with over 40 years’ experience in the plant hire and groundworks industry. The company mainly operates throughout Somerset, Devon and Dorset, but also undertakes projects right across the Southern belt of the country. John started the business in 1962 with his two sons Gary and Steve now running things on a day to day basis. Recently their sons have also been introduced into the company, hopefully securing trade under the Pope name for another 40 years at least. John bought his first machine from Blue Salesman Martyn Yarde almost 30 years ago, a wheeled Pegson 800x550. Since then he has never deviated away from the brand and up until recently was running a Powerscreen Metrotrak to crush demolition material on customer sites, as well as producing recycled aggregates within their own registered transfer station. His most recent purchase however has been the slightly larger Premiertrak 300.

Although very happy with the performance of the Metrotrak, Gary Pope, Managing Director, highlighted the reasons why they chose the Premiertrak 300 this time around, “We were winning some larger jobs, so the increased processing power of the PT 300 as well as its ability to take a larger material size is likely to better suit our business going forward. Furthermore there isn’t a dramatic increase in weight, meaning we can easily transport the machine to customer sites via our low loader” Other key benefits of the machine highlighted by the team at J.D. Pope were the operator friendly controls, the fact that the conveyor folds to ground level for service accessibility, as well as the hydraulic folding feed hopper with hydraulic locking pins that allows for easy, quick set up following delivery to a customer’s site.

Brown joins Blue Blue Fuchs have recently appointed Stephen Brown as Regional Sales Manager covering the central band of England, from Oxfordshire up to South Yorkshire. Stephen has now been part of the Blue team for three months and has already secured a number of sales including a Fuchs MHL350 to Ron Hull Recycling in Rotherham (see pages 4-5).

When I had my interview with Terry Hughes the main point that really struck a chord was that he mentioned that Blue Group was a ‘family’ and you had 100% support. He was totally right and I have received total support from a smashing group of colleagues.

Initially Stephen is looking to get around all existing and potential new customers to introduce himself with the objective of putting Terex Fuchs equipment in the minds of the customer, then building upon those introductions to develop meaningful relationships. Prior to joining Blue Fuchs Stephen has always been involved in the construction industry, being previously employed as Plant Manager for Laing O’Rourke and for the past 11 years for ThyssenKrupp and Kone PLC, the lift and escalator specialist, where he was the top performing sales person for each of his last 7 years with the business.

Central Create

Christmas Cheer Blue Central have made a substantial donation of toys and gifts to a local charity, in preference to purchasing gifts and Christmas cards for customers this festive period. In addition, two elves from the Blue Central team have volunteered to help organise all the gifts received by the charity, ensuring they get to deserving children across the East Cheshire area. The CVS Christmas Toy Appeal distributes all gifts received to registered charities in the local area that work closely with families and children whose day to day lives are often quite tough for a variety of reasons. The toys purchased help spread some Christmas cheer within these families, ensuring that the magic of Christmas touches us all. The gifts purchased, which include Scalextrix tracks, dolls, Lego sets and teddy bears to suit a variety of ages were collected by Hannah Musa and Andrew Luisis from CVS Christmas Toy appeal and will now be on the way to homes across the Cheshire County.

Lynn makes the jump!

After 31 years of loyal service Lynn Bird, Finance Director at Blue Central is leaving to start a new challenge associated with her lifelong passion for horses. Lynn joined Powerscreen GB in 1985 which was run by Blue Group’s current Chairman, Pat McGeary. Back then however it was still a subsidiary of Powerscreen International and it wasn’t until 1992 when Pat bought out Powerscreen to create Powerscreen UK Ltd. Initially Lynn joined the business to support the then financial controller, Peter Halliwell. When Peter left however Lynn convinced Pat to give her a chance to look after the financial side of the business.

I told Pat that I didn’t want him to bring anyone else in and asked for an opportunity to show I could do the necessary financial work. He considered it for a moment and said I had 6 weeks to prove myself.

As the last 30 years shows, Lynn clearly proved herself and more. And Pat has certainly mellowed in his more mature years as he gives people at least 7 weeks these days. Lynn’s new business, Moore Equestrian, analyses horse behavioural problems, then using the science of equine behaviour in which Lynn has a number of qualifications following years of study, implementing techniques which can improve the life of both the horse and its owner. Commenting on Lynn’s contribution to the business Pat McGeary said, “Lynn has been an integral part of this business for a great number of years.
