A word from our Chairman 2016 proved to be another successful year for Blue. In fact it was another record year for the Group with strong sales right across the business. BlueMAC sales grew strongly for example, with partners established in Australia and the UAE as well as numerous installations across the UK and Ireland. In addition, strong product development by our key suppliers and the adoption of new brands such as EvoQuip have allowed us to both better penetrate our existing markets and gain access to new ones. Blue Spares is another area which continues to thrive under the stewardship of Managing Director Sean Warburton and Sales Director Andy Southern. The expansion of the sales team at both the Warrington and Scotland sites, as well as greater parts availability has enabled this area of the business to register strong sales growth for the tenth year in a row.

The 2 Fuchs material handlers are currently unloading two 500 tonne barges. The plan is to increase this to 2,000 tonne barges each day. The challenge will be getting enough lorries to take the material away. The Terex Fuchs machines provide a full load to these trucks in a matter of minutes.

Rail Freight Services Take 2 Fuchs Material Handlers Blue Machinery Fuchs have recently sold two MHL360 F material handlers to Rail Freight Services (RFS) Ltd, with the machines purchased to load and unload barges of aggregates and soil at a number of locations along the River Thames in London. These powerhouses, with a reach of up to 18m whilst comfortably handing a 2250 litre clamshell grab, are currently unloading barges carrying 500 tonnes of soil material, which is used to restore a landfill site in Rainham, Essex. Rail Freight Services (RFS) Ltd are one of the UK’s leading companies for the loading and unloading of bulk rail freight, and water borne vessels, whilst also operating intermodal and aggregate terminals. The company places huge emphasis on having the right equipment to fulfil their various contracts right across the UK. It was due to this focus that General Manager, Jim Flatman recently decided on these Terex Fuchs machines, which is the latest purchase from Blue Machinery following the acquisition of a number of Terex Fuchs material handlers over recent years.

The benefit of these machines is the lift capability even on long reach. Of course we have the tide to contend with in this particular scenario, and these machines can lift the full clamshell grab weighing almost 6 tonnes from the barges beneath, even when the tide is low and the full 18m reach is required.

The team at Blue Fuchs responsible for service and maintenance, Scott and Paul, are always there to assist with any service or technical queries. They are always at the other end of the phone, no matter what time of day it is, which is vitally important to our operations, many of which operate 24/7. Paul Hogan, HME Fleet Manager at RFS

The all-important cab is not only height adjustable to 6.1m but can also move forward an impressive 2.2m offering the operator the ultimate view, particularly with the 360’s panoramic windows. Of course the cab is also air conditioned, but what makes this machine unique is that the climate control condenser is separated from the main cooling system and offers dust protection. This means the cooling system is independent of engine speed and therefore highly efficient. At the heart of this beautifully engineered machine is a highly economical 190 kW diesel engine with reduced exhausted emissions compared with previous models and its competitors. The MHL360 F also has three new work modes – Eco Plus, Eco and Power.

Jim Flatman, General Manager

The MHL360 F offers speed, fuel efficiency and precision. The dual circuit hydraulics allow for quick working cycles, even under heavy loads, and movement is perfectly jolt-free with the clever kinematics concept, meaning gentle yet accurate manoeuvres can be performed and executed. A rear view camera with night vision option and travel alarm come as standard, however RFS have chosen an all round vision option to meet the strict H&S compliance which many of their contracts demand. The operators also enjoy the comfort of the ergonomic operators seat with flexible setting options as well as head and lower lumbar support to provide an extremely comfortable working environment. The 7” graphical touch display also makes life easy for the operator, providing clear illustrations. Simple menu navigation is provided directly through the display which also delivers important operating conditions, such as hydraulic oil temperature and coolant temperature, all provided from the comfort of the driver’s seat.

The latest edition to The Leiths Group fleet of equipment is a second Terex Washing Systems Aggresand 165. A fully modular Wash Plant, capable of producing over 200 tonnes per hour of quarried sand and gravel feed material.

The Leiths Group officially become Blue Scotland’s largest customer The Leiths Group, a multi-discipline organisation and one of Scotland’s largest, privately owned quarrying and civil engineering businesses have recently taken delivery of their 14th piece of plant from Blue Scotland in the last 3 years. As a long standing customer, this now officially places Leiths as Blue Scotland’s biggest purchaser over that period.

Leiths is a long-established family business with its head office in Aberdeen. The company is primarily engaged in quarrying operations, however is supported by an extensive construction and surfacing division, precast factories and 5 other subsidiary companies namely Joss (Aberdeen) Ltd, A Ross & Sons Ltd, Lawrie Demolition, Markon and M&M Road Surfacing Ltd. Leiths currently operate ten hard rock quarries and four sand and gravel operations throughout Scotland, offering a wide range of products to a continually expanding customer base. As well as traditional quarry materials, such as sand, gravel, aggregates, concrete and asphalts, Leiths also manufacture more specialised materials such as rail ballast, limestone filler, agricultural lime, animal lime feeds, road surface dressing chips and decorative aggregates. The company runs a substantial fleet of plant and vehicles, including tippers, traditional mixers, volumetric mixers, hook lifts, bulk artics, powder tankers and low-loaders, as well as recycling, materials processing, excavating and materials handling equipment.

The new wash plant has recently been commissioned and will totally transform the capability of the Netherpark Quarry in Aberdeenshire. We know demand for the products from the quarry will grow and the equipment will help us fulfil this increase. Grant Milne, Managing Director

In 2014 the company first purchased a Powescreen Chieftain and Warrior screen as well as three Powerscreen Maxtrak mobile cone crushers to work at their various quarries located throughout Scotland. Since then the company has further invested in a Terex Aggresand 165 Washplant, located at their Midlairgs Quarry Inverness, as well as three further Powerscreen machines and an MDS 515 trommel. The latest edition to their fleet of equipment, clearly demonstrating their strategy of investing in the very best equipment, is a second Terex Washing Systems Aggresand 165. This fully modular Wash Plant is capable of producing a range of different aggregates and sand, meaning it can adapt to customer demand. It is also capable of producing over 200 tonnes per hour of quarried sand and gravel feed material.

Leiths have been a very loyal customer over the years and we greatly appreciate their support. The guys there are very knowledgeable about their industry and know exactly what kind of equipment is best suited for the task in hand. It is therefore testament to the quality of Powerscreen and Terex Washing Systems that they choose their equipment. Al Rees, Blue Scotland Sales Manager

The Process Initially the material is loaded into a 9m3 hopper. This feeds an incline conveyor which transports the material to the first stage of the process, a 4.8m x 1.5m triple deck rinsing screen box. Fitted with individually controlled spray bars on each of the decks, the two bearing screens are equipped with polyurethane modular screen media on all three decks, which effectively wash and separate the material to leave high quality aggregates.

The remaining fine fraction is pumped into a cyclone system which retains any material above 75 microns in size and produces two grades of sand. The residual material then moves on to a lagoon to be filtered, with the resulting clean water being circulated into the system, therefore improving water recycling and reducing waste in the process.

BLUE FUCHS ARE PROUD TO BECOME THE E XCLUSIVE UK SUPPLIERS FOR

Taurus Bluline range of balers and shear balers Blue Fuchs are delighted to announce that a distribution agreement for the UK has been agreed with Italian company, C. E G. Srl who design and manufacture equipment and solutions for the scrap metal industry. A leading supplier of shear balers and pre-shredders C.E G. Srl have a history of innovations and manufacturing firsts spanning back over 50 years. Current product lines include a comprehensive range of shears, balers and pre-shredders which are already sold throughout the world, under the TAURUS brand. C. E G. was established in 1964 and has been heavily involved in the metal recycling industry ever since, focusing on the development and manufacture of equipment for the treatment and recycling of ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal. Today the company has over 700 shears in operation across the globe, and has more recently developed an advanced range of small to medium sized hammer mill shredders. Unlike many manufacturers of scrap processing equipment, C.E.G. build each and every machine, in their entirety, at their 10,000 sq. m facility located in Daverio, near Milan, and helped to revolutionise the industry in the mid 1980’s when they introduced the original dual wing shear balers with over stroke on both wings. The system offered significant advantages, which are still just as relevant today. These include 8

a marked reduction in pre-compression times when compared with alternative technologies, which of courses equates to an increase in output. The independent movement and geometry of the two wings, hinged separately on the compression box, allows each wing to compress the bales with over stroke, as well as reducing processing times by 30%, when compared to other shear balers on the market. This revolutionary baling process was patented and first introduced on the then fledgling

TAURUS range of equipment, establishing the brand as a leader within the sector. The dual wing design also allows for a lower loading height than side-compression systems, and they are equally wide on both sides meaning the baler can be loaded from either direction. The lower height additionally means that the loader driver can visually check that the material is distributed evenly along the box floor and operate the functions of the shear remotely, thus eliminating the requirement for a second operator within

the control cabin. The thickness of the Hardox wear-resistant steel inside the compression box of the Taurus range is between 40mm and 50mm, compared with just 18mm in many competitor machines. This means that Taurus balers are generally 20-30% heavier than similar equipment in the market. Furthermore there is a coat of Hardox on the outside of the wings giving them an element of elasticity if overloaded. Other key features which are unique to the Taurus ´Bluline’ Range of shears and balers include a dual hydraulic cylinder system on the shear head. Not only does this ensure a more even distribution of cutting force, but it also reduces wear and tear on the guides and liners.

Laser positioning improves efficiency as the clamp and shear only return as far as is needed and not all the way up.

Patented over stroke compaction on both wings This creates a denser end product and and reduces wear and tear.

The shear guides within the Taurus equipment are made from tempered steel and lined with a dense, synthetic polymer sheet. This combination of polymer on tempered steel greatly reduces wear and tear on the guides and also means that any small metallic particles and filings that find their way in between the guides and the shear head become embedded in this polymer lining, avoiding any damage to the shear head linings.

Taurus have sold more than 75 units in the UK over the last 30 years, with the vast majority still in daily use. Today the brand continues to innovate the sector, particularly with the use of lasers as opposed to the notoriously unreliable proximity switches.

Blue Group Announces Distribution Agreement with Major Wire This agreement with one of the world’s leading screen media manufacturers, is great news for Blue. We are always looking at ways to better serve our customers and this will be another opportunity to help them increase their productivity and lower their costs. Lee Holman, Technical Manager at Blue Spares

Blue Group are delighted to announce an exclusive distribution agreement with Canadian Company, Major Wire, manufacturers of technologically advanced high vibration wire screen media. Major Wire was established in 1884 by Mr. E. J. Major, with its current head office in Montreal, Canada. From their 93,000 sq. foot flagship facility, the company manufactures cutting edge screens which are sold throughout the world.

carried forward with the larger sized material. In addition to improved productivity and separation, the Flex-Mat® improves open area, helping to eliminate any blinding and pegging, as well as increasing the wear life of the screen.

These innovations include the Flex-Mat®, a high vibration wire screen media which has proven to increase efficiency in more than 35,000 applications across the world. The secret behind this performance are the individual wires, which are able to vibrate independently. These individual wires which are held in place by distinctive green polyurethane strips vibrate between 6,000 and 10,000 cycles per minute, which is up to 13 times more than a standard screenbox. This improves material stratification, the process by which vibration in a bed of material causes the larger particles to rise to the top and smaller particles to fall to the bottom, thus allowing the specified sizes to fall through the wire, as opposed to being

The UK’s First SPALECK Screen Deck producing quality scrap metal goes to Enablelink Ltd Enablelink Ltd, a well-known metal merchants formed in 2007 by Roy Millard, has just taken delivery of the UK’s first quality SPALECK Screen Deck designed specifically to extract dirty fines from scrap metal to leave a clean final material. The screen deck has been built within a BlueMAC Manufacturing frame at Enablelink’s Bilston site, near Birmingham, with the sale, design and construction being via appointed distributers Blue Southern. Enablelink has invested in a complete solution that not only furthers their scrap metal processing capacity but also, more specifically, enhances the cleanliness and quality of the end-material produced by eliminating dirty fines. Previously, these fines were costing Enablelink around £80,000 a month in revenue due to steel manufacturer knock backs. Ordinarily, the steel manufacturer uses 340-350kWh of electricity per tonne to melt steel however to melt dirty fines they’re required to use around 500-600kWh - almost double the amount of electricity required to melt steel. And so, knock backs arose because of the increased electricity cost to the steel manufacturer. With such a heavy revenue impact, several solutions were tried and tested over the course of 3 years however none with substantial results. That is until Enablelink turned to equipment distributor Blue Southern who, with the assistance of its sister company BlueMAC, provided the ideal screening solution. Having reported exceptional results, Enablelink have not looked back since their purchase with the company looking to process over 500 tonnes of material via the plant every day.

The issue of dirty fines within scrap metal is a challenge faced by all manufacturers who make new steel products by recycling waste metal. This innovative concept eliminates that issue, drastically reducing costs for the manufacturers and maintaining the revenue for metal merchants such as Enablelink. Mark McMullan, Blue Machinery Southern Salesman

The new sound proof system, designed and built to provide a high throughput performance due to its maximum open screen surface, is capable of separating material in accordance to size as well as grading categories. Consisting of an 8 degree decline primary vibratory feeder sized 2200mm wide by 3000mm long, material is agitated and moved along the feeder by a forward motion. This tailor-made solution also comprises of a 2400mm x 5000mm main screen with an arrangement of 15mm and 20mm screens that enable the fines element to drop down. Operating with a circular motion and driven by a three-phase AC motor, these screens are easy to clean, near to maintenance-free and offer low operating costs due to the high lifetime of wear parts and low electrical consumption. Commenting on the new installation EnableLink’s Managing Director, Roy Millard, said he was very impressed with the product and Blue’s fantastic support throughout the process. Due to the quality of the end material produced, Roy also predicted that the machine will have paid for itself within 2 years.

In terms of the plant’s current process, the initial waste material is loaded into a hopper and an overband magnet is then used to extract any ferrous material. The remaining material is then fed into a 25-70 trommel, sized 2.5m wide and 7m long, which extracts 2 grades of

fines – 10mm and 25mm. The material then moves onto an incline conveyor, whereby a blower separates light fraction, before it enters the manual picking station. Within the picking station there are 5 double sided bays, all fitted with relief bins, whereby wood, cardboard, mud, non-ferrous material and general waste is separated. The remaining product, hardcore, is then transported to the end of the plant by conveyor. www.blue-group.com

Blue Finance Case study Name: Business requirement: Industry: Product solution:

Growing Beds Recycling Services Ltd Funding for new equipment Construction/Recycling RGF grant

Trading since 2005, Growing Beds Recycling Services Ltd operates a wood recycling and composting yard. The business supplies recycled wood chippings to wood board and cardboard manufacturers and works with local authorities, organisations and private individuals across the UK by providing high quality recycling and processing techniques to help achieve large-scale recycling targets. Due to three consecutive years of warm winters, coupled with cheap imports from Eastern Europe, there was an oversupply of recycled wood and the company wasn’t able to sell its wood chippings on for a profit.

The proposition The company already had a plan to supply wood chippings to a local biomass power station, but they needed financial assistance to put their plan into action. The power station required a long term source of wood chippings and was willing to pay a reasonable price. As the power station required a large volume of wood chippings, Growing Beds would need to invest in new equipment.

It was a difficult trading period for the business and so they sought financial advice from Blue Finance. The Regional Sales Manager and Credit Manager visited Growing Beds site to discuss funding options with the company Director, Mark Evans. They also visited the power station to ensure the planned strategy would be financially viable.

The solution Having listened to Mark’s proposal, they worked together to create a suitable deal. Growing Beds met the criteria to be eligible for a Regional Growth Fund grant and following a successful application, the funding was used to enable the deal to have the required deposit. The deal that Chris and Stewart structured for Growing Beds offered security for Blue Finance by reducing the likelihood of any loss and helped the customer to buy the new assets to fulfil the new contract. Through the RGF grant, Growing Beds have safeguarded 8 jobs and created 4 more. This is a great result for all concerned and a success story that jobs will be created in a rural area.

After difficult trading conditions and a lot of uncertainty, it was a great relief to gain the financial support through RGF and see our proposed plans come to fruition. We couldn’t have done it without the help of the team at Blue Finance and we are delighted to be able to support the local job market. We would like to express our thanks to Blue for helping us to achieve such a positive outcome and making the process simple and straightforward. This can only bode well for future business opportunities. Mark Evans, Director, Growing Beds

And you could have heard a pin drop as Andrew Gillon, Chairman of the Scottish Branch of the Institute of Quarrying launched the coin in to the air, which ultimately landed on heads, declaring Anne Hadnum the winner. Anne, who was on the Tillicoutry Quarries table was delighted to claim the prize of a luxury spa day and lunch for two at the Gleneagles Hotel Resort….as you can see from the pictures, but of course the big winner was Shelter Scotland as over £2,000 was raised for this very worthwhile charity.
