MELANIN & MAGIQ SESSION OVERVIEW SESSION 1: WELCOME TO MELANIN & MAGIQ – The purpose of this session
is to provide an overview of the Melanin & MagiQ curriculum, review key aspects to the group structure, define terms and concepts related to session content, develop group norms and agreements, and practice relationship development.
SESSION 2: WHO AM I TO YOU? – The purpose of this session is to explore the

intersectionality of identity including race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual/romantic orientation through artistic storytelling.
SESSION 3: THAT AIN’T ME – This session explores how people of color (POC)
and queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) are represented in mainstream media by evaluating commercial advertising. Youth will challenge stereotypical ideals of beauty and identify ways to support content and media outlets created for and by POC.
SESSION 4: BREAKING THE CHAINS – This workshop explores the impacts of
systemic oppression as it relates to the marginalization of people of color. The session will also identify how oppressions manifest through systems including school-to-prison pipeline, capitalism, and immigration. Youth will make connections to seek solutions to overcome systemic oppression in their lives.
SESSION 5: SHOW ME THE MONEY – This session will define capitalism,
explore the effects it has on decision-making, and consider solutions to overturn the power of capitalism. Youth will also identify ways to seek self-value beyond financial definitions.
SESSION 6: GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN – This session explores
the ways in which faith and spirituality play a role in the lives of people of color (POC) and queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) through society, family, relationships, and identity. Youth will discuss their experience with faith, spirituality and religion growing up, how those influences impact understanding and expressing identity as well as explore ways for youth to define their own faith and spirituality.
SESSION 7: CHILL, THAT’S MY BOO – This session explores what defines healthy
and unhealthy relationships and how consent plays a major role in healthy relationships. Media often portrays people of color (POC) and queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) in negative, unhealthy relationships. Through discussion and role play, participants will have a better understanding of what makes a healthy relationship.
