For the last 10 years, more foundations and non-profits have begun to recognize the power of following the leadership of those most impacted by social injustice. Formerly incarcerated people and those harmed by the prison industrial complex are in the best position to reimagine the justice system and heal communities. Researchers at the Center for Institutional and Social Change and Columbia Law School found that leaders with convictions innovate at the intersection of communities and systems that do not usually interact, and that they bring a history of commitment and the ability to travel across backgrounds and cultures to catalyze social change
