Foreword
heart of your school curriculum, and if not, then this is the book for you. What I particularly like about this book is how it introduces character as a curriculum itself and how it aims to contribute to well-rounded character development. Andrew considers the importance of self-awareness, behaviour, manners and conduct. This includes a focus on healthy life choices, care for the environment and personal safety. This book does a great job in offering the tools to help children build their own morals through developing empathy and personal considerations in their life choices. The Wellbeing Curriculum raises awareness about equality and the fundamental importance of embedding respect for diversity, gender equality, sexuality, identity and disability. These crucial areas of consideration are welcomed in a world of ever-changing approaches to support the needs of all children, in all schools. There is an underlying emphasis on care, kindness and compassion and how these support the basis for securing reciprocal relationships and tackling subjects relating to internet safety and bullying. I like that there is a focus on friendship issues, as our relationships with others often determine our wellbeing outcomes. This is frequently connected to issues of mental health. What matters is that each child has the opportunity to thrive within their developmental components, then these are most likely to be connected to the thriving development of others. It’s a source of strength that The Wellbeing Curriculum explores the direct link to the wellbeing values of Andrew’s first book The Wellbeing Toolkit and offers a variety of practical strategies that schools might choose to support the emotional development of their pupils through a combination of lesson activities, assembly plans and overall school ethos. I believe that this book would be a great addition to the commitment and successful implementation of any wellbeing journey. The strategies explored and explained in this book will be conducive to the overall wellbeing of children. These practical guidelines will enable children to flourish on their educational and life journey with a level of skill, knowledge and confidence that will help them to navigate the future.
