May 2013

A very warm welcome to the May edition of Bloom. In the midst of deadline stress and organising everything involved with putting Bloom together, all of a sudden we seem to be approaching half way through the year. The weeks flick past on the calender so quick we don’t even have time to read the inspiring motivational quotes on each page. Hopefully that hasn’t left us too bereft of wisdom and inspiration as we go forward with the next issue. The fail safe is that regardless of our levels of wisdom, there are so many people jam packed to the brim full of it in the community that we have the almighty pleasure of passing on their stories and projects via these pages straight through your eyeballs and into your brainboxes. To be honest every month we find it difficult to fit it all in. We try to pack as much as we can into every available space in the magazine so if there’s something you want us to find a space for to share with the all the local people that live amongst us, send it on through and we’ll do that no sweat. And if we do run out of space, we will personally knock on every door in Holywood and tell people to their faces. Maybe. Enjoy!

Congratulations to Sullivan Upper pupils Victoria Duxbury (Yr 13) and Rachael Philpott (Yr 11) on their fantastic performances in the recent Irish National Fencing Championships. After six hours of competition, the girls faced each other in the senior final, with Victoria emerging as the winner (thus retaining her Irish National Champion title) and Rachel as runner-up. Well done!

The Cultra Hill Climb features everything from 1930s cars to motorbikes to classic rally cars, this event covers every era in an exuberant display of style, sound, smell and colour. Held in association with the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club Northern Ireland, this unique celebration of motor sport is a great day out for the whole family. When the vehicles aren’t wailing and howling through the race route to achieve the fastest time of the day, they are in their own paddock area where you’ll be able to get close to the cars and talk to their drivers. Full race commentary will be provided from an Ulster Transport Authority double decker bus parked overlooking the track. The 2013 event will celebrate Fast Ladies with female competitors expected from all over the UK and Ireland in a variety of weird and wonderful cars. The event not only marks the 50th anniversary of Porsche cars but also the centenary of Aston Martin and the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum will also welcome The Ulster Riley Club who will have a range of fine vintage and classic cars in the grounds of Cultra Manor. Whatever your tastes from trial bikes demonstrations in the Glen to taking in the style (with a glass of champagne) at Cultra Manor the event is a great day out for everyone. Keep an eye out for further details of activities and celebrities. 1st Jun 10am - 5pm 4 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Holywood Gallery & Art store, Art & Home has recently added

to their collection of art with beautiful bronze pieces of jewellery by American Artist, Michael Michaud. Michael draws his inspiration from nature and each of his pieces represent the fragility and colours of nature. He writes ‘Nature’s creations are the ultimate Art that fills our hearts with joy, warms our souls with promise and fuels our spirit with desire. My true inspiration is to reflect this beauty in adornment is what is my art is all about.’ Michael creates models from natural elements - a leaf a blossom or twig. After models are made, he manipulates these “copies of nature” into beautiful pieces of jewellery using bronze, sterling silver or gold and natural stones and pearls. Art & Home is first outlet in Ireland to house the collection. Each piece of jewellery has it’s own unique story to tell. The Survivor Tree necklace for example, was moulded from a blossom of the original survivor Tree planted at the World Trade Center complex in the 1970’s. It was discovered in the rubble weeks after the 9/11 attacks with snapped roots and a blackened trunk and nursed back to health. It was 8 feet tall at the time of the attacks and now stands 35 feet tall. Michaud’s collection also includes moulds created from Irish Thorn, Morello Cherry, Lavender and Eucalyptus to name a few. View the jewellery at Art & Home, 145-147 High Street or online at www.artandhomeweb.com.

Success of Council’ Start-Up Programme 20 entrepreneurs took part in the Market Start Up Programme earlier this year, launched to provide support to people in the city who wanted to set up a food or craft business and test trade by selling their products at St George’s Market. Since participating in the programme, some of the businesses have been trading at the Market regularly and selling their products at other venues across the city. The success of the programme has also led to one local entrepreneur opening her own textile shop in east Belfast (Asa pictured far left) to sell her unique range of crafts and fabrics as well as run workshops on sewing, quilting and pattern-making. Two of the programme participants will also be selling their products at stands at the Belfast Spring Continental Market and Belfast Maritime Continental Market at the end of May. For further information on the programme visit the council website at belfastcity.gov.uk/business or visit the council’s Belfast Business page facebook.com/belfastbusinessinfo 8 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Bloom News Local Wood Carver Keen To Share His Skill & Passion for the Craft 20 years ago it was relatively easy to find a local wood carving night class or club. These days you have to search hard and travel. Anyone expressing a desire to be creative with wood may well be put off by the expense of buying a set of carving chisels or the difficulty in finding an inexpensive source of suitable wood. Even if you have a set of good carving chisels, unless they are reasonably sharp you could end up frustrated. Like most hobbies, it pays to start off small, buying the best that you can afford and working your way up as your interest and ability progress. We spoke to Paul Sinclair who runs local carving sessions for his advice: ‘Driftwood can be picked up for free from the beach,’ says Paul. ‘Skips and recycling centres are full of unwanted furniture that can be salvaged and reloved. Our own homes have plain furniture that is too good to go to landfill. With a little imagination these can be turned into desirable pieces of furniture. I started carving 20 years ago by picking up driftwood from the beach. For years I only used a set of flat bevel edged carpenters chisels and when these became blunt I learned how to sharpen and hone them to a workable edge. Any time I walked past a skip I couldn’t resist the temptation to look inside and the owner’s were usually only too glad to get rid of anything I wanted. Because I am ‘Self-Taught’ I have learned the hard way and made all the mistakes. I have progressed to the stage where I am past most of the pitfalls and now thoroughly enjoy being creative with wood. I am passionate about passing this knowledge on to others so that they do not make the same mistakes and to give people an inexpensive opportunity to ‘have a go’ and discover if woodcarving is something they would like to pursue.’ Telephone 07757 107129.

The Pet Care Company are a local business that treats your little treasure like their own. Their two dogs, Bailey and Bracken, and Mable the cat are part of their family lifestyle. ‘The dogs travel with us when we are out and about, and whether it’s the beach or forest, they love meeting new friends and socialising with everyone including the two legged kind! The care we give our pets matches the care we give to others.’ And that level of care extends to a comprehensive array of services. They offer a dog walking service and beforehand they meet with you to get all the special requirements necessary. They also have a puppy service to call in and see pup to make sure they’re kept in their feeding and walking routines. Cats and kittens are catered for too and they can do home visits to make sure puss is happy in his home comforts. Stressed leaving your pet behind during the day? Pet Care Co can offer a home pet sitting service so you can relax when you’re not there. They also offer a home from home service where one or two dogs from the same house can join Pet Care Company at their home and be treated like one of the family! If transport or time is an issue, they can take your pet to appointments, vet or groomers wherever they have to be. The Pet Care Company is a member of The National Association of Registered Pet Sitters. For more info call 028 9065 6229. www.petcarecompanyni.com

W

e gave you the early rundown on what’s happening this May Day in the last edition of Bloom but heres a reminder and some more info. North Down Borough Council in association with Holywood and District Community Council are bringing back the original May Day merriment to Holywood this year with a jam-packed schedule of fun and entertainment. This year, the family fun will take place on Monday 6th May from 10am-4pm. The town, which of course boasts the only Maypole in Ireland, will be filled with over 70 stalls including an Italian Speciality market. Families can celebrate May Day in Holywood with Children’s activities, street entertainment, a diverse menu of music and dance, all adding up to a great day out for the whole in family. The stage programme this year includes a fantastic display from The Cone Dancers – a 21st Century Maypole eight metres high creates a new stage for an extraordinary aerial performance – the illusion is gravity defying and extraordinary! It promises to be a truly modern day adaptation of maypole dancing. Music from The Brass Volcanoes will resound through the town centre – the jazz band consisting of brass, saxophones and drums are inspired by a long tradition of Brass Bands from New Orleans as well as other parts of the world: expect flavours of the Balkans, Latin America, the Caribbean, Kletzmer, all with their own London twist. In addition to this will be performances from The Divine Company – a stunning display of ribbon dances guaranteed to introduce a generous splash of colour and energy in to the day. Holywood & District Community Council have organised traditional favourites; Bonnie Baby Competition (10.30 am, Queen’s Leisure Complex) and Fancy Dress Competition (12.30 pm – the themes this year are Merry May Day, Stars of Holywood & As You Like It) The ever- popular Maypole Dancing will take place at 11am and 1pm. Young children can get their chance to dance around their own Maypole with Jump, Jiggle and Jive from 12 noon - 4.00 pm and if that just gets them going there will be 2 discos in Queen’s Leisure Complex – (p1-p3 1.00 – 2.00 pm) and (p4-P7 2.30 pm-3.30 pm). For the older swingers in Town there will be a Tea Dance - also held at Queen’s Leisure Complex from 1.00 -3.00 pm. Enjoy! For a full rundown and timetable of what the day with involve, you can visit www.northdown.gov.uk where you’ll get all the official times and venues. 12 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Health & Beauty By The Experts... The Beauty Studio 29 Church Road, Tel: 028 9042 2720 The holiday season is nearly upon us! That means getting you and your skin ready for the sun. The Golden Rule for Golden Skin, whether real or fake, is exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. You can use products that are more abrasive like St Tropez Body Polish, exfoliating mitts or if you are stuck olive oil and salt, just don’t use with water as this will dissolve the salt! When exfoliating your face you need to be much more gentle, general rule of thumb is if it has granules in it don’t use it, fruit acids are a very gentle yet highly effective exfoliator, we recommend Guinot’s Gommage Biologique, £27, used twice per week, it will have your skin in prefect condition all summer long.

Other essrouenndtiathls eforpooyol!u to look perfect

A “good” pedicure, where hard skin is removed, cuticles pushed back and beautiful glossy nail polish is immaculately applied. To keep it glossy, apply a coat of Scehe Vite Top Coat to your toes every few days. Sand and flip flops dry the skin on your feet very quickly so apply plenty of moisturiser and pop a foot file in you suitcase...nothing worse than dry cracked heels!

When it comes to your eyes there are lots of choices depending on what look you are going for. The most natural way to enhance your eyes is an eyelash tint. It will add colour to your lashes, no length or volume, but will make your eyes more alive when going without make up and lasts around 4-6 weeks. For a more enhanced look, opt for semi-permanent mascara, lasting around three weeks which it adds volume and length just as a mascara would, a great time saver for busy mum’s. For the most glamorous of looks there are semi-permanent eyelash extensions that are glued to your own eyelashes, they need careful and regular maintenance every two weeks to ensure they look perfect but when looked after properly looked after they are amazing!

To sunbathe or not to sunbathe? There is nothing more damaging to your skin than the sun. The UVA rays (A for ageing) penetrate into the deepest layers damaging collagen and elastin fibres, the very structures that stop our skin wrinkling. We always recommend avoiding the sun completely. Most opt for a spray tan before a holiday, and the trick to is after a couple of days begin to exfoliate to take the old tan off. Then you can begin to apply fresh tan. St. Tropez Everyday allows you to build your colour and it has a beautiful scent so no one will even know you are wearing fake tan. If you just can’t bear the thought of not sunbathing a good compromise is tan your body but avoid your neck and décolleté area and fake it with St. Tropez Everyday Face.

An ey w tint will frame your faebceroan preened even dwikethepnoyomu aklooekiupng.

Rising Star

Leader of the Pack

Andrew Crawford captures the incredible scenery around us, creating a unique collection of images to treasure forever.

‘I’m really no more than a keen amateur with an interest in anything visual combined with a love for my surroundings,’ says Andrew Crawford who captures the scenery around us, creating a unique collection to behold. ‘Anything I’ve learnt is gleaned from admiring the work of others in magazines such as National Geographic and Time Life. I’m also an artist using either brush or pencil to capture what I see. “Balance” links all my visual work. The viewer will hopefully not want to redistribute anything in the composition.’ In 2002 Harland & Wolff completed their final ship. For Andrew this spurred nostalgia and was the beginning of his Yard Card® collection. He had been looking through his transparencies/ slides, coming across several capturing the Belfast Shipyard in all its glory. ‘I decided to produce a collection of these pictures and selected the card format. I favoured a 6in x 4in size (3 : 2 ratio) plus 1 image of 8in x 4in as I decided to package all 21 images in a gift pack that had to be 8in x 4in in size, paving the way for future collections. I also decided that in years to come my idea/concept may have value and trade marked the name Yard Cards®. Following the learning curve of creating his Belfast Shipyard Collection, Andrew wanted to produce further gift pack collections; Belfast Lough Collection and Strangford Lough in gift pack format along with a website to showcase them. ‘I’m hoping to soon produce a 4th collection that’s available in the gift pack format; The Mournes. As a keen hill walker over the years I’ve assembled a collection of pictures that depict my experience of one of the most magical places I know and would like to share with others. Also, I will be adding to “Featured Photograph” at www.yardcards.com on a regular basis. Featured Photograph provides additional interest for visitors to the website with anecdotes and information about specific pictures.’ Visit www.yard-cards.com where you can purchase the 3 Gift Packs and Framed versions of the 139 images. Bespoke framing solutions upon request. Tel: 07801 383292 28 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Local Legend

Firm, Family Foundations It was 1911 when William Stevenson began his painting and decorating firm in Holywood. 100 years later, the story continues. The firm’s founder completed his apprenticeship aboard the ill fated liner the Titanic. He put the finishing touches to the ship’s famous luxurious decor just before it was launched in 1912. After the ship set sail, William Stevenson left the Belfast Shipyard to set up his own business which he later expanded with his sons Hugh and Sammy. The skills he learnt were soon being passed on from father to son as they have been ever since. They gained a reputation for delivering a high quality and reliable service to their many domestic and commercial customers. But of course things were different then. It wasn’t a case of popping to the shop for everything you need, pop it in the back of the van and off you go. Originally The Stevenson’s had to mix all their own paints and colours and travelled with all the tools of their trade in a cart to the house or business they were working on. Such is their longevity in the business they carried on trading through two world wars and it was after the second that they began to take on more unusual jobs. And for these they recruited former Italian prisoners of war. They had mastered their country’s renowned centuries old artistic talent so they were ideal for what the projects they were working on - they were employed to paint the decorative murals in some of North Down’s grandest of homes. 30 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Nik (l) and his father Peter.

The family firm is now run by the fourth generation; William’s Grandson Peter and his great grandson Nik. Peter eventually took over after learning from Dad Hugh and saw it through the difficult times of the troubles and the 80’s recession. Peter’s son Nik then embarked on the early stages of his painting career in school, mastering his craft alongside his grandfather and father. The family continue to work from their Holywood base for many loyal customers some of whom have used them for generations. In the same year the Stevenson’s celebrated their centenary they were rewarded for their 100 years of service with a coveted place in the top 5 firms of their size in the whole of the UK. Grand praise of their traditionally trained yet modern thinking philosophy and dedicated to quality workmanship, producing the highest quality finishes from Holywood and Belfast to all over Northern Ireland. Nik wished to pass on some wishes to the company’s clients; ‘We would like to say a huge thank you all our customers past, present and future for their support of a long established local firm.’ Tel: 028 9059 8852 Mobile: 07980 549535 stevensonandson.co.uk
