EAST BELFAST • EDITION #32 • OCTOBER 2014

WELCOME! People seem to have been talking about Christmas recently. Emails were coming through from mid July about Christmas menus, party venues etc. It’s hard to think about basting a turkey in the middle of July when really you’re meant to be basting yourself in factor four. But time flies by so quickly that the timing is actually about right. A fair warning for the festivities and many local restaurants are now taking bookings so you better get your skates on if you want a table. At the going rate the Bloom Magazine Belfast

Easter eggs will be on the shelves by the end of the month. Inside this months edition we have a varied platter of stories and features to bring you that span a myriad of topics from health, beauty, fitness, art, food, sport and fund-raising. Once again East Belfast is buzzing and we’ve captured it all in one handy magazine. Plenty in there to keep you on your seat for a while. But don’t get too comfortable, you’ve enough on your plate - you’ve to get up in the roof space and get the Christmas tree down! Enjoy. @bloommag

Local slimmers put their best foot  forward for cancer charity! Local slimmers raised over £1500 for a leading cancer charity when they held a Slimming World does Race for Life Event at Victoria Park, in August. The local men and women are all members of the East Belfast and Holywood Slimming World groups and held their own event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the organisation’s charity partner throughout 2014. The race was not competitive, and those taking part could choose the distance they’d like to cover. Michelle Hall, who runs groups in East Belfast says her members loved participating in Slimming World does Race for Life event. She says: “The event was fantastic and had a real feel-good atmosphere. Entrants could run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line – whatever they wanted!” For more information about Slimming World or to find your nearest group log on to www.slimmingworld.com.

EAST Belfast Goes To  Bollywood Amid Rioting Members of the Chinese, Indian, British and Irish communities in Belfast defied rioters to come together to raise more than £3000 for charity, at a Belfast salon’s Bollywood night, just hours after the area was the scene of wide-scale riots. The aim of the event was to raise money for a charity that is organising for the salon’s owner, Paul Meekin, to fly India in November to train disadvantaged young people to become hairdressers. Paul, a multi-award winning stylist with more than 30 years of experience in the business, is one of a team of hairdressers going to India, in an initiative organised by the charity ‘Shaping Futures’. As a brand guardian for Schwarzkopf Professional in Ireland, Paul will join German colleagues to travel to the SOS village in Bawana (north west of Delhi). To help raise money for the charity, salon staff swung behind Paul in organising a themed Bollywood night at the salon. More than £3,000 was raised for the Shaping Futures charity on the night, with clients, neighbours, staff and friends all coming together to support Paul. Another fund-raiser will be held in October. As people left the salon on Wednesday, Paul’s partner, Qiang, an avid baker, gave each guest a homemade cupcake along with an invitation to take part in the ‘Great Partners Bake Off/Afternoon Tea’ to raise more funds for the Shaping Futures Charity. partnersbelfast.co.uk 8 bloommagazine.co.uk

MILK ESTATES TEAMS UP WITH  SIMON COMMUNITY NI Milk Estates on Holywood Road have teamed up with Simon Community NI to give something back. Fred Scott from Milk Estates tells us: “Right from the inception of Milk Estates we felt we had a moral obligation to give something back to those in a less fortunate position than our clients who are lucky enough to have a home to sell. A partnership with Simon Community seemed the obvious choice. We decided that we wanted to offer a substantial donation, so we as a team here at Milk agreed that £50 per house sold would go a long way.” Jo-Anne Watson, Director of Income Generation, Simon Community NI added: “We are delighted Milk is donating to Simon in such a proactive and generous way. Their support couldn’t have come at a better time as we are receiving more and more calls to our helpline every year. This donation will go towards providing much needed support for the thousands of individuals and families we work with every year who are at risk of becoming homeless or who are homeless in Northern Ireland. WINTER WELL NESS

Winter is just around the corner so we caught up with local expert, Jane McLenaghan at Vital Nutrition to get her essential tips to keep you healthy all winter long….

The Immune Boosters There’s plenty of foods that you can include in your diet during the dreary winter months to give your immune system a boost. • The warming spices like ginger, cumin, coriander, nutmeg, cinnamon & cloves • Garlic, a good anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral. Some find that taking a couple of cloves of raw garlic at the onset of a cold or flu will stop it in its tracks • Aduki beans nourish kidneys (can also promote weight loss) • Red, orange, yellow, green, blue/purple fruits and vegetables; each colour represents a different antioxidant nutrient. Eat fruit and veg that are in season – so berries, root vegetables and the brassicas (like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.) are great in winter months • Beetroot or beetroot juice for liver function (especially important during the festive season!) Especially effective if juiced with carrots • Oats, a native grain that keeps energy levels sustained, also rich in silicon for nails, bones, connective tissue • Spelt, richer in protein, fat & fibre than most varieties of wheat • Green tea or white tea or Redbush tea – all great sources of antioxidants • Oily fish – for your omega 3 fats (see above) – also important for liver function and immune health • Nuts and seeds (unsalted and unroasted of course!) – rich in omega 6 fats – the other family of essential fatty acids Tomatoes – especially good if you heat them and serve with olive oil – or choose sunblush or sundried tomatoes - another way to take them is either tinned or as a puree.

Jane McClenaghan is author of The Vital Nutrition Cookbook, available at Easons, Waterstones, Amazon and online at www.vital-nutrition.co.uk 18 bloommagazine.co.uk

WINTER SUNSHINE “Get outside every day. Part of the reason for the winter blues is that we don’t get enough sunlight. Exposing yourself to daylight can trigger your pineal gland to produce more melatonin (made from serotonin), which can help reduce stress, boost immunity, deepen sleep & promote longevity. Some foods actually contain melatonin – these are: oats, sweet corn, rice, tomato and banana. Here in Northern Ireland we don’t get enough sunshine and experts now agree that supplementing vitamin D in the winter months can help support mental wellbeing and immune health”

Routine Blues Back in the Routine

Long nights, al fresco eating and a break from the norm, Summer is finally behind us. But for many it has caused havoc to our lifestyles and habits. Kids off school, holidays, visiting guests; it can be hard to find the time and energy to focus on your health. Getting back to good health habits can be challenging after a period of disruption. Here are a few tips from Urban Fitness to focus on that will help you get yourself back on track:

1

ONE THING AT A TIME: Start with either nutrition or exercise habits, and conquer one mountain at a time. Once you have settled into the routine of regular exercise sessions (or consistent healthier eating), the next step will seem less daunting.

2

SET A GOAL: Having something to focus on will help you stay committed. Whether its fitting into a certain item of clothing, eating more colourful fruits and vegetables or signing up for a charity walk/run, having a clear and measurable goal will drive you to succeed.

3

MAKE IT FUN: Whether its attending a group exercise class with friends, or experimenting in the kitchen, try and inject a little laughter into the task at hand. Group exercise is highly recommended for helping to ease not just physical but mental stress, and there is a WIDE range 22 bloommagazine.co.uk

of classes to choose from (Les Mills, Insanity, Zumba to name a few). Also arranging to meet fellow exercisers will lower the risk of you binning the workout and cosying up on the couch, your friends will never let you forget about it!

4

QUICK AND SIMPLE: Whether its preparing food or preparing for a workout, it doesn’t need to take hours away from your schedule. You don’t need to slave endlessly in the kitchen to prepare plates full of lean, nutritious meals, and you definitely DO NOT need to spend hours in the gym to see and feel the benefits. 20-30 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 3-5 times a week is proven to be more beneficial than spending hours on a treadmill.

DESIGN & DECOR Raymond and Donna Evans have just opened East Belfast’s newest Interior Design store on Bloomfield Avenue.

O

n entering the shop you are immediately transformed into a haven of relaxed space with

the luxurious Emanuel Canovas French candle’s scent floating around you to the soft jazz playing in the background, while you take your time browsing through the various selection of top fabric and wall covering brands like Colefax and Fowler, Sanderson, Designers Guild and Ralph Lauren which are just a few that are on offer. The amazing window display of digitally printed Butterfly Garden from Osborne & Little and the matching drape compliment this extraordinary wallcovering. There is also a small selection of Andrew Martin side tables and amazing cushions from Ab Fab designer Christian La Croix. too. “It’s a one stop solution for all your interior needs from conception to completion,’ say the couple. “Whether it is residential or commercial we can supply you with floor plans, decorate your lounge, fit a new bathroom or kitchen or simply supply and hang a new pair of curtains. We also offer flooring, a small selection of furniture, wood Venetian blinds, curtains, lighting, an amazing selection of window poles and some local artists work.” Their attitude is very much interior design is for everyone. This is a true find in the East, just waiting to be discovered.

CABANA

The Cookbook Cabana: The Cookbook includes at its heart recipes for vibrant, zingy, spicy barbecue dishes. So whether you’ve been inspired by the World Cup or just fancy taking your barbecuing skills to a new global level, this is most certainly the book for you. Yet there’s so much more to Brasilian food than grilled meat. Here’s a taster of what you can expect.

marinade ingredients. Open the banana leaves and brush each one with a little olive oil. Place a sea bass in the middle of each leaf, then spoon over the marinade. Stuff the belly cavities of the fish with the sliced lime, ginger, garlic, chillies and mint leaves. Wrap the banana leaf around each one to form a loose parcel, then secure the ends with the cocktail sticks. Place the parcels on the barbecue and close the lid if you have one. Alternately, cook on a baking tray in the oven. Cook for 20–25 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the fish. Serve in the parcels.

is popular in Brasil, where banana trees grow in abundance. Banana leaves are available in Asian or Latin American grocers, but you can substitute kitchen foil. You could also use other firm white fish such as sea bream, hake or whiting.” 4 small whole sea bass (500–550g each), scaled and gutted 4 large banana leaves 4 limes, sliced 8 thick slices fresh root ginger 32 bloommagazine.co.uk

2 red chillies (preferably malagueta chillies), thinly sliced large handful of mint leaves,

finely grated zest & juice of 1 lime Light the barbecue, preferably one with a lid, and let the flames die down before starting to cook. Alternatively, preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 6. Soak 8 wooden cocktail sticks for at least 20 minutes. Rinse the sea bass and pat it dry with kitchen paper, then score the flesh on both sides. In a small bowl, combine all the

“When we told our family and friends we were planning to write a cookbook, David’s Brasilian godmother Sandra passed on her own collection of family recipes as a source of inspiration. We thought this recipe was absolutely delicious and we had to share it with you. So thank you, Sandra!” 450g raw king prawns 20g butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 celery stick, finely chopped 1 carrot, finely chopped 50g white or chestnut mushrooms, chopped ¼–½ tsp cayenne pepper 75ml dry white wine

FOR MORE BLOOM RECIPES YOU CAN VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.BLOOMMAGAZINE.CO.UK 200ml double cream 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley sea salt Remove the shells from the prawns, put the shells in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, then strain and reserve the liquid, discarding the shells. Devein the prawns and reserve 12 for the garnish. Chop the rest into small pieces. Cover with clingfilm, chill. Melt the butter in a large, heavybased saucepan over a medium heat, add the vegetables and cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened. Season with salt and cayenne pepper. Add the wine and let it boil until reduced by half. Pour in the prawn stock and bring to a simmer. Cook gently for 10–15 mins, add the double cream and bring back to a simmer. Finally, add the chopped prawns and cook for 2–3 minutes, until just cooked through. Remove from the heat. Heat the oil in a frying pan until hot and add the reserved whole prawns. Season with salt and cayenne pepper and fry for 2–3 minutes, tossing once or twice, until they turn pink and opaque and are just cooked through. Ladle the prawn soup into warmed bowls and garnish with the fried whole prawns, a sprinkling of chopped parsley and cayenne pepper.

Pé de Moleque • Serves 4 “During the colonial era, Brasilian streets were paved with stones placed over a thin layer of sand, which the street children stamped down. This nut brittle has a similar appearance, hence the name pé de moleque, which means ‘urchin’s foot’.” 300g rapadura (or soft, light muscovado) 150g roasted cashew nuts pinch of sea salt

BRASILIAN BARBEQUE & BEYOND

Line a baking sheet with a silicone liner or lightly grease it with butter. If using rapadura, chop into small pieces. Place the sugar in a large heavy-based saucepan and pour in 125ml water. Stir over a low heat to dissolve the sugar, then increase the heat slightly and simmer for 15–25 minutes, until it reaches the hard ball stage (120–130°C/250–265°F on a sugar thermometer). Monitor it carefully, as the syrup can easily boil over if the heat is too high. Remove from the heat and add the cashew nuts and salt. Stir until the nuts are evenly coated. Pour the mixture on the baking sheet and smooth it out with a spatula or lightly oiled palette knife. Leave to cool and harden completely. To serve, break the hardened brittle into shards with the tip of a knife. If not serving immediately, store in an airtight container between sheets of greaseproof paper.

Continuing our series of consultations with East Belfast’s property agents, we bring you the latest advice and analysis on the local market and how they can assist you in buying, selling or letting. Enjoy this month’s column from Vision Property, it’s on the house.

B

Richard McFerran & Adam Philpott

“EAST BELFAST IS ONE OF THE LEADING AREAS OF GROWTH AND HAS SHOWN CONSISTENT IMPROVEMENT SINCE THE END OF LAST YEAR”

oth local and national media have reported heavily on the increased activity and rise of sale prices in the NI housing market since the start of 2014. East Belfast is one of the leading areas of growth and has shown consistent improvement since the end of last year, but, with a variety of news outlets reporting it, you don’t need us to tell you that. What we can tell you, however, is how Vision Property has shown its own growth this year and what we can do for you if you’re considering entering the housing market either to buy, sell or even as a landlord or a tenant. Vision Property is a family run business and added a new director to the workforce at the end of last year in anticipation of the increased activity that has already been witnessed with more to come. Vision Property

has started the process of rebranding with a refined logo, new brochures and redesigned ‘For Sale’ and ‘To Let’ boards soon to be seen throughout East Belfast and beyond. The office has been redecorated and the layout refined. We offer a streamlined service of a fixed fee and absolutely nothing to pay up-front and no hidden costs. We provide free, no obligation valuations – we don’t inundate you with calls afterwards – if you want to us to work for you it’s never been easier to get in touch during our extended opening hours via phone, email or even Twitter. If your house is on the market with us we offer a simple guarantee – to keep you fully informed at all times. Our terms of service combined with our ‘no sale, no fee’ policy mean it’s never been easier to put your house on the ever improving market.
