Valentine’s Day has certainly moved on from the olden days. Whatever happened to all the cards you used to get plastered in inventive rhymes, sonnets, odes to love and sealed with a greasy swathe of lipstick puckered up and delivered by hand via the postman. Old school. Well, primary school in fact. Certainly cards are still exchanged today but perhaps the inventive creativity is from a bygone era? These days the young ones probably just send their Valentines target a text; “I LUVS U M8”. Either way, at the end of the day it’s all about the love. Feel the love. Spread the love. MAYORAL PRAISE FOR CITY AIRPORT AS IT CELEBRATES 30th ANNIVERSARY On a recent visit to George Best Belfast City Airport, the Lord Mayor of Belfast and the Mayor of North Down praised staff and management for the important economic role the facility plays. In what was one of the busiest years in the airport’s 30 year history, 2013 also saw the airport transport more than 100,000 passengers over the busy Christmas and New Year period alone. Passenger figures for the 12 months to the end of October 2013 were over 2.5 million - up 14.1% on the previous 12 months.

The Style Fair has been set up to give ladies the opportunity to buy and sell previously loved fashion items. The focus is on the sale of clothing from the top end of the High Street, as well as designer labels and exclusive boutique brands.

everley at the Fair says the concept of the event is to give more people the chance to own better quality clothing at prices they can afford. “I get great enjoyment and satisfaction in owning something that little bit special, maybe it is the fabric or the cut of the garment, but just something which makes you feel good. The idea is to offer top contemporary fashion in nearly new condition. On occasions we have had clothes on the rails which have never even been worn, with labels still attached and the shopper gets to take advantage of the greatly reduced prices. Savvy shoppers, conscious of their clothing budget and stylish fashionistas realise that they no longer have to sacrifice quality to obtain something at a reasonable price when they indulge in luxury recycling. Not only does the Style Fair benefit those who are buying, but also those who have wardrobes bulging with clothes they no longer wear for one reason or another. How often do we make mistakes by buying on impulse? We may be storing clothes which no longer fit, but are just too good to simply discard. There is sometimes guilt because of the high costs involved but by selling some of your pieces at one of the fairs, you can recoup some cash and may even add some new purchases by visiting the other stall holders. “We believe everyone wins on the day. For some, buying preloved clothing may be a way of saving money when there is less to go round, for others it may be for environmental reasons and about reducing waste, while for others it may be the desire to find something unique and that little bit different. We understand that some people will always want to shop for the latest designer trends when they hit the shelves and that some will only ever buy new but we don’t mind, because at some point that fabulous fashion may reach our fairs,” says Beverley. “We offer another useful option for sellers...Not everyone has enough clothes to warrant taking a rail at the events, so The Style Fair will also offer the option of selling on your behalf, when you only have one or two items to sell. A date is set aside in the venue where the fair is to be held, allowing you to drop off clothing for the Style Fair assistants to sell.You are also welcome to bring them along on the morning of the fair and our sales staff will take care of things for you. It is all very straightforward. “ The clothing drop off day is February 9th 12pm-3pm. The fair takes place on the 15th from 11.30 If anyone is interested and needs more information they are asked to contact Beverley via the website. Information is also on Facebook. “We want every event to be a fun, good old fashioned shopping experience enjoyed with friends and we provide changing facilities so you can try before you buy with lots of people around to give honest opinions on what you are buying. We have regular sellers who just love the craic. The main venue is the delightful Holywood Old School on Church Road in the town but other events are on the calendar for 2014.”

Warm Caramelised Bacon and Brie Salad Serves 2 3 Slices Smoked Bacon 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar 4 Tbsp Pukara Estate Caramelised Balsamic Vinegar 2 Slices Brie 1 Tsp Maldon Sea Salt / Ground Black Pepper 2 Tbsp Pine Nuts 1 Tbsp Pukara Estate Xtra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Pkt Rocket Salad Leaves 1 Pkt Swiss Chard Salad Leaves 2 Plum tomatoes 1 Red Onion
Put the pine nuts on the metal baking tray and toast under the grill until golden brown. Wash rocket and swiss chard salad leaves also plum tomatoes. Slice the plum tomatoes. Peel and slice red onion. Place the salad ingredients, except the tomatoes, into a bowl and toss in the olive oil. Season with the sea salt and black pepper to taste. Dice the bacon into small cubes and put into the frying pan with a tablespoon of olive oil and cook until bacon has
turned golden brown in colour. Add soft brown sugar then stir in the balsamic vinegar. When the liquid in the pan has reduced slightly and begins to thicken, then it is ready. Divide the prepared salad over the 2 bowls. Arrange the sliced plum tomatoes on top of each salad and then spoon the caramelised bacon mixture over it. Put a slice of brie on top of each of the salads. Use the blow torch to melt the brie and turn it a light brown colour. Sprinkle the pine nuts over the salad.
Philly Steak Sandwich Serves 2 2 Brioche Rolls / Soft Floury Baps 1 Medium Onion 4Oz Mushrooms 8Oz Topside of Northern Irish Beef 1 Tsp Soft Brown Sugar 2 drops of Tabasco sauce 1 Tbsp of Pukara Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 slices of processed mozzarella cheese (not the soft fresh variety) Ground Black Pepper to taste Pinch of Maldon Sea Salt
Peel and slice onion thinly. Slice mushrooms. Add olive oil to frying pan and preheat over a moderate heat. Thinly slice the beef and season with salt and pepper. Put into the preheated pan, cook on one side for approximately 1 minute then turn over. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms together with the brown sugar. Continue cooking until the onion has softened and started to caramelise, approximately 2 minutes. Slice brioche rolls into halves and toast under the grill. When toasted, arrange the cooked beef, onion and mushrooms on the bottom half of the brioche roll, then top with a slice of the mozzarella cheese and put the top half of the roll over this.
LEMON BLUEBERRY CAKE Serves 8 8Oz/227g Unsalted Butter 8Oz/227g Caster Sugar 8Oz / 227g Self Raising Flour 2 Tsp. Baking Powder 4 Large Eggs Zest of 1 Lemon 1 punnet blueberries Preheat oven to gas mark 3, 325ยบF (170ยบC) Grease and line the cake tin. Put all ingredients into bowl of mixer. Beat ingredients for 2 minutes until lighter in colour. Stir the punnet of blueberries through the mix. Put the cake mixture into the baking tin and level the mixture over the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 > 50 minutes. When the cake is cooked, if you insert the skewer into the cake, it should come out clean.
