AN I FOR DESIGN

Local creative Robin McFarland has an extraordinary background which tells the tale as to how he launched Little i Design; a unique and creatively limitless interior design service that can capture the imagination and quite simply take it to the next level.

“B

efore setting up Little

draw from my back-ground in

i Design, says Robin, ‘I TV and film, to bring a sense of worked for nearly fifteen years in drama to my designs.’ One of the the television and film industry as senior model-maker in an animation company, sculpting miniature characters, props and sets, full scale raised sets for puppetry, as well as making the muppet-style puppets themselves. Unfortunately due to the harsh financial climate, I was made redundant and after the initial period of blind panic, I decided to try my luck as a freelance production designer. I have been continuing to do so for nearly five years now. However, I have always had a passion for interior design so decided that I would establish Little i.’ Since Robin was a child, he can recall looking around houses and making mental notes of things he thought were of interest. ‘I love the fact that one can add real character to a room by choosing an appropriate colour palette, wallpaper or furniture. I

principles that Little i Design is based on is that interior design should not be exclusively for the ultra-rich. Robin wants the average family to be able to afford his help. ‘There is no good reason why interior design should not be available to anyone who feels they would benefit from the skills offered by a designer. As such, my daily rate is akin to that of a handy-man.’ Robin sees his job as a quest to find out what, if anything, the client specifically requires from their space. ‘I meet with the clients and find out as much as possible about their requirements. Then, I would start researching on-line for inspiration. Create a mood-board: this allows both myself and the client to see my intentions design-wise. I also tend to prepare a few rough sketches. I may also visit various shops to

Twitter @LittleiDesign • e: robin@littleidesign.com • w: littleidesign.com 34 bloommagazine.co.uk

get samples of wall-papers, as well as pictures. Then, I would meet with the clients a second time and show them my design ideas. Then, if I get their blessing, start work or further discuss their requirements and repeat the process with more clearly defined parameters.’ As well as the design part, Robin also undertakes the manual labour, painting, papering, laying wood and laminate flooring etc. He has certainly taken on some dramatic and theatrical projects which he has been seemingly born to do. ‘I loved doing the Tim Burton inspired bedroom. It was an interesting challenge to transform quite a small, awkwardly shaped room into a pleasing space. Some hard graft and thought from my side, and I have given the client something really special that they enjoy long after I’m off the scene.’

ASK THE OPTICIAN

HAY FEVER LOCAL Expert AND Advice YOUR EYES

Local optometrist Eric Mercer answers your questions and gives advice on common eye problems. This month, Eric discusses the pertinent topic of hay fever and how to relieve its troublesome eye symptoms.

“M

ost of us have been enjoying the recent sunny weather. However, if you are a hay fever sufferer, the resulting high pollen counts may cause untold misery with runny noses, sore throats and frequent sneezing or coughing. If your eyes are affected it makes them itchy, watery and red – a condition called seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Unfortunately, recent studies show that hay fever is on the increase. While currently around 20% of the population have the condition, these rates are projected to double over the next 20 years.

WHAT IS HAY FEVER? Hay fever is caused by an allergic reaction to airborne pollen. It occurs when your immune system mistakes pollen grains for harmful foreign bodies. Hyper-sensitised cells respond by releasing the chemical histamine which causes swelling and inflammation in the membranes lining your eyes, nose, throat and sinuses. 38 bloommagazine.co.uk

TREATMENT & TIPS While there is no cure for hay fever, there are a variety of treatments and techniques to help relieve its troublesome symptoms. You should protect your eyes by minimizing exposure to pollen. Useful strategies include staying indoors at peak times, keeping windows closed and wearing wraparound sunglasses when outside. Eyewashes and artificial tear drops help by flushing out pollen particles from your eyes. Inflammation can be eased by applying cold compresses to your closed eyelids. You should also try to avoid rubbing your eyes as this will aggravate any swelling.

ANTIHISTAMINES When pollen cannot be avoided, you can try over-the-counter medications. Antihistamine tablets are usually very effective at soothing eye irritation, as well as alleviating the other symptoms of hay fever. If your eye symptoms are particularly acute, anti-histamine eye drops

offer fast-acting relief. However, as their effects tend to be short-lived, antihistamine eye drops may need to be instilled several times a day.

OTHER EYE DROPS For longer-lasting relief, a drop known as mast cell stabilisers prevents the release of histamine from mast cells (the cells that make and store histamine). Compared to antihistamines, mast cell stabilisers take longer to work, so it’s best to begin using them 2 weeks prior to hay fever season. For severe cases, combination drops - containing anti-histamines and mast cell stabilisers are available on prescription. If you are suffering from signs and symptoms of hay fever, consult your optometrist, pharmacist or GP for expert advice. Eric Mercer is at 448 Woodstock Road Tel: 028 9058 3030. ericmerceropticians.com.

THE PLEASURES OF THE TABLE Rediscovering Theodora FitzGibbon. Over 150 classic dishes from Ireland’s much loved food writer.

Theodora FitzGibbon’s column in The Irish Times was once essential reading for anyone with an interest in cookery. Infused with wit, a lust for life, and a genuine love of good food, classic recipes like her Christmas Cake and Barm Brack became legendary and were well used in homes in Ireland and abroad for

decades. Now Ireland’s most exciting young food writer, Donal Skehan, discovers the art of Theodora in this beautiful new collection in which he selects her very best dishes and lovingly brings them to life through his glorious photography. Life-long fans will be delighted with this replacement for their battered and

much-used books (or ancient newspaper clippings) and a new generation of food lovers, just like Donal, will discover the delight of Theodora FitzGibbon for the very first time. The Pleasures of the Table is published by Gill & Macmillan priced at £22.99. Available from www.gillmacmillanbooks.ie

If you’ve got a variable rate mortgage, remember that your repayments will go up if interest rates go up. If interest rates fall, not all lenders will drop their rates so ask your lender what they will do if this happens. If you’ve got a mortgage with a low starting rate for a fixed period, make sure you know when the fixed period ends and find out a few months before then what deal your lender will offer you.

necessary. You can use a mortgage calculator to work out how much your mortgage repayments will increase if interest rates go up. You can plan ahead for interest rate rises and a drop in your income by: • Taking out accident, sickness and unemployment insurance • Building interest rate rises into your budget. Using the mortgage calculator, enter interest rates that are 1% or 2% higher than they are now, to see whether you would still be able to afford your mortgage and live life the way you want to. • Building up an emergency fund by putting some money into a savings account every week or month • Regularly reviewing your budget • Finding out what your employer provides if you become ill. If you’re already struggling to pay your mortgage or have got behind with your repayments, there are things you can do to get back on track and stop yourself falling further behind. TREADING

Creating Adventures The Boards

Replay Theatre Company began life way back in 1988. We had a chat with operations Manager Fiona Bell to get an inight into their amazing projects.

S

o what do we do? Well,

there was nothing being made just for them. ‘When the company

simply put – we make plays for children because

first started up,’ says Fiona, ‘most of what we did happened in schools. We didn’t want to leave the magic of theatre to the few

only good things happen when kids get involved in theatre! It opens their minds, fires their imaginations, let’s them see things from a different angle. Even if the only result is that when they are adults they aren’t scared of ‘going to the theatre’ that is a good thing. All of the stuff we make costs less than taking them to the cinema. And it stays with them for much longer than the latest blockbuster (Maybe not Frozen. Even Replay can’t compete with that!)’ For lots of children Repaly Theatre Company are their first taste of professional theatre. They are the only company in Northern Ireland who work with all ages of children – from babies as young as 4 weeks old to teenagers who are about to leave school. A few years ago, they also made a commitment to find the funds to allow them to work with PMLD children in special schools, as

58 bloommagazine.co.uk

who could afford to go to the big venues like the Lyric or The Grand Opera House. So we made sure that the play which was performed in the primary school hall was exactly the same as the one that went to theatres – same set, same lighting, same actors. In fact when the new Lyric reopened we were the first children’s company to perform on the main stage.’

But with all the budget pressures facing our schools at

VERY excited to take our baby show, Babble to Broadway!’ But

the moment, they also wanted to get to the children whose schools couldn’t book them. So now, you will always be able to catch their latest show at your local venue all across Northern Ireland. ‘In fact, you might even catch us outside of Northern Ireland. In the coming months, we will have toured across all of Ireland,

for Replay, it is not just about selling tickets to plays. All of the stuff they make gets tested on the actual audience. ‘We like to call them our creative consultants. We are always looking for local schools or families to help us make sure the work is bang on for the age group. So we would love to hear from you – like us on Facebook

the UK, and wait for it…… New York. In March 2015, we are

or follow us on Twitter – we are after all ‘down with the kids’.’

Girl Loves Vintage BLOG: www.girlovesvintage.tumblr.com TWITTER: @GirLovesVintage Summer Time Splurge!

Fabulous weather always seems to surprise us in this part of the world, so it shouldn’t come as a big shock that when the sun comes out, so does a mild bit of wardrobe panic! Into hiding (if only for a short while) go the winter woolies and waterproof wonders and off

Vintage

Tales & s Discoverie

we go on the hunt for short sleeves and cooling cotton. An entirely new summer wardrobe isn’t an option for most of us, and that’s why local charity shops are a great way to update and refresh your look. If you take a peek into charity shops at the moment, you’ll see they are perfectly merchandised for summer. Colourful maxi dresses, short sleeved shirts and shorts, light vest-tops and pretty, floaty skirts adorn the rails, making it super simple for you to find something you love.

LOVE HEARTS In recent weeks I’ve found some beautiful tops on my thrifty travels through East Belfast, which have updated my wardrobe from gloomy to sunny. I’ve worn the heart print top from Oxfam countless times since I bought it! The colours are bright and summery, and it’s just as perfect with jeans and £4 from Oxfam Cregagh Road

sandals as it is with a teal skirt for work.

PRETTY BOWS

A little design detail goes a long way which is why I fell for the stripy top in the Marie Curie shop. It’s a lovely loose fit, great in hot weather, and the bows and buttons on the front add interest to an otherwise plain fabric. £4 from Marie Curie, Cregagh Road

MELLOW MUSTARD I used to be a bit averse to the colour mustard - it was my old school uniform that caused this irrational response! Now though, I love mustard shades, especially with navy. This sweet blouse from Cancer £2.50 from Cancer Focus NI, Ballyhackamore

Focus NI has beautiful pleating detail on the front and shoulders and will look great and feel comfortable on sticky days in the office. And at £2.50 it was a fantastic bargain.

62 bloommagazine.co.uk

It not just summer clothes that are in abundance in your local charity shops, there are plenty of accessories about too, so keep your eye out for bright bags, sandals and sunglasses. Enjoy the sun!
