Welsh pair triumph down under Stunning win over the favourites for Wyatt and Salmon Welsh heroes Daniel Salmon and Marc Wyatt beat Scotland’s Alex Marshall and Paul Foster, the defending champions, 12-10 in an unbelievably tense final to take the Pairs Gold Medal.

The lads went into the final as big underdogs so Salmon was delighted with the victory, saying: "It is the best thing in the world”.

The Scottish team led 5-1 in the fifth end but the Welsh pair fought back - at one point winning seven consecutive ends - and went into the final end leading 11-10.

Marc has lost in the last two semi-finals, so it was a great achievement for him and obviously well overdue.

In the bronze medal match, the Cook Islands pair of Aidan Zittersteijn and Taiki Paniani, beat Malta to earn the nation's first ever Commonwealth Games medal.

In her very first appearance at the Commonwealth games Laura Daniels of Skewen grabbed herself a Silver medal in the women’s singles.

After leading early on, Laura admitted on the BBC that a few ‘loose’ shots had cost her the Gold medal.

Despite that our warmest congratulations go to Laura, it was ‘one hell of a performance’ across the whole tournament!

As usual Montgomeryshire are bringing through some great young players.

Their U16s Winner (pictured left) was Spencer Watkins, who beat Conor Buckley in the final.

Conor Buckley also appeared in the U18 final against Loxton Lewis, this time Conor ran out as champion.

Congratulations to Bryan Jones and Liam Stone from Merthyr Tydfil IBC for winning the WIBA pairs.

They also get an equal amount of congratulations for winning the WIBA Triples along with their counterpart, Nathan Rees.

Craig y Don Dicken Cup The recent Dicken Cup Final at Craig y don BC, Llandudno, was contested by Gari Williams and Darren Williams. Darren ran out the eventual winner , but it was a great tournament throughout.

Commonwealth B2/B3 pairs bronze for Julie and Gilbert

Warmest congratulations to the Welsh pair of Julie and Gilbert in defeating the Scottish team for the B2/B3 Commonwealth Games Bronze medal.

The team took the lead from the 4th end, but were pulled back by a spirited performance from the Scots, who led at the 14th end.

A fantastic last bowl from Gil secured the medal in the last end, after the teams were tied. A truly magnificent performance!

Montgomeryshire CBA President David Richards of Berriew Bowling Club was elected 2018 President at the recent AGM. He is looking forward to a very busy year - and some great President’s matches!

Builth Wells Bowling Club members and some friends from neighbouring clubs recently travelled to Paphos,Cyprus for their third annual tour. Staying at the Athena Beach Hotel, the tourists played six matches during their eleven day stay, four on the above hotel's artificial greens (one game indoors and three outdoors).

Their record during a stay of fine very warm weather, was one of success, winning five matches and drawing the sixth.

Of their two fixtures away from their Athena Beach Hotel base, winning at nearby Peyia Bowling Club in the Coral Beach area, whilst their last match at Aphrodite Bowling Club was drawn, following a morning sightseeing visit to Limassol.

On their days off from bowling members of the tour party visited Nicosia, followed by another enjoyable trip this time to the Troodos Mountains, with the Kykkos Monastery and its unique museum.

by Clive Barrett For their 24th annual tour Llandrindod Wells Bowls Club & Friends returned to Bournemouth after a gap of five years. Arriving on Saturday afternoon at their comfortable hotel , with excellent food, the social side of the tour started excellently because also staying in the hotel were a choir from near Windsor, Berkshire in fancy dress, and a great night was enjoyed by all.

On the Sunday the serious business of friendly bowling began at the inland rural setting of the village club of Fordingbridge. The weather was cloudy, cool but dry, with friendly opponents. Club President Ken Price was captain for the day, it obviously being a tight match because Llandrindod were only leading by three shots with a couple of ends to go, which obviously finished closely, and one fussy visiting third demanding a second shot measure the final score ending 95 shots each!!!! Monday was a day off from bowls, with the holidaymakers able to enjoy the delights of Bournemouth and the sea air.It was back to bowls on Tuesday, following a morning visit to the large nearby Castlepoint Shopping Centre for the shoppers, the Mid Wales bowlers travelled the short distance to Seafields and Southbourne Bowls Club for another enjoyable afternoon. Shirley King was captain for the afternoon, with the tourists winning on four rinks, and the match by 20 shots.

Wednesday and the middle of the week brought a visit to Swanage, and after a morning “swan around”, the tourists went to the local bowling club. Clive Barrett had the distinction of being the day's captain in their only defeat of the week by 25 shots - 128 to 103, the visitors winning three rinks, but losing the other three more heavily. Needless to say the hosts produced a good standard of bowling with the weather keeping dry all day. The visitors were advised they could hold another distinction because it has been proposed that the grass surface will be dug up in favour of an all weather surface. Varying the route back to Bournemouth the tourists went via the Swanage Ferry back to their hotel. On Thursday the official day off from bowls the group visited the world famous National Motor Museum, Palace House and grounds at Beaulieu, for a very enjoyable day experience, on a cloudy day which turned wet later.

Friday saw the good weather on bowling days continue with a lovely sunny day, very good company, and an excellent restaurant incorporated within the club, the near seafront Argyll Bowling Club was visited. The Welsh bowlers won 5 rinks and drew the other for a very convincing win. On these occasions the scores are not usually mentioned, but the Argyll captain surprisingly announced a 155 to 77 win for Llandrindod. At the Friday evening presentation and final supper, the main tour organizer Ken Price, and the social organizer Brian Jones were thanked for their work in arranging the trip, and their respective wives for their support.

During the week with fines for misdemeanours and other donations including a generous gift of £50 from one of the clubs visited, £600 was raised to be shared between Hope House Children's Hospice and The Bracken Trust Cancer Support Centre. This money was presented at the Radnorshire Indoor Bowls Centre before the annual challenge match between the Tourers and the Indoor Stadium team, only four days after the tourists had returned from Bournemouth.

The picture below shows Tour Organizer Ken Price presenting the £300 donation to Ilma Marpole representing Hope House, and Brian Jones, the Social Organizer presenting £300 to Reg Cawthorne of The Bracken Trust, the last named thanked the bowlers on behalf of both charities.

In the actual match last Wednesday evening not surprisingly the outdoor bowlers lost heavily, after playing on the heavier Bournemouth greens. Their only winning rink being that of skip Ken Price, the remaining five rinks being lost, however the event concluded a very successful bowls tour, and the end of another first class outdoor season for the Llandrdrindod club.

Bowl Profiles TIGER The Tiger is a full biased model that was developed because of the increasing need for a bowl that suits a multitude of playing speeds.

Due to the ‘Ergo’ profile, the Tiger is appealing to new and existing bowlers who require improved delivery.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models.

There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline.

The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls.

It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model.

Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw.

The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

Terrain Aeration makes the earth move for you

The latest Terrain Aeration Scamper Terralift has been designed especially for bowling greens and is narrow enough to fit through most accesses. So what does it do and why is it important to you? The Terralift machine has been used to treat bowling greens since 1985, when it first arrived in the UK. When standing water occurs due to heavy rainfall and compaction of the soil beneath the green, it is often not enough just to use normal aeration methods to assist drainage. Terrain Aeration’s approach is different. The Terralift machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil, with the help of a JCB road breaker gun.

Once this depth is reached, a blast of compressed air is released to fracture and fissure the soil. On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is incorporated, this seaweed, over a period of time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, similar to "breathing" underground, which helps to keep the fractures open longer. The probe is removed and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. This grid ensures that each probe shot links with the previous ones. As the Terralift machine uses two metre spacings, it was decided to leave the engine/compressor off the green and use an umbilical air hose to supply the compressed air. This means that there are less wheels on the green and less scuffing marks with stopping and starting.

The probe hole is then backfilled with an aggregate to provide a long term aeration/ventilation shaft, allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures.

The top 1" - 2" should have a cap of your normal top dressing to encourage the grass to grow over the holes. The result is an improved healthier root system, a healthier sward as well as less disease damage to the turf. There is no mess, treatment can in fact be carried out mid season, should the green be too waterlogged to play, but otherwise pre or end of season is the best time.

Despite people's "fears" that the Terralift ‘makes the earth move’ - it does, but just enough to show that the ground has been fractured from one metre depth back up to the surface. The slight "heave" will settle down and you are left with a smooth playing surface. Terrain Aeration say the green should be spiked or hollow tined as normal, prior to the Terralift treatment - this is purely to relieve Before the surface tension to allow the air from the machine to gently blow through the top surface without causing any disruption. Once a bowling green has had this deep aeration treatment, the process would not be required again for many years - 12-15 years perhaps, so it is also cost-effective as well as long term. The club can continue with their own top surface aeration treatment as normal, with their spikes/tines linking to the Terralift machines fractures. www.terrainaeration.co.uk

The ‘Ultra’ Mower for Bowls Clubs The Dennis Razor Ultra development was fine-tuned using feedback from groundsmen and greenkeepers following ‘out in the field tests’ and was the first product which utilised the company’s CAD system back in 2009. The mower has been designed for a high quality cut on bowling greens with its eleven-blade dedicated cutting cylinder offering a 560mm (22in) cut width.

Also available is the superbly balanced, easy to manoeuvre Dennis Razor fine turf mower, which is a similar model to the Razor Ultra 560, but comes without the tungsten tipped groomer. An 11 bladed cutting cylinder ensures an ultra-fine finish. The machine also encompasses the simple 'no tools required' click height adjustors and the low noise.
