Meet the new WAVIB Team Manager

Since successfully stepping in to manage the Team for the October International in Glasgow, the Welsh Association of Visually Impaired Bowlers (WAVIB) has appointed John Wilson as the permanent Team Manager.

With a wealth of experience, from being Team manager previously; setting up the para bowls programme in Wales with Ger wyn Owen and Jon Morgan; 3 commonwealth games under his belt; Welsh Coach of the year in 2016 (for athletes with a disability) as well as coaching numerous athletes to medal success - this was undoubtedly the right man for the post

What an impact he has made already in such a shor t while There have been 3 taster sessions already since he has been in post and new bowlers identified for inclusion into a development squad He organised a Get-together session and is also holding a 2 day Welsh Pairs event

A new club has star ted in Cardiff and although this is still in its early stages he is delighted by the enthusiasm of all involved Potential new clubs are also looking promising for Newpor t and Taff Ely and the organisation look for ward to helping them grow The difference the right appointment makes has been ver y evident

You can contact WAVIB through the website www welshvibowls org uk or call John Wilson on 07970 460257

WAVIB medal success at Glasgow UK Singles

The West of Scotland Bowls Club, Glasgow kindly st epped in t o host the UK Visually Impaired Singles Championship on behalf of England due t o a clash of dat es last year

John Wilson stepped in at ver y shor t notice to manage the team and it couldn’t have been in safer hands WAVIB remain incredibly appreciative of the dedication shown by John as the former Team Manager and we would again thank him for his suppor t

Wales sent a smaller team to this event due to a variety of factors with 8 players and 7 directors This would effectively rule them out of any team trophy Over the three days of competition, there was some high quality bowling, tight matches and the Welsh team needed to rise to the challenge

John Wilson instilled a real sense of togetherness in the Team, leading from the front and even directed two different players The results speak for themselves and it was a ver y successful championship “ Although Wales had less than 50% of the number of competitors, we only missed out on second place overall by a few points to England (We were not even considering the team trophy! ) What a superb effor t This was due to the success of our small team who won 5 out of a possible 8 medals ” Team Manager, John Wilson explained He continued “There were some excellent individual results achieved which produced an array of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals Without question the shot of the Championship had to go to Jonathan Cox who played an inch per fect bowl to secure silver

I am delighted to have been able to step in and manage this team Ever yone behaved impeccably and were a credit to Welsh spor t As a Manager I am ver y proud of ever yone who came to Glasgow both on and off the green “

Dee p aeratio n to cu re bo wling g reen b lue s

It is a common problem Standing water and even severe waterlogging on bowling greens brings miser y, with play being halted and often for long periods of waiting for them to drain Normal aeration is fine for maintaining the per fect sward for bowling but in many cases the problem goes much deeper One club estimated that spanning sixty years, more than fifty thousand people have walked over the club green, not to mention the use of heavy machiner y for mowing and, indeed, aeration Gradual compaction occurs and the deeper it gets, the less likely regular treatment such as Ver tidraining will relieve the area after rainfall At another club, the green had seen ninety years of play and, as is typical of many greens, it was built on shale Over time, the change becomes noticeable, and one Club Treasurer remembers standing under the canopy by the clubhouse during heavy rain and watching the green filling with water It became sodden, unplayable and left fifty or more members without playing facilities until it dried out This all too frequent cancellation of matches causes severe loss of summer revenue It is not as if they have not followed normal procedure, with hollow tining regularly carried out and solid tining done six times a year

These are just some of the instances seen by deep aeration specialists, Terrain Aeration Ser vices, over their thir ty-seven years of treating bowling greens They know the problem lies deep below the sur face and have developed their machiner y to reach a depth of one metre and break up the compaction Their Terralift machine is able to negotiate narrow accesses to greens and work with minimum disruption It hammers a hollow probe to one metre depth and releases a blast of compressed air to fracture and fissure the soil On the tail end of the air blast, dried, milled seaweed is incorporated, and this seaweed, over a period of time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, similar to "breathing" underground, which helps to keep the fractures open longer The probe is removed, and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern This grid ensures that each probe shot links with the previous ones, creating an underground system of drainage with no damage to the green above The probe hole is backfilled with an aggregate to provide a long-term aeration/ventilation shaft, allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures The top 1" - 2" should then have a cap of normal top dressing to encourage the grass to grow over the holes

The result is an improved healthier root system, a healthier sward as well as less disease damage to the tur f There is no mess, they can carr y out treatment mid-season, should the green be too waterlogged to play, but other wise pre or end of season is the best time Once a bowling green has had this deep aeration treatment, the process would not be required again for many years - 12 to15 years perhaps - say Terrain Aeration, so it is also cost-effective as well as long term The club can continue with their own top sur face aeration treatment as normal, with their spikes/tines linking to the Terralift machine's fractures www terrainaeration co uk

Dennis and SISIS kick-star t the bowling season

With the season fast approaching, an over whelming number of greenkeepers made their way t o the recent Dennis and SISIS Bowling Green Maint enance Seminar, in order t o gain advice and tips on best practice

The popular seminars, which are designed to educate greenkeepers on how to maintain and look after bowling greens, have been credited for improving the greens at numerous bowls clubs throughout the countr y Combining insightful seminars and practical tips, a number of industr y experts take to the stage to discuss a wide range of key topics

Held at the Churchdown Village Bowls Club in Gloucester, this most recent seminar attracted a phenomenal number of greenkeepers, despite the poor weather

After an introduction from Dennis and SISIS' Robert Jack, the seminar welcomed the extremely knowledgeable sports turf consultant Alan Lewis, who drew upon his wealth of experience to deliver a presentation entitled 'Spring Maintenance on a Bowling Green '

A refreshment break allowed attendees to soak up and discuss the advice they had just received before Robert returned to give his top tips on turf machiner y and how to correctly maintain them

After a complimentar y lunch, Alan gave advice on the correct grass seed to use on a bowling green and what to look for in soil samples

The ever popular Turf Clinic followed and enabled all of the greenkeepers to ask their own questions to the panel of expert speakers

Further seminars are planned in Wales for week commencing the 17th April www dennisuk com www
