Bowls innovation New WIBA funding

Due to the pandemic decimating the sport and leisure sector, the Welsh Government is providing additional funding for support across the sector to assist in this time of need.

This fund is intended to provide essential support to sports clubs and organisations, independent providers and sporting events who have all faced significant challenges during the crisis and so continue to be severely impacted.

Contained in a release on their website (www.bowlswales.com) and to facilitate the widest possible opportunity to maximise the benefits from this additional funding, BowlsWales decided to allocate the fund in three distinct ways: • £5,000 to fund BowlsWales Projects (which can deliver opportunities for all codes) • £35,000 to fund two specific initiatives: Projects put forward by National Governing Bodies The Bowls Innovation Fund - open to ideas from anyone with innovative ideas to further develop and support Bowls in Wales.

Bowls clubs were able to apply for the Innovation Fund via a link on the website by 14th May 2021, so we hope that as many of you as possible have taken advantage of this unique opportunity.

Assistant Secretary

Earlier in the year, the WIBA announced the appointment of Ashley Reese from Heatherton Indoor Bowls Club as their new Assistant Secretary.

Ashley, or Ash to his friends, is 34 and so brings an element of youthful energy to the indoor Officer and Committee structure.

He started playing indoor bowls back in the 1990’s and returned to the game in 2008 where he has been a member of the Heatherton Championship side.

He has already served on the Club Committee for four seasons and in 2019 was elected to the WIBA Executive Committee.

Ashley’s outdoor Club is Whitland where he has been a member of the Club committee for ten years. He is also on the Pembrokeshire County Committee.

After his election Ashley said that he was looking forward to the challenges the position presents and working alongside WIBA Secretary John Phillips and the other WIBA Officers. He wanted to show that the younger generation can make an impact at National level and he hoped that his involvement may influence others to join him.

WIBA Secretary John Phillips commented that he was delighted to welcome Ashley to the team and was looking forward to working with him in the coming years. The injection of enthusiasm from the younger generation is much needed in our sport and I hope that Ashley will be the first of many to come on board safeguarding the future of indoor bowls.

Open Summer tournament The Kermit Newell Challenge Cup is back with the (18s-30+) party pairs championship to be held on 17/7/21 at the Masonian Bowls Club, Market Drive, Dukes Meadow W4 2RX The club is situated in the Chiswick area of London, so should be nice for a post-lockdown break, as well as the tournament itself.

There is a cash prize for the successful bowlers and stalls, food and fun for all.

After looking like it may have gone forever post the 2019 Tournament, this year now sees the return of the Bournemouth Open - a great week on the sunny English South Coast!

The Tournament will be in its 103rd year and will be running from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th of August.

The event has always been something to look forward to in the world of UK bowls and always offers great competition.

One change for this year is a move to ‘Open Competitions’ rather than the individual male and female competitions of past seasons.

New Bowls Wales Directors Earlier in the year, Bowls Wales appointed four new Directors to their Board, they are: Richard Palmer, Michael Kent, David Harding and Anneli MacDonald.

They joined existing Board Members Ken Burton, Ashley Kindred, Zoe Thacker, Simon Colwill and Chris Emsley, thus making a total of nine.

However at a later Board Meeting David Harding handed in his resignation for personal reasons and left the Board with immediate affect after serving for just two months.

Ken Burton who had been interim Chairman since the departure of Alun Jones and was expected to stand down from that position but remain a Board Member also decided to stand down from the Board.

Bowls Wales issued a statement thanking Ken Burton for the support and assistance given to all the NGB’s during a very difficult period.

Richard Palmer who only joined the Board last December was then appointed as new Chairman.

In all, a total of eight Directors have resigned from the Board of Bowls Wales in less than a year months which should probably be cause for concern for Sport Wales who were behind the formation of Bowls Wales some three years hence. Welsh Association of Visually Impaired Bowlers So just what is VI Bowls?

Although Bowls has been around for centuries it was not until 1959 that people with a vision impairment were introduced to the game of bowling. In those early days the VI bowler would be placed on the mat and instructed to bowl to the sound of the voice, the clapping of hands or the ringing of the bell from behind the jack.

Today the coaching system used is based on the 'clock' system. Using this system the 'Marker' standing beyond the 'Jack' informs those at the mat end at what time and distance from the jack the bowl has come to rest.

You can see from the diagram that the 'Jack' is at the centre of the clock; therefore, a bowl at 6 o'clock would be in front of the jack and a bowl at 12 o'clock behind, with all other positions being relative to the clock. From the information fed back from the marker, the player can build up a mental picture of the 'head.'

The rules for VI bowling are exactly the same. However in order to assist the VI bowler a fine white centre string runs under the mat and is fixed at both ends of the rink. The main object of this string is to help the bowler to judge the angle for the amount of green required.

The WSMBA were one of the few organisations who managed to compete their National Championships in the rather odd year that was 2020!

Looking to find that perfect road to the jack it is ideal for a full range of shots.

Tiger II A narrow bias, slimmer profile bowl with a straighter finish to the head - ideal for all fast surfaces and those awkward end rink ditch hands.

Classic II Classic II is designed to run a narrow running line whilst retaining a hook finish. Classic II is ideal for attacking difficult heads. Recommended for indoor surfaces and fast running outdoor greens.

Tiger Pro Tiger has a running line in between the Tiger and Tiger II with a more pronounced hook finish. An ideal bowl, suitable for indoor and fast outdoor greens.

Bowl Profiles TIGER The Tiger is a full biased model that was developed because of the increasing need for a bowl that suits a multitude of playing speeds.

The Tiger will suit both the competitive player and the more socially minded bowler.

The bowl has proved to be one of the most successful ‘TV tournament’ models since its introduction.

Due to the ‘Ergo’ profile, the Tiger is appealing to new and existing bowlers who require improved delivery.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models.

There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline.

The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls.

It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model.

Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw.

The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

Dennis & SISIS virtual seminar helps greenkeeper choose FT510 After registering for the Dennis and SISIS Virtual Bowling Green Maintenance Seminar, Greenkeeper Mark Piper, decided that the Dennis FT510 was the best choice of cylinder mower to help him maintain the green at Maldon Bowling Club in Essex.

Under normal circumstances Dennis and SISIS would have been traveling the country carrying out their annual bowling green seminars to a wide variety of attendees. This was obviously not possible due to the Coronavirus pandemic and with this is mind they decided to take the content online. GREENS & GREEN MAINTENANCE “I came across the Virtual Bowls Seminar and found it immensely helpful,” he said.

“I’ve been watching the monthly videos from Turf Consultant Alan Lewis and all the videos from Andy Walker (Field Support Manager for Dennis and SISIS) which focus on tasks such as aeration, scarifying, mowing and hand tools. I’ve actually been in contact with Alan Lewis quite a lot who has kindly answered a number of my green maintenance queries.”

Mark identified the Dennis FT510 as the mower he wanted after seeing it in action in a video on the seminar website.

The Dennis FT510 has become the ‘must have’ piece of turf maintenance machinery at bowling clubs around the country and it’s easy to see why. With a 51cm working width, the FT510 provides its user with comfort, flexibility and excellent performance. A true sense of control is obtained through the unique roller clutch drive for a smooth take-up and a variable clip rate helping to create the desired finish.

Available with five-bladed and ten-bladed cutting cylinders the machine can be matched to any situation and the interchangeable cassettes can be changed without the requirement of any tools. The range of 12 different cassettes mean that one machine can be used for several key maintenance tasks including scarifying, verticutting or brushing.

After initially being sceptical about whether Maldon Bowling Club could afford the Dennis FT510, he was delighted when Dennis and SISIS pointed him in the right direction when applying for some funding.

“I hadn’t even thought about whether funding was possible,” said Mark. “However, after speaking to Dennis and SISIS, Roger Moore (Sales and Marketing Manager) said that funding was a very realistic option. He and all the staff at Dennis and SISIS were instrumental in helping us with the funding package and we were delighted when we received the funding from SUEZ Communities Trust.”

It wasn’t long before Mark was the proud new owner of the Dennis FT510, and he is of the opinion that has significantly improved the green at Maldon Bowling Club.

“Robert Jack (Dennis and SISIS Area Sales Manager) brought the FT510 to us at Maldon and he gave us a very good demonstration,” said Mark. “He stayed with us most of the day and went through all the information thoroughly. By the time he left, we were all greatly confident that we could use the machine.

“I mainly chose the FT510 because of its ease of use,” he continued. “What I really like, is that with just one power unit I can do all the different maintenance tasks throughout the year with the cassettes. We bought what we thought were the most essential cassettes – the 10 bladed cutting cylinder, the scarifier, the verticutter and the sorrel roller. I believe that it certainly saves us a lot of money because otherwise we would have had to purchase all the equipment for these tasks separately.

“Ultimately, the FT510 has gone down very well – it is so comfortable to use and in the short amount of time we have had it, it has already made a difference the green.”
