Robert retires from International duty After many years of sterling service Robert Weale recently announced via his Twitter account that he has retired from International competition.

At the end of August his tweet read: “Obviously disappointed with the news earlier today that I haven’t made the squad nominated for selection for the Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast 2018. My heartiest congratulations go to Daniel Salmon, Ross Owen, Stephen Harris, Jonathan Tomlinson and Marc Wyatt. I trust that they’ll get the ratification that they fully deserve from the Commonwealth Games Committee of Wales. Onwards and upwards in the quest for medals lads.

Given the above I guess that now is probably the right time to step down from competition at an elite level. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time competing in the red shirt, playing with and against many of the greats of the game. More importantly many great friendships have been made along the way.

I trust that I’ve set the bar high and given something for everyone to aim at.”

Good luck for the future Robert from all at Welsh Bowler.

by @krakoweric And so the season for Pentrych draws to a close and almost finishes where it began, at St Fagans on the 19th April. This was the fourth meeting of the clubs this season and the fourth time that St Fagans were the winners although today, at around halfway through it looked as if the pattern of results may have changed (for one rink in particular). After the terrible weather this summer it was good to feel the warmth of the sun on our faces and backs and not to have to run for wet gear and umbrellas.

For Ian Broxton it was from victory last Wednesday to a 10-27 reverse today. Ian's rink included Howard Thomas, Russell Howell and Iain Russell. At the 12th end they were 8-9 down and then collapsed only scoring 2 against 15 to lose by the aforementioned score. A similar story on Barrie Thomas's rink who with Bernie Simpson, Denzil Thomas and Don Wibley were 11-11 at the 13th end then going on to score only one more shot against 10 conceded losing 12-21.

Brain Ilbery's rink bucked the trend being 5-1 down after 3 ends but then coming back and staying level to the 16th end at 13-13 and then pulling away with a sprint finish that Justin Gatlin would have been proud of (not drug assisted), and finishing worth 23-14 winners.

Now, dear reader, prepare yourself for a tale of Greek tragi-comedic proportions, a tale of heroism, elation, unfettered joy then, anxiety, bewilderment and finally utter despair. Mark Krawiecki's rink played in a match that could be fittingly labelled with many sporting cliches: "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory","a game of two halves", "robbed", "gutted" even "sick as a parrot". As far as the 13th (unlucky for some) end Mark Krawiecki (up until this time), well backed up by Dave Ashmore, Brian Pearce and Colin Howson could do no wrong building up a very convincing 17-2 lead. 7-0 up after 3 ends they picked off 1's and 2's as Darren Turner the opposition skip with egg yolk yellow woods became increasingly frustrated firing and missing. The ends ticked on and the margin of points grew like the pile of sand at the bottom of an egg timer.

Then the sand stopped flowing for Pentyrch...It was as if the gods above had had enough of the Pentyrch rink having their own heroic way and somewhere up above, in the azure skies above St Fagans they decreed that it would be Darren Turner's day! Suddenly the men of Pentyrch's previously unerring accuracy was wayward and with growing confidence the opposition gained strength. Two 5's at the 15th and 19th ends were crushing hammer blows with Pentyrch only able to try and cut down with defensive attempts for the remaining ends, finally losing 21-18.

Quote of the day came from Colin Howson who philosophically said, "Oh well, it was fun while it lasted." Which is very true. So, moral of the day is that it's not over until the fat lady sings and she sang very loudly for St Fagans.

Harlequins triumphant!

Aberdare Harlequins had probably their most successful National Finals ever, after an astounding performance at Llandrindod Wells recently from Ross Owen (pictured right).

Ross was Skip for the Fours Champions, Captained the club side to victory in the Carruthers Sheild, played in the win in the inter-county team title and was victorious in the Under 25 Singles final.

Wonderful success for Welsh VI bowlers May 31 to June 11 this year saw quite a remarkable achievement for the Welsh VI Bowlers. A multi nations test series was held on the Gold Coast, Australia as part of a qualification event for the Commonwealth Games 2018.

The full Welsh team headed out to participate in this event along with Australia, New Zealand Malaysia, Scotland, England to name but a few.

As part of this event a recently selected and quite newly formed visually impaired and para bowls squad fully supported by Disability Sport Wales headed out to quite unknown territory.

This squad, the majority of them having never played at international level before and certainly not on greens of this type and speed were certainly up for the challenge of qualification.

The squad play in two disciplines:

Mixed Pairs (visually impaired) - Julie Thomas (Director John Wilson) Gilbert Miles (Director Byron John) The trip was undoubtedly a success as medals were obtained. Julie Thomas was delighted with her medal and felt it showed real potential for the future.

“I was thrilled with how I played against New Zealand to win the bronze medal. It is wonderful to be able to show the coaches and Disability Sport Wales that they are right to believe in us, thank you. I was thrilled to show exactly how I can play, it just took me a bit too long to get there. It has been a really valuable learning experience and I now know what to expect and will be better prepared next time. The place is wonderful and I hopefully look forward to returning in the future”

Open Triples (Parabowlers) - Jonathan Hubbard, Raymond Lillycrop and Pauline Wilson After a very long and tiring journey, there was very little time to adjust to these amazingly fast and challenging surfaces before the competition began. The first few games took a little getting used to but the teams soon got into their stride and began to find their form.

“Securing a bronze medal playoff after the round robin was an amazing achievement, we just needed to really focus and deliver what I know we can” said Team Manager John Wilson. He continues “The morning of the medal game was exciting and the team performances were extraordinary. The Mixed Pairs (VI) team went up another gear they really found their form and played as I know they can beating New Zealand 24-7. The Triples also tightened up and held their nerve when it mattered to beat England 13-8. Two Bronze medals on an International debut, I am incredibly proud. This is a step closer to Commonwealth Games Qualification. www.welshvibowls.org.uk

Mid Wales Win Savegar Trophy

At the recent Finals Day, Mid Wales beat Glamorgan in a close fought game to win the Savegar Trophy at Ebbw Vale Welfare.

Caribbean bowls tournament plus a new range of clothing

Reggae Bowlers have created a sports and casual wear clothing brand, which obviously specialises in lawn bowls clothing.

The brand is named after the Jamaica Lawn Bowls team which the founder of the company, Andrew Newell, has set up over the last few years.

He has been trying to work towards getting Jamaica playing lawn bowls officially with the admirable aim of getting to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Along the way he has created his own competitions one being the Caribbean Championship which will be in its 3rd year this year and also a International Championship which has had countries such as Sweden, Holland, UAE and Macau all compete along with the Jamaican team.

Roger takes National Singles title

Roger Jones of Beaufort BC took the recent National Singles title in Llandrindod Wells after missing out on Welsh team selection earlier in the year due to a poor trial, by his high standards.

Roger, 54, who used to play at Panteg Park, says his change of club seems to have re-invigorated his game.

We believe he must be right after narrowly beating Owain Dando from RTB Ebbw Vale 21-19 and then easing over the line 21-18 against local hopeful Sam Roff, who defeated Cardigan’s Kevin James 21-17 in his semi-final.

Bowl Profiles TIGER The Tiger is a full biased model that was developed because of the increasing need for a bowl that suits a multitude of playing speeds.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models.

There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline.

The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls.

It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model.

Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw.

The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

The power of deep aeration

Lack of rainfall over long periods followed by heavy downpours on compacted grass areas on the bowling green, sports pitches, golf courses and amenity areas can leave standing water, rendering them unusable and stopping play. Even with frequent watering on bowling greens, very often it’s found the action of normal aeration, use of machines and foot traffic over time leaves areas compacted and panning occurs, causing poor drainage and depriving grass roots of oxygen and nutrients. Terrain Aeration has been providing a long-term solution to this for over twenty five years and the process actually dates back to the nineteen-seventies.

One-metre deep penetration using the Terrain Aeration Terralift machine not only relieves compaction, it is also the vehicle for injecting dried seaweed. The whole process has a beneficial effect that lasts many years.

It works like this. The Terralift hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil using a JCB road breaker gun (this is because the ground is usually so compact at depth that it needs this hammer to break through). Once the probe has reached one metre depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi), the Terralift being the only machine using such high air pressure, which is needed to fracture and fissure the soil.

On the tail end of the air blast, dried seaweed is injected which sticks to the walls of the fractures and fissures and, over time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil - similar to "breathing" underground. The 1½" probe holes created by the Terralift machine are backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft, helping to keep the whole aeration process working. The top 1" should be topped with the usual top dressing to encourage grass growth over the probe holes. The probe is withdrawn and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern - this means that each shot interconnects with the previous ones.
