FITNESS FAIR Many people set New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. Most try, not knowing where to go or what to do to fulfill those resolutions. To help assist with those goals, Soto Physical Fitness Center will host its 6th Annual Health and Fitness Resolution Fair on Saturday, January 9.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m., learn about the classes, programs and services offered by the fitness

team. Enjoy mini-session classes, and take advantage of community health resources available to educate on health concerns.

Start the year off right with the 2016 Fort Bliss Half Marathon! The race takes place at 7:30am Saturday, January 9 at Soto PFC. The Half-Marathon is open to all including the El Paso community. Early registration ends Wednesday, January 6 and costs $10 for active-duty Soldiers and $35 for all other runners.

BRASS BARTENDING

GILA CLIFF DWELLINGS On Saturday, January 23, escape to the Gila Cliff Dwellings on the edge of the Gila Wilderness, located in what is now the heart of western New Mexico’s Gila National Forest.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived there from the 1280’s through the early 1300’s.

While you’re there, take a dip in one of several hot springs found near the Gila Cliff Dwell-

ings and don’t forget your cameras. The views from the cliff are breathtaking. The Gila Cliff Dwellings are a great and inexpensive place for your Family to explore and make memories.

The trip costs $75 per person and includes transportation, guide service, camping costs and a barbeque dinner in the evening. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information, call (915) 744-1532 or visit the Soldier Activity Center at 20237 Constitution Drive.

This is a new event that will be held every last Saturday of the month in the Community room.

29 EFMP: YOGA WORKSHOP Calling all EFMP registered adults! Are you interested in learning more about yoga and all its mind and body benefits? Then take advantage of this free yoga workshop on Friday, January 29 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Milam PFC. This class will help you learn to relax your mind and strengthen your body at the same time.

This free workshop is for EFMP adults 18 and older.

Exercise modifications will be demonstrated for those who may need them. All equipment is provided; just bring your water and a desire to improve your fitness and lower your stress levels. BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK Not sure what to read next?

Looking for something new and exciting? Mickelsen Community Library would like to “fix you up” on a blind date, with a book, of course!

A variety of books will be wrapped up in ‘oh so secretive’ brown paper with several descriptive words on them giving you clues to what might be inside.

However, you won’t know the identity of your blind date until you get it home. Sure

you might be disappointed, but then again, you may end up loving something you wouldn’t have chosen for yourself.

Fort Bliss Sports and El Paso Golden Gloves present the Border Rumble Boxing Smoker on Friday, February 5 at Stout PFC. Bouts begin at 6pm. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

For anyone who loves climbing, make the trip with Outdoor Recreation to the 23nd Annual Hueco Rock Rodeo, hosted by The American Alpine Club and presented by Petzl.

This year’s Hueco Rock Rodeo takes place February 12-14.

This three-day competition brings climbers of all abilities from around the world together for a weekend full of climbing and camaraderie for a great cause. All proceeds are donated to Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, the Climbers of Hueco Tanks Coalition and local El Paso Youth Outreach Programs. These organizations strive to preserve the park, the privilege to climb at the Historic Site and help the climbing community give back to the local community. PAINT N’ POUR Mickelsen Library after Hours: Paint N’ PourValentine’s Edition event on Friday, February 12, is a social painting class which is perfect for spending time and bonding with the one you love. The class begins at 6:30pm, and costs $50 per couple (must pay as a couple), which includes all art supplies, instruction as well as a glass of champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and chocolates! Additional glasses of champagne will be available for purchase. This month’s theme is Love Birds! Registration is required and can be done at the Mickelsen Community Library, payment is due at time of registration. Registration begins on January 25th. The event is open to DoD ID card holders 21 and over, no children allowed. Class size is limited to the first 10 couples who register. Make sure to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting paint on. Festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m.

Come “Create It at Your Library” as we celebrate Teen Tech Week March 7-12 at Mickelsen Community Library!

Teen Tech Week is when libraries showcase all the great digital resources and services that are available to help teens succeed in school and prepare for college and the 21st century.

24 SOCCER GOLF Soccer golf is a fun new alternative to the traditional golf game. It combines the popular sports of golf and soccer and the best part is anyone can play. Players use a soccer ball and their feet instead of a golf ball and club. The object is to get the ball into the hole with the least number of kicks. This will be a 9-hole game.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Fort Bliss with a 10K run on Saturday, March 12. The run will kick-off at the Centennial’s Sam Adams Pub at 3pm.

Michele Wiernicki, Family and MWR Marketing Meet Angel Rodriguez: our spotlight employee of the quarter. We would like to highlight Angel for his long standing dedication to the Family and MWR organization. Angel has been working for FMWR for nearly 13 years and all of that time has been spent in the Child and Youth Service division. He began his career as the maintenance worker for Logan Child Development Center and moved around the CYS division working for Bliss SAS and at the Youth Plex. He currently operates out of the Replica Youth Center but Angel does much more than maintenance. During his early years with the organization, CYS paid for Angel to get his commercial driving license so he could take over some of the bus driving responsibilities. Being one of only a few employees capable of driving the 44 passenger busses meant that other programs within the organization need Angel’s help, as well. Whenever someone needs his assistance he is always ready to assist. He can often be seen doing the bus pickups at various schools, driving the shuttles for special events like Chalk the Block and Oktoberfest, and also driving the bus that tours the installation for new MWR employees. Recently, Angel experienced a life-threatening accident that required him to be out of work for nearly two months and his absence was felt throughout the organization. We are happy to report that Angel has returned to work with his customary smile and greeting for all who meet him. Angel’s supervisor, Phillip Puett, has had the pleasure of working with Angel for three years. “During that time he has proven to be a model employee. He is always willing to help anyone in any situation and I have never known him to say no to anyone. Angel goes above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. I would not want any other maintenance guy then him. Best Maintenance man in the world...My opinion of course”. In appreciation of his tireless service to our organization, the FMWR Spotlight shines brightly, this quarter, on Angel Rodriguez.

While the thought of filing taxes once again is not always pleasant, Fort Bliss Soldiers, their dependents and Retirees can take comfort in knowing that Fort Bliss will once again be offering free tax preparation services throughout the tax season.

Last year, the Fort Bliss Tax Center saved over $1.5 million in tax preparation fees for Soldiers, Retirees and their Families. This year, it will continue to provide high quality tax preparation services and will strive to keep even more money in the pockets of eligible customers.

The Fort Bliss Tax Center opening day will be announced soon and upon opening they will start scheduling appointments starting on January 21, 2016.

The Tax Center will remain open through the tax filing deadline on April 15, 2016.

The Fort Bliss Tax Center will have only one location this upcoming tax season.

This is different from previous years when there were two locations. The Tax Center will be in Building 404 located off of Sergeant Major Boulevard and Thunder Horse Road, across from 1 AD Headquarters.

The center will be open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm with extended hours on Mondays

and Wednesdays until 6:30 p.m. Walk-ins and appointments will be available during the hours of operation.

It will also be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and training holidays but by appointments only.

The Fort Bliss Tax Center is completely free. Our preparers are trained to the highest level by the IRS and are able to complete both Federal and State tax returns.

Rito G. Vallaz, Financial Readiness Specialist The Holidays are over and now it is time to get back to work. Most of us are making resolutions for weight loss or new workout strategies. Start out 2016 with a financial New Year’s Resolution to reduce debt and build wealth.

If you are a consumer who tacked on thousands of dollars in credit card debt or maybe skipped a couple of payments just to get through Christmas, now is the time to make a change. If you are a consumer who stayed within your budget and paid cash for all your expenses, you too can pledge to save more in 2016.

It is not uncommon to see individuals worry more about physical fitness than their financial fitness. If you overspent during the holidays, the first step to regaining control is developing a budget. Financial Readiness can help you create a budget and a plan for financial success.

Consumers need to truly understand what credit card debt can cost them in the long run. It can be very costly if they fall into the trap of just making the minimum payments each month. For example, it will take someone who has a credit card balance of $5,000 at 18% interest, who is making the minimum payment of $85.00 per month, 12 years to pay off that initial debt. The total interest paid would be $7,218.05. Most people would choose to keep that extra $7,000 and put it into their savings.

Those people who build wealth do not do it overnight and those who create a ton of debt do not do it overnight either. Therefore, it is imperative to determine your specific goals and then create a wealth-building strategy that will help you reach those goals. Key points to remember when establishing your goals: be realistic, establish time frames, devise a plan and be flexible; goals can change. OPEN GATE ACCESS FOR HUNTING

Aubrey Brown, Family and MWR Marketing As many hunters know, the best hunting is in places that cannot be legally accessed. New Mexico has seen this as an excellent opportunity to get private landowners involved in the hunting season. The Open Gate Access Hunting and Fishing Program works with landowners to provide quality hunting, fishing and trapping on private property that would not normally be open to sportsmen and women.

Landowners offer up their land, during hunting seasons, to give hunters and fishermen a chance to utilize areas of their property for a better chance at game. This is a unique privilege as hunters are able to access better hunting grounds.

Before going on a hunting trip in New Mexico, make sure to check out the list of areas with open gate access. The New Mexico Department of Fish and Game publishes a list of properties that can be accessed through the Open Gate Program on their website at wildlife.state.nm.us. Sportsmen can print property maps and look at the best ranches and farms for their sport of choice.

This program is available throughout the year but hunting and fishing on private property is only allowed during the seasons that are specified in the agreement between the Department and landowners. Sportsmen and women should review agreements for the times and dates of the desired land to hunt on. A valid license or stamps to hunt or fish on these properties are required.

The Department provides information booklets that include all the information hunters need to apply for and purchase licenses, permits and stamps. Hunters are encouraged to review season dates, application deadlines and other information before applying for licenses or accessing land.

Aubrey Brown, Family and MWR Staying inside all winter and waiting around for the warm summer months is no way to spend your time. Bundle up, get outside and try something fun and adventurous. Grab your shotgun and hunting dogs and head out to New Mexico for some upland bird hunting.

Upland game includes birds such as pheasants, grouse, dove, pigeon and quail. New Mexico provides vast opportunities for hunters of upland game, especially for hunting quail. It is one of the few states that have four different species of quail statewide.

Prepare

To prepare for the hunt, know what is legal. Knowing how many quail you can bag and have in your possession is important, especially if you do not want any visits from the game wardens. For quail, you may bag 15 per day but the maximum is 30 for the season. That is worth the trip in itself.

You can use shotguns, muzzle-loaders, bows and cross bow to hunt quail. Make sure that you understand the weapon you choose, loading and handling it safely. You must possess a valid license to carry. If you have never hunted before you may want to check out the Hunters Education class offered by the Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club.

Check Regulations

Learn all the details about upcoming seasons, dates, required licenses and permits. Dates and license requirements differ from state to state. Quail season in New Mexico runs from mid-November to mid-February.

The New Mexico Department of Fish and Game offers a handbook with season information and everything you need to know about hunting. You can find the digital copy of the handbook at wildlife.state.nm.us or you can grab a hard copy at the Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club.

Hunting Quail

If it is your first time hunting quail, then you probably need some pointers. It does not come naturally to all. The sport is harder than hunting big game since you are shooting into the air, not to mention, at a much smaller target. Hitting birds on the ground is not much of a sport. Plus, if you bring dogs, shooting the birds out of the air is a good way to ensure dog safety.

What to Wear

Not sure what to wear? Do not wear camouflage for quail hunting. Camo is usually worn when hunting larger game or turkey.

On an upland hunt, it is best to wear chaps and a vest with orange panels to allow other hunters to see you. This keeps everyone around safe.

Two is Company

This saying holds true when hunting quail and other upland game. Hunting with a buddy is safer and allows you to work together as a team and double your chances. No matter how many hunters tag along, it is best to stay about ten yards away from each other in a line. Some hunters walk slower than others so allow them to catch up if they fall behind. Dogs that lag behind are fine, since they are the ones finding your game.

Omit Noise

As most know, birds get easily frightened. If you’re making a lot of noise the birds may take off before the dogs even get close.

Noise includes talking, so try to use hand signals as much as possible.

Trust Your Dog

If the dog sees something, get ready. This is a good sign that he sees or smells a bird. Trust your dog’s instinct and get ready for the birds to scatter. When you see the bird go up, it may be time to shoot. Try to make sure the other hunters are aware that you are going to take the shot. Once you shoot the bird, the dogs will track it down and bring it back to you.

Be Alert

Variables change from hunt to hunt. Hunters, dogs and the weather are all things that cannot be predicted. Be aware of your surroundings and get used to working with different hunters. Upland game involves patience and team work. Keep a positive attitude while encouraging fellow hunters and do not forget to praise your furry friends with a nice treat!

for the New Year

Hi friends, I really hope you all enjoyed the holiday season, I know I did! I got lots of special treats and even a new red ball! But, like most of you, I ate way too much and have a few extra pounds I could definitely lose. That’s why I’ve decided to talk to you guys about how to make exercising fun, not only for you, but for your furry friends too!

First, we are going to start off with the basic walk. Walks are great for both humans and canines, even though they can be a bit boring. Here are some tips to make walks super-duper fun! Power walk and add intervals: you can mix in jogging, running and stepping into your walks to add a little variety. It will increase your heart rate and burn more calories for both you and Fido! You can also go on an enhanced walk, use obstacles in nature or at parks to spice up your stroll. Jump over benches or ditches or walk over logs to work on balance. Whatever you choose, make walking fun. The more fun we both have, the happier and healthier we will be!

Next is my FAVORITE, it’s called hide

and seek! If the weather is bad and we can’t play outside, we can still have fun inside. Hide your pup’s favorite toy or treats around the house and have them sniff it out. It may take some training, but it is great mental stimulation for me and it gets you up and moving too!

Then we have hiking. There are lots of cool trails and areas to hike in or around El Paso. For example, you can hike up the Franklin Mountains and look for geocaches (hidden items in the park), or you can head to Hueco Tanks and study the nature and history of the Southwest. We can even take a little drive and head up to Ruidoso where there are lots of pine trees and little furry creatures. We could even stop and have a picnic! Pups love all different types of sights and smells. Mental stimulation is just as good as working out.

See friends, we can make exercising fun! But really, just as long as we are with our humans we are happy doing anything.

th Doug Briggs, Ph.D., CSCS,*D, RSCC,*D Director of Human Performance-U.S. Army, Family & MWR The Civilian Employee Fitness Program (CEFP) is still going strong 11-years after the start of the first class on 4 August 2004.

The first class had 32 participants, many of whom I still see working out in the PFCs, competing in runs and generally living a healthy lifestyle.

Milestone Class #25 is no different than Class #1 in that we have 32 participants with the same goals as those in Class #1, namely to get in better shape, reduce stress, lose weight, look better, be stronger, get bigger, and live longer. Although the participants have changed, the goals have remained the same.

In the spring of 2004, Mr. Eric Hildreth, Community Recreation Director (CRD), ask me to develop a wellness program to aid the Civilian workforce at Fort Bliss. With the buy-in from then Commanding General Vane (and every General afterwards) and a directive from him to all commanders, directors, and supervisors on 12 July 2004, the program was born. The program allows all Civilian employees of Fort Bliss to participate in the six-month program. The program is: • The longest running, most thorough CEFP in the U.S. Army.

• Open to Civilian Employees of Fort Bliss at NO COST. • Two classes per year, one starting in March and the other in September.

• Participants are given administrative leave.

• Class meets three times per week for six months on M-W-F. • Class time is from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

• Each participant is given a thorough pre- and postassessment.

• Each participant goes through a one-day class of exercise, movie “Supersize Me”, and training on weight training program design and nutrition.

• Class is limited to 32 participants per session.

• Upon graduation, participant receives a coin, certificate, coffee mug, and collapsible chair.

The program has been so successful that it was the model for IMCOM’s Civilian Employee Fitness Program. Wellness programs do work, with cost savings to the employer up to $2,500 per page 32

year per employee. A 2010 study by a Harvard economist found a cost savings of $3 in health care costs and another $3 in reduced expenses from absenteeism for every dollar spent by companies helping employees get and stay healthy.

In a Rand Health study published in 2013 through the Department of Labor, the analysis found that helping employees manage chronic illnesses saved $3.78 in medical cost for every dollar invested. Pepsi found that due to a cut in the number and length of hospital stays it accounted for 87% of their total cost savings even though only 13% of their employees participated.

An effective wellness program also benefits productivity (the average economic impact of health risks on productivity is $1,500$2,000 per year/employee), decreased worker’s compensation claims, decreased employee turnover (studies show a 20-30% decrease), and improved employee morale. Plus, employees are happier, less likely to develop serious disease, and more likely to live longer. (The average potential increase in longevity is 4.5 years per employee.)

Coors Brewing Company experienced a remarkable 18% decrease in employee absenteeism after implementing a corporate wellness program within their workplace and in a program in which only 60% of the employees participated. Coca-Cola was able to save $500 per employee every year.

To say the Fort Bliss Civilian Employee Fitness Program has been a success would be an understatement. The success of the program can be credited to the command, staff and participants that believe a healthy employee is a happy, productive, stress-free employee!

MASTERS SWIM TEAM -Not just for the experienced swimmer

Carlos Garcia, Fort Bliss Aquatics Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics is very pleased to announce that we now have a Masters Swim team on post.

Anyone 18 and older that has an interest in swimming is encouraged to participate in the workouts or join the team. The fee to join, as a U.S. Swimming sanctioned Masters Swimmer, is $35 annually which allows the swimmer to compete in any Masters swim meets.

In addition to the annual fee, the Aquatics Training Center has a monthly or daily pool usage fee. The fee is waived for active duty; however, any Civilians who are not affiliated with Fort Bliss would have to pay the fee to attend the workouts.

As of now, the workout schedule will be held from 5 to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday. This will allow the team the use of the 50 meter lap pool before Soldier PT begins. The addition of an evening workout is a possibility if there is enough interest for two daily workouts.

The aquatics staff encourages swimmers at all levels to join as the structure and intensity of the workouts will range for beginners to advanced competitors, and will include endurance and sprint drills.

Coaches Ruben Gonzalez and Charlie Armendariz will set the daily workouts. They both have an extensive background in aquatics and have competed on club teams and school teams. Ruben is currently coaching for El Paso Aqua Posse.

The Aquatics team is very excited at the opportunity to represent El Paso and Fort Bliss with the only Masters Swim team in the area. El Paso has a very extensive swim community with a lot of talented swimmers and triathletes who find these workouts to be very helpful with cross training.

MWRYOUTH SERVICES Rosalinda Herrera, Family and MWR Marketing Do not let their size fool you, the Fort Bliss youth wrestling team, the Spartans, may not look like they are ready for a World Wide Wrestling match or a trip to the Olympics, but they are ready to bring down any obstacle that comes at them.

These wrestlers’ ages five to 15 years old compete in numerous matches in cities all over Texas such as El Paso, Dallas and Houston. The Spartans practice and compete in Folkstyle wrestling also known as Collegiate Wrestling. They work hard throughout the September through February wrestling season.

“The youth sports wrestling program has been up and running since 2007. We are expecting a big growth and consistency with Coach Carl Guillermo as the head coach,” Rene Nava, Youth Sports director.

Many parents who are new to the wrestling scene may have questions and concerns about their children competing in a sport they may know nothing about. They may have questions such as, “will my child be too weak to compete?

Too small? Will they get injured?

How will they handle competing?” While other parents, who are familiar with the sport, are extremely excited to introduce wrestling to their children. This is a sport they may have once enjoyed.

Angie O’Malley, mother of first time wrestler, Aiden, was asked why she decided to register her son for wrestling. “I wanted my son to experience something new and learn to strive for what he wants and never give up,” said O’Malley.

Wrestling teaches the children self-confidence, hard work, self-improvement, sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and page 38

self-defense. These qualities promote self-worth, respect and confidence. “The most rewarding part of coaching is seeing the kids perform the moves in competition and the smiles on their faces when they are having fun,” said Coach Guillermo. “I like seeing the kids, who were very shy at the start, build up their self-esteem throughout the season. I like seeing kids build up their confidence and then apply that on the mat.”

Wrestling is not new to Coach Guillermo who was on the wrestling team during both high school and college. He began coaching youth wrestling clubs and then moved on to coach middle school wrestling in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Coach Guillermo was also the assistant coach at Carlsbad High School for 12 years. During his time coaching at Carlsbad, the wrestling team was the 2013-2014 District 5A Champions and District 5A Team Dual Champions.

Coach Guillermo surrounds himself with assistant coaches that have a passion for wrestling. They volunteer their time to teach our youth this great sport. Wrestling instills the perfect combination of qualities needed to be successful in life: goal setting, hard work, determination, focus, love of challenges, love of competition, confidence, coachability, mental toughness, discipline, creativity, team work and accountability.

“I would like to see more wrestlers come out for the next season and to have more coaches involved in the program,” said Guillermo.

“I’m hoping to build up from where the previous coaches had the program and go to some national events.”

Intermediate Crochet Class: Improve your crochet skills with the Intermediate Crochet Class. This class is geared toward students who can read a pattern and have a basic knowledge of crocheting. The class is free of charge but students will need to have following items for the first session: 5 mm hook, Skein of yarn (worsted weight). The Intermediate Crochet class will make a blanket to donate to a non-profit organization. No children are allowed in attendance. The class meets from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Community Room.

Paint & Pour: Try our social painting class in the Community Room from 6 to 8 p.m. The $20 registration fee covers art supplies, instruction and one glass of wine. Sign up for registration to secure a spot. One person may pay for multiple people.

Harry Potter Book Night: Come out to the Mickelsen Community Library from 5 to 7 p.m. on February 4 for a ‘night of spells’ as we host the Harry Potter Book Night. There will be refreshments, crafts, games, giveaways – all with a Harry Potter theme. Dress as your favorite witch, wizard, magical creature or muggle. Prizes will be awarded for best costume.

Intermediate Knitting class: Improve your knitting skills with the Intermediate Knitting class. This class is recommended for individuals with a basic knowledge of knitting and who are able to read a pattern. The class is free of charge, but students will need to have circular needles, double ended needles (size 8), and one skein of worsted weight yarn for the first session. Children are not allowed in attendance. The class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays from February 10 through March 16 in the teen section of the library.

Crafts & Drafts: The library is partnering with the Centennial Club to bring you the first ever Crafts & Drafts. Join us from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 11 at the Centennial Club for a beer and crafts. The $10 entrance fee gets you one draft beer and access to all of the craft stations. Refreshments will be provided as well. This event is geared toward adults ages 21 and older.

Teen Tech Week: Celebrate Teen Tech Week from March 7 through 12 with the theme “Create it at your Library.” Teen Tech Week showcases all of the great digital resources and services that are available to help teens succeed in school and prepare for college and 21st Century careers. The library will have displays on our databases and technology and careers.

Maker Expo: The library will host a Maker Expo on March 12. It will provide teens with a chance to get hands-on with new and emerging technologies. 3D pens, 3D printer demo, EggBot Pro, Circuit kits, robotic kits, Lego kits, button makers, perler bead station and a stop animation kit will be available for use from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is geared toward ages 13-18.

INSPIRING CREATIVITY through Art MWRRECREATION

In 2016, the program is planning to expand to 24 multiple day art workshops, as well as one-day condensed courses. The goal is to inspire students to try unfamiliar arts and crafts activities. It is all about getting out and being creative.

Robin Fox, Framing Bliss In early 2015, the El Paso Art Association (EPAA) partnered with the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, to sponsor a series of Soldier Art workshops. The workshops were designed to fit with the local military community and their interests in visual arts and crafts. The focus is to encourage Soldiers and their Family members to pursue advanced expertise and possible “career opportunities” in arts through beginner and intermediate classes.

The Soldier Art Workshop program is the first of the EPAA’s programs and is designed as a model for other art projects that have a similar goal of helping Soldiers and Families through creative expression.

Instructors for the pilot program are all professional artists in their respective fields and local to the area. Some of the programs included water coloring, sculpturing, photography, oil painting, mixed media encaustic and acrylics. Each session costs $10 for active-duty Soldiers and $15 for all other DoD ID card holders. The fee includes materials as well as instruction compared to similar classes that range from $100-$200 off post. An amazing value, generously given to us by the EPAA as a way to recognize the hard work and dedication of Soldiers and their Families!

Throughout this past year, the program hosted three museum exhibits at the Chamizal Memorial, El Paso Museum of Art and at the 1AD museum on Fort Bliss. Each one of these exhibits showcased the students’ and instructors’ work during their time at one of the 20 workshops. www.bliss.armymwr.com

Remembering the

FORT BLISS OF DAYS PAST Leba Hirsch, Army Family Team Building Army life hasn’t always looked the way it does today. I was reminded of this recently when an Army veteran and his wife returned to Fort Bliss to reminisce and explore the installation. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes were stationed here in the 1960s and started their Family at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. As they drove around the installation, they realized that almost nothing looked familiar. Other than the historic senior officer housing on Sheridan, the only building they recognized was the Officers’ Mess (an earlier name for the Officers’ Club): now known as the Army Community Service (ACS) Family Resilience Center (FRC). I was privileged to take them on a tour of our facility, and I learned as much as I taught them.

They spoke of past events such as a New Years’ Eve celebration and all-you-can-eat brunches while I told them about the programs we offer today. ACS was in its infancy during their tenure here: they weren’t even aware of its existence. There was no Family Readiness Group, no program to help introduce them to the community. Mrs. Holmes only knew the neighbors in her courtyard. The Army Family Action Plan (used to inform the Army of changes to consider making to improve military and veteran lives) didn’t exist. Programs like Family Advocacy and the Exceptional Family Member Program weren’t providing services either. Military Family members learned about the Army purely by experiencing it, and by making a lot of mistakes! Army Family Team Building (AFTB) wasn’t there to teach about the chain of command, social functions or resources. Nothing was in place to help her find employment or learn budgeting, investing, or stress management skills to help her in her daily life. Mrs. Holmes’s refrain, as she learned of ACS programs, was “I wish we’d had that!”

In years past, the adage was “If the Army wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one!”. Families were less visible to the military command. Certainly they were there.

But their comfort and well-being were of far less importance than they are today. The military mission has always come first, and that’s as it should be. However, we’ve realized in the past 25 years that educating and empowering Families has a positive effect on the successful completion of the mission. We’ve seen programs created with just this purpose in mind. ACS has expanded from a lending closet and information source to a thriving organization that includes advocacy and education.

My time with Mr. and Mrs. Holmes was an excellent reminder for us all. Don’t take your resources for granted! They didn’t exist 50 years ago, and they aren’t likely to exist in the same format 50 years from now. Appreciate what you have. Explore, page 42

THE WBAMC FISHER HOUSE A WELCOMING PLACE TO BE

Amabilia Payen, WBAMC Public Affairs Sitting snuggly and slightly down the hill of the William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC), is a building where Families can stay for free as their loved one recovers in the hospital. This cozy and warm building is known as the Fisher House. For over 21 years, it has housed over 2,400 Families who come to be with their recovering loved ones who may be an active duty service member, a dependent or a veteran.

The WBAMC Fisher House was first constructed in 1994 by the Fisher House Foundation. When it was finished, the keys were handed over to WBAMC and has been successful in its mission ever since.

Jennifer Daugherty is the house manager and her responsibilities entail booking the Families, ensuring there is plenty of room and amenities to help ease their stay.

“I find a lot of joy and fulfillment in my job,” said Daugherty.

“We try our best to make what is possibly a difficult time for them as easy as possible.”

The Fisher House Foundation was founded by Zachery Fisher, who was a builder, philanthropist and patriot. In 1990, Fisher and his wife, Elizabeth, began constructing Fisher House homes for Families of hospitalized military personnel. Their first home was at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The WBAMC Fisher House was constructed with the original floor plans that Fisher had drawn in the initial planning of this glorious movement to help military Families in need.

The WBAMC Fisher House runs entirely on monetary donations. Volunteers can go to the Fisher House or call to find out how they can assist the program. When people come to volunteer at the Fisher House, they provide assistance to Families and veterans in need. Some of the things volunteers can do are bring in meals and snacks for residents and organize donation drives to acquire products such as toiletries, paper, and cleaning and laundry supplies. Sometimes, there may be young children staying at the house, so baby items such as clothing, diapers and baby food are also appreciated. Volunteering babysitting services helps parents as they focus on their hospitalized loved one.

Volunteers can also help decorate the Fisher House for any holiday. Toy drives or individually donated children’s toys are encouraged. Gifts can be left at the Fisher House for the children to open.

Volunteers and donators may ask for the Fisher House Wish List which contains a list of items, such as backyard play sets, laptop computers, books and small appliances that the manager would like to add or replace for the house. www.bliss.armymwr.com

Sometimes, given the weather, volunteers can also tend to the landscaping surrounding the house. The WBAMC Fisher House is maintained by the hospital but is limited as far as landscape enhancements. Volunteers can step in and plant seasonal flowers to make the home more inviting.

The WBAMC Fisher House relies immensely on monetary donations and volunteer participation. Beginning in January 2016, volunteers will be needed more than ever as the Fisher House will be closing in preparation for a major renovation project. Families will be re-located and booked through the Hotel for Heroes program, which was also founded by the Fisher House Foundation. Once the doors are closed, volunteers will be needed to move furniture out and into storage.

When the Fisher House renovations are complete, volunteers will be needed once more to move all the furniture back in.

with the directions to the Well Baby Clinic. They are lifting spirits of Soldiers at our local USO, providing support and encouragement to service members who are on the way to their next deployment.

What motivates these exceptional individuals to selflessly give of their time and talents to the Fort Bliss community, communities around our nation, and around the world?

There are various reasons that motivate volunteers to give to others. Some volunteers are driven to serve to meet new people, some volunteer to gain new skills or maintain skills and others volunteer to be a part of a group. But two of the most noted reasons why people volunteer are simply to help others and to give back. These two reasons are echoed by the numerous volunteers who contribute to improving the wellbeing of Soldiers and Family members.

No matter what inspires an individual to volunteer, it is important to show appreciation for their commitment and devotion. There are numerous ways to show appreciation for the support of a volunteer. One of the simplest is to just say, “thank you.” Other ways of appreciation are writing a letter of gratitude for their support of your organization, taking them to lunch, treating them to a cup of coffee or recognizing their birthday. It does not matter how you say thank you, what matters is letting them know they are appreciated. The Fort Bliss community understands that volunteers are our strength and backbone. They are a strong support system for Soldiers and family members. To honor their devotion and support within our community, we will celebrate National Volunteer Week from April 10 - 16. This week is an ideal time for everyone to honor volunteers for their tremendous contributions.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Volunteer’s Rock!!

The theme is a reflection of the support and commitment of the volunteers who stand strong behind our Soldiers and Families, improving their quality of life and well-being.
