Overview History is not as inclusive as we need it to be. BlackPoppyRose provides a unique global narrative about the contributions made by communities regarded as minorities who contributed extensively to the foundation building of the European & American Nations.

We Remember 365 Days a year Every Month

We aim to educate and empower people of all the communities in the world with these essential narratives that are missing, starting here in the UK.

Who we are BlackPoppyRose was launched in September 2010 by Selena Carty. We became BlackPoppyRose CIC, a Social Enterprise in 2019 BlackPoppyRose was created to be a symbol that opens a conversation about the contributions made by the African/Black/West Indian/Pacific Islands communities to various wars/histories since the 16th century. A symbol that signifies pride, honour and glory, with the hope that future generations will be inspired by these largely untold historical legacies. We explore history which includes when Africa, The West Indies, North & South America, Asia, Australia & The Pacific Islands were under the occupation of European Empires and before. We spread this narrative within the entire UK and the World. Did you know Britain and France owned 2/3’s of the African continent in the late 1800’s?

Our Vision Our vision is to remove the stigma and stereotypes widely spread and create a clearer picture on the facts within history that includes and has always included everyone. To empower, educate, elevate and inform those who are missing key historical narratives to build lasting relationships across all cultural communities. Assisting with the preservation and dissemination of African/Black/West Indian/Pacific Islanders histories so it is not left deep inside the archives.

Testimonial “The Black Poppy Rose delivered two thought provoking workshops ; Black Britain- Y.I.W.A.E – You are, I am, We are, Enough and World War I Black Contributions. Both events were attended by cross government colleagues. Feedback from the events have been phenomenal! There was so much good content that most attendees said they were not aware of. It was great to see Black stories told authentically. There is a resounding sense of pride associated to the impact and contribution Black people have made to the UK.” Thank you to Selena for all the research she does and for delivering workshops that remind us all that representation matters!!! We have more reasons to love ourselves and that isn’t a bad thing, is it?!!!!

Our Supporters Since 2010 has been receiving growing support year by year. We have had a wide variety of assistance from all over the world. All of which has allowed us to increase our profile and establish roots in many communities. Without the support BlackPoppyRose would still be an idea. To the right are a few of our supporters The many many volunteers who help distribute BlackPoppyRoses throughout the UK are our greatest strength as without them BlackPoppyRose would not have reached as far as we have.

Selena Carty Cultural & Ancestral Consultant : Genealogist Founder of BlackPoppyRose African/Black/West Indian/Pacific Islanders communities have contributed consistently to civilizations & empires, even in the face of adversity and despite mankind’s abhorrent treatment and atrocities. Throughout history, many generations have been displaced; our memories, our pain, our losses are universal. We have travelled the world finding information, ex servicemen, families, archives, graves, headstones, monuments and more. This has allowed BlackPoppyRose to cover a wider conversation around the importance of telling a truthful history. “Liberate the minds of men and ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men.” The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
