Weusedqualitativemethodsforthisproject,which includedparticipantobservation,one-on-oneinterviews, andlisteningsessions.Wechoseaqualitativeapproach becausecivichomes,especiallyfromtheperspectiveof communitymembers,areunderexplored.Weneededto providespacetoheardirectlyfromcommunitymembers onhowtheydefinecommunity,whatbringstheminto organizations,andwhatkeepsthemconnectedto organizations.1Wesatdownwithcommunitymembers andaskedthemabouttheirworkwiththeseorganizations, theissuestheyfeltweremostpertinentintheirlivesand thelivesoftheircommunitymembers,andhowwellthey understoodandengagedintheterminologyofacivic home.
Forthisresearch,wesoughtorganizationswithgeographic, programmatic,andracialdiversity.Thesecommunitypartners representacross-sectionoftheUSandorganizeonarangeof issuesfromimmigrationtocriminaljusticereform.
