Subaru has 5 new dealer partners

SUBARU has confirmed the appointment of five new dealer partners as it looks to grow its presence in the UK.

The Japanese outfit has signed up with Wool and Bovington Motors Ltd in Dorset, Station Garage in Kilgetty, and Crayford & Abbs in Norfolk, all of which are already up and running.

Meanwhile, Green 4 in Coventry opened on March 1 and Invicta Subaru Crawley is scheduled for March 22. All five appointments have been made since the start of the year.

Cut

VAT on EVs and bring back grants – Stellantis

boss

calls for help to drive electric car sales

Stellantis UK boss Eurig Druce has called on the government for a multi-point assistance package to help car makers hit their ZEV mandate targets.

Speaking exclusively ahead of his appearance at this year’s Car Dealer Live event on March 13, Druce said a cut in VAT on the purchase price of new electric cars should be introduced as soon as possible.

He said this, and his other ideas to boost demand, would have ‘very little cost to the government’ and help car makers hit tough ZEV mandate targets that require them to sell 80% EVs within five years.

Druce said this year’s target of hitting EV sales of 28% will be ‘very tough’ for car makers and warned that hitting the 80% goal by 2030 ‘would not happen naturally’ without help from the government.

The Stellantis chief said he wants to see:

• VAT cut on new EV sales

• Public charging infrastructure outpace EV sales with help from the taxpayer

• VAT on public charging cut to the same rate as home charging (5%)

• Road tax cut for EVs

• Return of the plug-in car grant

Druce took over from Maria-Grazia Davino, who left Stellantis to head-up BYD Europe in October, and leads Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Abarth, and DS in the UK.

He said: ‘From a government point of view, we need a number of different items. First of all, a strategy that’s 360. What I mean by that is that there is support and an acceleration in terms of charging.’

Druce believes it is vital the number of public chargers far outweighs the number of electric cars on the road. He thinks charging companies need support from the government to ramp up installs.

He added: ‘At the moment, there’s sufficient chargers out there for the number of BEVs in the market.

‘But if you want to compel a directional move in terms of the demand from the consumer, you have to make it really, really, really easy to charge and therefore have a number of chargers way in excess of the number that are required in the market.’

BMW puts brakes on EV production at Mini Oxford, blaming slow sales

BMW has put plans to build electric Minis at its Oxford plant on ice, blaming a European slowdown of EV sales.

The German carmaker announced in September 2023 that its Oxford plant would begin production of the Mini Electric and Aceman in 2026.

But, despite an investment worth £600m to ready the plant to build the models, it has paused plans indefinitely, blaming stuttering EV sales in Europe. The news was first revealed by Auto Express.

A statement seen by the publication read: ‘Given the multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry, the BMW Group is currently reviewing the timing for reintroducing battery-electric Mini production in Oxford.’ Plant Oxford currently builds petrol versions of the Mini Cooper hatchback and Convertible, while the electric Mini Cooper and Aceman hatchback are imported from China. The decision to expand the factory at Cowley, Oxfordshire, would have seen those electric models built in the UK.

Police investigate Vertu ‘eco’ attacks

POLICE have officially launched an investigation into so-called ‘eco-terrorists’ who targeted two Vertu Land Rover sites with ‘mindless’ attacks.

Car Dealer reported how Vertu Land Rover Exeter and Vertu Land Rover Truro had fallen victim to environmental campaigners. The protestors drilled holes in the tyres of several vehicles, meaning that they had to be replaced, much to the fury of Vertu boss Robert Forrester. Devon and Cornwall Police say an investigation is ongoing.

GOVERNMENT

Plug-in Van Grant stays until 2026

THE Plug-in Van Grant will remain in place until 2026 after the government announced an extension to the scheme as part of a bumper £120m funding package.

The initiative, which allows businesses and van drivers get money off the cost of an electric van, was due to end in April, but will now extend into next year.

The decision has been made to help ‘cut red tape blocking businesses from switching to zero emission vans’.

Suzuki to slash UK dealer network as bosses blame impact of ZEV mandate targets

SUZUKI is to slash the size of its UK dealer network with bosses blaming at the impact of the ZEV mandate.

Car Dealer has learned that the Japanese brand is to close around 30 sites across the country, taking its network from 129 to roughly 100.

Affected retailers were made aware of the decision throughout January, with new UK boss David Kateley

FINANCE

Constellation raises its stake in Vertu

CONSTELLATION Automotive Group has taken its stake in dealer group Vertu to over 10% for the first time, new documents have revealed.

Submissions made this week via the London Stock Exchange show that the Cinch and We Buy Any Car Owner now holds 33,146,043 voting shares in Vertu.

That amounts to 10.007% of all voting rights, up from the 9.758% share in had previously.

Constellation is ultimately owned by the private equity house TDR Capital, the firm behind Asda and Euro Garages and its shares in Vertu are owned by its subsidiary ‘Cag Vega 2 Limited’.

EMPLOYMENT

personally calling every dealer to be impacted. The vast majority of those to be cut off have been offered the chance to stay on as licensed repair centres.

Insiders tipped Car Dealer off to the plans and Suzuki confirmed the closures when approached. A spokesman said it has carried out a ‘representation revision’ due to the ‘implementation of the ZEV mandate regulation’.

Closure puts jobs at BCA under threat

AROUND 200 BCA workers are at risk of losing their jobs after the firm announced the shock closure of one of its remarketing centres.

The auction company is to wind down its Chipping Warden site, with operations moving to existing sites in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Workers were informed on January 28 that the centre would shut down for good in 45 days time. The move is said to have ‘shocked and angered’ employees, who were blindsided by the news which ‘came out of the blue’. One employee told the Banbury Guardian: ‘There are now a lot of people at BCA very upset about the decision.’

Used car prices rise 0.4% in February

FRANCHISED dealers focussing on used cars sales helped drive a 0.4% rise in prices in February, data shows.

New figures from Cap HPI show values of three-year/60,000-mile second-hand cars rose by £40.

The uplift marked a change from the 0.1% fall seen at the beginning of the year, hinting that the used car market is getting set for a strong period of demand.

Used cars priced up to £5,000 saw the largest increase in value, up £60 or 1.8%. Vehicles priced between £30,000 and £50,000 remained stable at -0.1% (£60), and those over £50,000, saw a slight drop of 0.2% (£160).

Marshall Motor Group axes VW dealerships

STAFF at two long-standing Volkswagen dealerships are facing job losses after Marshall Motor Group took the decision to axe the sites.

Employees at Marshall Volkswagen Horsham and Marshall Volkswagen Aylesbury were told that they could soon be out of work as a result of the closures, which are expected to be finalised by the end of March.

Marshall bosses are said to have told the dealerships that they are making a ‘significant loss’ for the business and that closing them was the ‘only option’.

Family-run Hawkins Motors bucks trend

FAMILY-run dealer group Hawkins Motors has bucked industry-wide trends to post an improved profit in its latest set of annual accounts.

According to documents filed with Companies House, the Cornish car dealer made a pre-tax profit of £3.78m in the 12 months to June 30, 2024. The result marks a 13.5% increase on the £3.33m the outfit marked last year, despite the vast majority of other dealers reporting a slump in profits in 2024.

The accounts say that Hawkins enjoyed a year of ‘record sales’ with margins ‘holding firm’ throughout.

Pinewood moves to snap up AI firm Seez

PINEWOOD Technologies has revealed plans to acquire Dubaibased automotive AI business Seez in a deal worth around £33.3m.

The business, which used to form part of dealer group Pendragon, has been a minority investor in Seez since September 2024.

But now it intends to acquire the remaining 90.9% share and expects the deal to be completed on March 19, 2025. The acquisition will see Pinewood develop important AI tools to its product range, ‘potentially saving years of development work’, said analysts Zeus Capital.

Stellantis-backed

Chinese EV brand Leapmotor

plans to have 80 dealers by end of 2025

CHINESE electric brand Leapmotor has laid out plans to have 80 dealerships by the end of 2025 and to offer the ‘best value’ electric cars in the UK.

Officially launching this month, Leapmotor already has 44 dealers on its books, and is aiming to have 60 by the summer, rising to 80 by end of the year. Big players to have already signed up include Arnold Clark and

Evans Halshaw, along with smaller multi-franchise dealer groups such as Arbury and Snows.

All dealers will already have franchises with Stellantis, with Leapmotor being positioned alongside other Stellantis brands in showrooms. Stellantis took a 21% share of the Chinese firm in October 2023, and at the same time created Leapmotor International.

JOBS: Aston Martin has axed a staggering 170 jobs as the it looks to make drastic cuts in response to tumbling losses. The manufacturer said the measures will see 5% of its workforce cut from the wage bill as part of a major exercise to slash costs.

COURTS: A used car dealer has been ordered to pay out more than £9,000 after a pensioner suffered ‘serious injuries’ when he fell six feet over a forecourt wall. He was inspecting a silver Skoda Yeti at Autodeals of Stroud in Gloucestershire when he was knocked back as he opened the tailgate.

USED CARS: Ford may have axed the Fiesta way back in the summer of 2023, but the much-loved supermini remains Britain’s favourite used car. That is according to fresh SMMT data which has revealed that the model was the UK’s best selling secondhand vehicle throughout 2024.

INDUSTRY: A proposed multibillion-pound merger between Honda and Nissan has fallen through after the carmakers were unable to agree terms. The $58bn deal, which also included Mitsubishi as a junior partner, would have created in the world’s third biggest carmaker.

SUPERCARS: New research has revealed that the number of supercars in the UK is up 4% as the total hit 23,323 for the year ending June 30, 2024. The data from accountancy group UHY Hacker Young showed Ferrari was the most popular supercar brand in the UK, with 14,714 currently on the road. Lamborghini saw the most growth.

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA T CABRIOLET

Power

The 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine pumps out 389bhp and 450Nm of torque.

The Carrera T has often been seen as the ‘true’ 911 model, but can this latest version bring something extra? Jack Evans finds out.

WHAT IS IT?

Porsche’s Carrera T has traditionally been the car most sought-after by drivers looking for a ‘pure’ 911 driving experience. Lighter and a little bit sharper than the standard 911 Carrera, the T has brought as much of an unfiltered driving style as possible, albeit with all of the usual luxuries that you’d expect from this sports car.

Now, for the 992.2-generation Carrera T, things have changed. Whereas the previous generations of this car have been Coupe-only, a drop-top has been added into the equation for the first time and it’s this model that we’re looking at in closer detail.

WHAT’S NEW?

The addition of a Cabriolet version is, of course, a big change for the 911 Carrera T. However, plenty of lightweight measures are implemented to help this Porsche shed some additional bulk, including thinner windows and reduced sound deadening. All versions get Porsche Active Suspension Management, too, which brings a 10mm drop in ride height over the standard Carrera for a sharper cornering experience.

As with other 911 Cabriolets, the Carrera T adopts a fabric-folding setup which can open or close in around 12 seconds. It’s quick enough to get you out of the rain should a sudden downpour hit.

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?

Powering the Carrera T is a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder producing 389bhp and 450Nm of torque. What separates the T from the rest of the 911 range is that it shuns Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission in favour of a six-speed manual. In fact, there’s no automatic option with the Carrera T – it’s manual shifting or nothing else. It’s a very potent setup, mind you, with 0-60mph coming in 4.5 seconds – you’ll go a shade quicker in the hard-top version – and flat-out, the T will manage 182mph. This 911’s 21.9 combined fuel consumption figure is about what you’d expect for a sports car of this type, too.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The Carrera T offers the kind of polished driving style that has become synonymous with modern-day 911 models. However, there’s an extra level of interaction that comes with six gears and three pedals, while the wood-finished shifter is a delight to use and gives you better control over the engine. It’s more than punchy enough to keep things interesting, too, with the turbocharged nature of the straight-six giving it an extra layer of flexibility. It’s quite happy cruising along, the T, but it’ll also take advantage of twistier sections of road

given the opportunity.

Style

The Carrera T follows some classic 911 styling, but there are some smaller changes to differentiate it from the rest of the range.

It’s pleasing to note that despite the removal of sound deadneing and thinner windows – not to mention a folding cloth roof – that the Carrera T remains impressively hushed at speed. The drop in ride height over a regular Carrera hasn’t made the car’s ride too fraught, either, and though larger potholes do shock this 911 it manages to deal with them well enough.

HOW DOES IT LOOK?

The Carrera T follows some classic 911 styling procedures, but there are some smaller aspects of its look that help to differentiate it from the rest of the range. There are the model-specific flashes down the flank, of course, and if you look in the triangular rear windows there are small shift pattern logos which shout loud and proud about the car’s manual gearbox.

As with other 911 models there’s plenty of scope for personalisation, too, with the Carrera T’s ‘Legends’ paint selection bring a wide number of choices, while our test car’s ‘Lugano Blue’ exterior paint sits within the the ‘Shades’ colour selection.

WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE?

The latest 992.2-generation interior represents a high point throughout the life of the 911, blending usable technology with a tangible level of quality and finish. It’s the same in the Carrera T, of course, though with some added extras. The most notable is the wooden gear selector which breathes a bit of old-school charm into the rather modern interior. It’s a lovely touch, in our eyes.

Elsewhere, we’ve got a good combination of physical controls and high-definition displays. As in other 911 models the Carrera T’s steering wheel is a joy to use and, fortunately for this drop-top version, is heated. The button to activate the wheel heating is hidden away, mind you, in the middle of the lower spoke. It’s almost like a hidden ‘Easter Egg’ that has been equipped to many 911 models but missed by a lot of owners.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?

Prices for the Carrera T Cabriolet start from £121,300, representing quite the premium over the £111,300 coupe version. Naturally, the largest difference between the two is that folding roof, so you’ll really need to think about whether the top-down experience is worth the extra cash.

Standard equipment levels are good, mind you, with four-way adjustable sport seats coming included on all cars alongside 20-inch alloy wheels and the very usable central infotainment system. As with any Porsche model, go too wild and you’ll quickly ramp up the car’s price.

VERDICT

The Porsche 911 Carrera T Cabriolet continues a long line of models that bring an extra layer of engagement over standard cars but without the drawbacks of a fully track-focused GT model. This latest version is no different; it’s just as usable as a ‘regular’ 911, but feels more spirited as and when you need it to be.

Is the Cabriolet the one to choose? Well, it certainly broadens the appeal of the Carrera T, but its significant extra cost over the coupe means you’re going to have to get the top down on a regular basis to make it worthwhile.

It’s just as usable as a ‘regular’ 911, but feels more spirited as and when you need it to be.

KEY SELLING POINTS:

Cabin

The interior blends usable technology with a tangible level of quality and finish. The wooden gear selector adds some old-school charm to the modern cabin.

usable day-to-day than you’d expect

DEAL CLINCHER:

The Carrera T could be all the 911 you’d ever need... and one which looks the part, too.

Why Auto Trader is putting so much confidence in Co-Driver

AI tools

Ever since Auto Trader launched its suite of Co-Driver tools last year, automotive retailers have had better access to AI solutions than ever before.

But did you know that the cutting edge platform has actually been ten years in the making? That is according to the outfit’s head of strategy & insights, Marc Palmer, who has been discussing the impact of the latest offering.

Made up of three different tools – Smart Image Management, AI Generated Descriptions and Vehicle Highlights – Co-Driver aims to help Auto Trader’s retail partners make better use of their time and resources. All three tools are now available as standard and proving a major hit with dealers.

Smart Image Management uses AI-powered image recognition to automatically categorise, reorder, and identify missing vehicle imagery based on Auto Trader’s market-leading consumer insights data, while AI Generated Descriptions can create detailed, engaging and factual descriptions in the click of a button.

Finally, Vehicle Highlights automatically highlights and promotes every vehicle’s most valuable and in-demand features, again using the power of Auto Trader data.

Palmer says that the groundbreaking package is testament to the hard work of Auto Trader’s data teams, as he backed Co-Driver to remain a ‘step ahead’ of the competition.

He told Car Dealer: ‘There are plenty of examples where AI is applied to lots of different things – but certainly car advertising – and it’s not really very trustworthy.

‘This really brings us to why this set of tools is a step ahead and a level up at least. That is because of all the learning, time and data that’s gone into it.

‘For retailers, this isn’t something where we’ve picked up a tool and added it on to Auto Trader so that retailers can advertise their cars – this has got at least a decades’ worth of learning in the background to make sure that what is shown really is the best. That is what sets our use of AI apart.

‘Auto Trader data is brilliant. It’s the best around because of the depth of it, the granularity, the constant learning within that data and that’s really the key to this set of tools because it underpins the use of the technology to really provide the best answers to the consumer and the best experience they can have.’

During an in depth chat with Car Dealer’s James Baggott, Palmer explained how Co-Driver is harnessing Auto Trader’s data in order to improve the customer experience.

He added that by deploying AI, retailers can take away some of the everyday burdens, freeing them up to do what they do best – selling cars.

‘We have been working for a long long time on establishing some really strong vehicle taxonomy,’ he said.

‘It’s so important to making sure that the data which goes into a vehicle description is accurate and that the vehicle is correctly described.

‘Essentially, the tool is picking up all that rich data, it uses AI, it uses the large language model capabilities to provide a really good vehicle description, making sure that it’s accurate, that it’s articulate, that it reads really well and that the grammar’s right – the sorts of things that a consumer would expect from a good experience.

‘It takes a long time to make sure that the specification is accurate and then to try to put some flavour into it and making sure it’s all working well, that’s quite a challenge and it takes quite a bit of time.

‘This is a great use of technology to take a lot of that burden away and make sure that the vehicle description is accurate and make sure that the consumer is seeing a car which is well described and everything is as it should be.’

The sky’s the limit

IT’S clear from our chat with Palmer, that bosses at Auto Trader are feeling incredibly confident in their latest offering to dealers. But how far could the technology go?

It is a question which Baggott was keen to put to Palmer, who believes that this could only be the start of major changes in the way that car dealers do business.

He added: ‘It’s already been going very far. Our data scientists and data engineering community has been working really hard for a number of years on making sure that we’re providing the best tools and data for retailers.

‘There’s a lot of stuff that’s already been going on. I like to think of it as these are things that have been going on in the back of the showroom and now we’re bringing to the fore things that would effectively be in the front of the showroom.

‘I think what’s important is that we develop tools which are helping retailers in a number of different ways. We talk about valuations, price indicators and retail ratings. All of those things – the metrics that we use – are helping retailers add a bit of insight to their instinct so that they are making more informed decisions.

‘Now of course, we also have things that are helping to save retailers time and providing a better

AI could be applied. I think it’s just important that we make sure we are helping challenges by finding ways

Plug-in Van Grant extended into 2026

THE government has extended the Plug-in Van Grant until 2026 as part of a £120m funding package aimed at supporting businesses switching to electric vehicles. The scheme, which was set to end in April, provides grants of up to £2,500 for small vans and £5,000 for larger ones. The Department for Transport also announced the removal of additional training requirements for electric van drivers to cut costs and ease hiring. Taxi drivers will receive a £4,000 grant for zero-emission cabs, and the grant cap for wheelchair-accessible vehicles will increase to £50,000.

What do I think?

If the car industry shouted any louder for help you might find Lassie looking down a well… This is at least a start from the government and targets an area of the electric market that really needs it. I’ve not met a builder or tradesperson yet who is prepared to swap their van for an EV, so financial incentives here are crucial. If you thought the car driving public were sceptical of EVs, don’t, whatever you do, ask a builder what they think. This extension was absolutely crucial. Now we need something for car buyers too.

Used car prices

rise 0.4% in February but EVs and diesels fall

USED car prices increased by 0.4% in February, with three-year-old vehicles at 60,000 miles rising by £40, according to Cap HPI. Cars priced under £5,000 saw the biggest gains, up 1.8%, while higher-priced vehicles remained stable. One-year-old models rose slightly by 0.1% due to manufacturer discounts. However, used electric vehicle prices continued to decline, with one-year-old EVs dropping 1.6% (£540) and five-year-old models down 2.2% (£400). Analysts predict a potential market shift in April with increased supply from fleet returns and part-exchanges, though any downward impact on values is expected to be moderate.

What do I think?

All the experts predicted it and now here’s the data to prove it – used car prices actually going up again. The Covid years impact on the used car parc is very much being felt in 2025 as supply is still low and after a strong start for used car sales to the year many in the trade are fighting for stock, pushing prices up. This is good news for dealers as there are no big falls predicted to be coming any time soon. The last thing this industry needs is any more shocks.

‘Take note you retirees because the heating’s on here if you fancy some warm in an upmarket store. The staff are all marvellous, with broad welcome smiles, it’s not a bad place to stay for a while.’

Part of a poem by Karen Corradi, a customer of Steven Eagell Toyota Oxford, who was so impressed by the service she was given, she penned a homage to the site.

Marshall Motor Group axes VW dealerships as staff face job losses and ‘tough goodbye’

MARSHALL Motor Group is closing Volkswagen dealerships in Aylesbury and Horsham, with staff facing job losses as the sites are set to shut by the end of March. Employees were reportedly caught by surprise, with insiders stating the closures were due to ‘significant losses’ at both locations. A consultation period is underway, but no alternative roles have been offered. Volkswagen Group UK described the decision as part of a ‘necessary evolution’ of its retail network. Marshall Motor Group declined to comment.

What do I think?

The turbulence at Marshall continues. Previous boss Daksh Gupta was proud of the relationship he had with the VW Group, and once told me that if you can’t make money with VW in the Home Counties there’s a serious problem. Interesting, then, that Marshall Motor Group is struggling with these dealerships. The VW brand is incredibly strong and the product line-up diverse and attractive. Most dealer groups would be falling over themselves to get the franchise, not close them.

Used car dealer blocks Land Rover dealership entrance with truck until his car is repaired

Used car dealer Rob Kelly blocked the entrance to Vertu Land Rover Leeds with a 7.5-tonne truck after being told his warranty was void on his Urban Land Rover Defender. Kelly, who owns Exclusive Automotive, shared the standoff on TikTok, where millions have viewed it. He argued the warranty should remain valid despite a delayed service. After police intervened, he returned the next day for more protests. Eventually, Vertu and JLR agreed to provide a new engine as a goodwill gesture, resolving the dispute after a meeting with dealership representatives.

What do I think?

While I can’t condone this sort of behaviour, this story shows the power of social media, especially video sharing platforms like TikTok. Millions of people viewed this used car dealer’s stand off with Vertu and the police, and it made for very uncomfortable viewing. The problem with publicity like this is it will embolden others to do the same, especially now they can see it generates the right results. What’s that about not giving in to… actually, I won’t say it.

Auto Trader launches its new AI tools

AUTO TRADER is rolling out AI Generated Descriptions and Vehicle Highlights, two new AI-driven tools designed to help dealers create engaging listings and increase advert views. Part of the firm’s Co-Driver suite, the tools tap into Auto Trader’s vast data network, using VIN specification details to generate detailed descriptions and highlight key vehicle features. The move follows the success of Smart Image Management, introduced last November, which is now used daily by 7,100 dealers. Auto Trader says the innovations are part of a long pipeline of planned AI-powered solutions aimed at improving dealer performance and profitability.

What do I think?

I’ve been running the AI Car Dealership Project, our used car business, for over a year now and I’ve tried to use as much AI as I can. The one thing I do still like to do myself, though, is write the adverts – it’s sort of my expertise after all. But I do realise there are many dealers out there who probably hate it. Collating all the right information and presenting it clearly is hard work, so any help like these new AI tools will be welcomed. I do fear it will make it harder for those dealers who were doing it right in the first place to stand out, though.

A 2010 Land Rover Defender 90 previously owned by King Charles III and Queen Camilla is set to be auctioned by Iconic Auctioneers on March 22 at the NEC in Birmingham. Finished in Keswick Green with a charcoal grey interior, the vehicle has covered just 24,595 miles and is expected to sell for between £43,000 and £50,000.

CAR NEWS ROUND-UP

Manufacturers have been refining their models and producing new ones. We look at some of the results...

New Spectre is Rolls-Royce’s most powerful model ever made BLACK BADGE

New paint, Union Jack and roof box options

MINI has increased its range of options for its model line-up to help boost their appeal.

The Cooper, Convertible and Countryman will be available with a choice of nine exterior paint finishes including Smokey grey, British Racing green and Chili red.

The Cooper can now be optioned with a roof box, while the Convertible will now be available with a Union Jack design for its fabric roof.

ROLLS-ROYCE’S new Black Badge Spectre has become the most powerful model in the company’s history. The electric model brings 650bhp and 1,075Nm of torque, enabling a 0-60mph time of just 4.1 seconds. Those power outputs represent a significant uplift on the 577bhp and 900Nm of torque that you’d get from the standard Spectre.

Junior Ibrida price will undercut rivals

ALFA ROMEO has revealed prices and specifications for its new Junior Ibrida SUV.

Prices start at £27,895, undercutting rivals such as the Peugeot 2008 hybrid by more than £3,000. The car is powered by a 1.2-litre threecylinder petrol engine mated to a 48V lithium-ion battery and electric motor – producing 159bhp. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloys, LED headlights and keyless entry.

As with nearly all Rolls-Royce models, the Black Badge Spectre includes several additions which refer to the company’s past. The new Infinity Mode harks back to a special switch on the throttle of a Submarine Spitfire fighter plane. With it, pilots could unlock an extra burst of power when required – which is just what the new Infinity Mode button on the Spectre’s steering wheel does.

Popular XC60 given updates for 2025

VOLVO has revealed updates to one of its best-selling models – the XC60 SUV.

The car has the new UX infotainment system with a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen running Google-based software. Volvo says this is twice as fast as before. Exterior design now has similar design cues from the XC90 SUV. At the front, there is a new air intake, and at the back, the tail lights are now darker.

Spec for new Urban Cruiser SUV revealed

TOYOTA has revealed specifications for its upcoming Urban Cruiser electric SUV.

The model will come with a choice of three trim levels and the option of 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs –although their electric ranges have not at this stage.

The entry-level Icon grade features 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, ambient lighting and a reversing camera.

DS No8 goes on sale priced from £50,790

THE new DS No8 has officially launched in the UK with prices starting from £50,790. Acting as an electric flagship for the DS range, the new No8 will be available in two trim levels, while there’s also the option of two- or four-wheel-drive and three power outputs.

Two battery capacities – 73.7kWh and 97.2kWh – come fitted to the entry-level car and Long Range versions respectively. DS claims you should be able to get up to 341 miles from the smaller-battery No8, while those equipped with the larger battery can return up to 466 miles in frontwheel-drive variants. Four-wheel-drive versions see this range drop to 427 mils instead. A maximum charge speed of 160kW means that the No8 can go from 20 to 80 per cent battery state in 27 minutes.

Upcoming EV4 to broaden EV line-up

KIA has released a first look at its EV4 electric vehicle.

The Korean firm expects the new EV4 – which will be available in both hatchback and saloon layouts – to ‘broaden appeal’ of its electric line-up of cars. Karim Habib, executive vice president and head of Kia Global Design, said: ‘The Kia EV4 is a clear reflection of our commitment to rethink mobility and expand the boundaries of what design can achieve.’

Dual motor setup beefs up electric offering

PEUGEOT is adding a new dualmotor setup to its E-3008 and E-5008 electric SUVs.

Announced as part of a series of line-up expansions, the two cars will get a dual-motor setup – one positioned on the front axle and another on the rear – bringing a combined output of 321bhp. It’ll make the two cars some of the most potent offered by the French firm and both will be arriving in dealerships in the coming weeks.

NEWS AND THOUGHTS FROM THE CAR DEALER PODCASTS

It hadn’t quite dawned on me the fact that there are literally no Chinese cars in the US because of these tariffs.

Motorway boss calls for tariffs on Chinese cars as we discuss government support for EVs

Motorway boss James Wilson has backed controversial calls for the UK to impose tariffs on Chinese carmakers in order to protect the UK’s automotive industry.

At present, the UK does not impose any tariffs on cars imported from China, leading to the enormous growth of the likes of BYD, GWM and Jaecoo over recent years.

However, there are fears about what the influx could mean for the British carmaking industry, which is struggling to keep up with its state-backed Chinese rivals.

In the US, Chinese imports are currently subject to enormous tariffs of over 100%, while the EU imposes charges of up to 35%.

The latter has proved incredibly controversial, with China lodging an official complaint with the World Trade Organisation over the issue last year.

Officials in Beijing say that such charges are ‘an abuse of trade remedies’ but there remain growing calls for similar tariffs to be introduced in the UK.

Appearing on a recent episode of the Car

Dealer Podcast, Motorway COO, Wilson, who will be speaking at Car Dealer Live 2025, says that he ‘strongly believes’ that such charges should be introduced.

He told hosts James Batchelor and Jon Reay: ‘I was out at NADA back in January and I was listening to a talk about Chinese manufacturers.

‘It hadn’t quite dawned on me the fact that there are literally no Chinese cars in the US because of these tariffs.

‘The thrust of this talk I was listening to was go to Mexico and check out BYD dealerships there to understand what these cars are really like because literally there are none in the US, which is not a surprise. I strongly believe unless we put the tariffs on them, we’ll see a massive shift towards Chinese vehicles because there’s a whole segment of customers that are less invested in some of the traditional brands and they’re very open to go in with those cars and those vehicles are very good quality as well.’

‘I think it will be very interesting to see how it plays out and as I say, how the government reacts – or doesn’t react to that – in light of all the other tariffs that are going on in the US and Europe.’

‘How

I went from being a failed mechanic to running my own used car dealership’

FOR every established legend of the used car industry, there is an up-and-coming young pup hoping to fill their shoes.

Among the most promising of that next generation is EA Automotive boss Elliot Ashley, who has already crammed a hell of a lot into his short career.

The 25-year-old was a recent guest on the Car Dealer Podcast, where he described his route to running his own successful firm, in an industry dominated by more experienced peers.

Ashely told hosts James Baggott and Jon Reay that he began life in the motoring industry

working as an apprentice mechanic at the age of just 15.

However, he eventually came to the decision that getting his hands oily was not for him and, after a brief stint running his own valeting business, he eventually found work at his local JLR franchise.

It was a role which ignited a spark for Ashley and now, just a few short years on, he already his own boss at EA Automotive.

The Taunton-based business currently stocks between 10 and 15 cars, with plans in place for further growth down the line.

As a self-confessed petrol head, Ashley handpicks all the cars himself, although he admits the tactic has seen him burnt on more than one occasion!

Reflecting on what comes next, he said: ‘I just want to keep it going. I’ve taken on another unit down a couple of units down from where I am here as well. I’ve bought a ramp, so I want to try and bring some of the prep costs inside the business, so have a mechanic in.

‘If I can find one for three days a week maybe, and they can come in and do the health checks, the servicing and do all that.’

Lloyds ring-fences

£1.2bn

for handling car finance crisis

Lloyds has almost tripled the amount of money it has assigned to handling the car finance crisis as the potential impact of the scandal continues to grow.

The banking giant has ring-fenced an additional £700m to deal with the situation, having already put aside £450m last year.

The extra funds takes the bank’s total provision to an eye-watering £1.2bn ahead of Close Brothers’ Supreme Court appeal later in the year.

Bosses say the decision to assign the additional cash was taken in response to last year’s landmark Court of Appeal decision against Close Brothers

The group has been openly critical of that ruling, with boss Charlie Nunn saying it had created an ‘investability problem’ for the UK.

Nunn also welcomed Rachel Reeves’ proposed intervention into the case, which has since been rejected by the Supreme Court.

Lloyds is among the most exposed lenders to the scandal, through its ownership of one of the UK’s biggest finance providers, Black Horse.

It has made the decision to give more funds despite its profits taking a significant hit in its latest set of annual accounts.

The results show that Lloyds reported a pre-tax profit of £6bn for 2024, a fifth lower than the £7.5bn generated the previous year, and coming in below analysts’ expectations.

The decline was driven by lower total income for the group, higher business expenses and the higher impairment charge.

The documents also directly addressed the impact of the commissions scandal, with the bank saying that ‘clearly significant uncertainty remains around the final financial impact’.

Supreme Court rejects Reeves’ intervention COURTS

THE Chancellor’s proposed intervention into the motor finance scandal has failed after the Treasury’s bid to give evidence to the Supreme Court was rejected.

Car Dealer reported in January that Rachel Reeves had written to the court in an effort to protect the wider UK economy from the fall-out.

In the submission, the Treasury argued it should be allowed to provide evidence in Close Brothers’ upcoming appeal against last year’s Court of Appeal ruling.

The Chancellor argued that the decision had ‘the potential to cause considerable economic harm and could impact the availability and cost of motor finance for consumers’.

The intervention was welcomed by the boss of Lloyds Banking Group, but it does not appear to have impressed the Supreme Court. Judges have now rejected the application, which means that the Treasury will not be allowed to give evidence to the crucial hearing.

The result of the Supreme Court’s decision is that the FCA is now the only third party able to make submissions in the case.

How to make your dealership’s social media unforgettable in 2025

In my 15 years in the motor trade, I’ve been asked by dealers countless times “How can I improve my social media?”

I must’ve looked at thousands of dealers’ social media channels during that time, and I’ve seen everything, from dealers dressed as Bruce Forsyth recreating Play Your Cards

Right with customers who’ve just bought a car, funny videos of dealers reviewing their stock and others donning Mexican wrestling masks and capes.

Others simply let their humour and personality shine through to connect with their audience, turning what would have been dull, forgettable posts and videos into something genuinely engaging.

I remember these examples specifically because they were memorable. Granted, some of them were whacky, and I’m not suggesting that every dealer buy wrestling trunks off Amazon for their next social media post. But those dealerships did something right, I can still recall their dealerships name years later, and that is the key point!

For every creative, outside-the-box post I’ve seen, I’ve also seen thousands of social media posts that look like everyone else’s, and, unsurprisingly, they usually get little to no engagement other than a like from the onsite mechanic and valeter.

Posting new stock that’s arrived with a description is fine, but if that’s all your doing, you’re just blending into the background posting adverts, and in my opinion, you’re missing a trick.

The dealerships that succeed on social media don’t just post for the sake of it, they tell a story, create a personality, and most importantly, engage their customers.

I always say social media should offer more than just entertainment. If spandex and funny antics aren’t your style, then offering advice and sharing your knowledge is just as valuable.

Post short videos on finance options, car-buying tips, behind-the-scenes insights, and EV explainers to position your dealership as a trusted source. For promotions, use videos to explain deals, polls to gauge interest, and real customer stories to make offers relatable.

I know many dealers are involved with local charities and sponsorships, so don’t be shy, shout about it to connect with people. Social media isn’t just another advertising platform, it’s an opportunity to build trust, entertain, educate and sell more stock. The more authentic and engaging your content is, the more likely people are to remember your dealership when they’re ready to buy a car.

So, what does your dealership’s social media say about you? Is it blending into the background, or is it making a lasting impression? We help our dealer partners with both marketing and finance. To learn how to get on board with us, visit our website for more information.

Posting new stock that’s arrived with a description is fine, but if that’s all your doing, you’re just blending into the background.

POLESTAR 2

The cool-looking 2 may not have the most exciting colour choices, but it makes up for it with a boatload of technology. Jack Evans reports.

We all carry more technology with us every day than ever before. Today, searching for an address or finding that ideal song is a question of taking out a smartphone and firing up an app. The problem is that we’ve all become accustomed to that level of interaction and ease of use which means that when it comes to our cars, there can be quite a drop-off in terms of technology.

It’s been a challenge faced by all car manufacturers and why, for many, it’s easier to hand over the job of in-car tech to a tried-and-tested partner to make sure that nothing goes wrong.

It makes a big difference in the Polestar 2 that I’m driving for the next few months. The main infotainment system runs Android’s Automotive OS and that means from the start you’ve got must-have apps like Google Maps and Spotify pre-loaded and ready to go. I’ve been able to pair my Google account with the 2, and that means I can search for a location on my phone from inside the house before ‘sending’ the instructions to the car. I get in the Polestar and everything is pre-loaded and ready to go. The navigation instructions are also sent to the screen ahead of you, which makes it a little easier to see where you’re meant to be off to without having to take your eyes away from the road too long.

The same goes for Spotify. I’ve now logged the car into my account and each time I get into it, my playlists and ‘starred’ songs are right there and waiting. It’s as seamless as using my phone, which is just how you want it to be.

There’s a bit of a drop-off when you do need to use your phone’s features, however. As I’ve mentioned, the Polestar 2 doesn’t have wireless Apple CarPlay – so you need to connect your phone via USB cable to mirror its display on the car’s screen – and when you do that, it’s not as seamlessly integrated as the ‘native’ apps.

The rest of the car is as seamless as can be, though. I’m still getting plenty of charge from a full top-up – around 330 miles, in current temperatures – and that means I’ve barely had to worry about finding a place to charge. Of course, I benefit massively from having a home charging unit – which is a game-changer in the EV ownership process – but the Polestar 2’s extensive range means that I’m not having to hook on to the house all that often.

As I’ve touched on in a previous report, the lack of a rear windscreen wiper is a bit of a pain. In the recent weeks with the grimy, gritty road conditions the rear of the 2 has been downright filthy and, without any mechanical way to clean it from within the car, I’ve resorted to wiping down the rear screen.

To be honest with you I hadn’t particularly noticed a massive switch-up in the driving experience, until driving home in relatively cold conditions from the airport recently. A stamp on the accelerator coming out of a roundabout caused the 2 to step out far more aggressively than I ever thought it would. With relatively low-resistance tyres and 490Nm of torque, the 2 swings out in a much sportier fashion than I’d initially thought. It makes the whole car feel a lot more dynamic, though you do need to be on your toes when things are chilly or particularly greasy outside.

It has all combined to make the 2 even more interesting to drive on a day-to-day basis.

Polestar 2 Long range single motor

This month’s highlight:

We’re enjoying the Polestar’s tech, especially the infotainment system with the integration of Google Maps and Spotify.
