Kohlmeisen sind die größten und zahlreichsten unter den Meisen-Arten. In ganz Europa zu Hause, sind sie überall leicht zu entdecken: in Wäldern und an Wiesenrändern ebenso wie in großen Parks und in kleinen Gärten. Da sie ihrer Heimat auch im Winter treu bleiben, nennt man sie Standvögel. Allerdings ist ihre Futtersuche in der kalten Jahreszeit mühsam.

Können sie sich von Frühjahr bis Herbst leicht von Insekten, Würmern, Larven und Sämereien ernähren, müssen sie an verschneiten Wintertagen meist lange nach Nahrung suchen. Deshalb mögen Meisen Menschen. Die von warmherzigen Zweibeinern aufgehängten »Meisenknödel« beinhalten alles, wonach sich Meisenmägen bei Eis und Schnee sehnen: Sonnenblumenkerne, Haferflocken, Schweinefett

Sieht so ein Schuft aus? Seit der Renaissance gilt »Reineke Fuchs« in Europa als Inbegriff frecher Durchtriebenheit.

Die auf niederdeutsch verfasste Bestseller-Fabel erzählt, wie dieses angeblich bösartige Tier es immer wieder schafft, durch geniale Lügengeschichten seinen Kopf aus der Schlinge zu ziehen. Tatsache ist, dass Rotfüchse absolut frühreif sind. Mit knapp drei Monaten gehen die Jungen zum ersten Mal mit der Mutter auf die Jagd. Wenig später fangen sie ihre Beute schon allein: in Wäldern, auf Feldern, sogar in Städten!
