Revolution or Rhizome?

Class struggle or an approach to the integral philosophy of contemporary man.

Any point of rhizome can -and should- be connected.

Carlos Garaicoa’s first solo show in Galleria Continua/Beijing constitutes a compendium of thoughts on the image western people have about China and the artist’s own vision in his second visit in the P.R. of China.

Many of the works in the show attempt to convey the artist’s deconstruction of a reality, which continuously surprises us and leaves us questioning. Chinese Checkers, a large scale Project and reinterpretation of the very popular Chinese game the artist used to play when he was a child, becomes now a gigantic poème - objet, where words incased in marbles allow three different languages - Spanish, Chinese and English - to reach an almost infinite projection (more than 60 million combinations); a fragile paper work called Bend City, in which the artist reinterprets the Asian tradition of origami and paper cutting, adapting it to a sculptural dimension; and The Year of the Rat, the artist’s first documentary work, which records Havana’s crumbling Chinatown, initially the first Chinatown in America, where he interviews locals and Chinese descendents about their knowledge on contemporary Chinese art, its architecture boom and the Red giant’s prospects.

Entwined are a dream glass tower of instruments making up an entire floating symphonic orchestra in the process of tuning up, (the chaos before the order, the essential perfection); a rhizome accumulation of carpenter hammers in a self-sustainable and self-destructive structure; a sculpture using books on architecture as a constructive element and a series of black and white photographs transforming the facades of Shanghai’s modern buildings into a double mirror where photography and drawing complete and exclude each other perfectly. This collection of pieces are the traces of a foreigner in present China pursuing a quest common to every human being, to explore the multiple paths of civil society, nature, language and art.

It’s precisely in the sense of the challenge, the competitiveness, that new Chinese art supposes to western artists that we could understand a work such as Group Show, where the artist, knowing the interest his colleagues have in the game, brought a pool table to the gallery and invited many Beijing artists to play. This way, the competitiveness moves exclusively to the playing field, allowing the artists-players to bypass any initial prejudice and get to know each other better, experiencing a camaraderie that can be impossible to reach if the rivalry imposed by the art world remains.

Revolution or Rhizome?, the work that gives title to the show, crowns the exhibition infusing the sarcastic mood found in some of the artist’s previous works, an incisive comment on the Cuban-Chinese politics, sifted by Warhol’s acerbic pop-art, that transforms historic icons into worn down images - by the infinite repetition of advertising and politics.

In the room, the question “Revolution or Rhizome?” brings one to the central theme in the show, imposing upon us the act of choosing, or impregnating within us the bug of doubt. Inspired

by Deleuze and Guattari’s work, the whole show deals with the concepts of multiplicity and chaos, the idea of necessary decentralization, the need of contemporary societies - and also of art language - to act as a rhizome, as an element that naturally becomes independent, continuously opening new possibilities of expansion and development and returning to the center when needed. In short, the opposite of our historic experience.

There are many thoughts I have been dealing with recently within my work, they mainly have to do with the idea of Accumulation, and in some way they are related to the idea of the Rhizome in French philosophers Deleuze and Guattari: Rhizome like a numerical growth and questions of infinity.

Without eagerness to conclude that A+B=C, I think that this idea of construction ad infinitum of the numerical sum, can be applied to Chinese culture, either in historical terms, in its social projections, and more recently in its economic, artistic avalanche, etc…

Beijing is a city that is getting to know Everything at an incredible high speed, so my show is a response to this and also to the idea that every human gesture can be infinite in space and time.

A column of classical instrument emitting a chaotic and unexpected sound, two popular games –Chinese Checkers and Pool- viewed from the eyes of a “competitive” foreigner, my obsession in understanding the Chinese Art Market, the similarities and differences between Cuba and China’s socialisms and cultures, are, among others, some of the themes you will be able to find in this show.
