s we wrap up our last issue for 2023, I find myself at a loss for meaningful words.

I certainly could spend time letting you know that we just finished our third year in business. I guess I could share with you some impressive statistics from a recent readership audit.

76 percent of our readers make $100K or more

86 percent have four year college degrees or higher

84 percent are C-Suite, business owners and decision makers

The audit says we have 29,605 readers per issue.

I am happy with these results, and believe that our laser focus on business is paying off for both our readers and our advertisers. Our staff works diligently to provide

curated business stories that you usually won’t find anywhere else.

But this time of year always makes me more contemplative and as I walked around my neighborhood today, and listened to a Christmas playlist, I was reminded of what’s most important.

An old song called, “Grownup Christmas List” came on and the words captured the sentiment I was feeling. Here’s some meter from the chorus: “So here’s my lifelong wish My grown up Christmas list Not for myself but for a world in need No more lives torn apart That wars would never start And time would heal all hearts And everyone would have a friend And right would always win And love would never end, no This is my grown up Christmas list”

Full circle, that grown up Christmas list is possible and will one day be a reality because of part of the song’s namesake. Christmas bears the name of a baby, born this day in the city of David which is Christ the Lord. God became flesh to bear the weight of our problems and shortcomings. He has provided us all with the gift of forgiveness and hope.

That gift changes everything. It’s on my list this year, and I hope it will be on yours, too.

Mystical, magical New Year’s Eve BRING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A MAGICAL NIGHT CIRCUS, RETURNING TO DOWNTOWN FAYETTEVILLE IN 2023

R

eturning for its third year, Cool Spring Downtown District’s New Year’s Eve Spectacular: The Night Circus keeps up the high energy with big name headliners, roaming circus performers, vendors, games, fireworks and more. Based on Erin Morganstern’s “The Night Circus,” this New Year’s Eve celebration is unlike any other.

It is a wonderful event that is conveniently located in Festival Park from 7 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.

“The concept [is] loosely based on that book which had the circus that comes into a town, engages the townsfolk in all these magical adventures and when they wake up in the morning they’re gone. I like the idea of that ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ sort of moment, especially as we were coming out of the pandemic, that was a large sentiment at the time,” said Director of Special Projects for Cool Spring Downtown District Ashanti Bennett.

The Night Circus will maintain its whimsical theme with roaming circus performers, fire dancers, stilt-walkers and magicians to add to the ambience of the event. Local talent will provide supporting opening acts onstage before the much-anticipated headliners, DJ Spinderella, of Grammy-award winning Salt-N-Pepa and Billboard Music chart topping band Dru Hill featuring Sisqó bringing the new year in with a party!

“What I like about our event is you get some of that big city pizzazz most folks travel for, but it’s literally right here in our own Festival Park,” said Bennett. “You get to see the caliber of performances we’ve been able to bring to the stage like in the past like Coolio, Tony! Toni!

Toné! this year with Spinderella and Dru Hill and it’s free. I think that’s a wonderful thing to not have to travel elsewhere and possibly pay more to actually see that.”

Local food trucks will be available for festive food and a beer and wine garden hosted by Healy Wholesale and a cigar bar provided by the Livery Cigar Emporium will be available for guests. There will also be the rising of the LED star at midnight with fireworks, as well as a sensory-friendly children’s countdown at 9 p.m.

also participate in ringing in the new year before bedtime and before mom and dad embarrass them with all their embarrassing 90s dance moves when Dru Hill gets on stage,” shared Bennett. “It feels like a community event with warmth that emanates from it, but it also radiates as high a caliber of an event as you would expect to see somewhere else in the Triad or the Triangle Area.”

With free admission into the event itself, the Night Circus truly is a one of a kind event that is sure to dazzle guests from all over.

The Night Circus just keeps getting better and better with every year and the numbers don’t lie.

“We anticipate an increased attendance; each year it has gone up little bit by little bit. Last year we had anywhere between about 12,000-15,000 people attend and I am hopeful we will see a significant increase in number from last year,” said Bennett.

The Night Circus once again promises to deliver an unforgettable night of celebration for all in a unique way not seen very often. The embracing of the theming of a magical circus synergizing with such big headliners in your own downtown brings a truly unique experience to Fayetteville.

“Across the nation for all sorts of celebrations, folks are dropping something down at midnight and we choose to elevate and raise up a star, an 18 foot multicolored LED star into the sky and I think it’s just significant of the branding we had,” said Bennett. “But even before that, that notion of America’s Can-Do City, we don’t want to drop something, we want to raise the vibration a little bit when it comes to midnight and transitioning and looking forward. It absolutely makes us very happy to see that little guy go up in the sky,” shared Bennett. “I hope we see you all at the circus!”

Taking up residence on a plot that used to be home to a mechanic shop, Co-Owner Jordan Sherrod shared that the concept had been in the works since spring of 2020.

“I’ve always been amazed that we don’t have a really good patio space in this town, the weather’s nice pretty much all year round.

When this [building] came open for purchase, it just made a lot of sense.

Haymount is a nice area where you can easily walk to, so the lot really lended itself to a good patio area where people can come and congregate and have a good time. That was really the motivation and we have a lot of really good food trucks and I just don't think everyone knows that, so this gives an opportunity for us to showcase what others are doing,” shared Sherrod.

The first Food Truck specific business in Fayetteville, the Haymount Truck Stop team had to work with local lawmakers to make operating a business model of this type legal within city limits.

“Food trucks were not allowed to be a primary use case for a business, they could only be a secondary use meaning you could have any kind of business, but then you could get food trucks to come for a time period. There are restrictions on how close they could be to buildings and how many could be on the lot.

We wanted it to be a primary use so we worked with the City and over about a six to eight month period, we were able to push through an ordinance through the City for the food truck courts to be a legal entity,” said Sherrod.

The layout of the front patio is structured to accommodate four food trucks at a time. To keep options fresh for guests, the Truck Stop operates on a rotating schedule.

According to Operations Manager Doug Ray, food truck owners are expressing interest from as far away as the Raleigh and Durham areas.

“From here to the Triangle, the word is out and food trucks are kind of falling out of the sky. I spend the majority of my time daily now, talking to food truck owners in emails, phone calls, in person meetings and touring the facility. So far, the reception in the food truck community has been amazing. The food trucks bring incredible value to the Haymount Truck Stop,” shared Ray. Now, the Truck Stop is looking to incorporate more structure to their schedule by scheduling their first “permanent” food truck residents.

“Permanent” residents are able to set up shop for a longer amount of time and will operate on a monthly rotation schedule.

Ray shared that their first permanent resident, the Fry Papi food truck, will be on location for the full month of March in 2024.

“There's so many great stories. We have school trained chefs, we have entrepreneurs that somebody told them their food was amazing so they got started… We’re really keen on rotating and trying to keep the lot as fresh as our bar menu is. You're not going to come to the truck stop and see two trucks with the same menu at the same time,” shared Ray. “I'm really enjoying meeting and talking to new food trucks and they tell two friends and I get two more applications. This early on, it's a really good problem to have.”

Along with providing a reliable space for food trucks to set up, the Haymount Truck stop provides a comfortable environment for guests to settle down. The Truck

Stop provides plenty of seating for guests along with a 22 tap bar which specializes in various cocktails along with offering the option to purchase non alcoholic drinks. Currently, the menu includes traditional cocktails like a classic Old Fashioned, Cosmopolitan and a Bee’s Knees along with unique creations all cultivated by Bar Manager Maurice Spagatner.

Other features in the Haymount Truck Stop include a back patio space and an arcade lounge which will be available to rent for events.

After more than a month being open and meeting the community, the Haymount Truck Stop will be bringing in the New Year by hosting its very first event: A New Years Soirée with Haymount Truck Stop.

Sponsored by Southern Glazier Wine and Spirits, the event will be an opportunity for the community to dress to impress and enjoy champagne, a new elevated cocktail menu, hors d’oeuvres and fantastic company.

“We wanted to give people an op-

tion to get dressed up and not have to drive to Raleigh and get hotels and to actually have something here locally. It gives us time to expand our cocktail menu for that party.

The cocktail menu will completely change for New Year so people that are coming to that party will have first dibs,” shared Events Manager Annie Galyon.

The event will go from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 31 and also feature catering from Haymount Food truck regular GR Fil-Am Grill.

Tickets are $100 and include champagne at the door, a champagne toast at midnight, an in house cocktail and hors d’oeuvres throughout the night.

“We want to get people excited to get dressed up and go somewhere that's actually cute and fun and will have a fun crowd. We're going to try to have sparklers and we're gonna have it set for pictures and it's private which is kind of nice, so it's not overwhelming because anyone that has been on site since we've opened, especially on the weekends, knows it can get a little packed, so we're capping it at 80 people,’ continued Galyon.

FSU Professor awarded $10,000 from Council of Social Work Education DR. ERICA CAMPBELL PH.D, associate professor of social work at Fayetteville State University, was awarded $10,000 from the Council of Social Work Education’s Kendall Institute to integrate simulation-based education into preparing students to assess food insecurity with community assessment models within the classroom.

Campbell will lead a course to increase students’ knowledge of food insecurity in different settings, and guide them through interactive simulations and real-world scenarios related to community assessments and food insecurity.

The grant will allow students to explore complex scenarios and develop critical thinking, problem-solving and assessment skills to address food insecurity in local and global settings. Food insecurity is in-

fluenced by a range of interconnected factors including poverty, access to markets or agricultural infrastructure in the region.

Campbell “There is a need to prepare social work students to understand the complexities of food insecurity locally and globally,” said Campbell in a press release. “Equipping students with the skills and knowledge to effectively assess food insecurity in local and global communities is key to identifying solutions to address food insecurity in our communities.”

Mario Benavente elected as 2024 vice president for APAMO Constituency Group Fayetteville City Council Member MARIO BENAVENTE has been elected as the 2024 Vice President for the National League of Cities Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials Constituency Group for 2024.

Benavente will serve a two year term and is the only representative from North Carolina.

The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States.

Benavente Its mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance.

Working in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues, the National League of Cities serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents. More than 1,700 municipalities of all sizes pay dues to NLC and actively participate as leaders and voting members in the organization.

Established within NLC in 1985, Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials (APAMO) is a caucus within NLC that provides municipal officials who identify and ally with the Asian Pacific American to connect with their colleagues in a forum to share ideas and develop leadership experience. Brewing positive change LOCAL COFFEE SHOP FURTHERS MISSION OF NONPROFIT DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

J

ust 10 months ago, Kim and Karl Molnar opened Miller’s Brew Coffee Shop, a brick and mortar training center for adults with special needs. Since then the community has been abuzz over the new business and not just from the coffee.

“We opened in February and we have been full steam ahead since the doors opened. Things have gone very, very well and we're really excited about our one year anniversary coming up as well as what the second year will bring,” shared Kim. Miller’s Brew, located at 1401 Morganton Road, is the third phase of the nonprofit organization Miller’s Crew which was started in 2016 by Kim and her husband, Karl. Each phase helps to further the organization’s mission to provide vocational training to adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities in the Fayetteville area.

Continuing to provide new and seasoned crew members with opportunities to meet their growth needs keeps Kim and Karl on their toes.

Interest in the program is high and it’s a fine line to balance a high level of interest in the program while also maintaining the level of dedication and personalized relationships that accompany the recruitment of each new team member.

“We’re a very transparent organization [in] that our mission and vision are clear to anybody who comes in the shop and watches and sees what we do. As a result of that, more and more intakes are occurring, so if we want to keep on the path of fulfilling that need that we set out to do, we are going to have to create some more opportunities,” remarked Kim. Kim shared that they will be bringing back their food truck, a component of phase two, and setting up at the new Haymount Truck Stop for lunch on specific days. This will open up more spots for crew members to train.

Those that are curious about joining the program or encouraging a loved one to join the program can stop by the shop to ask questions or pick up some of the literature in the store that contains details about the program and its history. The actual application process can be done on

the company’s website millerscrew. com. By selecting the “Crew Training” tab the individual will be taken to an intake informational form to fill out.

The next step is for Miller’s Brew to contact the family and schedule an intake in which the Miller’s Crew team meet face to face with the applicant and their family. Depending on the number of applicants the company receives at a given time, there may be a wait period between the initial submission and the organization of this face to face meeting.

“Once we go over a training agreement and the training agreement is completed, the timeline will determine their training program time slot. And once that time slot starts, it’s a six week initial program and then there’s a phase two of training and then a phase three in which they decide what employable track they want to go on. They can stay with the coffee shop, they can go through an employable pathway that is not with the coffee shop but with a community business partner that we

work with and we'll try to get them a job or if they need more training, then they stay with us and they get more intensive training with the program,” explained Kim. Some of these community business partners include Jersey Mike’s and Duck Donuts Owner Eric Nelson.

However, Kim emphasized that the intention here is not to necessarily refer trainees to an already established connection, but to assist them in gaining the skills they need to then move up to whatever role or company they are passionate about working for. Part of their task as trainers is to set up that pathway for the crew member to achieve their vocational goals.

In order for Miller’s Brew to best serve trainees it is important that the families of the crew members be all in for their loved ones success and growth.

“We are very, very hyper focused on that family component. Because our motto and the way we believe we run our program is it’s not just us that’s going to help these crew members be successful, it’s also their

family circle,” shared Kim. It’s not just the crew members who are growing. Community members who come into the shop and purchase a coffee or a donut are becoming more comfortable interacting with people with special abilities and this bridge towards a more understanding community is critical.

These positive results achieved by both the individual crew members and the organization as a whole are made possible by hard work on all sides of the equation. Long days of working with dozens of customers and crew members require patience and dedication, but Kim couldn’t be more fulfilled in the work that she is doing. “...It’s tiresome, but there’s nothing more rewarding…you asked me what it meant to me, it means everything.” shared Kim. As the business continues to grow, so does its menu. Kim shared that each month they’re adding new items and they also sell bags of coffee beans in store for customers who want to make Miller’s Brew at home.

The coffee shop operates Tuesday-Saturday with weekday hours being 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday hours being 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

T

he newest addition to the unique, soldier focused industries found throughout the Fayetteville- Fort Liberty market, Soldier Fuel Performance Nutrition was created by business partners Christian D’Andrea and Aleco Bravo-Greenberg in their search to produce healthier, high-performing nutritional supplements for the military. D’andrea and Bravo-Greenberg are originally filmmakers who specialize in documentaries about the military which stoked their passion for the area.

“Every documentary we make, every project we engage in, you eventually come through [Fort Liberty], right? At some point, you cycle through Fayetteville,” D’Andrea said.

“We’ve had people say, ‘Hey, Fayetteville is the center of the universe.’”

The duo initially partnered with the U.S. Army in research and development to conceive the Soldier Fuel Energy Bar. Since then, the team has continued their mission and released their Heavy Caliber™ coffee and their newest product, the Soldier Fuel Energy Drink, which debuted at the AUSA Warfighter Summit and Exposition in Fayetteville in July 2023.

“Soldier Fuel is a great energy drink that’s part of a suite of products that we make and will make because we’re passionate about military nutrition that empowers, enables, helps and heals war fighters,” shared D’Andrea.

The launch of the Soldier Fuel Energy Drink at the Warfighter Summit established Fayetteville as a significant aspect of Soldier Fuel’s identity moving forward.

“If you’ve got a brand called Soldier Fuel, you launch it in one of the world's great hubs for soldiers and that's Fayetteville,” D’Andrea said.

The duo came into contact with Robert Patton Jr., Executive Vice President of the Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Group, who facilitated their growth within the community. Soldier Fuel partnered with the distributor Healy Wholesale, which services Fayetteville and multiple surrounding counties.

“Simultaneously in Fayetteville, we have the base – what's going into the base, the installation – and the environs and those two things complement each other,” D’Andrea said.

Regarding the nutritional benefits of Soldier Fuel Energy Drink, one 12-ounce can contains 200 percent of the daily value of four key B vitamins, including B5. D’Andrea shared about the importance of B5 as a means of synthesizing coenzyme A, which assists the body in processing carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Additionally, 15 percent of Soldier Fuel’s profits go to military-associated charities, such as the United Service Organizations and Army Emergency Relief. They have also launched an anti-suicide charity called Survivor Cadres. Another area in which Soldier Fuel backs charitable causes is the financial, technical and nutritional support of Veterans embarking on walks and runs of long distances to raise awareness for military issues.

This is known as their Ground Fuel Team. D'Andrea and Bravo-Greenberg themselves are known to show up in many of these settings.

“We love it because we love what we’re doing,” Bravo-Greenberg said.

“We love what the brand is doing and we love the brand. So, we want to interact with people one-on-one.”

They are also developing a sister product called Go-Pills, a cognitive enhancement derived from plants.

Bravo-Greenberg describes these as “tactical supplements,” which are under the Military Nootropics group of products. Other elements in the Military Nootropics line will be designed to aid in neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt and heal itself.

“We never make claims about miracle cures and we don’t believe that an energy drink or a pill will solve all of your problems,” D’Andrea said.

“But we also believe that supplements can be extraordinarily beneficial as a supplement, as a complement to other things and you might as well use those.” He emphasized the importance of exercising the brain in other areas, such as math and literature, as well as participating in engaging conversations with others.

“One of the things we hope is that Fayetteville looks at Soldier Fuel as, to a certain extent, its own,” D’Andrea said, continuing to highlight their passion for the Fayetteville area as a hub for Soldier Fuel’s launch.

The Fayetteville location is owned and operated by Genny and Chad Furne. Genny just retired from the military in July of this year and Chad is still on active duty. As she transitioned out of the military, Genny began to brainstorm what her next chapter would look like.

With a masters degree in entrepreneurship and a dream to own her own business, Genny considered opportunities that would allow her to put her entrepreneurial skills to work while also providing a service that she was passionate about to the community. Having served in the military for 26 years, Genny disclosed that she had utilized physical therapy services at various times in her life and was very grateful to the doctors that had helped her when she needed it.

“My biggest excitement is to be able to provide to the community the same services I once received that helped me feel so much better

about my health,” remarked Genny.

After looking into a number of franchise opportunities, Genny and her husband decided that FYZICAL was a great match for their goals.

“What I love about it is they give you the name, they give you tools, they give you all that, but it’s still your store,” shared Genny.

$2.8 billion and counting NORTH CAROLINA'S SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS FUNDING GRANTED THROUGHOUT CUMBERLAND, HOKE AND SAMPSON COUNTIES

T

he Small Business Administration of North Carolina has been stimulating the state's economy one loan at a time. Between 2021-2023 the SBA distributed nearly $3 billion in loans to small businesses within the state.

SBA District Director Mike Arriola provided more insight on the way the administration has been able to create this reality in NC. Arriola has been working in the NC district of the SBA for 19 years and when asked, shared how he viewed the success of this time versus previous years. Arriola said NC is certainly in a “peak time” with three years of progress including:

2021 the SBA awarded $1.1 billion in loans

2022 $870 million worth of loans were given

2023 the SBA loaned $963 million within the state

Cumberland, Hoke and Sampson Counties have received a combined total of $41 million in the last two years from the SBA. In 2022 a combined total of 21 small business loans were given in Cumberland and Hoke Counties in the amount of $16 million.

Cumberland, Sampson and Hoke County have continued benefiting from the SBA’s programs.

In 2023, the SBA awarded 33 loans totalling $25 million in Cumberland and Sampson County, with Cumberland County being granted 29 loans and Sampson County receiving four.

The SBA partners with banks across the state to help distribute loans. Pembroke’s own Lumbee Guaranty Bank is one of the lenders the SBA has partnered with in their loan distribution efforts.

The most common loans distributed by the SBA include the 7(a) loans and 504 loans.

The 7(a) loan grants up to $5 million to small businesses and can be used to purchase, update or refinance

real estate and buildings. The grant also assists people with changing levels of ownership, handling capital, acquiring and installing equipment and furniture.

IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A 7(A) LOAN BUSINESSES MUST: Be a for-profit U.S. based operating business Be considered a small business under SBA standards Be unable to qualify for loans under non governmental avenues Businesses must also demonstrate the ability to repay the loan received from the SBA. Another commonly utilized finance tool is the 504 loan. 504 loans can be used to purchase land, build buildings, update construction, buy long-term machinery, improve land, streets, parking lots and landscaping.

Most small businesses will be able to obtain up to $5.5 million from the SBA through a 504 loan, however, energy based small businesses can receive up to $5.5 million for up to three projects not exceeding $16.5 million in loan amounts.

BUSINESSES ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A 504 LOAN MUST: Be operating for profit Based in the U.S. or its possession Have a net worth under $15 million Have an average net income under $5 million post federal income taxes in the two years before submitting the loan application The business must meet the SBA size requirements, have qualified management expertise, be able to present a logical business plan and demonstrate the ability to repay the loan.

Businesses that receive a 504 loan must not be engaged in non-profit, passive or speculative activities.

Arriolla also added that there are a few gems within the SBA that he feels are under utilized; including microloans and the community advantage programs.

The microloan program allows small business owners to receive a loan for up to $50,000.

The microloan can be used for machinery, equipment, furniture, supplies and working capital. However, it cannot be used to clear current debts or buy real estate.

He also added the community advantage program as an underutilized resource. The community advantage program was created so that small businesses located in underserved communities could receive loans. In the community advantage program, companies identified as mission based lenders, partner with local companies to provide loans.

Arriola recommended using the following lenders in our state: Mountain BizWorks, Carolina Community Impact and Carolina Business Capital. Mountain Bizworks and Carolina Community Impact are mission based lenders that offer community advantage and microloans to businesses in NC. Carolina Business Capital offers 7(a) and 504 loans.

Time for Your Business to Save with Time-of-Use Rates

Winter Peak Hours (November - March) For PWC Electric Customers

As a small business, you can save money on your energy bills with PWC’s Time-of-Use billing. Power used during Peak Hours is billed at higher rates (just four hours a day), and power used during Off-Peak Hours is billed at 29% lower rates. During the winter schedule – from November 1 through March 31 – Peak Hours are weekdays from 6:00 am – 10:00 am.

Some things you can do to shift your usage and conserve power during Peak Hours: •

Use a programmable “smart” thermostat to keep your heat at the lowest comfortable temperature during Peak Hours and avoid allowing employees to adjust thermostats. Consider setting the schedule to preheat your building(s) during Off-Peak Hours (before 6:00 am), then lower the heat from 6:00 – 10:00 in the morning.

•

Schedule non-essential equipment to run during Off-Peak Hours. When possible, schedule required equipment to run sequentially (not concurrently) during Peak Hours.

•

Educate your employees on Time-of-Use, encouraging them turn off lighting and equipment they don’t need during Peak Hours and perform non-urgent, high energy-use tasks after 10:00 am.

•

The Whole Business (Super Off-Peak) Rate will not be affected by the change to Winter TOU.
