BY RYAN KLIMCAK Ronnie Guiles has been coaching and teaching 8th grade and high school history in the San Diego area for over 30 years. This summer, he traveled back to Bismarck, for his second season as an assistant coach for the Larks.

Although Ronnie enjoys coaching baseball and basketball, his love for teaching history and social studies trumps all. He puts the same amount of energy into teaching as he does coaching.

“I’m really more of a teacher than a coach. The coaching is the icing on the cake,” Guiles said. “I teach the exact same way I coach — I approach both with the same energy. I try to keep it fun and laid back but when it’s time to focus, I’m lecturing and we are learning. We mean business.”

With his teaching background, Guiles brings a unique style to the Larks coaching staff. Ronnie equates his coaching style to the junior college and high school level. He says this is a big reason he is able to relate to the young Larks players.

“I’ve been around many great coaches and I developed my own unique style. You mimic the people who coached you and who you have coached with and of course learn from the legends and famous coaches.”

One of the great coaches Guiles had the pleasure to work with is Larks field manager Will Flynt. Guiles and Flynt have been friends since their childhood. They both attended San Pasqual High School in San Diego.

Flynt was a successful pitcher, while Guiles enjoyed playing both baseball and basketball.

“Will [Flynt] was actually on my boys club basketball team before high school when we were about 10-12,” Guiles said. “I was the star point guard running up and down getting the ball all the time and he was the big guy not getting the ball.”

As Flynt’s right hand man, Ronnie believes that his unique coaching style and the energy he brings to the table, instills confidence in his players.

“My goal is to bring a lot of confidence,” Guiles said. “I know I bring energy, but I want that to translate into more confidence and better performance from the team.”

BY ISAAC BUGARIN Drew Beazley can do it all. The two-way player is both a pitcher and infielder of the Larks roster. He’s what some call the Swiss Army Knife of baseball.

“Being able to help the team in anyway I can is nice,” Beazley said. “If I’m on the mound, I want to throw strikes and pound the zone and when I’m to bat I look for pitches to hit.”

Originally from Johnston, Iowa, Beazley made his way to Bismarck as a redshirt sophomore out of South Dakota State University.

At SDSU, Beazley pitched in 28.1 innings and posted an ERA of 2.54. At the plate, Beazley batted .204 in 137 at-bats.

HOMETOWN JOHNSTON, IOWA

2019 marked Beazley’s best season offensively for the Jackrabbits. He batted .275 with 11 doubles, four homers, and slugged at a clip of .443. That same season, Beazley compiled an on-base percentage of .420.

“I’m a two-way guy that loves to compete and I love to play the game,” Beazley said. “I heard a lot of positive things about the Larks and Bismarck so I was excited to get here.”

At this level, being a two-way player is challenging. Twice the amount of time and practice goes into playing two positions rather than one.

“It’s tough to be a two-way player in a D1 program, but I’m glad I get to work with him,” field manager Will Flynt said. “[Drew] Beazley’s been both my first baseman and designated hitter. His pitching on the road has been big for us too because we can only take 30 guys to away games.”

Beazley’s talent has shown on both sides of the ball this season. He currently has a .263 average, 20 hits (including 2 HRs), 14 walks and 6 RBIs at the plate — and has a 3.44 ERA in 18.1 IP with 18 strikeouts — in 22 games so far (as of June 30).

WOLFF

Libby Wolff, who celebrated her seventh birthday on May 22, has already overcome tremendous obstacles in her life.

Libby was born with Schizencephaly, a rare brain abnormality which manifests differently in every person.

For Libby, it means severe cerebral palsy, epilepsy, non-verbal communication, chronic respiratory issues, among other things.

“She is amazing, and we can’t imagine our world without her. She’s definitely made us do things, think things that we would never have found an avenue to do,” says Kari Wolff, Libby’s mom.

One of these avenues is an alternative form of communication called Trailblazing Communications which uses Libby’s energy and a computer-based program to communicate what Libby wants or needs. This can range anywhere from her diet to her wanting to dance.

“She has a desire to share her knowledge and inspiration with quotes and different things, so she shares different messages with the world. We put them on her Facebook page, The Diary of Miss Libby,” explains Kari.

The Diary of Miss Libby follows the life of Libby, sharing milestones, stories, and some of Libby’s wisdom, such as “I do hard things so I can do great things.”

Libby has many hobbies. While dancing may be Libby’s favorite, Libby’s older sister Layken says that snuggling with her might be her favorite thing to do. Libby also enjoys going for walks, although as her mom joked, it has to be a Libby Day which is not too windy, not too hot, and not too cold.

Libby also is a talented artist, another thing featured on her Facebook page. Above all, Libby loves people and has many friends and admirers who are all encouraged by her motivation and positivity.

How to make a perfect hamburger patty

For charcoal grilling, when coals are medium ash-covered (approximately 30 minutes), spread in a single layer and check cooking temperature. Position cooking grid. To check temperature, cautiously hold the palm of your hand above the coals at cooking height. Count the number of seconds you can hold your hand in that position before the heat forces you to pull it away; approximately 4 seconds for medium heat.

For gas grilling, brands vary greatly and grilling times may need to be adjusted. Consult owner’s manual for specific grilling information.

Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness. If food is grilled over too high heat, the exterior can become overcooked or charred before the interior reaches the desired doneness. Charring is not recommended.

WHEN IS THE HOME RUN DERBY?

The Home Run Derby starts 1 hour prior to every Saturday game. Fans who have a ticket to the game can come early and enjoy the show.

HOW IT WORKS.

The derby point system works on a 3-point scale. If the ball falls in the shallow outfield, the player receives one point. If the ball falls on the warning track, they receive two points.

Any ball hit over the fence earns the player three points.

It was very exciting because the camaraderie between the girls is great. It is so much fun to be able to perform in front of a crowd that size at each game.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FANS?

My advice for the fans would be to root for the Larks and support the amount of hard work that is put into each game. I enjoy my time at the game and try my best to cheer them on.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING AT TOUCHMARK?

My favorite part would be the swimming pool because it has a good amount of space for me to swim. I go there about three times a week and always have a great experience.

WHAT IS ONE FACT THAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I am a Christian and I love my faith and the people that I am surrounded with everyday.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A LARKETTE?

A LEGEND IN THE MAKING...

MR. LARK

WYATT ULRICH Wyatt Ulrich, Mr. Lark, the all-time Northwoods League runs scored leader — we know him by many names but one more can be added to the collection: Hall of Famer.

Ulrich’s numbers in Bismarck speak for themselves: 202 games played, 169 runs scored (NWL record), 215 hits, 89 RBIs, .294 batting average, and an .399 on-base percentage.

“No one represents the Larks and what we strive for on the field better than Mr. Lark,” Larks Chief Experience Office John Bollinger said.

His first three seasons in Bismarck were thanks to a string of 10-day contracts signed by Ulrich. Despite not signing a full-season contract till his fourth season, Ulrich played in 176 of the Larks first 216 games.

During the Larks off-season, Ulrich spent four years at St. John’s University before transferring to play Division I baseball at the University of Richmond. In his final year, he batted .344, with 32 hits & 15 RBI’s in 24 games.

After his career as a Lark ended, Ulrich signed to play professional baseball with the Sioux Falls Canaries, an independent team in the American Association. Through 26 games, Wyatt is hitting .387 with 41 hits, 6 stolen bases and 14 walks.

The Larks and Scheels are honoring Wyatt Ulrich this summer by retiring his jersey, creating a bobblehead in his image and inducting him as the first member of the Larks Hall of Fame.

Wyatt’s bobblehead features him standing in the left handed batters box with his memorable slap hit approach, a white Larks jersey, a black super hero cape as well as the name “Mr. Lark” engraved on the bottom ring.

“This is so cool, I can retire now. I got my own bobblehead. I’m going to call it,” Ulrich said. “That’s awesome, the Larks are awesome.”

Nicknamed “Mr. Lark,” Wyatt will be remembered for his stellar play and work ethic.

“We’re family here. It means a lot,” Ulrich said. “Bismarck is my second home. I was there for four years and I love it so much.”

FOR CANDIED BACON 1 LB Package Cloverdale Bacon 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar 1 quart Vanilla Ice Cream Fresh Strawberries Chocolate Syrup (optional) Chocolate Chips for Topping (optional) Sprinkles for Topping (optional)

Sweet N’ Savory INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 425F, sprinkle brown sugar on slices of bacon.

Cook candied bacon for 20-25 minutes or until caramelized and edges are a dark brown.

Wash Fresh strawberries under water, trim and slice.

EVERYONE SHE MEETS Harleigh Long isn’t letting a rare chromosomal disorder slow her down.

Diagnosed with 14q13q21 deletion or 14q interstitial deletion syndrome, some of the challenges Harleigh faces are problems with walking, low muscle tone, flexible joints, motor delay and an underactive thyroid gland.

Despite these challenges, Harleigh works hard at therapy twice a week and has learned to walk independently using a walker. Her determination and motivation inspire everyone she meets.

Harleigh enjoys being outside camping, swimming and taking golf cart rides, along with spending time with her family and friends. STRYKER GIVES 110% All-Star Stryker Quellhorst is a boisterous, spunky 3-year-old who doesn’t let a rare disease stop him from living life to the fullest. Like a true MVP, he has hit every challenge out of the park.

When Stryker was only a few months old, his parents noticed his inability to hold his head up or see properly. He began therapy and early interventions, but his family still felt like something wasn’t right.

Finally, it felt like a win when the family discovered Stryker needed glasses at 6 months old. The moment that first pair was placed over his eyes, something magnificent sparked in him. It was the first time he willingly held his head up, and his therapy sessions became much more productive.

Yet, Stryker was behind developmentally. Multiple tests over months were unable to identify any causes of concern, despite his mobility and vision challenges. Answers did not come until after Stryker was 1 year old. Genetic testing revealed he has spinocerebellar ataxia type 29 (SCA29), a condition where the parts of the brain that control balance and coordination are completely shut off.

Every day, Stryker fights against his own body to walk, talk, sit, eat and function. But with the support of a posture walker, his care team and family, he is walking and speaking like a champ. Now, Stryker keeps his family on their toes with his love of telling stories, learning and playing sports with his sister and brother.

SPLASH INTO SUMMER

FUN IN

THE SUN

With temperatures hitting triple digits, the Larks hosted their first ever Splash Into Summer Event at Moritz Sport and Marine. The event took place on Saturday, June 5 and brought in over 150 Larks fans!

Fans had the opportunity to explore the store,and learn about water safety.

When the doors opened, fans flocked in to see the infamous River the Rat. River, a guest at the ballpark this season, was decked out in his summer swag. With his blue Hawaiian shirt and orange floaties, River assisted fans as they traveled around Moritz Sport & Marine completing fun summer activities in exchange for a limited edition blue Larks life jacket!

Once the event was underway, fans were able to build their own summer sun visor. Fans decorated the visors with fish and underwater creatures.

Before traveling over to see the YMCA Aquatic Center booth. Fans learned how to stay safe while relaxing in the summer sun from the YMCA Aquatic team.

Metro Area Ambulance was on site to show how to give chest compressions in case a water emergency may occur.

Professional fishermen showcased how to tie a fishing knot. Fans were able to test these skills at the wall fishing station, where a line was cast in hopes of obtaining a prize. After feeling a tug on their line, every fisherman pulled the rod over the wall and revealed some yummy goldfish and Swedish fish.

After a hard day’s work, fans were able to relax outdoors, learn more about the aquatic ecosystem and how to properly clean, drain and dry a boat.
