2023 BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE BOLLINGER FLOCK LARKS NATION, On behalf of our entire organization, I can’t thank you enough for making Season 6 a special summer.

Whether the Larks win or lose, you help our team turn Dakota Community Bank and Trust Field into a FUN factory creating thousands of smiles, laughs, and memories for families and friends.

With your continued energy and support, we’ve been able to accomplish some incredible feats over the past six years including selling out over 80% of our home games (top in the Northwoods League), receiving national attention in news and on social media for our entertainment and promotions, raising close to $300,000 for local charities, and creating FUN that’s made a real difference in people’s lives.

But let’s not stop there. We’re only six seasons into this adventure and there is so much more FUN in store.

Because of your support, the Larks are thrilled to announce two exciting ventures for the 2023 season:

NEW RIVAL TEAM IN MINOT, ND. This summer, our local ownership team secured a lease at Corbett Field with Minot Parks and Recreation and will be starting a second Northwoods League team in North Dakota in 2023. The team will have a naming contest this fall in Minot. Fans will have the opportunity to watch this new rivalry unfold at historic Corbett Field and Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. Each team will host four games on their home field.

2023 NORTHWOODS LEAGUE ALL STAR GAME IN BISMARCK. The Northwoods League has seen the Larks record attendance and has decided to host All Star weekend in Bismarck. This game will feature the best players from the Great Plains Division competing in a Home Run Derby and All Star Game in mid July.

As you know, the ONLY way to guarantee the best seats to the best games is by joining the Flock and becoming a Larks Family or Corporate Flock Member. Flock Memberships are also the ONLY way to guarantee tickets to Bismarck vs. Minot rivalry games next year and receive the first opportunity to purchase tickets to the 2023 All Star Game.

Garrett Macias has seen many different cultures all over the world, yet no matter where he is, his love for the game remains the same.

Garrett comes to Bismarck a native of Riverside, California after completing his Redshirt Junior year with California State University, San Bernardino. Although he considers himself a "Cali kid," Macias is grateful for his time spent across the Pacific Ocean.

After growing up in California, Garrett and his family moved to a small city outside of Hiroshima, Japan called Iwakuni. Garrett spent six years, from 7th to 12th grade, experiencing a whole new culture.

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA

“The experience of living in Japan was rewarding,” Garrett said. “I loved the culture and the people always made me feel welcome. The ability to travel all across Asia was a true blessing.”

After graduating high school, Garrett made the choice to return to his native state to play collegiate baseball. In 2022, Garrett had a fantastic season for CSU San Bernardino. He hit for an impressive .310 batting average while driving in 25 runs and sent six balls over the fence.

Now over 1,500 miles away, Garrett is works to improve his game this summer with the Larks.

Garrett is one of five players on the Larks from CSU San Bernardino. Shortstop AJ Barraza, first baseman Daryl Ruiz, pitcher Luke Hempel, and pitcher Chris Hernandez all made the 23-hour long car ride with Garrett to Bismarck.

“Having my teammates from college here with me has made this summer ball adventure even more fun,” Garrett said. “These guys are like family and after spending so much time during the season together it's cool that we can all travel to another state to play the game we love.”

As of July 15, Garrett so far this summer has driven in 12 RBIs on 23 hits and has launched three balls out of the park, including a grand slam in just his second game as a Lark.

Originally, for the Larks inaugural season we had corporate season tickets. The Larks asked us, 'Would you like to be a host family?'

Mark didn't think I would want to do it, but when he asked me I said, 'Why not!'

We tried it and loved it. Now we've been a host family for the past five seasons.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A HOST FAMILY?

Getting to know the guys, they’re all cool young men. All of our kids are grown up and it’s really nice to have someone in the house and have people to cook for. The players also stay in touch after the season. One of the players from years ago still wishes me a Happy Mother's Day every year.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WITH THE PLAYERS WHEN THEY'RE IN TOWN?

It depends on the player, some are quiet and others join us every night to watch TV. Mark loves to take the boys out fishing and spend guy time together, chilling on the boat.

WHAT IMPACT HAS HOSTING PLAYERS HAD ON YOU TWO?

In the past I wasn’t really into sports, other than going to our son's sporting events. Mark was a big sports fan though. After becoming a host family we have bonded over the Larks thanks to the connection we have with the players and the team.

WHAT IS A FUN FACT THAT WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? I love to play games. I play almost every kind of card game, but my favorite game to play is Mexican Train with the dominos. I’m still settling in here at Touchmark and I love to play games with the other ladies to get to know everyone.

FINDING JOY THROUGH IT ALL

Chevelle Jochim was born prematurely at just 33 weeks. She had several complications, including clubfoot, cleft palate, low muscle tone and joint contractures. As she got older, she also developed scoliosis. With time and further testing, doctors discovered that Chevelle was born with a TPM2 gene variant. The genetic mutation attributed to her symptoms.

Chevelle has had over a dozen surgeries, treatments and ongoing therapies.

She and her family received support from a variety of institutions – all of which have helped Chevelle grow and succeed. With the aid of her reverse walker and wheelchair, Chevelle has gained not only mobility but also an amazing level of independence.

With that independence, Chevelle finds joy every day. She loves being active by riding her tricycle, being outdoors and “helping” on her family’s farm and ranch. She also enjoys art, swimming and anything with owls.

Chevelle is an amazing, bright and determined little girl who loves to keep her family on their toes!

BISMARCK WIZARDS

BASKETBALL TEAM

THE LARKS AND BRAVERA HAVE JOINED FORCES TO RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING TEAMS THROUGHOUT NORTH DAKOTA THROUGH THE TEAM OF THE MONTH PROGRAM. SELECTION IS BASED ON TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP, COMMUNITY GIVEBACK AND TEAM PERFORMANCE. THE TEAM THAT EMPHASIZED THIS CRITERIA FOR JULY IS THE BISMARCK WIZARDS BASKETBALL TEAM.

NOMINATED BY BRYAN VERDOUW Introducing the Bravera Team of the Month for July, the Bismarck Wizards! The Wizards are a basketball team of 5th grade boys from local schools in Bismarck such as Bismarck at St. Mary's Grade School, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, and Liberty Elementary. Team members include Vincent Ruggles, Declan Bjornson, Beckam Johnson, Hudson Wedel, Ethan Barth, Holden Greenstein, Jace Honeyman, and Charlie VerDouw.

This was the Wizards second season playing together. The team has made a lot of progress on the basketball floor over the past two years, improving their individual skills and their team cohesion. The team had a successful season ending their schedule with a better than .500 record and achieving two second-place tournament finishes. They have worked hard this season on and off the court, demonstrating sportsmanship and community outreach.

On the court, the players work as one team, ensuring that each member is involved and having fun. Coach VerDouw has ensured that each player encourages others, including the opponents. Trash talking to the other team, referees, scorekeepers, and coaches is not an element of the Wizards culture. Respect and honesty are two things the coach wants these boys to walk away with at the end of each season. If Coach VerDouw had one quote for each player to remember, it would be 'Leave things better than you found them.'

Off the court, these boys still work hard to make an impact within the community.

Over the past three years, the team has raised money through their Lemonade Day sales, which has gone towards purchasing new playground equipment and food for the United Way Backpack Program. Some players have also done small services such as mowing their grandparent's lawn or being regular altar servers at their churches. During the McQuades softball Tournament, some of the players helped clean the softball diamonds after each game. One of them has even gone above and beyond to assist a former day care provider who broke her neck. He took time out of his day to visit her and help her with chores around the house.

The Wizards have demonstrated sportsmanship, community giveback, and athletic excellence both on the court and in the community, earning them the title of the Bravera Team of the month.

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES

BILL SORENSON

BY BISMARCK MAGAZINE Born and raised in Bismarck, Bill Sorensen has been involved in the community in various ways, not only helping to preserve Bismarck’s history, but also as a large part of its history. Bill has devoted countless hours to making the community a better place for present and future generations.

“Bismarck has left an imprint on me, and I’m very thankful for the education that I got here and the people, so if I’m able to do anything that pays back a little, it’s great,” he says.

While many know Bill from his various different roles and shows in Medora, he has been an active part of the community even before he started performing. After coming back from college, Bill decided to run for city commissioner which he was elected to in 1978. He served in this role for eight years, before deciding to run for the state legislature. He served two terms in that position, and then ran for mayor. He held the office for three terms over twelve years. While Bill was in office, the mayoral term was changed from April to June, meaning he served for an extra three months, making him the longest-serving mayor of Bismarck.

Outside of politics, Bill brought about many important things for Bismarck. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Belle Mehus, bringing it from an almost unusable space back to its former grandeur and beauty. He founded the Dakota Wizards, a professional basketball team based in Bismarck that played for seven years before they were relocated to California. Bill also managed Virgil Hill, a Hall of Fame American boxer, Olympic silver medalist, and a North Dakota native, and in doing so, started a boxing commission in North Dakota.

And, as he might be best known for, Bill has been doing shows in Medora for 46 years.

“It’s my happy place,” he explains. “I love doing shows, and I love doing it to this day.”

Truly, Bill’s passion for the community of Bismarck comes through in his joy for his work.

“There’s still not one show where I go do it and I don’t go, yay, I get to make people laugh, I get to go have fun, so I’m going to keep doing that as long as I’m able.”

SR. NICOLE KUNZE Before North Dakota was a state, the Benedictine sisters came to Bismarck in 1878 to educate the German immigrant children.

“They rode the train west, got off the train one day, and started teaching the next day,” tells Sister Nicole Kunze. Sr. Nicole is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the history of Bismarck. “In my current role as prioress, the leader of the community, I’m called on all the time to speak on behalf of our sisters to share that story of how Benedictines came to Bismarck, why they came to Bismarck, why we’ve stayed, and what we hope to do now and into the future,” she explains.

The Benedictines have been an instrumental part of Bismarck’s growth. In 1885, these women founded the first hospital between Seattle and St. Paul.

“They had never been nurses before, but there was a need, and they answered the need,” says Sr. Nicole.

In addition, these sisters staffed the Catholic schools, and when they saw a need for higher Catholic education in Bismarck, they established the University of Mary in 1959.

“Now more recently, one of our sisters saw the need to minister to those who are homeless, those just coming out of our prison system, and that’s how Ministry on the Margins was founded,” says Sr. Nicole.

Sr. Nicole herself, who has been a part of Annunciation Monastery for 26 years, finds inspiration in the Benedictine sisters’ legacy, whose actions have forever changed our community for the better.

“I think of the 140 sisters who volunteered to leave St. Benedict’s Monastery in Minnesota and become the founding sisters here of Annunciation Monastery in Bismarck, and the sacrifices they made to establish our monastery, to continue these ministries, and to continue dreaming what can be,” says Sr. Nicole. “From my office at the monastery I look out at the cemetery, and I look to those women, as I call them the saints of Annunciation Monastery, for my inspiration and hope. I pray to them daily, asking them to intercede for our community and our ministries.”

“Benedictines as an order were never founded for a particular ministry,” explains Sr. Nicole. “We are here to meet the needs of the people here and now… so what does the future hold? It depends on what the needs of the area are.”

#13 DYLAN PERRY HOMESTAND 1 (JUNE 1 – JUNE 6) Dylan's commitment to putting on a show all night long earned him the Lark of the Homestand award. His donut and skater boy walk-ups, were not only loved by fans, but earned over 600,000 views on social media.

#33 ZEN HIATT HOMESTAND 2 (JUNE 10 – JUNE 13) Zen Hiatt was named Lark of the Homestand for his performance both on and off the field. Zen had four hits, three RBI, and walked a total of five times over the course of four games. His willingness to go above and beyond with the fans during theme nights was one of the many reasons why Zen earned this title.

#22 JULIO ROMERO HOMESTAND 3 (JUNE 21 – JUNE 24) Julio Romero's excellence on the field in addition to his singing skills in Crowd Karaoke and his super-human strength in our official Beefy Boys vs. Pickle Push-Up Contest earned him this mighty award.

#39 GARRETT YAWN HOMESTAND 4 (JUNE 29 – JULY 4) As of July 15, Garrett Yawn is 3-0 in 26 innings with a 3.46 ERA. His stellar performance along with his willingness to go above and beyond for fans by participating in on field games and signing autographs is why Garrett is deserving of this award.

#25 KAIDEN CARDOSO HOMESTAND 5 (JULY 8 – JULY 13) Kaiden Cardoso is a jack of all trades. He pitches in extra innings, entertains fans, and even makes an appearance on the Northwoods League broadcast.

Did we mention he did this all in one game? Kaiden is willing to do anything for the benefit of the team and the entertainment of fans.

Cloverdale Bacon Brussel Sprouts Sliders INGREDIENTS

1 lb. Package of Cloverdale Hickory smoked bacon 2 tbsp. Butter 1 Onion, chopped 2 Cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup Brown sugar 2 tbsp. Maple syrup 2 tbsp. Apple cider vinegar 1 tsp. Chili powder 20 Large brussel sprouts, halved 2 tbsp. Olive oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 7 oz. Wheel brie, cut into squares

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 375°. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion and cook until very soft, about 8 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add brown sugar, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, and chili powder, then season with salt and pepper. Cook until mixture has reduced and onions are jammy, about 10 minutes more. Remove from heat.

On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss brussels sprouts with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook until just tender, about 20 minutes. Let cool slightly.

In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy, about 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels, then chop into squares.

BETWEEN INNING ENTERTAINMENT LENGTH. A few of you have asked why the between-inning entertainment takes long sometimes. We understand some of you want to watch the game and see the next big hit. However, due to our contract with NWLTV and ESPN+ we are required to allocate two minutes between each inning for commercial breaks. Our players, umpires and entertainment team are all aware of this dedicated time block, which is why we have as much FUN as we can for two minutes on-the-field or in-the-stands.

ADDITIONAL SEATING. We’ve received requests this season for more tables to sit and eat, specifically for our Bravera Suite Seat and Home Plate Club members. We love that our fans want to sit and eat with their friends and family. Most ballparks have limited space for group-style seating, which requires fans to sit in their seats and eat. Thankfully due to our great partnership with Bismarck Parks and Recreation, we are able to provide picnic-style seating throughout the ballpark. As we move into 2023, we plan to work with Bismarck Parks and Recreation to identify additional space for a few more picnic tables.

ALL-INCLUSIVE FOOD VARIETY. We understand not everyone wants to eat a hot dog or hamburger every night, which is why our all-inclusive menus include an additional entree – such as pulled pork, pulled chicken and sides like macaroni and cheese, tater tot hotdish, etc. This entree stays on the menu for five games in a row and is then replaced with a different entree to help give your taste buds a little variety. That’s why, if you attend the games on a daily basis, you may notice the same food on the buffet line. The ballpark classics such as hot dogs and hamburgers remain on the menu each game due to their popularity. Want to know what’s on the menu before your next game?
