a letter from the principal

This year, Bishop Noll began its 104th school year and welcomed its largest student body in decades. With 683 students and 97 staff members, Bishop Noll is brimming with opportunities for the youth of Northwest Indiana. Our school theme, “In it to win it!” perfectly encapsulates our commitment to excellence.

On orientation day, I shared this theme with our students and explained its significance. As Warriors, we will undoubtedly face challenges this school year. But by preparing, adapting to obstacles, and working hard with a positive attitude, we can persevere. For freshmen, this might mean simply adjusting to high school life. For seniors, it could mean securing admission to their dream college. Whatever challenges our students encounter, our goal at BNI remains steadfast: to provide them with the best possible preparation.

To support our mission, we’ve invested in significant facility upgrades. The outdated AV rooms have received a makeover, and unused spaces have been transformed into functional and inviting learning environments. Our brand-new stadium, a crown jewel of our campus, is a testament to our commitment to providing top-notch facilities. Together with our qualified staff and clear mission, BNI continues to set the standard for excellence in Northwest Indiana.

As we embark on this new school year, we invite our alumni, supporters, and future Warriors to join us at events that showcase the greatness of Bishop Noll. Whether it’s Homecoming, alumni events, band concerts, plays, or athletic events, we encourage you to be a part of our vibrant community. Remember, once a Warrior, always a Warrior, and there’s NOLL place like home.

God’s blessings,

A New Home for All Warriors

Celebrating the opening of the Warriors’ state-of-the-art athletic stadium

Key Features

• Turf field for football and soccer

• 8-lane regulation track

• Modern amenities and technology

• Enhanced safety and accessibility

• New grandstand with seating for 1,400

• New pressbox

• Lighting and sound system upgrades

“We are grateful for the people who helped make this possible. The stadium is stunning. It is a privilege to be able to play with such a great team, at a great school, and on a brand new field! The new stadium has enhanced our quality of training. Having a new leveled turf field makes training more accessible during rainy seasons. The new stadium has created an atmosphere that motivates our team to drive us to be champions!”

The Most Rev. Robert J. McClory, Bishop of the Diocese of Gary, blesses Bishop Noll’s new stadium Aug. 15. Attendees are on the concourse, protected from rain by the new grandstand.

The Turf

A commitment to student-athlete safety drove the decision to install high-end artificial turf during the outdoor facility renovation. Compared to the previous grass field, which would quickly wear down and harden under heavy use from three sports programs, the new playing surface offers superior cushioning and traction. BNI didn't settle for just any turf. In fact, the closest stadium with this same top-of-the-line monofilament turf and deep infill system is none other than Notre Dame Stadium.

A GRAND opening

Bishop Noll kicked off its 104th school year with a blessing and ribbon cutting of its long-awaited athletic stadium. The historic events kicked off the school year on a high note, signifying the culmination of years of planning and community support.

On Aug. 15, the school community gathered in the Bishop Noll fieldhouse for an all-school Mass, officiated by the Most Rev. Robert J. McClory, Bishop of the Diocese of Gary. Following the Mass, the clergy blessed the new athletic stadium, formally dedicating the space for student-athletes and future champions.

“Bless this place and all those gathered here, grant all of them that they may find welcome and experience joy, sportsmanship, teamwork and friendship,” Bishop McClory said.

The excitement continued on Aug. 19 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held just before the girls’ soccer game, the first official competition on the new field.

This state-of-the-art athletic stadium is a testament to the generosity of BNI stakeholders. It will serve all students, with a particular focus on enhancing the experiences of the football, soccer and track teams. This milestone marks the first major outdoor improvement to the Bishop Noll campus since the current classroom facility opened in 1963. It comes at a time of tremendous growth for the school, which is experiencing its highest enrollment in 24 years, and signifies a renewed commitment to fostering a vibrant and dynamic school community.

“This is an incredible moment for our athletic programs and athletes. They can now showcase their talents in a space they can truly be proud of. Our school motto this year is ‘In It to Win It,’ and this new stadium embodies that spirit perfectly.”
—Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick '01

Pursuing Their Dreams

The graduates headed to 37 different colleges and universities in 9 states throughout the country including Saint Mary's College, Holy Cross College, Middlebury College, Loyola University, Purdue University, Indiana University, Ball State University, Grand Canyon University, Valparaiso University, University of Illinois Chicago, Rochester Institute of Technology and more!

Graduation was a little extra special for the Class of 2024, a group that entered their freshman year known as “the Covid Class.” Their first year at Noll was marked by unprecedented hurdles as they navigated the typical rigors of high school while also adapting to mask mandates, remote learning, and social distancing. Despite these obstacles, they persevered and, on June 6, celebrated their collective and individual triumphs as Warriors.

“My

The Baccalaureate Mass took place June 6 at Holy Angels Cathedral with Bishop Robert J. McClory presiding. Assisting him were Deacon Martin Brown ’79 and Father Jeff Burton.
Laura Bautista, Bishop Noll’s valedictorian attends Indiana University Bloomington to major in biology. In her commencement speech, she told classmates, “We face endless possibilities. Success is not defined by a single destination but by the journey itself. We are the generation that will lead with empathy and innovation. In a world that often feels divided, our ability to understand and share the feeling of others will be our greatest strength.”
Salutatorian Grace Shebish attends the University of South Florida. In her commencement speech, she spoke about the Class of 2024’s four years of high school.

Welcome Class of 2028

205 freshmen from 27 different zip codes in Indiana and Illinois officially became Warriors this August. Of these, 156 are Catholic—highlighting our continued commitment to faith-based education— and 13 are legacy students.

Drama Productions

The Drama Department staged the musical “Matilda” this spring, with Lizbeth Gonzalez ’25 delivering a captivating

performance in the title role. The production was a resounding success, showcasing the talents of the cast and crew. Gonzalez’s portrayal of Matilda, a precocious young girl who defies authority, was both powerful and heartwarming.

Up Next

The department will present the play “Leaving Iowa” Nov. 14–16. The spring musical is scheduled for April 10–13. Stay tuned for ticket info.

The Fine Arts Department welcomed new leaders as students continued to enjoy the renovated band room and a newly donated baby grand piano. The band room renovations, completed over the past two years, added a sound recording studio, new storage, flooring, paint, lockers, furniture, and more. The baby grand piano, a Straube piano originally built at the Hohman Avenue factory in Hammond was donated by the Joan Malatestinic ’55 Family.

Welcome

Nora Wragg, a 2020 graduate of BNI, returns to her alma mater this year to teach theater, choir, and performing arts. She holds a bachelor’s degree in musical theater from Western Illinois University.

“The best thing about working at BNI is the fact that it's Catholic-centered and we all share a common faith,” Wragg said.

Tre’von James also joins Bishop Noll as the new music teacher and band director. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Bethel College and a master’s of music education from Campbellsville University.

“My favorite part is seeing the traditions Bishop Noll has in place and I'm now part of it. I look forward to shaping the Fine Arts programs into the vision of Mr. Carioto,” James said.

Seniors express artistic sides with parking lot as canvas

Seniors added a vibrant touch to their high school experience with a new parking lot personalization initiative. For the first time, senior students had the opportunity to customize their parking spots with their own creative designs.

For a nominal fee, seniors could claim a parking spot and unleash their artistic side by painting it over the summer.

Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick expressed her enthusiasm for the event. “Sometimes as schools, we can get caught up in rules and forget to allow our students

to simply have fun. This initiative was a great way to build camaraderie and create a more lively campus atmosphere.”

Senior Molly Whelan created an “Up” themed parking spot. She said, “I wanted to do something fun that also included what I love. I love Disney, and the words ‘adventure is out there’ really stood out to me because I’m super excited for senior year adventures.”

Creating the parking spot was a timeconsuming process, taking Whelan and her helpers more than 11 hours. They faced challenges such as running out of paint and needing to apply multiple layers to achieve the desired effect. Students were responsible for purchasing art supplies.

Senior Brandon Jimenez also participated. He said, “I think painting these parking spots will be one of the greatest traditions at BNI. It’ll be something for future classes to look forward to.”

Jimenez’s design was inspired by the album cover of the song “Mr. Brightside” and reflects the alternative music he enjoys with his family

The personalized parking spots have not only added a colorful touch to the BNI campus but have also provided seniors with a fun and memorable way to express themselves and celebrate their senior year.

Senior’s Eagle Scout project leaves lasting impact

Owen Snow ’24 has achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Inspired by his father, David Snow ’93, Snow joined Cub Scouts in first grade and has been actively involved in the program ever since.

For his Eagle Scout project, Snow led the construction of an enclosure around a statue of Mary at St. John Bosco in Hammond. His dedication and hard work have earned him recognition from his school and community.

“The Eagle rank is something that I had been pursuing since I first understood what it was in Cub Scouts,” Snow said.

boys basketball coach: opportunity ‘a dream come true’ Ryan Schooler ’06 has been hired to lead the boys basketball team. Schooler expressed his excitement about the opportunity and his commitment to building on the program’s recent success.

“Being named the varsity basketball coach at Bishop Noll is a dream come true,” Schooler said. “I can’t wait to get started and help grow the momentum that has clearly been established. The outpouring of love and support I continually receive will forever be a source of pride and inspiration for me.”

A shooting guard who set BNI season and career records for three-point baskets, Schooler was a member of Bishop Noll’s 2004 sectional championship team under Coach Ed Fierek. He went on to play at Lincoln College in Illinois, and earned a degree in applied science. He subsequently studied management at Purdue University Calumet. Since 2007, he coached basketball at the AAU, CYO and town youth league levels before coaching at Bishop Noll last year.

Schooler replaces John Dodson, who resigned after four seasons as coach. An assistant coach last year, Schooler played a significant role in helping Dodson’s Warriors post a 20–8 record that included conference and sectional championships.

“I will work tirelessly to cultivate and maintain a winning culture; help to develop players physically, academically and spiritually; and give our team and our players an advantage through advance scouting, game planning and program development,” Schooler said.

Brickie Scramble Champions

Congratulations to the girls golf team for placing first at the 2024 Hobart Lady Brickie Golf Invite. Led by new coaches, Trenton Haraminac and Hannah Lareau ’12, the Lady Warriors came in first with a cumulative score of 40. The annual Lady Brickie Invite, hosted by Hobart High School, consisted of a 9-hole scramble tournament and featured teams such as Boone Grove, Wheeler, Calumet and Griffith. The team ended the season 10–4 and placed 4th in Sectionals Sept. 23. Great job, Warriors!

Sibling soccer stars shine bright

As a senior, Enya Zavala relishes the opportunity to share the field with her younger brothers.

“It feels cool just because it’s my last year playing and I get to share that experience with them,” she said. “Playing in the stadium is a great way to end my senior season and being able to enjoy it, especially having my family also being included with it as well.”

Carlos ’27 said it was strange at first to share the field with his brother because as younger athletes, they always played on separate teams.

“Now we play on the same team and practice every day together.”

He said playing soccer at Bishop Noll has shaped him as a person.

“I now know how to manage my time better than most people, because every day I have school practice and I have to eat, shower, and do homework.”

Hugo ’28 echoed his siblings’ sentiments, noting that playing together has strengthened their sibling relationship.

“We spend more time together outside of home,” he said. “The new stadium... is close to home and my parents can support me.”

The new soccer field is a fresh canvas, where three sets of Warrior siblings are writing their own chapters in the Warrior story.

Among the talented athletes are the Zavala siblings: Carlos, Enya and Hugo; the Urbinas: Jesus and Aaron; and the Zukelys: Zebediah and Zekiel.

Soccer player Jesus Urbina Jr. ’26 also shares the playing field with his sibling, Aaron ’27.

“Sharing the field with him makes us both feel more confident and supported,” he said. “The wins mean even more when they are shared with him.”

Jesus believes that playing together has strengthened their sibling bond.

“It feels great because we guide each other through the difficult times in the sport. He understands the commitment, and what it takes to have each other’s back on challenging days,” he said.

One of Jesus’ most memorable moments at Bishop Noll was when Bishop McClory blessed the new field. It was an honor to be a part of that, he said.

Looking ahead, Jesus is optimistic about the future of Bishop Noll soccer. “I believe the new stadium will encourage more students to get involved in our school sports,” he said.

Aaron agrees, saying the team is only going to improve with more students coming in, students like his big brother.

“In an amazing way the school is so blessed to have this opportunity and it will 100 percent lead to growth in all areas of sports and just make the entire school compete better.”

For Aaron, playing soccer has helped shape him as a person.

“It helped me make

The Zukley brothers are used to keeping the soccer turf in the family.

Both previously played on the same team as brother Xavier ’23.

“Playing soccer with my brothers has been an amazing experience,” Zekiel ’25 said. “There’s nothing like the family you create on the playing field being a part of your real-life family.”

Brother Zebediah ’26 agrees.

“I always looked up to my brothers and couldn’t wait to become a Warrior. To be playing together, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.” Both Zeke and Zeb also are playing football this fall for BNI.

Scholarship Fundraiser

The inaugural Jon Bock Memorial 3v3 Tournament took place July 7 at Bishop Noll. Twelve teams competed and raised more than $2,500. All money raised goes toward the Jon Bock Memorial Scholarship Fund. Jon Bock ’12 passed away after a short illness in 2019. He had been a proud BNI Warrior and played guard for the State-runner up team in 2011.

Theology Department reimagined to better support students,

staff in school mission

The Theology Department experienced a makeover and added new faces. Kevin Driscoll, who previously taught sophomore theology at Noll, is the new director of mission and ministry. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications/broadcasting from Illinois State and a master’s degree in pastoral studies from the Catholic Theological Union.

Driscoll was also recently appointed to serve as the theology department chair. Before his move to BNI, Driscoll served the Diocese of Gary for 16 years as its Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, working directly for Bishops Dale Melczek and Donald Hying.

reunions

Classes of 1993 & 1994

The classes of 1993 and 1994 held a combined 30th reunion in July at The Design Barn in Hebron. Classmates reminisced about the days of dial-up internet, slap bracelets and “grunge” being a legitimate fashion choice.

The Bishop Noll Class of 1974 reunited in September for a memorable event that brought together classmates from across the country. Held at the school's cafeteria, the reunion was a celebration of friendship and nostalgia.

The event kicked off with a cocktail party, where attendees enjoyed drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and reminisced about their shared experiences. Organizers created a display of scanned senior photo pages, which sparked lively conversations and reconnections.

Upcoming Reunions

Class of 1980

Members of the Class of 1980 are interested in planning a 45th reunion next year. For more information or to join the reunion committee, please email Mark Webster at webster.cubbie@gmail.com.

Following the cocktail party, guests moved to the STREAM Lab for a touching tribute to classmates who had passed away. Betsy Kovacik shared heartfelt words and read the names of those who were no longer with them. Paul Mullaney provided an update on the school, and Jesse Becerra said grace.

Thank you to the Class of 1974 for donating table cloths that future classes can use when they hold reunions at Bishop Noll!

Class of 1974 reunites at BNI

in memoriam

In Memory of Mr. C

The Bishop Noll community continues to honor Rocco Carioto, BNI’s band director who passed away last winter.

Before the Homecoming football game, band members, alumni and Mr. Carioto’s family gathered at the Bishop Noll athletic stadium to dedicate the band room in memory of Mr. Carioto. Band room renovations, completed over the past two years, have transformed the space with a sound recording studio, new storage, flooring, paint, lockers, furniture, and more.

In addition, a memorial bench, kindly donated by Jim Thiel ’60, is now on display in the main lobby. The bench’s finishing touches were added by faculty and students, with the notes to the tune of Cartioto’s favorite Jazz song, The Girl from Ipanema.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Please remember those Catholic Central and Bishop Noll alumni who have gone to their eternal rest.
