ANNUAL REPORT 2023–24 SCHOOL YEAR
Educating students in MIND, BODY AND SOUL for 100+ years
EST. 1921
Dear fellow Warriors,
As this edition of the Annual Report highlights the scores of accomplishments at Bishop Noll Institute during the 2023–24 school year, we acknowledge we have much for which to give thanks.
Many of these blessings stand out, such as our continued enrollment growth; the $27 million-plus total of college scholarship offers received by the Class of 2024; the long-awaited first phase of our athletic facilities renovation becoming a reality; and the continued growth and formation of our students, guided and supported by a wonderfully dedicated faculty, college of coaches and supporting staff.
But I want to highlight one other significant accomplishment from 2023–24 that offers genuine perspective on our school’s rich tradition and future vision that we, as BNI family, cherish and celebrate: the release of our 308-page history book documenting the first 100 years of Bishop Noll (and Catholic Central High School, our original name).
Loaded with details and fascinating stories from our founding in 1921 through our centennial celebration in 2021, this quality coffee-table book is the result of more than four years of intensive work. That passionate effort was spearheaded by former English and journalism teacher Terry McMahon Putz ’66, the book’s researcher and primary author, with significant assists from Jennifer Florek, BNI’s communications coordinator, and other members of our volunteer history committee. That scrupulous attention to detail led to “Forever Noll: The First 100 Years of Bishop Noll Institute” being released in Fall 2023 to rave reviews. A comprehensive historical chronicle and a great complement to the centennial documentary that BNI produced, the book features stories, photos and facts from each of our first 100 school years. Its publishing was made possible by a sponsoring grant from the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union.
Since the book’s release, Terry and Jen have showcased the book at historical presentations at library branches in the Region, with plans to hold additional events in the near future. Additionally, contents of the book were implemented into the curriculum for this year’s Freshman Seminar, a first-semester course to introduce our new students to high school and, most importantly, to the culture, expectations and traditions of what it means to be part of the BNI Family
And therein lies much of the beauty of our rich history, and the role it plays in moving forward. As the book depicts, for more than a century, BNI/ CCHS has served our students and families by remaining relevant and current while championing educational excellence and achievement in a faith-filled environment. In many instances, actually, our history reveals that our school advanced “ahead of the curve” and has been a trendsetter in the educational arena. That drive to lead remains a priority with today’s BNI.
Though the playing field has greatly changed over 100-plus years, our Catholic mission has not. Our mission statement today notes that BNI “forms disciples as we set the standard for academic excellence,” as we have done since 1921. Our purpose to deliver a Christ-centered educational foundation has held firm through depression, recession, times of war, social strife, labor strife, political divide, terrorism, epidemic and pandemic.
We invite you to help us continue delivering on our mission benefiting the Region’s young men and women of today and tomorrow. Your time, talent and/or treasure can make a great impact for our students. We would be grateful if you’d reach out to our team with a willingness to help.
With gratitude, and Forever Noll!
Paul B. Mullaney ’77 President
OUR MISSION
Bishop Noll Institute, a Catholic high school, forms disciples as we set the standard for academic excellence in college preparatory education, embracing students of all faiths and cultures in a safe and welcoming environment.
• 176 freshmen from 20 different zip codes joined the school.
• Eight new teachers were added to accommodate growing enrollment. In winter, the school mourned the loss of band director, Mr. Rocco Carioto.
• 18 seniors achieved a GPA of 4.0 or above, earning the “graduates with distinction” ranking.
• Students benefited from the $1.45 million STREAM Lab, the only one of its kind in Northwest Indiana.
• The school received several room makeovers. Updated spaces include student services offices, science labs and A/V rooms.
• The Class of 2024 earned $27 million in college scholarship offers.
• 121 graduates were celebrated during a Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement June 6, 2024.
• Students chose from more than 20 extracurricular activities, including academic teams, clubs and performing arts.
• Student Council organized Homecoming, including spirit week, a pep rally and an all school dance in the cafeteria.

• The Speech Team competed at the state level, with several members achieving high accolades.
• The band performed at parades and at sporting events in addition to the annual Christmas concert and Rocco Carioto Memorial Concert in the spring.
• The Campus Ministry program facilitated spiritual retreats, all-school Masses and daily prayer.
• Catholic Schools Week was celebrated Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 with a spirit week, teacher vs. student volleyball game and the traditional Catholic Schools Week Mass, inviting local elementary students to join BNI students in Mass.
• Bishop Robert J. McClory celebrated Mass at BNI on Thanksgiving and for Catholic Schools Week.
• Students engaged in various service projects, including a community garden, food drives, peanut butter collection, and blood drives.
• The girls volleyball and boys basketball teams won sectionals.
• Students and athletes had the chance to watch the athletic stadium undergo its transformation as construction continued.
• Several seniors continued their athletic careers in college.
• The Advancement Department hosted The Alumni & Friends Golf Invitational, the Big Event, alumni watch parties and the Homecoming Tailgate Party.
• Alumni organized a Princess Tea fundraiser at BNI in December.
• Alumni played along with the Queen of Hearts fundraiser at BNI, especially at Lenten fish fry dinners, raising money for the Fielding our Future campaign.
• Voted the Region’s Best Private High School by The Times’ readers in the 2024 Best of the Region contest for the second consecutive year.
Following are gifts made to the Warrior (Annual) Fund from bequests, grants, outdoor athletic facilities project, and established scholarships from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. Supporters on this list truly make a positive impact shaping the trajectory of Bishop Noll Institute.

“ I love the opportunities and understanding that Bishop Noll has. They really try to create a family feeling for their students and staff. They try to show their appreciation to everyone that makes BNI who and what it is, even to the former students that chose to still go back and donate time and money.”
—Rubi Ayala ’26

Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other.
Filled with desire, we respond to Your call for discipleship by shaping our lives in imitation of Christ. We profess that the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts.
As stewards, we receive Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.
We pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call others to that same endeavor. Almighty and ever-faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
