English: Summer Reading
All students are required to read the selections listed for their levels of English. Students will have a project, paper, or test over their reading the first week of school.
• Honors Freshmen: Lord of the Flies by William Golding
• Freshmen (all others) Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis Major
Math: Freshman Math Pretest and Summer Practice
PreTest
• All freshmen will take a written pretest within the first week of school.
Complete list found on school website. (Soph - Senior)
• Results of this pretest will help confirm students’ correct placement in their freshmen math class.
• Students may be moved to a different math class at the start of the school year based on the results.
• Other factors used to determine appropriate placement include the High School Placement Test and teacher recommendation.
Summer Math Practice
All students at Bishop Miege are encouraged to practice prerequisite skills before the start of school. This is an optional assignment. However, the assigned summer practice for freshmen will be especially useful in preparing them for the pretest and refreshing essential skills for success. Students are welcome to skip skills that they are already familiar with.
The DeltaMath platform allows students to complete as many problems as they would like for each skill. It provides examples, help videos (linked just above each problem), and unlimited practice. After registering, students may access the practice any time at deltamath.com
World Language: Placement Exams
To access the summer Math practice for freshmen: deltamath.com (Code: WQ5T-6WT7) or bit.ly/MiegeDeltaMath
The link for upper classmen will be emailed.

Recommended School Supplies:
Each teacher determines their own supply list. You will have time to purchase supplies after the first day of class on Aug. 18. General supplies include: pens, pencils, notecards, a couple of binders (1-inch binder and a 3-inch binder), folders, notebook paper/notebooks etc. Other supplies might include a calculator (instructions will be sent about the types of calculators depending on your math class).
Call the attendance line 913.222.5992 or call the nurse line 913.222.5834 to report an absence.
Immunizations
The State of Kansas requires students to have a current immunization record on file at the student’s school.
Please submit the most up-to-date immunization record to the nurse prior to your child’s entrance to Miege (as a freshman or as a transfer), and then again junior year (after receiving the Meningococcal series).
Medical or religious exemption for immunizations
A form must be submitted to Bishop Miege at the beginning of every school year; contact the nurse for this information.
Medications
All medication administered at school requires parental permission; the over-the-counter medication parental permission form is completed annually when your student is registered for the school year. For prescription medications, please complete the prescription form found on the website. (in the quick links) and send it to the nurse office.
Asthma inhalers and epinephrine pens can be kept with the student; all other medications should go to the nurse including as needed medications and short duration medications (such as a course of antibiotics).
Chronic Condition Care Plans
If your child has a diagnosis of asthma (requiring use of a prescription inhaler in the last year), seizure disorder (requiring a rescue medication), Type I diabetes, or a severe allergy requiring the use of an epinephrine pen, the school needs an action plan completed by your child’s physician at the beginning of every school year and sent to the nurse office. Feel free to contact the nurse for forms if your physician does not have one.
Mental Health
National school nurse numbers reflect that up to thirty percent (30%) of daily school nurse visits may be in relation to stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. Many of these stressors show up physically in symptoms such as headache and stomach issues. The nurse’s office is sometimes a safe place to take a quick break, work on relaxation exercises to utilize in the classroom, or talk. The nurse also works in conjunction with our guidance counselors and our social/emotional counselor. Feel free to communicate with the nurse regarding any concerns.
