Spring2024
Rugged is the literary arts magazine of Bishop Dunne Catholic School, a digital publication of student work.
The first issue of Rugged came out in spring 2012. Today, the creative work of Bishop Dunne students continues to shine. This issue features several entries from the 2024 Bishop Dunne Literary Festival art contest. This year’s featured author, Mr. Gene Luen Yang, is an award-winning graphic novelist. Students were invited to submit a piece illustrating a quotation from one of Mr.Yang’s works:“Sometimes, a fight you cannot win is still worth fighting.” (The Shadow Hero)
Students in Dr. Jason Walker’s English IV class studied The Sound and the Fury this semester. One of their projects over that novel was to illustrate a theme in a poster or a mosaic. Some of their work is here.
Thank you to the students who have worked hard and to their teachers, who support their creative work every day.
We hope you enjoy it.

THE SOUND AND THE FURY
The Sound and the Fury is Faulkner’s best-known work and one of the most challenging novels of the 20th century. Dr. Jason Walker’s seniors rose to that challenge, reading and analyzing this complex work. For one assignment on the novel, students could choose to create a poster illustrating a theme and answering questions on that theme from the novel, or they could create an evidence mosaic that had to include at least eight sections. The following are some of those projects

Mission Statement
Bishop Dunne Catholic School empowers each student to explore, inquire, lead, and serve through a college preparatory education in a joyful community of faith.

Bishop Dunne Library: A Message from the Librarian
The Bishop Dunne Library is a place for students to explore and discover the joys of reading, as well as a place to learn the skills to navigate a constantly changing, technologically sophisticated environment. My mission as the librarian is to help students become lifelong learners, equipped with the tools to navigate, evaluate, analyze, and understand the wealth of information they will encounter throughout their lives.
Rugged began as a platform for students to share their creative work. Like many of the books that are available to students in the library,
these works are often not directly connected to an assignment or to a course; they may sometimes be far from typical classwork.
But learning is not confined to the school walls. Reading, writing, and creating are joyful enterprises that we encourage in every part of our students’ lives.
It is a pleasure to share their work. I hope you enjoy it.
