Message from the President

T

he past school year was exciting as we steadily returned to full activity level. Our students were completely engaged and once again enjoyed daily on-campus classes, clubs, extracurriculars and full athletic schedules. Voices were ringing at pep rallies, games, and drama performances. Band and strings performed regularly, art classes resumed working with all mediums and class retreats resumed, vitalizing camaraderie, and strengthening spirituality. The smallest joys, such as sharing tables during lunch, which are considerably livelier, were back in the spring semester. School life returned to “normal.”

Michael Alfers was selected as the 2022 State Teacher of the Year, by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department. Alfers, a 1997 graduate of Bishop Dunne and a 21-year teacher at the school, is assistant director of the middle school, coach, and beloved mentor and teacher. This was the second consecutive year a Bishop Dunne educator was awarded this prestigious honor.

We launched our new Strategic Plan in the fall with a clear vision of the Bishop Dunne we want for the future. We welcomed Jenny Hood as Director of Admission and Financial Aid and Elisa Goodwin as Director of Development and Alumni Relations. Jenny and Elisa bring energy to recruiting and a strong, focused plan for short- and long-term development goals and re-engaging alumni.

The Bishop Dunne Dads Club, a steadfast supporting arm for the school, held its annual drive-through Christmas parade in December and spring car show. Both events were tremendously successful, hosting hundreds of participants and attendees, bringing community to our campus and joy to all.

Through various fundraising activities, the Dads Club was able to award grants to two applying groups, cheer and dance, providing funding to attend cheer camp and new poms for the Falconettes. The Dads Club continues to selflessly lend its hands to any group needing support, throughout the year.

This year, led by a group of dedicated parents, we formed the Parents Association Council (PAC), to help with everything from welcoming new families, chaperoning dances, and working athletic events, to event planning and fundraising. This arm of support for Bishop Dunne is actively planning and supporting the extended needs of the school, and for that, we are grateful.

Honors Convocation, the 8th Grade Celebration, Baccalaureate, and Commencement all took place in May, fully attended by families and friends. Twenty-nine Golden Falcons were awarded at Honors Convocation for academics, athletics and extra-curricular activities, along with two scholarships and four spirit awards. Baccalaureate was once again held at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Commencement returned to

Concord Church, where Dr. Veronica Alonzo, Associate Superintendent Catholic Schools Office, joined me for the conferral of diplomas.

The Class of 2022 is a mighty group of achievers who will attend colleges and universities all over the nation. Seventy percent of the class graduated with honors and 94 percent of the graduates were accepted to 152 colleges and universities. Seventy-five percent of accepted students earned more than $6.5 million in scholarships. These students will proudly carry their Bishop Dunne roots with them to institutions including Texas A & M, Tulane, University of Texas at Austin, Harvard and University of Chicago.

Before the start of next school year, we will launch our newly refurbished and completely updated GeoTech Lab and our newest addition, the gaming development lab (new name pending). Each lab is equipped with the latest PCs and MACs, new computer flooring, electrical, and furniture, to ensure our students have the ultimate research and development experiences in an aesthetically conducive learning environment. These labs were made possible by grants from the Catholic Diocese of Dallas, The Catholic Foundation, Hoblitzelle Foundation and an anonymous grant from a current family. We can’t wait to show off these new labs in the fall!

The accomplishments of our students are remarkable and continue to grow each year. I look forward to next year, to the great things our students will achieve, new programs and returning traditions. Each year I have served as your president has been more rewarding than the previous. I expect that trend to continue for the 2022-2023 school year!

Michael Alfers Named 2022 Teacher of the Year

M

ichael Alfers has been selected as the 2022 Teacher of the Year, by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department (TCCB ED). Alfers, a 1997 graduate of Bishop Dunne and a 21-year teacher at the school, is assistant director of the middle school, coach, and beloved mentor and teacher. This the second consecutive year a Bishop Dunne educator has been awarded this prestigious honor.

TCCB ED assists Catholic schools in the state of Texas with continuous school improvement initiatives, accountability with best educational practices, strengthening

of mission and identity, and improving academic performance. This award was created to recognize and celebrate Catholic school teachers across the state who have shown remarkable dedication to the spiritual and intellectual formation of their students.

“I am honored, grateful and humbled by this award. I truly believe it is not just for me, but a credit to the students, faculty, administration, Dads Club members, and everyone in the extended Bishop Dunne community,” said Alfers.

A Social Studies teacher, his courses include Texas History, US History, Government, Economics, World Cultures and World Geography as well as a course about

the 1960s in America. He coached varsity basketball for 15 years and is currently the middle school basketball coach.

Alfers is also the moderator for the Dads Club, which organizes projects and fundraisers to support the school and the community. During the pandemic, he led an effort to purchase meals from local restaurants owned by Bishop Dunne families to help feed school families who experienced financial or medical hardships. He is also the inspiration for a new Bishop Dunne tradition, the Christmas Classic parade, now an annual affair that Alfers and the Dads Club started in December 2020. The Dads Club decorates the campus with Christmas lights, various student clubs contribute festive displays, and the band and orchestra play Christmas music.

Consistently going above and beyond the scope of his role, Alfers made in-person visits to students struggling with remote learning and organized sports activities when league sports were cancelled. According to Bishop Dunne President, Mary Beth Marchiony, “Michael looks for ways to serve. He serves students, families, and our faculty and staff, always putting the needs of others ahead of his own.”

In May 2021, Alfers was named HALO Educator of the Year as well as a recipient of the Work of Heart Award from The Catholic Foundation in December 2020.

Michael Alfers is a graduate of the University of Dallas and has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Notre Dame.

Marlowe Martensen’22

C

harlsie Marlowe Martensen has lived in Oak Cliff all her life. She lives in a historic district of Oak Cliff with her parents, Dorsey and Blake Martensen, and her siblings McClain (class of 2018) and Burke (class of 2027). McClain just finished her third year at University of Boulder, CO, and Burke is in seventh grade at Dunne.

Marlowe attended Rosemont Elementary School for K-5 and came to Dunne in sixth grade.

Marlowe has been interested in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) since her freshman year. She has continued to take GIS classes and work on mapping projects with Mr. Brad Baker. Several of her interests and studies came together for her senior project. The idea was sparked in part by reading the novel Sula by Toni Morrison for Mr. Damian McDonald’s class. The story describes how former slave owners displaced the recently freed enslaved people from land the federal government gave them after the Civil War. The topic of displacement was already on Marlowe’s mind because of conversations about gentrification in her neighborhood and in her Spanish classes. After completing three years of Spanish, Marlowe was taking

Advanced Spanish class as an independent study with Dr. Diana Torres Rivera her senior year.

Marlowe said she has seen big changes in her neighborhood, but not transformational change. As she explains, “It’s not really a transformation if you don’t take what was there and transform it—incorporate new things with the old.” Instead, it was a tearing down of the old to replace it with something new.

So, with her research on Sula, her independent study with Dr. Torres Rivera, and her own observations, she began asking the question: What are the main causes of displacement? She also believed gentrification was having a negative impact on her neighborhood.

Using data she collected from U.S. census reports and other public records, and analyzing it through GIS software, Marlowe illustrated her hypothesis of the negative impact of gentrification on Oak Cliff neighborhoods. She researched the 2020 census and other public records for her AP English project. She drew on her experience in her Advanced Geotech course with Mr. Baker to collate that data and create maps to show a variety of factors that influence and shape the makeup of Oak Cliff.

With Dr. Torres Rivera, she created a study called “Gentrification and Oak Cliff.”

The two presented their study at the annual conference of the National Association of African American Studies and Affiliates on February 15, 2022. Marlowe presented her paper in a bilingual format because Barrio Oak Cliff is bilingual. They presented maps, charts, and other visual information that confirmed the movement and displacement of residents who had lived south of I-30.

Conference participants praised Marlowe’s ease of communication and the clarity of her data. At the heart of the project is Marlowe’s desire to end displacement of residents and to celebrate the culture and diversity of her community. She presented several solutions to the problems gentrification brings, including protecting senior homeowners; prohibiting luxury development in at-risk neighborhoods; and reducing or freezing property taxes.

Marlowe plans to pursue these goals as she continues her education at Texas A&M. She will major in Visualization in the Department of Architecture with a minor in Urban Planning. She is interested in finding realworld applications for projects like this—in city planning, for example. She wants to integrate these things in her future career.

Chaelon Simpson ’22

B

ishop Dunne graduate, Chaelon Simpson ’22, is the embodiment of the term selfless leader, always considering the effect of his actions, as he thoughtfully powers his way to the brightest of futures. A leader, an activist, both on campus and in the community, Chaelon considers each day another opportunity to give back, through positive, constructive actions.

A dedicated son, grandson and brother, Chaelon helps care for his younger sister Chailey, who has atypical Rett syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder that leads to impairments affecting nearly every aspect of her life. He cares for his sister at home, taking on responsibility for her personal and medical needs. During quarantine in 2020, Chaelon also took on responsibility for his grandfather who had moved in with his family. He understands family comes first.

Chairman of the Bishop Dunne Math department, Gary Pinkerton remarks, “Chaelon has developed into a strong leader. Everything he does promotes a more caring individual. He thrives on new experiences and lives to assist others.”

Chaelon began his career at Bishop Dunne as a seventh-grade student, anxious about a new school with new friends and experiences. “I felt more welcome than I had at any previous school. I remember the kindness extended to me by upperclassmen on the first day of school, when I was lost and struggling to find the lunchroom. The years I’ve spent at Bishop Dunne have been the most formative years of my life.

The memories and bonds I’ve made with teachers have not only made me feel safe, but also empowered. In middle school I learned compassion, sympathy, and companionship – skills which continued helping me in high school. As a high school student, I witnessed other new students experience the same nervousness I had, and I knew exactly how to befriend and help them acclimate to Dunne.”

“If you think of a student who is ‘the face’ of Bishop Dunne, Chaelon will come to mind,” said Miranda G. Gilliam, English Department Chair. “Chaelon has a calling and a passion to lead and be a role model for his peers and residents in his community. He perseveres because he is not afraid to use his voice, ask questions, and contribute to the ongoing, and sometimes, uncomfortable discussions he encounters in his life.”

His work as Student Government president helps set the tone for all student school activities. He is president of Dunne’s African American Awareness group which puts together an amazing program each winter to help educate our school community and highlight the important contributions of African Americans. Further, Chaelon served as the lead for the Student Ambassador program, meeting with prospective families to give tours of our campus.

Concurrently, Chaelon is serving as president of NAACP Youth Council, a national organization that works to inform youth of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities. His responsibilities include leading monthly meetings, representing the council to other organizations and even leading a motorcade to combat voter suppression. “It’s so important to become engaged in your community, and I’m grateful that I’m able to actively make a difference, rather than watching from the sidelines in inaction.” His induction speech was featured in the July 11, 2021, Dallas Examiner.

He credits Bishop Dunne with helping him to overcome his fear of public speaking. “The school has always promoted peer-to-peer education, allowing students to work with other students to solve challenges. In group settings, I had to make my opinions known.

The biggest example of this was my participation in the one-act play, where I played Gunter in Auschwitz Lullaby. It was a huge departure from my comfort zone, but the experience and confidence I gained made it one of my best decisions.

The advantages in education I have been provided during my time at Dunne are immeasurable. During my six years, I’ve been constantly challenged and introduced to new concepts and experiences that have expanded my world view.” Mr. Pinkerton, WWW.BDCS.ORG

who, in addition to his responsibilities as Math Chair, directed the one-act play, commented, “Chaelon utilizes opportunities. I have watched him mature over the years into a very well-rounded individual, a student who takes advantage of every opportunity from academics to community and extracurricular activities such as theatre.”

As for college, Chaelon will attend Harvard. “It’s been my dream school since I was three years old, so it’s truly an honor!” He is excited to apply the lessons of leadership and independence learned at Dunne to his college life. “I’m also incredibly excited to move to a new state – even if it means I’ll need to stock up on winter clothing!”

“I’ll miss the close-knit community that Dunne provides. Relationships I’ve formed with my classmates and teachers are some-

thing only the Dunne community can provide. I’m leaving a space where everyone knows who I am, and one in which our personalities meld and drive our academic growth, for college - where forming bonds may be more difficult given the number of people on campus.”

He thinks his love of writing, experience in marketing and communication, along with his interest in social justice issues are leading him towards a degree in journalism, marketing and communications, or English with a minor in communications.

With his passion for service and leadership, his commitment to social justice and his ability to vocalize the truth, his impact on the world is in its infancy. As Chaelon enters the next phase of his life, Bishop Dunne will be watching the trajectory of this Falcon as he soars through life!

Parents Association Council

L

ast year, a dedicated group of Bishop Dunne parents originated the Parents Association Council (PAC). Its purpose is to encourage a strong parent group that supports the school through fundraising activities and volunteer efforts, fosters staff appreciation, nurtures communication between parents and school, and provides the best possible environment for Bishop Dunne students.

PAC membership is open to all parents and guardians of students enrolled in Bishop Dunne Catholic School. There are no dues or minimum qualifications. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend gatherings, participate in committees, and build relationships that will enrich your Bishop Dunne experience. All you have to do to get involved is complete the interest form by scanning to QR code (right).

Christine Horstman, current association president and founder, believes everyone has a passion and talent to contribute to the common good of the community and the association is an easy way to get involved. It’s also a way to strategically mobilize resources and give the next generation of parents a leg up.

Joy Smith, president-elect of Bishop Dunne’s Parents Association Council, is a strong believer in the impact a parents association can have on a school. Smith believes, “The most important role it offers WWW.BDCS.ORG

is connecting families and distributing knowledge and information to parents.”

“We want to create a playbook for future parents to build on and improve,” Horstman said.

While less than a year old, Bishop Dunne’s parents association has already made its mark on the school. From fundraising to hospitality support, parents are finding ways to get involved.

Bishop Dunne’s association welcomes all Bishop Dunne parents to become active members. “We want diversity in our association.

It’s one of the greatest assets of our school!” Horstman said.

Administrator Highlight with

Elisa Goodwin

Director of Development & Alumni Relations

E

lisa Goodwin joined us this past January as our Director of Development & Alumni Relations.

Her extensive nonprofit experience and mission-driven approach to work, make her a strong addition to the Falcon family. Elisa brings 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and more than 20 years in executive banking. She has an MBA and a B.S. in Communications. While she is no stranger to Texas, she is a transplant, having left her home in Georgia, solely to serve our students, parents, and alumni. When asked why she chose to move to Dallas and serve at Bishop Dunne, she said, “During my nonprofit career, I’ve served entities all over the world and two things have been consistent. Education

is a game-changer for youth to empower them to pursue their God-given dreams and everything changes when you fall in love with Jesus. Dunne checks both of those boxes and throws in a beautiful tapestry of diversity and inclusivity!”

Elisa has one daughter, Hayley, who is finishing her master’s degree at University of Edinburgh.

Her role will be focused on building partnerships to strategically build Dunne’s endowment fund, annual fund and other revenue streams to support a sustainable business model and the greatest experience for Dunne students and parents. She will also work closely with alumni to build a thriving alumni community that reflects the family experience they encountered while students at Dunne and to provide inspiration to impact the next generation of students.

Jenny Hood

Director of Admission & Financial Aid

W

hile not new to Catholic education in Dallas, Jenny is new to Bishop Dunne, just completing her first year as Director of Admission & Financial Aid. Jenny grew up in the Diocese of Dallas, graduating from St. Elizabeth of Hungary and Ursuline Academy. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Oklahoma, Master of Theology from University of Dallas, and most recently, a Master of Educational Leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Jenny has worked in education for 13 years, as a teacher and administrator. She comes to Dunne with five years’ experience in Admissions, and is excited to be part of the Falcon community.

“Admissions work is easy when you’re at a place as unique and welcoming as Bishop Dunne. It’s easy for families to see how their child will benefit from a Dunne education, and how they will grow as a person during their time here,” Jenny states, noting that the inclusive family environment is one of her favorite aspects of the school. “Bishop Dunne prepares students academically and socially for the world they will face upon graduation.”

When asked what makes Bishop Dunne unique, Jenny believes it’s the opportunities that await students here. From the Collegiate Institute to GIS, students can explore their individual interests, and cater their experience to be one that is distinct, allowing for passion to thrive. “I’ve seen the students take initiative on so many different projects, from creating clubs, to coming up with ideas of how to market Dunne to the outside community. I love working with the kids to bring their ideas to life and helping them realize their power in their passion and work for their school.”

For Jenny, the admissions process centers on the heart of a school, how a school makes you feel by simply walking through the doors. “I tell families a lot of the time, sometimes you just know--you have to trust your gut.” Walking the halls of Bishop Dunne, prospective families have commented on that exact gut feeling, and recognizing how special this place really is. “My job consists of getting people in the door. Once they’re here, the programs, staff and faculty, and students speak for themselves. They make it easy to show to families just how special this school truly is.”

veryone was a winner at the Bishop Dunne Golf Classic on March 28. Approximately 130 golfers joined us at Stevens Park Golf Club in Dallas to raise money so underserved youth in our community can attend Bishop Dunne and pursue their dreams of attending college! The tournament earned enough to support more than seven students with tuition assistance.

ishop Dunne celebrated its 60th anniversary in October 2021, welcoming alumni, friends and family back on campus to celebrate. An alumni and friends event and reception was held in the multi-purpose room, with a seating area outside to watch the Falcons compete on the gridiron. Homecoming King, Isaac Moreno was announced at the pep rally and Isabelle Green was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime.

GRADUATION The Class of 2022 held its graduation ceremony May 27, at Concord Church. Master of Ceremonies Chaelon Simpson was also awarded the Golden Falcon as Outstanding Graduate. Addresses were given by 2022 salutatorian and valedictorian, Isabelle Green and Marlowe Martensen.

Fr. Russ Mower, Bishop Dunne Chaplain and Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, provided both the Invocation and Benediction. Christopher MacLellan, Theology Department Chair, introduced the graduates while President Mary Beth Marchiony, and Dr. Veronica Alonzo, Associate Superintendent Catholic Schools Office conferred diplomas to the graduating seniors. The Bishop Dunne Band provided music for the occasion.

BACCALAUREATE MASS The Class of 2022 attended Baccalaureate Mass with family and friends on May 26, at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, with Fr. Russ Mower as Celebrant.

Collegiate Institute at Bishop Dunne

I

n spring of 2020, Bishop Dunne began offering students a dual diploma program through its newly established Collegiate Institute (CI), which allows students to earn 60 college credits during their high school years. CI students who successfully complete the program earn their high school diploma, while also earning an Associate’s degree from Dallas College at no additional cost. It’s an excellent way for students who plan to attend a state university in Texas to earn credits that will be accepted toward a bachelor’s degree, thus reducing college tuition and time in school by nearly half. CI is offered to freshman students as part of a four-year program. Bishop Dunne offers the majority of these classes on campus so students are able to continue their extracurricular activities and study on campus.

Incoming CI students are grouped each year in a separate cohort to receive academic and social development support in preparation for college. Our third cohort will be joining the program in fall 2022, bringing our total number of students enrolled in CI to more than 100!

Dr. Elizabeth Malveaux-Hudson leads the CI program. Current eighth grade students who are interested in applying to the program must complete an application along with an essay and pass the TSI by the end of ninth grade year.

Club Highlights

Medical Society Club

Campus Ministry

The Medical Society Club officers led members of this newly reformed group as they met regularly and were guided this year to explore topics related to the medical field. Students were able to hear some wonderful firsthand experiences by our very own athletic trainer, Coach Tye! They participated in fun medical Kahoot review games, and even wrote letters to themselves during COVID times so that they may reflect on them later in life. In addition, students collaborated with the STEM department in learning how to use the laser cutter with Mr. Sosa. Lastly, students worked hard by volunteering to restore prairie and protect wildlife with the Texas Conservation Alliance on two occasions: the Trinity River Audubon and the Buckeye Trail in Blair Park. Although students were made aware of programs including junior medical volunteering and medical career days, they are looking forward to an increase in guest speakers, field trips, and internships in the future, as well as becoming a more established group within the community and on campus in the years to come.

Julia Daniel ‘22, was the recipient of the Golden Falcon Award for both Theology and Campus Ministry.

Campus Ministry participated in our annual spiritual retreats for grades 6-10, assisted by our amazing group of Student Captains from grades 11 and 12. We were able to visit the Catholic Conference and Formation Center where we enjoyed playing ridiculous games and relays, crafted along with the retreat theme while spending valuable time building lifelong friendships and growing in faith.

Our seniors had a two-day retreat at the Mt. Lebanon Retreat Center and our juniors, a one-day retreat at Ascend Camp and Retreat Center. We participated in horseback riding, archery, Gaga ball, basketball, volleyball, futsal, crafts, dance parties and the quintessential campfire song sessions!

This year we installed the Stations of the Cross in the Chapel and met each Friday to pray together for Team Lent. We had an outstanding turnout, and many people prayed the Stations of the Cross for the first time in their lives. We practiced almsgiving through the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl program in our religion classes. Finally, we practiced fasting in unique ways (abstaining from social media and soft drinks) for a week at a time to focus on solidarity in prayer and spiritual growth.

African American Awareness

National Honor Society

Chaelon Simpson ’22 was awarded the Golden Falcon Award for African American Awareness.

In February, AAA hosted its Annual Black History Assembly, where we showcase HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and invited speakers to talk about college experiences.

AAA participates and promotes yearly community book reads.

This year, A’Lelia Bundles, author of On Her Own Ground: The Life & Times of Madam C J Walker presented a program to the group.

Past book reads have included, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, and Racism, Antiracism & You, by Jason Reynolds.

The club held a feminine products supply drive for a Zimbabwe school and hosted Annual Little Known African Americans with Children’s Genesis, as well as a library event titled Remembering Black Dallas.

NHS honored Meghana Lammata with its Golden Falcon Award.

The club collected over $700 worth of hygiene products for various charities and organizations, and more than $1700 for Dunne for a Change. The money went to Catholic Charities, The Birthday Party Project, Joni and Friends, the SPCA, and The North Texas Food Bank. Each organization received a $360 check.

Science Club The Science Club assumed responsibility for campus recycling during April and May.

National Junior Honor Society NJHS held a travel size toiletry drive for Children’s Medical Center in November and December. Members, with the help of the school, were able to donate hundreds of items to the Medical Center.

Slavic Club The Slavic Club organized an all-school fundraiser to support Ukraine. Its year-around service project is school recycling.

Club members participated in multiple live stream events via SRAS, the school of Russian and Asian Studies. Students learned about the history of Ukraine, current political situation, culture and traditions of Ukraine. Students made multiple arts and crafts projects including famous Ukrainian Easter pysanky, ancient traditional egg art.

The Arts

A

rts at Bishop Dunne had a busy year, celebrating a return to normalcy and a full slate of activities.

Mr. Pinkerton directed our theater students in the TAPPS OneAct Play competition this fall, with several students earning recognition and awards. This spring, students participated in the first live on-stage drama since 2019, performing several acts from All the Timing, by David Ives. Additionally, in partnership with Shakespeare Dallas, our students took part in Shakespeare-centered productions during the school year and summer.

Our musical Falcons show off their abilities in our many bands on campus. This year, the Drumline was the featured ensemble at the Bishop’s Golf Tournament and received superior ratings at the TAPPS Drumline Championship and the TPSMEA State Drumline Competition. The students placed fifth in the state at the TAPPS Drumline Competition.

Twenty-two beginning students made up our Sixth-grade Band, which received a Superior Rating at the Pride of Texas Music Festival. The Intermediate Band traveled to San Antonio, where they received a Silver Rating at the Heritage Festival. Students also earned 14 Superior Ratings at the TPSMEA North Region Solo/Ensemble Festival. An outstanding 45 percent of the students in the Intermediate Band were selected for honors bands across ATSSB and TPSMEA. The Advanced Band had an outstanding year as well. During a trip to New Orleans, they received a Gold Rating and Best-inClass Band at the Heritage Festival, besting schools from around the United States.

The Arts Fifteen students received Superior Ratings at the TPSMEA North Region Solo/Ensemble Festival, half of the band members were selected for honors bands across ATSSB, TPSMEA, and Four-States, with four students selected for the TPSMEA All-State Band. Abigail Martin received the Band Golden Falcon award.

Finally, our Jazz Band performed as part of the live New Orleans music scene, playing a one-hour set outside at the Spanish Plaza, and received straight Superior Ratings at the TPSMEA North Region Concert and Sight-Reading competition. Our Falcons soared to new heights with their musical talents this year!

In the classroom, students were able to experience several amazing projects led by the Art Department. Seventh grade students studied impressionism in painting, painting flower vases with their own interpretations of the style. They also learned to grid sketch drawings, and plan proportions. The beautiful outcomes served as Mother’s Day gifts for our Falcon moms. Other art classes offered to students are Advanced Painting, Photography, Film, and Drawing/Painting.

Bishop Dunne’s hallways are regularly adorned with the amazing artwork completed by our talented students.

Seniors Gabriella Saucedo and Katelyn Bagwell placed first and second, respectively, in the North Oak Cliff Dia de los Muertos competition, and the National Art Honor Society members completed over 100 community service hours while participating in nine contests and shows.

Gabriella Saucedo received a Golden Falcon for Art. Our Falcons are shining brightly in every creative outlet of the arts!

Sports Recap

A

thletics returned full force this year as Bishop Dunne teams geared up once again to face the competition challenging our athletes to put forth their best. Both high school and middle school sports enjoyed high participation and tremendous fan following as athletes took to the fields, courts, diamonds, tracks, and ranges.

Many of our students received athletic accolades, in almost every sport, for both high school and middle school, at both the district and state level.

Football kicked off the school year, with a full season of action.

TAPPS football awards went to Paul Geary for Freshman of the Year, and to Jeremiah Horn and Gary Cook who were named AllState Honorable Mention.

First Team All-District awards went to juniors, Jeremiah Horn, Gary Cook and Jesse Lara. Second Team All-District awards went to Paul Geary; juniors, Donald Quaite, Jayden Eaton and, A’Terrius Johnson. Honorable Mention All-District awards went to freshmen Quincy Rheams, and Juan Aguilar; juniors, Sylvester Lopez, and Aiden Shafer and sophomore Kyle Molett.

Craine is DPL City Champion and DPL All-City recognition went to middle school students Alonzo Powell and Miles Slovacek.

Wrestling was rewarded when junior, Jake Griffith, placed fourth in the state tournament. Junior Lauren Smith, qualified and played in the state competition for Tennis. Junior, Cooper Ford was named All-State in Swim. Trinity Harris was named Regionals MVP in Golf.

Bishop Dunne’s Archery team celebrated several archers’ successes in the State Private School Division. Freshman, Jeremiah Navarro placed first in Individual Target Archery. Sophomore, Emily Alba placed second in Individual 3D Target Archery and the team won second place in 3D Archery and Target Archery.

Softball junior, Sophia Baez, was named First Team All-District.

Second Team All-District was awarded to seniors, Alayna Prasifka and Nelly Mitchell.

Falconettes continued its tradition of success. The team placed second in the Small Team division at the Texas State Championship, and the officers won Grand Champions.

At DFW Championship, the team was awarded Best-in-Class Team and Officers in the Small Team division and Academic Champions with an overall GPA of 3.9. They ranked sixth overall, out of 30 teams, in the Best-of-the-Best competition.

Sports Recap

The social officers received a Division 1 at both competitions for their Pom routine and the team as a whole was recognized for its outstanding technique, showmanship, and choreography at both contests.

The team also brought home a first place in Jazz, Pom and Hip Hop. Falconette captain, Jadyn Franklin, placed in the top 10 soloists at the Texas State Championship and won the small school soloist division at the DFW Championship.

Boys Soccer honored five teammates. Second Team All-District was awarded to sophomore, Thomas Sheffield and junior, Jesse Lara. Honorable Mentions went to sophomore, Ricardo Marin, senior, Josh Acuna and junior, Faisal Torres.

Varsity Boys Basketball competed hard and was close to earning a playoff spot but lost the play-in game. Sophomore, Devin Miller was named First Team All-District. Second Team All-District was awarded to senior, Stevie Guerrero, and freshman Cam Marks was awarded Honorable Mention.

Varsity Girls Basketball came back to Bishop Dunne, following a four-year hiatus. The girls had a great time, enjoyed being back on the court and look forward to a bigger and better next year!

There were four teams of Girls and Boys Middle School Basketball, all of which made DPL playoffs. The seventh-grade boys team WWW.BDCS.ORG

lost in heart-breaking fashion in the DPL semi-finals on a buzzer beater by St. Rita. Next year will be a great year to watch!

Girls Soccer player, ninth grader, Alyssa Williams was awarded Second Team All-District Offense. Honorable Mention for Defense went to senior, Marlowe Martensen and Honorable Mention Keeper went to senior, Dylan Hoffman.

Volleyball senior, Marlowe Martensen was recognized as First Team All-District, with senior Christine Akpunku and junior Adrianna Barfield receiving Honorable Mentions.

Numerous outstanding boys and girls Track team members, received recognition. Sophomore Devin Miller is the 5A state champion for high jump and District Champion in the 400 meter run. Junior Jeremiah Horn is the District Champion for the 100 meter run, triple jump and long jump. All-District and All-State recognition went to Devin Miller and Jeremiah Horn. All-District was awarded to juniors Ty Wolff and Shandon King.

Baseball team pitcher and senior Marcelo Carrillo was awarded District Honorable Mention. Marcelo signed with University of Dallas to play college baseball. District Honorable Mention also went to sophomore Lloyd Lewis and freshman Jake Rodriguez.
