PRINCIPAL‘S WELCOME

BIS ABU DHABI TIMES

When I walk through the corridors of BIS Abu Dhabi, I am reminded of something that matters deeply: belonging. It is the heartbeat of our school. When students feel safe, valued, and connected, they take risks, try new things, and discover passions they never imagined. These past months have been full of those moments, moments where confidence, resilience, and joy shine through.

I have seen belonging in our youngest learners during the FS2 Winter Production, standing on stage with pride, and in our older students debating global issues at the Model UN Conference or showcasing innovation at the Year 3 and Year 7 and 8 MIT Showcase. Trips have taken students from the Grand Mosque to Yale University in the US, broadening horizons and deepening understanding. Creative projects like the Year 4 Sustainability Conference, Year 5’s Wearable Art and Secondary ECOCOUNCIL CCA have shown how learning can shape the world around us.

Belonging thrives through partnership, and this term our Parent Partnership initiative has gained real momentum, creating meaningful opportunities for families to engage with learning and future pathways.

Our Medical and Engineering Societies have opened doors to inspiring conversations about careers, leadership, and innovation, helping students see where their learning can take them next.

At the same time, we celebrated excellence in sports and the arts, from the excitement of the Triathlon and BSME Games to the joy of music during the Winter Concert and International Music Day. Global collaborations added another dimension, with students participating in the UNICEF Global Summit and the MIT Student Trip, engaging with pressing global issues, cutting-edge research, and innovative problem-solving.

As I reflect on these past months, I feel proud of the strong sense of belonging that continues to grow across our school. Thank you to our students, families, and staff for making Term 1 a chapter filled with purpose and possibility. I look forward to continuing this journey with you in the next term.

Celebrating the Gifted and Talented Across Every Stage of Learning

In our recent ADEK inspection, we were praised for our identification and support of Gifted and Talented learners. Our commitment to expertise, innovation, and impact is lived through personalised learning, real-world opportunities, and a culture that celebrates the 6 C's: curiosity, creativity, collaboration, commitment, compassion, and critical thinking.

This aligns with our mission to create world-class learning experiences that nurture empathetic, resilient, and talented individuals. At BIS Abu Dhabi, gifted education reflects this mission by recognising and celebrating diverse talents: academic, artistic, athletic, innovative, and interpersonal.

A Philosophy of Inclusive Challenge

Gifted education is no longer about identifying the few; it’s about creating environments where all students can access challenge and opportunity (Whitfield, Morgan. Gifted?: The Shift to Enrichment, Challenge and Equity).

At BIS Abu Dhabi, we embrace this philosophy from Primary through Senior School, ensuring every learner is empowered to grow, lead, and make a difference.

Expertise in Action, Beginning in Primary

Teachers nurture the whole child through openended tasks, flexible grouping, specialist teaching, and project-based learning. Talents are celebrated in multiple areas, from performances and art exhibitions to sports, coding, and leadership roles, building confidence and resilience. Primary students enjoy STEAM challenges, eco-projects, and early leadership opportunities that spark curiosity and creativity.

Student Voices

Our teachers personalise learning and provide safe spaces for ideas. Diana, Year 13, shares: “Senior School teachers ensure we have a range of lesson and study resources. I truly appreciate the open, safe environment where ideas can be shared and the ability to ask for individual guidance.”

Adithya, Year 11, reflects: “In every subject where I’ve excelled, the school has personalised my learning. In maths, I’m given IB-level problems. In science, I wrote an extended essay in Year 8 with my teacher’s guidance.”

Innovation Beyond the Classroom

Opportunities extend beyond the syllabus, from internships and competitions to eco-projects and STEAM challenges, connecting learning to life. Diana’s journey exemplifies this: her Year 10 work experience evolved into a four-month internship at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, collaborating with the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. She also won the MIT Nord Anglia STEM Innovation Competition, leading to a week at MIT in the US working with doctoral students.

Impact Through Voice and Leadership

From Primary TED-style talks and music performances to Secondary debate tournaments, Model United Nations, F1 in Schools, and STEM competitions, our students develop confidence, compassion, and collaboration skills. These experiences prepare them not only for academic success but for leadership in life.

A Culture of Challenge and Care

Gifted education at BIS Abu Dhabi is not a programme, it’s a culture where students are known personally, talents are celebrated, and challenge is balanced with support. Teachers foster curiosity and critical thinking, helping learners grow independently.

This is the BIS Abu Dhabi difference: a place where expertise meets empathy, innovation drives opportunity, and impact is measured in lives transformed, from our youngest learners to graduating Senior School leaders.

Finding Your Why: A BIS Abu Dhabi Approach to Student Wellbeing

Wellbeing is more than a state of mind, it is the foundation for success and personal growth. In today’s world, young people face increasing pressures, from academic expectations to social challenges and constant change. Helping students discover their “why”, the sense of purpose that drives resilience, confidence, and motivation, is central to creating a positive learning environment across both Primary and Secondary School.

Why Purpose Matters

Students today face challenges that can feel as demanding as a marathon: exams, friendships, rising expectations, and constant change. Whether they are in FS or Year 13, a clear sense of purpose helps them navigate these experiences with confidence and optimism.

Research shows that when students understand why they are doing something, they:

• Experience less stress during exam periods

• Show stronger resilience and motivation

• Feel more confident and capable

• Develop healthier wellbeing overall Purpose gives direction, it transforms obstacles into opportunities, and helps students see progress as part of a bigger picture.

Our Approach: Supporting Students to Find Their Why

We cannot give students their purpose, but we can create the conditions for them to discover it. At BIS Abu Dhabi, this means providing tools, environments, and relationships that encourage reflection and growth throughout every phase of their schooling.

Reflection and Self-Awareness

In Primary, reflection begins with simple, meaningful moments: class discussions, valuesled assemblies, and guided conversations that help younger children explore what they enjoy, what matters to them, and how they feel. In Secondary, students build on these foundations through tutor-time activities, assemblies, and classroom discussions that deepen their understanding of their goals, values, and motivations.

Skills for Life

Across all age groups, we teach practical skills that underpin wellbeing: emotional regulation, time

management, growth mindset, positive coping strategies, and problem-solving. These skills help students manage challenges with increasing independence and confidence.

Supportive Relationships and Belonging

Wellbeing thrives in a community where every child feels safe, known, and valued. In Primary, trust and belonging are central. In Secondary, our network of Mental Health First Aiders, tutors, teachers, and student leaders ensures every young person feels understood and supported. A strong sense of belonging, feeling “this is my place and these are my people”, is one of the most powerful drivers of purpose.

Opportunities to Lead and Contribute

From Primary helping roles to Secondary Ambassador positions, students take responsibility and make a difference. Initiatives like World Children’s Day, Anti-Bullying Week, and CAS cafés allow them to see the impact of their actions, strengthening purpose and pride.

Celebrating Progress

Our Achievement Moment Policy recognises effort, improvement, and positive behaviour. Celebrating growth reinforces motivation and strengthens wellbeing.

The Importance of Parents and Partnership

Purpose does not develop in school alone. Parents play a vital role in shaping children’s motivation, confidence, and sense of direction. Through conversations at home, encouragement, and consistent routines, parents help children understand their strengths and passions. When school and home work together, students flourish.

Practical Tips for Parents

Encourage your child to reflect on these questions:

• What motivates me?

• What helps me keep going when things get tough?

• What am I working toward? These simple questions work for all ages and help build purposeful thinking over time.

BIS Abu Dhabi Graduate Karolina Lipowska

What made BIS Abu Dhabi special for you?

BIS Abu Dhabi was a truly special experience for me. For the first time in my life, I could fully dedicate myself to my studies without juggling acting, filming, or gymnastics. That freedom gave me the space to grow both academically and creatively. I deeply valued the personal approach of every teacher. Their support created an environment where I felt safe to explore, express myself, and discover new interests.

The performing arts opportunities, especially the Juilliard collaboration, played a significant role in that journey. They provided access to world-class artistic guidance and inspired me to see the arts not just as a hobby, but as a genuine pathway for my future.

Who was your favourite teacher and why?

It might be a bit biased, but my theatre teacher, Miss O’Connor, was definitely one of my favourites. She believed in me, encouraged me, and created a space where I could take risks and grow creatively.

I also have to mention my math teacher, Miss Noor, for her patience and her incredibly individual approach to every student. My mind isn’t really built for mathematical principles, but she always made me feel supported and capable.

Which school club, activity, trip or project inspired you the most?

The theatre productions were the most inspiring part of my school experience. In Year 12, I joined the ensemble and focused primarily on the dance elements of the musical. I even had the chance to choreograph several pieces, which was an incredible opportunity to express creativity.

By Year 13, I stepped into the role of stage manager, a position that completely changed my perspective. That experience sparked my interest in production rather than performance and played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of my future studies.

What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at BIS Abu Dhabi?

The most valuable lesson I learned was to step outside my comfort zone and stay open to new opportunities. Through the arts programme and the productions I worked on, I discovered how much growth comes from embracing new roles, collaborating with others, and

Class of 2024

trusting myself creatively. These lessons continue to guide me today in the film and acting industries.

What ambitions did BIS Abu Dhabi inspire in you?

BIS Abu Dhabi encouraged me to view my creative interests as a professional pursuit. It pushed me to explore not only acting but also the production side of storytelling, giving me the confidence to aim higher and take my aspirations seriously.

Which university and degree did you choose, and why?

I am now studying Film Production at the Film Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague. After graduating from BIS Abu Dhabi, I took a gap year because I wasn’t entirely sure which direction to pursue. FAMU was always in the back of my mind, but I thought it would be impossible to get in, as they accept only about 15 students per year.

During my gap year, I discovered a year-long intensive Production Team Studies course at FAMU International. I applied, was accepted, and that experience gave me the confidence to apply to the main Czech FAMU programme, where I am now in my first year.

What has been your proudest moment since graduating?

My proudest moment has been getting accepted to FAMU. After doubting whether I would be good enough to apply, being accepted into both the international course and later the Czech programme showed me that taking risks and believing in myself can pay off in ways I never expected.

What are you doing now?

I’m currently in my first year of bachelor studies at FAMU, specialising in Film Production. Alongside my studies, I continue acting, I’m part of the longestrunning TV show in the Czech Republic.

Do you still use skills gained from Drama or Juilliard experiences in your current role?

Absolutely. The communication, collaboration, discipline, and creative thinking I developed in Drama and through the Juilliard experiences are skills I use every day, both in acting and in film production. Whether I’m on set or working behind the scenes, those foundations are still incredibly valuable.

10 YEARS. 1 VISION. ENDLESS CREATIVITY.
