Term 3 2024/2025
#17
We bid farewell to our Year 13s in a memorable last day and Graduation
Her Highness Sheikha Shamma Bint Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan officially opened our Eco Edventure
PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
BIS ABU DHABI TIMES
As I reflect on Term 3, I’m struck by just how much life and learning have been packed into these past weeks.
This term wasn’t just full: it was bursting with energy, creativity, connection, and achievement. From immersive learning experiences like Year 4s Ancient Egyptian Day and Secondary's La Feria de Abril to inspiring competitions such as the BSME Maths Challenge and the Quran Competition, every corner of the school felt alive with purpose and excitement.
We were honoured to welcome Her Highness Sheikha Shamma, who opened our Eco Edventure and inspired students with her message on sustainability, alongside other visitors such as Barry from 'Beat the Cyber Bully', who challenged us to think differently. We celebrated the incredible journeys of our Year 11s and graduating Year 13s, while also cherishing the confident performances in Grease, Primary’s Got Talent, and our much-loved Secondary Open Mic Finale.
Students stepped out into the world, whether on the ski slopes, on work experience, or deep in the heart of Tanzania, and stepped up as leaders, thinkers, and kind, curious individuals. Our younger learners brought joy to us all with showcases like Year 2s Plant Market
and Year 3s Hotel Expo, and across every year group, we saw students trying new things, deepening their understanding, and growing together.
This has also been a term of celebration: of Eid Al Adha, our wonderful ancillary staff, outstanding sports achievements, and the everyday moments that make this community so special. Our parent events - coffee mornings, speaker sessions, and community outingscontinue to remind me how strong and supportive our wider school family is. We were honoured to receive both a MENA and an ADEK Award this term, recognising the special partnership we have with our parent community.
Thank you, truly, to every student, staff member, and parent for being part of such a rich and meaningful term. As we look ahead to new beginnings next academic year, including the opening of our new Parent Café, Science Labs, and Inclusion Hub, I do so with pride, excitement, and deep gratitude.

Personalising Professional Learning
Empowering Educators the Way We Empower Students
At BIS Abu Dhabi, our commitment to personalised learning doesn’t stop with our students, it extends to our teachers too. Just as we strive to nurture each child’s learning journey by recognising individual needs and strengths, we believe the same philosophy should guide how we support the professional growth of our staff.
We have worked hard developing a new direction towards our professional learning programme that reflects the very best of our classroom practices. Rooted in the principles of the Great Teaching Toolkit -our shared standard of teaching excellence- we offer staff the opportunity to shape their own professional learning journeys in ways that are meaningful, flexible, and impactful.
From Choice Comes Empowerment
Staff can select from a diverse menu of learning opportunities designed to inspire, challenge, and develop practice. Whether through supported sessions focused on Encouraging Deep Thinking or Promoting Student Engagement, or through more independent pathways such as personal projects or study time for the Nord Anglia Masters or Leadership Programmes, each option is aligned with our core teaching values.
For those seeking to engage with broader school initiatives, we are also offering opportunities to learn more about the Inclusion Leadership Team, or to join action groups focused on areas such as metacognition, a vital aspect of helping students understand how they learn best.
Modelling the Best of Teaching
Our programme models the very best of what we aim to achieve in our classrooms: autonomy, relevance, support, and high expectations. By giving staff voice and choice in their development, we honour their expertise and encourage reflective, evidence-informed practice that translates directly into improved student outcomes.
Looking Ahead
We know that great teaching is the most important in-school factor in student success. That’s why we are deeply committed to empowering great teachers – through a sustained investment in professional growth that is as personalised, ambitious, and forward-thinking as the curriculum we offer our students. As we journey through Term 3 and beyond, this embedded approach to professional learning continues to strengthen our community of educators and, most importantly, enrich the learning of every child in our care.
Listening to Voices, Leading with Care
Our Ongoing Journey
At The British International School Abu Dhabi, student voice drives meaningful change. We’re proud of our wellbeing and safeguarding practices and continue working to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive. This term, feedback from students and parents has shaped decisions that matter. From expert partnerships to student-led initiatives, wellbeing is not just a goal – it’s part of who we are.
Learning from the Best
In May, our Safeguarding Team attended the BSME Safeguarding Conference, gaining insights from global leaders. A standout session by Alasdair Roy focused on empowering students in the digital world. We brought these ideas back to BIS Abu Dhabi and celebrated Safeguarding Awareness Week with assemblies and PSME sessions on online safety, led by our Heads of Ethos and supported by teachers.
Turning Feedback Into Action
Student and parent feedback has led to real change. We’ve introduced new wellbeing roles, adapted school spaces, and refined routines and curriculum content to better reflect student needs. These steps build a more connected, caring school culture.
Bathroom Safety
Secondary students raised concerns about bathroom safety. In response, we implemented a calm, staff-managed system and are planning updates to improve visibility and reduce overcrowding. Students have already noted improvements in safety and order.
Spaces to Recharge and Reconnect
Primary students requested indoor spaces to relax during hot days. We introduced an activity carousel with themes like mindfulness and board games. Looking ahead, we’re planning outdoor areas for Year 1 and chill-out zones for Secondary students to support “devices down at social times.”
PSME: A Curriculum That Connects
Students value PSME for its relevance and relationship-building. Based on parent feedback, we’re launching a refreshed curriculum in Term 1 with collaborative learning, new topics, and more student voice. The programme will be Future Ready, covering digital literacy, financial literacy, respectful relationships, and mental health.
Wellbeing at the Heart of Our Culture
Over 92% of students feel their wellbeing is taken seriously, and nearly all report feeling safe with trusted adults to turn to. We’ve introduced Mental Health First Aiders for every year group and are training older students as Mental Health Warriors through Mental Health England’s Peer Assisted Learners programme.
Student Voice in Action
The Student Heads Together team, led by Mrs. McGlue, continues to lead impactful wellbeing projects, promoting mental health awareness and inclusive activities. Their leadership is shaping a stronger, more supportive school environment.
A Whole-School Commitment
Every change this year reflects our belief that wellbeing is everyone’s responsibility. With support from families, experts, and student leaders, we’re building a culture where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to flourish. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Y12 TOK Exhibition
This term, our Year 12 IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) students presented their objects to parents, teachers, and fellow students at the TOK (Theory of Knowledge) Exhibition. The event was buzzing with excitement as students shared their chosen objects, each representing a personal exploration of key TOK themes such as knowledge, belief, and perspective.
TOK is a core component of the IBDP, encouraging students to question how we know what we know and understand the different ways of knowing and areas of knowledge. The exhibition allowed students to showcase their critical thinking and connect abstract ideas with real-world examples. It was a fantastic opportunity for both students and visitors to engage in lively discussions, as each object sparked curiosity and thought-provoking conversations about the nature of knowledge.
The atmosphere was electric, with students demonstrating impressive insight into their objects and the connections to broader TOK concepts, leaving everyone inspired by the depth and creativity on display.
Year 4 Ancient Egyptian Day
This term, Year 4 stepped back in time for an exciting Ancient Egyptian Day! The day began with an archaeology obstacle course where our students unearthed ancient artefacts, sparking curiosity and wonder. They then explored the fascinating digestive system through a live mummification demonstration - an unforgettable (and slightly squirmy!) learning experience.
To support their descriptive writing, the children spent part of the day living as both Pharaohs and Servants to understand life in Ancient Egypt from two very different perspectives. The Pharaohs created ornate headdresses, designed their own cartouches, and relaxed with fruit and juices. Meanwhile, the Servants worked hard making paper, building pyramids, and sampling stale bread!
Year 1 Celebrate Planet Earth Day
Planet Earth Day in Year 1 was a fantastic celebration of global learning, and we were delighted to see such strong support from our parent community. Families joined our young explorers on a journey across the seven continents, celebrating the rich diversity of our world.
From sculpting clay animals inspired by different regions to learning traditional weaving techniques from North America, the students immersed themselves in hands-on activities that brought their learning to life. They also explored maps, investigated global climates, and engaged in thoughtful conversations about the uniqueness of our planet.
This exciting topic has sparked a real passion for learning in our Year 1 classrooms. We’ve been so impressed by the students’ curiosity, creativity, and growing global awareness. A big thank you to everyone who made this such a memorable experience for our youngest learners!
World Book Day
For World Book Day 2025, BIS Abu Dhabi celebrated the power of stories to spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and connect us all. In Primary, ‘Once Upon a STEAM’ brought books to life through hands-on, cross-curricular challengesfrom designing rockets and lifeboats to coding hotels and creating monster-themed meals!
In Secondary, students embraced the theme ‘A Book Can Take You Anywhere’ with cosy home wear, quiet reading time, poetry, word hunts and deep discussions exploring empathy and culture. Across the school, our learners showed that stories don’t just entertain, they inspire us to think, feel and grow.
EYFS Splash Day
To celebrate the end of term, our Nursery and FS2s held a fun-filled Splash Day! From paddling pools to water squirters, buckets and more, the children had an absolute blast cooling off in the sunshine. Everyone got soaked - even the teachers - and the smiles said it all. One child summed it up perfectly: “It was the best day ever!”
Year 6 Progression
This term, our Year 6 students took part in a Progression Day. This fantastic experience allowed them to explore life in Secondary School through engaging lessons in Science, Design Technology, Art, Drama, Geography, Maths and English. These sessions aim to spark their curiosity and help prepare them for the next step in their educational journey.
Secondary Teachers were incredibly impressed by the students’ confidence, resilience and joy – not to mention their infectious personalities that lit up every classroom they entered. We truly can’t wait to welcome these wonderful students as our new Year 7 cohort in August!
Primary Progression Day
At the end of Term 3, our students got a glimpse of what lies ahead in the new academic year! EYFS to Year 5 enjoyed an exciting 'Get to know You' morning with their next year’s teacher. Everyone is excited and now well prepared for what’s to come!
Year 1 Fairytale Ball
To celebrate the end of a magical term, Year 1 held a wonderful Fairytale Ball! In preparation, the children crafted their own crowns and personalised placemats for the grand banquet. Dressed in their finest fairytale outfits, they paraded through the corridors to cheers and applause from the other year groups. Back in class, they tested their knowledge from Term 3 with a fun game of Kahoot! The celebrations continued with a banquet in the main hall, where they enjoyed music, delicious food, and time with their friends. They ended the day with a lively game of bingo and danced the afternoon away. A truly enchanting experience for all!
Year 2 Plant Market
Taste of Africa in FS2
Our FS2 young explorers embarked on a sensory journey through Africa! From tasting ugali and tropical fruits to feeling sugar cane in their hands, the children embraced every new flavour and texture with curiosity and excitement. A big thank you to Ms. Joy for sharing her culture, and these wonderful treats with us!
This term, our talented Year 2 students wowed us all as they hosted an exciting Plant Market, transforming their learning into a real-world experience! Parents were warmly welcomed as children proudly showcased their skills across maths, science and art. From beautifully handcrafted products to homegrown plants, everything on offer was created by the children themselves.
They didn’t just stop at making - they sold their products too! Using their maths skills, students calculated prices, added totals and gave change with confidence and accuracy. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to apply classroom learning in a fun and meaningful way.
Thank you to all the families who came out to support our young entrepreneurs - what a brilliant morning of learning, creativity, and community!
Year 7 F1 Project in Design & Technology
Our Year 7 students completed their latest Design and Technology project this term – and what a success it was! Building on their knowledge of workshop safety, hand tools, and machine use, students designed and created their own racing cars. The project ended in an exciting race to crown the fastest car in each class.
It was a fantastic opportunity to put practical skills into action, and we’re proud to see some future engineers already taking shape. Well done, Year 7!
Reimagining Fairytales with Year 1
Early in the term, our Year 1 students launched their unit Innovation within Fairytales, perfectly timed with UN World Creativity and Innovation Day and World Book Day. Inspired by a recent visit from Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, they reimagined classic stories through the lenses of sustainability, female empowerment, and UAE heritage.
Year 8 Explore A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Eid al Adha Celebrations
Students marked Eid al Adha with engaging activities that deepened their understanding of Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. Through hands-on learning, students explored the spiritual and historical significance of the pilgrimage. They created informative displays, engaged in discussions, and even modeled key rituals of the Hajj, such as Tawaf around a symbolic Kaaba and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. These activities provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with the values of patience, unity, and devotion that Hajj represents, while fostering respect for different cultures and religious practices.
This term, in Mrs. Ariss’s Year 8 English class, students worked collaboratively on a character study based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The project provided a fun and engaging way for students to explore the play, bringing its characters to life through creative mediums and group discussion.
Year 3 Hotel Expo
Year 3 proudly hosted their Hotel Expo this term, sharing incredible final projects with parents in a vibrant and interactive showcase. The children unveiled their own designs for a hotel just for children – the result of a rich, creative cross-curricular learning journey. Over the term, students explored hotel design by researching some of the UAE’s most iconic hotels, learning about famous architects like Zaha Hadid and Antoni Gaudí, and using elements of their unique styles to inspire their sketches.
They brought their visions to life digitally using Tinkercad and Minecraft Education, demonstrating fantastic ICT and design skills. To top it off, students wrote persuasive adverts to promote their hotels, applying techniques they’d mastered in English lessons and publishing their work on Canva. The standard of work was outstanding, and the creativity and innovation on display were inspiring. Parents were truly impressed, and the children were proud to present their learning. It was a brilliant way to end the year, a celebration of imagination, effort, and achievement!
Year 6 MFL Festival
Our Year 6 students embarked on an exciting linguistic and cultural journey during our very first Language Festival!
Organised by Mademoiselle Merchadier and the MFL Primary team, with brilliant support from some of our Year 9 & 12 students, the festival was a vibrant celebration of French, Spanish, and German languages and cultures.
From interactive activities to cultural discoveries, and even special Language Festival passports, students explored global connections, including links to Arabic and UAE culture.
It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm for learning languages and embracing diversity.
Year 13 Last Day of School Celebrations
The final day of school for our Year 13 students was filled with emotion, celebration and well-deserved recognition. From a nostalgic coffee morning with parents to laughter-filled assemblies, heartfelt speeches and the joyous chaos of a corridor clap-out, it was a fitting farewell for a truly memorable cohort. Students were honoured with awards that reflected their growth, character and achievements - both in and out of the classroom. They also took time to pass on messages of encouragement to our youngest learners (FS2s, the future Class of 2038!) and share a final lunch with the teachers who’ve supported them every step of the way. We wish the Class of 2025 all the success and happiness the world has to offer. You’ve left your mark - and we couldn’t be prouder!
Year 13 Graduation
On 22nd May, BIS Abu Dhabi proudly celebrated the graduation of our incredible Class of 2025. This special event brought together students, families, and staff to celebrate a milestone that was years in the making, one filled with dedication, friendships, and unforgettable memories.
The school auditorium was filled with pride and excitement as the ceremony unfolded. Graduates from two academic pathways were recognised this year: students from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the very first cohort of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business.
The event began with a warm welcome from our Head of Secondary, Mrs. Áine McGlue. Diplomas were awarded one by one, each marking not just academic success, but personal growth, resilience, and the culmination of a unique BIS Abu Dhabi journey.
Among this year’s cohort were 10 students who began their learning journey with us in EYFS, affectionately known as our ‘BISAD Babies’. Their graduation symbolised the deep-rooted connection many students and families have with our school, and the strong sense of belonging that defines BIS Abu Dhabi.
The ceremony also featured a heartfelt speech by graduate Tia Mathew, who brought laughter and emotion in equal measure, capturing the spirit, friendships, and memories of the Class of 2025. Our Principal, Mr. Alan Cocker, concluded the event with sincere and thoughtful reflections on the achievements of the cohort and their exciting futures ahead.
Following the formal ceremony, celebrations continued in The Hub and the Senior Academy, where graduates, their families, and teachers enjoyed refreshments, captured memories, and spent time together reflecting on an unforgettable journey.
Congratulations to the Class of 2025. Your journey has been inspiring, and we can’t wait to see how you shape the future.
Quran Competition
Year 2 Mini Olympics
Year 2s enjoyed a fun-filled Mini Olympics day this term. The event began with a buzzing opening ceremony where children sang, paraded with the Olympic torch, and took the Mini Olympics oath. They then rotated through exciting games they had designed as part of their STEAM projects. It was wonderful to see their teamwork, creativity, and sportsmanship as they explained their games and cheered each other on. The day ended with a lively closing ceremony, Willow crowned the winning house, and sports stars awarded certificates - a true celebration of fun and Olympic spirit!
This term, the halls of BIS Abu Dhabi were filled with spiritual energy and unity as around 85 students from four Nord Anglia Education schools across the UAE gathered for the highly anticipated External Quran Competition. Students from Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, and our students from BIS Abu Dhabi came together to showcase their dedication to the Holy Quran in a day full of reflection, inspiration, and harmony.
Guided by eight esteemed judges and overseen by a respected general judge and preacher from Al Awqaf UAE, the event was not about winners or losers, every participant emerged victorious, gaining not just blessings but also building new friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime.
This special occasion highlighted the spiritual and cultural richness within our schools, fostering a deep appreciation for the Quran and bringing together young hearts in a beautiful expression of faith, respect, and shared purpose.
A Visit from GirlBoss Founder Alexia Hilbertidou
Year 10 girls had a fantastic opportunity to attend a motivational talk with Alexia Hilbertidou, founder of GirlBoss New Zealand. Known for her passion for empowering young women, Alexia delivered an inspiring and memorable session.
Through an engaging and interactive talk, she shared her journey from a visionary teenager to one of New Zealand’s most influential young entrepreneurs. She spoke openly about challenges, lessons learned, and the determination that drove her success.
With warmth and humour, Alexia encouraged the girls to reflect, participate, and believe in themselves. Her powerful message - aim high and don’t let others define your limits - left the students feeling inspired and confident. We’re grateful to Alexia for reminding our girls that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Thinking About Thinking: A Whole-School Focus on Metacognition
Our whole-school professional learning meeting brought Primary and Secondary staff together for an Introduction to Metacognition. The session was led by Aaron Regan and Amy Coote, our Primary and Secondary Metacognition Leads.
Staff had the chance to actively participate using thinking routines, which led to engaging and meaningful discussions about how we are embedding the Learner Ambitions (Creative, Collaborative, Critical Thinking, Compassionate, Curious and Committed) within our curriculum areas. We explored why metacognition is such a powerful tool through educational research, how Nord Anglia is leading the way through its own research projects, and what our next steps as a school will be to embed this approach meaningfully and consistently across all areas of BIS Abu Dhabi life.
Staff left the session armed with knowledge and practical ideas to help them incorporate thinking routines into their lessons and further develop this term’s Learner Ambition: Curious!
Headteacher's Commendation Award
Celebrating BIS Abu Dhabi Brilliance
The BIS Abu Dhabi Chess Team continues to excel in local and international tournaments. Recently, our students competed in the Nord Anglia Global Championships against over 30 top schools worldwide. After a strong performance, they placed second overall in the team category — a fantastic achievement!
Congratulations to Aadi (Year 10), Dhairya (Year 9), Henry (Year 12), and Seb (Year 12). Dhairya also finished third individually out of hundreds of players.
The team received a Headteacher’s Commendation Award and a certificate from Mrs. Aine McGlue, Head of Secondary. We’re proud of our chess champions and hope their success inspires others to join!
We are incredibly proud of Nayonika, Year 9, for her outstanding artistic achievement. Her photograph was selected as one of the top 20 finalists in the Voices of UAE art competition, chosen from over 400 submissions from students across the country. Her work, reflecting the theme “Discover the History of UAE Through the Lens of Its Youth,” is currently showcased at the Cross Borders Art Gallery in Dubai, celebrating the cultural insight and creativity of young artists.
Amer, Year 7, has shown impressive academic growth this year, especially in English, Maths, and Arabic, and is recognised by his teachers for his maturity, motivation, and positive attitude.
Beyond the classroom, Amer continues to shine in football. He took part in the PSG Academy World Cup in Paris, where his performance caught the attention of PSG’s senior coaching staff. He is now being considered for a potential opportunity within the PSG pre-academy pathway in France. This year, he was also scouted by the UAE National Team and Al Jazira Club and invited to a 10-day trial at Aspire Academy in Doha this September.
Amer’s journey is a wonderful example of dedication, humility, and talent. We are proud to celebrate him as part of our BIS Abu Dhabi community.
A dedicated BTEC Sport student in Year 12, Griffen consistently produces high-quality, thoughtful work that explores the sporting world with creativity and insight. A recent highlight was his innovative proposal for the use of AI technology in football refereeing - a smart, well-reasoned idea linking wearable tech to improve offside decisions and enhance the spectator experience.
Griffen’s impact goes far beyond academics. He gives his time generously, volunteering with Copa Academy and Maestro Football, and supports school events such as Open Evenings where he offers empathetic, helpful advice to prospective students. His honest reflections and encouragement have even helped other students decide to follow the BTEC pathway.
Kind, humble, and always ready to support others, Griffen truly embodies the values we celebrate at BIS Abu Dhabi. We’re proud to recognise his achievements and character through this award.
We’re thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of our BIS Abu Dhabi students in the 2025 Nord Anglia Virtual Young Musician Competition!

This year’s event saw an impressive number of entries from BIS Abu Dhabi alone. After a competitive first round of auditions judged internally, successful participants advanced to the global stage, where their performances were evaluated by industry professionals and teachers worldwide.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to even greater success in next year’s competition!

To end Term 3, our Year 10 students embarked on their work experience journey across Abu Dhabi and the UAE. From schools to businesses, hospitals to garages, hotels to offices, our students were immersed in real-world environments, gaining invaluable insights into various industries.
We are thrilled to report that our students received commendations for their exemplary attitude and effort. Employers were impressed by their professionalism and dedication, noting the fantastic impressions they made during their time in the workplace.
One notable aspect of this experience is the diligence with which our students tracked their progress. Their work experience diaries were filled with reflections and observations, showcasing their commitment to learning and growth.
To our Year 10 students, we commend you for your hard work and enthusiasm throughout your work experience week. Your dedication serves as a shining example for your peers, and we look forward to seeing the impact of your experiences as you continue your educational journey.
Our Students Make a Difference in Tanzania
During Spring Break, 39 students from Year 10 travelled to Arusha, Tanzania, for a memorable service trip. Joined by staff and students from two other Nord Anglia schools in Guangzhou, the group took part in a number of impactful community projects.
Throughout the week, students worked hard to build goat sheds and install solar panels and smokeless stoves for local families, helping to create sustainable sources of income and improve living conditions. They also constructed classrooms at a local school, opening the doors of education to over 200 children for the very first time.
We couldn’t be prouder of our students’ dedication, compassion, and thoughtful reflections during the trip. We’re excited to see how this experience continues to shape their perspectives and actions in the future.
Year 12 BTEC Sport Students
Visit Al Wahda FC
Our Year 12 BTEC in Sport students had an unforgettable experience visiting Al Nahyan Stadium, home of Al Wahda Football Club! A huge thank you to the club’s Technical Director, Liam Weekes, who generously hosted the visit and gave our students valuable insight into the inner workings of a professional football club. From training structures to player development pathways and behind-the-scenes operations, it was a brilliant opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world sport industry practice.
Beyond the Classroom
Year 12 Spanish celebrate 'La Feria de Abril'
This term, Year 12 Spanish organised activities in preparation for the celebration of La Feria de Abril in Spain. As part of the festivities, students explored the vibrant traditions of this iconic Spanish fair, including flamenco dancing, traditional music, colourful decorations, and delicious cuisine. One highlight was an interactive presentation delivered by the Spanish IB students to the Ab Initio students, which included the history of the fair, cultural insights, and games designed to reinforce key language concepts in an engaging way. The week culminated in a joyful celebration with all Year 12 Spanish students coming together to enjoy traditional dishes such as gazpacho, tortilla española, and arroz con leche, generously contributed by students from each class.

FS2 Visit Umm Al Emarat Park!
FS2 had an exciting day out at Umm Al Emarat Park! The children were thrilled to visit the park, where they had the chance to see and feed a variety of animals, including rabbits, tortoises, and even a camel.
The fun didn’t stop there! The children splashed around in the fountains, enjoying the cool water on a sunny day. After working up an appetite, they sat down to enjoy a picnic lunch with their friends. The playground was another highlight, where the children had a great time playing and exploring. To top off the perfect day, everyone got to enjoy a delicious ice cream before heading back to school. It was a wonderful trip, and the children returned with big smiles and lots of stories to tell!
Nursery Visits the Principal
As a wonderful way to conclude our topic People Who Help Us, the Nursery children had the exciting opportunity to visit a very special and important member of our school community - our Principal, Mr. Cocker.
The children were warmly welcomed into his office, where they learned all about the important role he plays in helping and supporting everyone at our school. They were curious and enthusiastic, asking thoughtful questions such as “What do you do?”, “What do you eat?”, and even “What colour are your sofas at home?”
Mr Cocker kindly answered all their questions, explaining how he looks after the children, keeps everyone safe, and manages many important tasks every day. Before leaving, the Nursery children and staff made sure to thank Mr. Cocker for all that he does for our school and families.
Beat the Cyber Bully
We kicked off the term with an engaging and eye-opening session led by Barry from Beat the Cyber Bully, proudly sponsored by Du. Year 8 and 9 students took part in this important digital wellbeing workshop, exploring key topics such as their ‘digital tattoo’, the power of spreading positivity online, and the science behind clickbait.
Students also learned about the UAE’s laws around online behaviour and how to keep their identity safe in the digital world. The session highlighted how to use personal data online to strengthen future university and job applications, and offered clear guidance on how to report concerns both in and out of school.
A powerful and timely reminder of the importance of being responsible, respectful, and safe in our online spaces.
Incredible Innovation at UAE Hackathon!
A huge congratulations to Ahmed in Year 6, who has achieved an incredible result in the UAE Hackathon – the nation’s largest innovation competition! Competing independently while most others entered as school teams, Ahmed impressed judges with his brilliant project: a firefighting drone designed to tackle fires safely and efficiently.
Now in its 8th edition, the UAE Hackathon brings together the brightest young minds to develop tech solutions around AI, sustainability, cybersecurity, and more. Ahmed’s creativity, hard work, and initiative truly stood out - earning him 2nd place in the Rising Stars Track! We’re so proud of you, Ahmed – congratulations!
Safeguarding Awareness Week
BIS Abu Dhabi took part in Safeguarding Awareness Week this term, and our children were fantastic participants! Throughout the week, they joined in assemblies and hands-on activities focused on staying safe online. From exploring the importance of internet safety to learning how to protect themselves in the digital world, there was plenty of valuable discussion and discovery.
Our Key Stage 2 students spent time reflecting on their digital footprint and how they can demonstrate our school values, kindness and respect, in their online interactions.
To help everyone remember the key messages, we introduced the SMART acronym, a simple and effective way for children to keep online safety front of mind.
We’re proud of how thoughtfully our children engaged with these important topics!
Her Highness Sheikha Shamma inaugurated our Eco Edventure
In Term 3, we had the distinct honour of welcoming Her Highness Sheikha Shamma Bint Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan to BIS Abu Dhabi. A leading voice in climate action and President of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) and The Climate Tribe, Her Highness spent the morning connecting with students across the school and sharing her vision for a more sustainable future.
During her visit, Her Highness officially opened the Eco Edventure, engaged in a powerful discussion with our Secondary students about the role of youth in driving climate action, and toured a showcase of student-led sustainability projects. She also joined a Year 1 class for a special storytelling session in the Primary Library, exploring themes of nature, community, and environmental care.
It was a memorable day that highlighted our ongoing commitment to developing globally minded, environmentally conscious students - starting from the very earliest years. We are proud to continue embedding sustainability into everyday learning and creating opportunities for our students to lead meaningful change.
Earth Day
For Earth Day 2025, our students spent the day learning about the significance of Earth Day and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In Early Years, children used natural materials to create artistic representations of the Earth. Primary students considered their everyday actions and discussed simple ways they can contribute to a healthier planet. In Secondary, students looked at this year’s theme of ‘Our Planet, Our Power’ with a focus on the importance of renewable energy & clean energy.
We hope that our students take Earth Day as a catalyst to make our Earth more clean, renewable and better for all.
World Scholars Cup, Doha
From June 12–17, 2025, a group of our brilliant students took part in the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, an international academic event celebrating debate, collaboration, and critical thinking across six diverse subjects.
Not only did they represent our school with excellence, integrity, and team spirit, but they also returned home decorated with gold and silver medals in both individual and team events!
A special congratulations to the six qualifying teams who will be heading to Yale University later this year for the Tournament of Champions. Your achievements have made us proud!
Year 12 SEHS Trip
Our IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) students had a fantastic opportunity to visit Wolfie’s High Performance Centre this term. The trip began with a presentation on the biomechanics of cycling and how equipment impacts performance.
Students observed a live VO2 max test, analysed the data, and discussed its implications. They also learned about sports nutrition, tried compression garments for recovery, and experienced cold water therapy in a professional pool.
The welcoming and passionate staff created a highly engaging, educational day. Our students were curious, respectful, and enthusiastic throughout this memorable, hands-on experience.
Abu Dhabi Police Visit – Child Protection Assembly
This term, we were pleased to welcome a representative from the Abu Dhabi Police Child Protection Unit, who delivered an important assembly to our secondary students. The session focused on digital safety, both in school and online, as well as bullying prevention and responsible behaviour in digital spaces.
Students had the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session, where they shared concerns and received valuable guidance. The officers also emphasised the importance of student responsibility, including the inappropriate use of images and videos, the need to show respect to others, and the potential consequences of certain behaviours.
As part of the assembly, we also reinforced our school behaviour policy, which always prioritises education first, while ensuring there are clear and consistent consequences for actions that do not align with our expectations.
It was a powerful and engaging session that supported our ongoing commitment to safeguarding and promoting respectful relationships both in person and online.
A Visit to the National Library & Archives
A group of UAE Leaders students, guided by our Social Studies Department, took part in an educational visit to the National Library & Archives to strengthen national identity and deepen historical awareness.
Students toured the library, viewing rare manuscripts and documents that highlight key milestones in the UAE’s history. They explored an exhibit on the Sheikh Zayed Awards and attended an interactive lecture on Emirati "Sana’a" traditions. A documentary brought the nation’s history to life.
The visit also included recreational activities and a VR simulation of UAE Vision 2071, helping students connect with their heritage and the country’s future ambitions.
Tanzania Day
Our school community came together this term in vibrant colours and high spirits to celebrate Tanzania Day – and what a day it was! Students dressed in blue, black, yellow, and green, raising funds in support of the incredible work being done by Seeway and Umoja.
Throughout the day, students enjoyed a range of exciting activities, including Pie the Teacher, Wet Sponge Throw, Face Painting, a Bake Sale, and Bracelet Sales, all while learning about the importance of global citizenship and giving back.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our efforts, from the parents who donated delicious cakes and generously contributed raffle prizes (including hotel stays, signed memorabilia, and local goodies), to those who purchased raffle tickets and made generous donations so their children could enjoy all the fun activities on offer.
Together with the Banzania Rock Concert initiative held earlier this year, we are thrilled to share that we raised an incredible total of almost 45,000 AED in support of our Tanzania partnership projects.
Thanks to your enthusiasm and kindness, Tanzania Day was not only packed with fun but also served as a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together for a great cause.
Arabic Week
We proudly celebrated Arabic Language Week at BIS Abu Dhabi this term!
Arabic B students from all year groups took part in a range of fun and meaningful language activities. They joined exciting competitions like the Language Live challenge, one-minute presentations, and the Talk Arabic for One Minute challenge, building their confidence and creativity in using Arabic.
As part of a student-led learning experience, our Secondary students from Years 7 to 10 took the lead in delivering engaging Arabic sessions to younger learners. These included memory games, conversation starters, and cultural activities that celebrated Emirati identity and language.
A special highlight was The Arabic Performance by students in Years 2, 3, 5, and 6. They impressed the audience with joyful songs and an engaging short play by Year 6 that promoted healthy habits through a fun and colorful theme about fruits. It was a fantastic week full of energy, teamwork, and love for the Arabic language!
Swiss Ski Trip
At the end of Term 2, we took 47 Year 8 and 9 students on an unforgettable skiing trip to Verbier, Switzerland.
For many, it was their first time on the slopes, and by the end of the week, every student had gained confidence and made impressive progress in their skiing ability, supported by our amazing and encouraging instructors. The week wasn’t just about skiing - students also took part in a range of exciting activities including reaching the breathtaking summit of Mount Fort, trying out virtual reality experiences, swimming, creating a fun and lively music video, and enjoying a magical night walk under the stars. The trip was not only a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills but also a chance to build friendships, resilience, and lasting memories.

Celebrating the Men in Our Lives
This term, our Early Years Department was buzzing with joy as we opened our doors to celebrate the special men in our children’s lives. Laughter and love filled the classrooms as our little learners welcomed their dads, and other important male figures, into their world of play. From imaginative play and creative crafts to biscuit decorating, it was a heartwarming celebration of connection, learning, and togetherness.
Ancillary Staff Luncheon
Our Parent Community Group organised a special lunch to express our appreciation for the tireless dedication of our ancillary staff, who play such an important role in caring for our school and supporting our students throughout the year.
We are deeply grateful to the many parents who contributed by donating used uniforms, supporting the second-hand uniform and book sales, and volunteering at the snack shop during events. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to give back to our support staff with a lovely lunch and individual thank-you envelopes.
A special thank you also goes to the FS2 team and students for their delightful performance during the celebration. Their songs and dances were a touching tribute to those who help keep our school safe, clean, and well maintained. It was heartwarming to see our youngest students express such genuine appreciation.
To our cleaners, security team, maintenance staff, pool technicians, lifeguards, bus drivers, and bus monitors - thank you! Your hard work, care, and commitment mean so much to the entire BIS Abu Dhabi community.

With brushes in hand and inspiration flowing, parents embraced the opportunity to unwind, connect with others, and explore their artistic side. The peaceful atmosphere, paired with tea, pastries, and great conversation, made for a truly enjoyable session. A big thank you to everyone who joined us, we loved seeing your unique creations and hope you walked away with both a beautiful tote and a sense of creative fulfilment!
Award Winning for Parent Engagement
We are proud to share that our school has recently received two prestigious awards: the MENA Parent Partnership Award and the ADEK Best Parent Engagement Award.
These accolades reflect the community spirit our parents demonstrate and the culture we have built together - one that values strong, trusting relationships between school and home. While no school journey is without its challenges, these awards acknowledge the clear focus we place on working collaboratively as a community. Educational research is clear: when schools and parents work in partnership, communicate openly, and support one another, students thrive.
As part of the ADEK Award, we also received a prize of AED 100,000 to be invested in school improvements. We are exploring initiatives that will bring the greatest benefit to our students and families and further enrich the school experience.

Thank you, Alberto, we’re very grateful for generously sharing your time and expertise.
Big Issue Speaker: Priya Mitchell
Safeguarding Parent Workshop
We were delighted to welcome Priya Mitchell, a leading expert in safeguarding and digital wellbeing, to our school for a special workshop aimed at helping parents safeguard their children in today’s fast-moving digital world.
In an engaging and thought-provoking session, Priya spoke about the many opportunities the internet provides for learning, connection and creativity, but also highlighted the very real risks that young people may face. These include exposure to inappropriate content, online bullying, excessive screen time, and the pressures of social media.
Throughout the workshop, Priya offered practical advice, clear guidance and simple strategies that families can put in place at home to help protect their children. She emphasised the importance of open communication, setting boundaries, and building children’s resilience so they can make safe and informed choices online.
The session was both informative and reassuring, with parents not only learning new strategies but also learning from and sharing their own valuable insights on how to manage online safety as a family.
Open Mic Finale
Many of our musicians took part in the Open Mic Finale evening, an exciting event that showcased a diverse collaboration of musical styles and ensembles, ranging from Coldplay covers to classical piano and everything in between. The evening featured performances from the orchestra, rock bands, staff band, vocal ensembles, choir, student-teacher collaborations, and a number of exceptionally talented soloists.
All of the students who performed have shown a consistent dedication to musical activities, with many regularly participating in our weekly Open Mic Lunchtime Sessions. We were incredibly proud of their passion, commitment, and the strong sense of teamwork that was evident throughout the night. It was a truly wonderful evening, filled with remarkable talent and inspiring performances!

Highlights included the Orchestral Ensemble’s Forrest Gump and My Heart Will Go On, solos on piano, guitar, saxophone, and violin, and choir favourites, including Both Sides Now with British Sign Language. The concert closed with Proud of You, featuring soloists, a chorus in Arabic, and signing by Year 6 students, celebrating our diversity and inclusion. Thank you to everyone who made it a success!
Year 5 Music Showcase
Year 5 recently wowed audiences with their Music Showcase, taking everyone on an inspiring journey through the first moon landing, the Space Race, and modern space exploration.
With beautifully sung songs and confident performances, every child had their moment to shine - many for the very first time on stage. A true celebration of inclusion, confidence, and teamwork.
Juilliard Music Curriculum Specialist Visit
This term, we were thrilled to welcome Andrea Lee, a Juilliard Music Curriculum Specialist from The Juilliard School. Andrea led exciting demonstration lessons across Primary and Secondary.
One of the standout moments of the visit was the Strings Performance and Masterclass. Andrea captivated students with live performances of Prelude by Bach and The Swan by Saint-Saëns, before working with two of our talented violinists – Yichen (Year 6) and Sari (Year 10). Our GCSE students also gained new insights into string techniques and are now eager to apply them in their own compositions. It was a memorable celebration of creativity, collaboration, and world-class music education!
Primary Singing CCA Showcase
Our talented Primary Singing CCA children put on a spectacular show for their families, showcasing their hard work, energy, and passion for music. Despite having limited rehearsal time, the children rose to the challenge and delivered a series of fantastic solo and group performances that wowed the audience. A huge well done to all involved - your dedication and enthusiasm truly shone on stage!
Nord Anglia Performing Arts Festival
In June, a group of our passionate performers joined over 140 students from Nord Anglia schools across the region for an unforgettable experience at the NAE Performing Arts Festival, hosted at NAS Abu Dhabi.
Over three vibrant days, our students:
• Trained with industry professionals from London’s West End, including artists from Wicked, Mamma Mia, Chicago and more!
• Took part in high-energy workshops in singing, acting, dancing, and orchestra.
• Made new friends from other Nord Anglia schools and collaborated in creative, confidence-building sessions.
• Performed in an incredible final showcase – and they absolutely lit up the stage!
This event wasn’t just about performance; it was about growth, teamwork, and unforgettable memories. A big well done to all our students who embraced this challenge with enthusiasm and joy.
Primary ’s Got Talent
Talent can usually be found in our school in every classroom, but on Tuesday in the last week of term, talent took over the auditorium! The stage was graced by some incredible acts, from magic to music and everything in between. Our show began with last year's winners performing a Coldplay classic. They then took to their seats to judge the new school of talent, who were up next to grace the stage. Judges cha-cha slid to their seats and were dazzled by a variety of showstopping stars. Gymnasts, dancers, singers and magicians put on a show that the West End would be proud of. A huge thank you to all of those who enabled this to happen, from backstage to frontstage and everyone in between. The school community came together to enjoy the perfect end to the school year. Well done to everyone who took part, thank you to everyone who came to watch, and good luck to those of you who wish to take part next year. The time to prepare starts now!
Little Stars Drama Performance
This term, our Little Stars from Years 2 and 3, performed to FS2 children on our new Eco Edventure stage. They acted out three enchanting performances of the children’s favourite stories The Gruffalo, Monkey Puzzle and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The Little Stars CCA have been working on bringing these stories to life through drama and they worked hard to learn their lines, stage directions, and actions.
The children from FS2 and their teachers loved the stories and it was lovely to see the happiness on their little faces. Their performances were a wonderful ending to a successful year for the Little Stars. We hope to return next year with some more spectacular performances.
Year 3 to 6 Dance Assessment
Year 3 to 6 students marked the end of their dance unit in PE by performing their final pieces on stage in the auditorium as part of their assessments. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the skills and creativity they developed over the term. Year 3 fully embraced the highenergy Lindy Hop, performing with enthusiasm and rhythm. Year 4 combined a set routine with their own choreography, inspired by the Texas
Kangaroo Rat. Year 5 explored patterns, symmetry, and visual effects through an abstract dance inspired by a kaleidoscope, while Year 6 took on contact choreography, creating fluid routines that highlighted trust, control, and connection.
It has been a joy to see each year group grow in confidence and creativity, and we are incredibly proud of their effort throughout this unit.
Grease The Musical
At the end of Term 3, our talented students from Years 7 to 12 lit up the stage with their dazzling production of Grease, bringing Rydell High to life in true 1950s style!
With two phenomenal casts, high-energy performances, and unforgettable musical moments, they wowed audiences and made the whole BIS Abu Dhabi community proud.
This production would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our teachers, staff, backstage crew and band, with special thanks to our ever-supportive parents.
Congratulations to everyone involved in another hugely successful production!
Breaking Barriers in Rugby
At BIS Abu Dhabi, we take pride in recognising students who not only pursue excellence but also challenge limits, show resilience, and inspire others along the way. This term, two of our standout athletes, Tiffany (Year 8) and London (Year 9), have done exactly that, making their mark both at home and on the international stage.
Whether it's stepping into new environments, competing against top-level players, or earning prestigious individual honours, both Tiffany and London have shown what it means to stay disciplined, set goals, and lead with humility and heart.
Tiffany | Breaking Barriers in Rugby
Tiffany, a standout athlete at BIS Abu Dhabi, has been named the Overall Best Female Player of the Season 2024/25 by the Small Blacks Rugby Club, one of the UAE’s top youth rugby accolades. Known for her leadership and determination, she captained the U14 Girls Quick Rip team while also making waves in the U13 Boys’ Contact league, where she was the only girl selected to play in the finals.
Her passion and resilience were on full display during the Al Ain Tournament, where she played nine games across both leagues, including semi-finals and finals. Her tackling skills drew widespread praise and cemented her reputation as a rising talent in the sport.
Tiffany’s rugby journey is now reaching international heights. She has been invited to train with the U16 Girls Academy at Empire Rugby in Dubai and will soon travel to New Zealand for an elite athletic training programme. With her eyes set on growth and opportunity, Tiffany is eager to learn from the best in a country known for its rugby legacy.
She encourages younger students, especially girls, to give rugby a try: “You never know, you may end up loving it.”
London | A Rising Talent
Year 9 student London recently returned from Treviso, Italy, where he proudly represented the Emirates Falcons Rugby Team in the prestigious Città di Treviso tournament - the largest youth rugby competition in the country. Selected from a highly competitive pool of players across the UAE, London helped lead his team to an impressive 4th place finish out of 40 teams, remaining undefeated until a narrow loss by penalty kick in the 3rd/4th playoff.
Earlier this year, London was named U14s Player of the Year at Harlequins Rugby Club, an honour earned among a group of 40 talented players. Competing internationally pushed London beyond his comfort zone, exposing him to new playing styles and challenges while allowing him to showcase his abilities on a broader stage. Behind the scenes, his success is the result of relentless effort and commitment - balancing a demanding training schedule with academics through a disciplined daily routine that starts at 4:45am.
London credits the unwavering support of his parents, coaches, friends, and teammates as key to his growth. His message to aspiring athletes is, "Set goals, stay committed, and surround yourself with those who support your vision".
Inspiring the Next Generation
Tiffany and London’s stories are not just about athletic excellence, they reflect the power of passion, perseverance, and purpose. From rugby pitches in Abu Dhabi to international arenas, they continue to lead by example, breaking boundaries and inspiring others to do the same. We are incredibly proud to support them both on their journeys and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
A Week of Movement and Inspiration with
Juilliard’s Helen Tocci
We had the incredible opportunity to welcome Helen Tocci, our Dance Specialist from The Juilliard School! Our Year 6 girls engaged in a dynamic lesson focused on moving over, around, and through various spaces taught by Helen herself. Meanwhile, our Year 5 girls kicked off their unit on kaleidoscopes, exploring repetitive patterns.
In Year 1, students delved into a dance inspired by Sleeping Beauty, while Year 9 showcased their hip-hop skills, experimenting with pausing, slowing down, speeding up, and reversing movements. Year 3 and 4 students worked on holding balances for counts of 8 before moving into a new shape, allowing them to create a sequence.
To top it all off, Helen led a PE staff meeting, sharing insights on how to incorporate Juilliard techniques into our dance lesson sequences. It was a week filled with creativity and inspiration!
KS2
Stay
Active with the Manchester City Healthy Lifestyle Programme
This term, our KS2 (Years 3-6) students had an exciting experience as they took part in the Manchester City Healthy Lifestyles Programme!
During the practical session, students took part in a variety of fun games, including Dodging the Bib and a reaction game designed to test their speed, focus, and agility. They also had the opportunity to develop essential football skills - learning to kick the ball using different parts of their foot, mastering the Mary Fowler Drag Back, and performing the Phil Foden Slice.
In the classroom session, students explored key concepts around health and well-being. They discussed the importance of regular exercise, balanced nutrition, hydration, sleep, and maintaining a positive mindset. With interactive activities and thought-provoking discussions, the session encouraged them to reflect on their own habits and set goals for staying healthy and active. The Manchester City Healthy Schools Lifestyles Programme provided an incredible opportunity for our students to not only sharpen their football skills but also gain meaningful insights into how to take care of their bodies and minds.
Samsara's Journey: From Early Years to Graduation
From her very first days in Nursery to her final moments as an IB Diploma graduate, Samsara has spent 15 years growing, learning, and thriving at BIS Abu Dhabi. A true "BISAD Baby", she has left a lasting mark not only in the classroom, but across courts, fields and swimming pools.
Now, as she prepares to study Material Science at the University of Manchester, she looks back on the moments, challenges and achievements that made her school experience truly unforgettable.
Samsara’s sporting story began early, joining the school’s swimming team in Year 2. At the time, the team needed more swimmers, and the coach knew she could swim, her older sister Tamsin was already on the team. Thrown straight into competition, Samsara remembers how nervous she felt at that first match. Back then, the school still used a small 16m pool until the Team Falcon facility opened nine years ago. Adjusting to the full 25m lengths was a challenge she still vividly remembers, but it became part of her development as an athlete.
Over the years, Samsara didn’t just stick to swimming. She played Netball and Football, joined BSME Dance for two years, and even tried Basketball briefly in Year 4. She competed in nearly every BSME event available - U11, U13, and U19 - only missing U15 due to the COVID pandemic. Through it all, sport taught her valuable life lessons, from time management and staying organised, to using training as a way to mentally reset and stay balanced.
This last term brought a particularly meaningful moment when she won her first swimming trophy at the BSME Championships at Dubai’s Hamdan Sports Complex. Achieving third place in her age group based on FINA points, it was a proud moment that summed up years of hard work - and a perfect way to end her time as a school athlete. While swimming has always held a special place in her heart, Samsara also loved the team spirit of Netball. Being part of a team, celebrating victories together and playing in sync, offered something uniquely rewarding. Swimming, with its individual focus, gave her quiet strength and mental clarity, but team sports brought a sense of connection and shared purpose.
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. As one of only few girls continuing swimming training from Year 9 and up, it could sometimes feel
isolating, and frustrating to see boys swimming faster, even when she was putting in just as much effort. But Samsara reminded herself that everyone has different strengths, and perseverance was key. She also faced a moment in Football when she considered quitting after not being selected for matches despite regular training. Encouraged by a friend who believed in her, she chose to keep going, a decision that paid off when she played one of her best games at a tournament earlier this year.
Looking ahead, Samsara is excited to continue her sporting journey alongside her studies. The University of Manchester pool is right next to the engineering building, and even used by the British Olympic Team, which she finds incredibly inspiring. She also hopes to try rowing and cycling, the latter a sport that runs in the family.
One of her favourite school memories is winning the BSME U19 competition two years ago, the first and only time BIS Abu Dhabi has taken home that title. Being one of the youngest on the team, and competing alongside her sister, made it even more special. The school celebrated with a parade through the hallways and across the field, with students and staff cheering them on.
Her message to younger students is simple, "Give sport a try, even if it feels challenging. Don’t give up, especially if it’s something you love."
Samsara’s story is a powerful reminder of the role sport plays in building resilience, character and balance. As she begins her next chapter, we can’t wait to see her thrive, in science, in sport, and beyond.
BIS Abu Dhabi Graduate Sophia Sarao
What made BIS Abu Dhabi special for you?
BIS Abu Dhabi is a school where everyone feels welcome, no matter their background or native language. When we moved here in 2018, we chose it because of how much the staff genuinely care about both student wellbeing and education. At first, I struggled studying in English, but thanks to the support from teachers and friends, I made quick progress. When it came to choosing my IGCSE subjects, the teachers took the time to understand my interests and guided me toward the best choices.
Which school club, activity, trip or project inspired you the most?
Class of 2022
How did the IB help your experience at university?
In Year 10, I went on the most amazing school trip to Tanzania. From flying all together, camping and safari to two days of building and supporting local schools, this trip made me realise just how lucky I was, and to appreciate the little things more. I will always cherish this trip and the memories made. I also have fond memories of being a part of the U15 BSME team in Year 9 & 10. It was an amazing opportunity that helped me become more independent, build stronger friendships, and grow in confidence.
What is the most important lesson you learned at BIS Abu Dhabi?
I’d say the biggest thing was learning to be adaptable, whether it was picking up new skills, working with people from different backgrounds, or tackling unexpected challenges. Being in such an international environment really opened my mind, made me more resilient, and helped me feel comfortable adapting to just about any situation.
Which university & degree did you choose & why?
I originally planned to study Business Management, but then I found out I could combine that with Hospitality, which was perfect, since I’ve always loved traveling and exploring new cultures. That’s when I decided to apply to EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne. I started my Bachelor's in International Hospitality Management at EHL’s Junior Academy in 2022. After two years filled with ups and downs, unforgettable friendships, and hands-on experience in some of the world’s top hotels, my time at EHL has come to an end and a new chapter has begun in Lucerne at SHL. I’m currently one month into a six-month internship at the prestigious 5-star Bürgenstock Hotel & Resort.
The IB workload was intense, but it taught me how to manage my time effectively. It really prepared me to juggle assignments, exams, and a social life at university without feeling totally overwhelmed. One of the biggest advantages was the emphasis on writing. I remember struggling through my Extended Essay, but by the time I got to university, writing long research papers felt much more manageable compared to some of my peers who hadn’t had that experience. Another huge benefit was the way IB pushed me to be well-rounded. Because of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), I didn’t just focus on academics, I had to stay involved in extracurriculars, volunteer work, and other projects. That mindset carried over into university, where I felt more comfortable getting involved in different clubs and activities rather than just focusing on coursework.
What has been your proudest moment since graduating?
One of my proudest moments since graduating has been learning to navigate life independently, make my own decisions, take responsibility for myself, and grow into adulthood without relying on family. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding.
Professionally, I’m proud to have secured my first internship at the Four Seasons Hotel in Prague, an amazing learning experience. Now, working at the Bürgenstock Hotel and Resorts, I’m continuing to grow, gaining valuable skills and building a strong foundation for the future. Both experiences have shaped me, and I’m excited for what’s next.
I am so thankful for BIS Abu Dhabi for five unforgettable years, full of great memories and friendships I’ll always cherish. It truly helped shape who I am today.
METACOGNITION IT'S A LEARNING SUPERPOWER
At The British International School Abu Dhabi, we’re helping our students develop their metacognitive skills.
