A very warm welcome to Birmingham Pride 2018. It’s incredible to think how far Pride has travelled since 1997, particularly in more recent years.

Be You

The event continues to bring together the LGBTQ community with the wider community, and has a strong resonance in the city, the region and beyond.

Birmingham is a city truly proud of its cultural diversity. The Pride festival is a golden opportunity to recognise the rich tapestry of races, cultures and communities which come together to celebrate our equality and freedom. And so, it’s fitting that, this year, our theme is simply ‘Be You’. This year we’re delighted to present our most diverse Pride Festival main stage artists to date, plus the introduction of the new Future Stage, new locations for both the Cabaret Marquee and Dance Arena, and the introduction of a new food court area - see our Pride map on page 8 for all the locations. May I wish everyone who attends Birmingham Pride 2018 a very happy, safe and memorable time. Lawrence Barton Birmingham Pride Festival Director With every passing year, the role of Birmingham Pride within the fabric and cultural offer of this place becomes ever powerful.

This event bringing tens of thousands of people from far and wide to Birmingham as part of the biggest two-day celebration of the LGBTQ community in the country.

It’s now difficult to imagine how the city’s cultural calendar would look without the eye-opening colours, the welcoming and friendly atmosphere, the cabaret, the music and revelry that the festival brings to our streets each year. For me, the truly great thing about Pride is the way that different parts of our community – a community that is diverse in ways no other place in this country can match – join together in this celebration. It brings together businesses, community groups, charities, voluntary organisations, families, young people, elderly people and everyone in-between to share in the fun. For this is truly a celebration for everybody to join in. A celebration of the tolerant, diverse region that West Midlanders call home. For this is a region that is very much on the up, and that really should bring about a sense of Pride. Congratulations to everyone who works so hard to make Birmingham Pride a success. Enjoy yourselves, stay safe and have a great weekend.

What’s On across the city... Birmingham Pride takes place in the heart of the city’s Southside district, in and around the Gay Village and alongside one of the UK’s largest theatres, the Birmingham Hippodrome. Just a short stroll from the Gay Village are numerous other theatres/arts venues that are well worth a visit. These include the New Alexandra Theatre, the Birmingham REP, Birmingham Town Hall and the prestigious Symphony Hall. For art enthusiasts, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is a must, while those in need of sustenance can check out some of the city’s ever-popular restaurants, cafes and cocktail bars.

City of Culture

Ginger Johnson presents Glamorous Gran And Other Tall Stories Symphony Hall, Sun 27 May One for younger Pride audiences, this Symphony Hall gig sees ‘nightmare in nylons and drag superstar’ Ginger Johnson recount a series of ‘hilarious’ stories for switched-on kids, all of which just happen to feature a host of queer characters.

Legally Blonde New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, Mon 21 - Sat 26 May X Factor finalist Lucie Jones takes the lead in this tonguein-cheek musical based on the hit movie starring Reese Witherspoon. If you’re not familiar with the storyline, the toe-tapping production follows the story of college sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods, a girl who just doesn’t take no for an answer...

Giggle Pride The Fox, Mon 28 May What better way to round off your Pride weekend than by enjoying a night of comedy at The Fox. Hosted by everpopular stand-up comedian, actor and ‘globetrotter’ Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Sat 16 June Maureen Younger, this year’s BGSO is one of the UK’s most vibrant non-professional offering promises plenty of orchestras. This landmark 10th anniversary concert sees laughs courtesy of Jayde Jack Lovell picking up the baton to present a programme Adams, Chloe Petts and Isma. of iconic soundtracks, with John Williams’ score to The evening also includes a Jurassic Park, the theme tune from Spartacus and unique performance from The Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake all featuring. City of Culture Romeo & Juliet Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, until Fri 21 September The world’s most famous love story is given a contemporary setting in this new Royal Shakespeare Company production starring Midlands lad Bally Gill as Romeo. Audiences can expect plenty of strobe lighting in a story that sees love at first sight explode into an intense passion and an irresistible desire for change.

Goldilock, Stock And Three Smoking Bears Old Joint Stock Theatre, Wed 23 - Fri 25 May This well-reviewed alternative comedy takes the much-loved fairytale about a blonde girl’s run-in with a family of bears and adds in a liberal dose of inspiration from Guy Ritchie’s 1990s gangster movie, Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. Blending songs and in-jokes with rude’n’racy humour, the show finds silver-tongued heroine Goldilock on the run from a pack of bears and a far-from-happy gangster. Expect multiple plot threads and plenty of cockney chit-chat...

Concubine

Titanic The Musical

Birmingham Hippodrome, Mon 4 - Sat 9 June Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is described as ‘a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers, who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own.’ This new production is helmed by the Birmingham-born artistic director of Charing Cross Theatre, Thom Southerland. It visits the Midlands as part of a UK tour.

To find out what else is on during the Birmingham Pride weekend, check out whatsonlive.co.uk/birmingham

Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Thurs 31 May - Sat 2 June Human trafficking and female oppression are at the forefront of this powerful production from REP Foundry alumni Amarha Spence. Directed by Daniel Bailey, Concubine contemplates how women can still be ‘owned’ in modern society, and asks how much we are to blame. #Brum www.birminghampride.com 45

Birmingham offers plenty of choice when it comes to cuisine. Over the past decade, Birmingham has earned itself an impressive reputation as a fantastic destination for foodies. Attracting both national and international food chains, the UK’s second city recently appeared in the New York Times’ top-20 list of international cities to visit based on culinary reputation. Boasting four Michelin-star restaurants - Purnell’s, Simpsons, Adams and Carters - Birmingham recently became the destination of choice for iconic brand The Ivy to set up shop outside London. The city also offers an abundance of choice when it comes to international cuisine, including Chinese, Indian, Italian, French, Spanish, South American and North American. Lebanese restaurant Comptoir Libanais, located in Grand Central, is the latest addition to Brum’s ‘flavours of the world’ offering. Southside is home to Chinatown and provides plenty of options for those

wanting to grab food on the go. Alternatively, why not bag a table at the award-winning Chung Ying, regarded as one of the most popular Chinese eateries in the Midlands.

on site, many of which will be offering healthy options. For more restaurants, head to BirminghamWhatsOn.co.uk

The Loft on Bromsgrove Street is another Southside favourite. In addition to delicious homemade burgers, pizzas and a popular specials menu, the venue offers an extensive range of premium spirits, craft beer and cocktails. However, The Loft won’t be serving food on the Saturday or Sunday of Pride weekend. If you fancy mixing a spot of weekend shopping with a bite to eat, head up to Grand Central, where you’ll find a host of well-known brands, including Pho, Giraffe, Tapas Revolution, Mowgli Street Food, Ed’s Easy Diner and Yo! Sushi. Don’t worry if you don’t fancy venturing too far from the Pride festival action - there’ll be plenty of food outlets

Volunteer at Pride Can you help and support Pride? Volunteering provides people with an opportunity to shine, to make new friends, and also to play a part in ensuring that the Birmingham Pride festival is inclusive and open to all. Our Pride Ambassadors scheme has been a huge success in recent years -

everyone who gets involved feels a real sense of community and achievement. There are plenty of opportunities to participate, whether it be as a Parade Steward, a Wheel Marshall, a Registration Volunteer, part of the clean-up crew, or by Fundraising throughout the festival.

Be part of something that’s fun and varied, and show the Midlands how we pull together for Pride. So if you’ve got a few hours to spare during the event and would like to find out more, register your interest now by emailing: simon@birminghampride.com
