20th-Century Masterpieces
This is ballet at its most powerfuldazzling and moving.
Discover how ballet can thrill and delight through sheer artistry and brilliance, and yet also explore the darker realities of life, holding space for both wonder and reflection.
Now in his 99th year, Sir Peter Wright, who led BRB when it first moved to Birmingham, was a champion of 20thcentury ballets, whilst creating his own renowned new interpretations of 19thcentury classics. This programme celebrates Sir Peter’s legacy to BRB with highlights from his productions such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Coppélia, alongside performances of Kurt Jooss’s thoughtprovoking The Green Table and Sir Frederick Ashton’s sparkling Birthday Offering.
Sir Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of the Royal Ballet Companies, made Birthday Offering for the then Sadler’s Wells Ballet to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 1956 (the year they became The Royal Ballet), working with a dazzling cast of dancers that included Margot Fonteyn.
The Green Table is considered Kurt Jooss’s masterwork - created in 1932 he foreshadows the ultimate futility of the peace negotiations of that decade and shows Death becoming the inevitable dance partner of each of the characters in turn. Sir Peter danced with Ballett Jooss as a young man and The Green Table is one of his favourite works which he introduced into BRB's repertory in the 1990s.
The opening performance on Thursday 18 June* forms a special tribute to Sir Peter and his legacy in his centenary year.
*Please note this performance includes more excerpts from Sir Peter’s works for BRB than the other performances in the run but does not include Birthday Offering; it replaces the originally advertised Peter Wright Centenary performance in February 2026.
Birthday Offering is supported by The Frederick Ashton Foundation and The Rick Mather David Scrase Foundation. The Green Table is supported by donations from Mr Stuart Sweeney and Fern & Clive Potter. 20th-Century Masterpieces is also supported by generous donors to The Caroline Miller Fund.

Sylvia Pankhurst. Activist. Rebel. Icon.
Torn between loyalty, love, and revolution, see her remarkable story explode onto the stage.
The Olivier Award-winning musical is fuelled by a soundtrack that joyously unites hip hop, funk, and soul, and is brought to life by world-renowned choreographer and storyteller Kate Prince (ZooNation).
Powerhouse talent Beverley Knight (Sister Act) will reprise her Olivier award-winning role as Emmeline Pankhurst, alongside Sharon Rose (Hamilton) as Sylvia.

Matthew Bourne’s award-winning The Car Man is back! Loosely based on Bizet’s ever-popular opera, The Car Man has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire.
The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy 1950’s garage-diner in the American Mid-West where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.
“A shatteringly good piece of storytelling. Terrific”
Age Guidance 12+. Please be advised that this production contains scenes of a sexual nature, brief nudity, strobe lighting, and gunshots.
In this brand new show, Lee shares his stage with a tough-talking werewolf comedian from the dark forests of the subconscious who hates humanity. The Man-Wulf lays down a ferocious comedy challenge to the culturally irrelevant and physically enfeebled Lee. Can the beast inside us all be silenced with the silver bullet of Lee’s unprecedentedly critically acclaimed style of stand-up?
“ Set to be one of the highlights, if not the highlight, of the comedy year”

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-awardwinning Blood Brothers. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).
“ One of the best musicals ever”

A spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s multi award-winning musical CATS is coming to Birmingham Hippodrome.
From Euston station to Victoria Grove, the strays and rebels of London gather under the Jellicle moon in the hope they’ll be the chosen one. And each of them asks, because each of them dares, who will it be?
Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, and with a legendary score which inspired generations featuring, Old Deuteronomy, Macavity: The Mystery Cat, Jellicle Ball and the charttopping hit Memory, this brand-new production of CATS, directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie arrives October 2026 for two weeks only.
Nothing brings the magic of Christmas to life quite like Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker which has been entertaining generations every Christmas since 1990.
This sumptuous and timeless production boasts daring swordfights, falling snow, magic, and a 30-foot Christmas tree.
Whether you’re yearning for a hint of nostalgia or looking to start a whole new tradition for your family and friends, plan ahead ready to start your 2026 festive season in style.
