Retrospective and Prospective

Since 2015, enterprises in Taiwan began to include Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) into their business agenda. In 2017 Bio-Architecture Formosana received award from the Society for Management of Technology for its thorough practice of Design Sustainability from prime planning to design and construction. Our practice emphasizes the research, development and application of green creativity, and we wish to draw out a framework comparable to the CSR in the design industry. Hopefully, this report can serve as a milestone for architecture profession to begin non-stop investigation of its impacts to our planet. “Good, True and Beautiful� has always been the principle of the Bio-Arch, from physical environment planning, to each phase of design, and to the resource employment or cycling(materials, facilities, design tools, construction techniques and systems, etc.) in different spaces. And when our works are delivered to the users, we help the operation and maintenance. We keep watch and predict their influence to the environment, good or bad, throughout their lifespans as the reference of our green strategies in the future.

Our green architecture has won many green building labels in Taiwan. We use Building Information Modeling(BIM) to conduct simulation of the use of regenerated energy, environmental investigation of individual projects, and calculation of carbon footprint.

Furthermore, urged by our client Taisugar, since 2017 Bio-Architecture Formosana has adopted a design mode of circular economy, which allows us to have a more integral, greener, and more energy saving and more innovative practice. It brings us closer to our goal for a more sustainable design industry.

This report will be compiled annually, in the hope to take our responsibility of the impacts we are causing to the environment.

Learning from the Cycles of Mother Earth

The ecology of the Earth was activated by solar energy. Elements from air, oceans and lands constantly exchange in cycles, which nourish lives and develop selfadaptive mechanism. We breathe, eat and drink on this lively planet without aware of her existence. A few scientists discovering her secrets call her Gaia, the mother earth from Greek myths. Nevertheless, over the past centuries, the ignorance of human being has resulted in speed deterioration of the environment, mass extinction of species, and extreme climate change. Our mother earth has decayed to the degree that threats the survival of coming generations.

Located at the edge of Asian continent and the Pacific Ocean, Taiwan is faced with great hazards from the active plate tectonics and air movements. Policies regarding the national growth should have comprehensive measures to address the risks from natural disasters. Additionally, Taiwan is a small island of limited natural resources but with high population density, thus all the resources and materials should be smartly used and reused. To be smart, we rely on imagination and technology.

Unfortunately, under the system of linear economy, the price the environment is paying for growth had been overlooked. The life cycles of products or buildings are never the concern of design business, and the consequences are hard to ignore.

More and more reformers globally advocate circular economy for the future. Base on our experience of the past twenty years, we deeply understand the significance of circular economy. In 2017 our project in Taisugar’s development in Shalun opened a door for us to be the practitioner of circular economy, and at the same time showed us all the possible challenges in the long journey. We expect to move toward our dreams together with experts from all kinds of fields, materials, construction and facilities etc., to overcome difficulties and turn a new page of this industry with imagination and technology.

This report consists of Sustainability Credits and Projects, based on the works of Bio-Arch in 2016 and 2017 that are either in the process of design, or under construction, or completed.

All the statistic numbers are gathered from the formula of the EEWH green building evaluation system in Taiwan, namely universally standardized indexes regarding ecology, energy saving, waste reduction and health. We have been awarded quite a few labels of green building or intelligent building from the EEWH, or expecting approval of certification for our new works. Our applications always aim at the highest rate of certification.

According to the sustainable technology we apply, our projects are categorized into six themes, responding to the four fields of green building. Our idealism in design is clearly and concisely expressed through the images, diagrams and texts about the sites, the exterior and interior of the buildings.

Considering the long-term contribution to the environment and architecture of Bio-Arch’s works, we reveal crucial numbers from ten subjects we’ve gotten from standards of green architecture(Building Technique Regulations) and EEWH. Some numbers show our achievement by summing up, one example is the carbon sequestration of vegetation. The trees, shrubs and lawns we’ve planted over the past years could store 1.42 million kg carbon dioxide every year.

Some numbers show their significance with comparisons: The office buildings and residential buildings we designed save 34% to 36% more energy than the baseline required by the regulations. For the interior of each project, we employ 71% green materials in average, much higher than the 45% required by law. Our project throughout Taiwan could collect as much as 94,000 tons rainwater, and generate 140,000 KWh solar power each year.

All of Bio-Arch’s projects set out from our ideas of sustainability. In addition to recognizable green approaches, we apply for certificates that meet the demands of our clients and the needs of the users. Because of the certification, each project is characterized by its worth to the clients and users. Even for projects with challenging sites or impossible budgets, our effort to have each project certificated is never compromised and always aim at the highest ranked certificates. In recent years we’ve been awarded 9 diamond-class labels and 11 Gold-class labels, and most of our works have been awarded labels above or equal to Silverclass intelligent buildings. We’re also including carbon footprint for our design and applying for low-carbon architecture certification.

Green Building Label The Green Building Labeling of Taiwan is developed based on Taiwan’s high humidity subtropical/tropical climate. Buildings awarded the labels are those sufficiently meet the needs in ecological balance, energy saving, waste reduction, and healthiness. The system comprises of evaluation indicators including: biodiversity, vegetation, water infiltration and retention, water conservation, daily energy conservation, CO2 emission reduction, construction waste reduction, indoor environment quality, and sewage and waste disposal facilities. The rating system defines five classes of green building design, they are: Certified, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond.

Intelligent Building Label Intelligent Building incorporates communicative information and control technology into architecture for more humanistic living quality. The Intelligent Building Labeling system employs eight evaluation indicators, namely unified wiring, information and communication, system integration, facility management, disaster prevention and safety, energy efficiency, healthiness and comfort, and innovative intelligent technology. The rating system defines five classes of green building design, they are: Certified, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond.

Low Carbon Building Label Low Carbon Building Alliance(LCBA) affiliated to Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology is the first organization providing evaluation of architectural carbon footprint all over the world. It helps precisely calculate carbon emission throughout the lifespan of a building, diagnose controllable carbon hotspots, and guide businesses to take effective actions to reduce carbon emission. LCBA’s service is established upon the most sensible indicators of the environment, and it awards low carbon building labels through open, transparent and trustable procedure of evaluation.

LEED Certification LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a widely used green building rating system to recognize sustainability achievement.

The rating methods value seven design strategies: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovative technology and regional priority.

Chinese Green Building Labels China’s Green Building Label considers seven factors: land saving and outdoor environment, energy saving and energy utilization, water saving and resource utilization, material saving and utilization, indoor environment quality, construction management, and operating management. Each indicator can be awarded one star, two stars or three stars.

Symbiotic Environment

Architectural design starts from the environment. In addition to the location of a site, the usage of the land, the activities happening around, we explore the microclimate of the place, and consider the wind speed, solar radiation, temperature and humidity in our design.

Once all the information we need is sufficient, we combine programs into the issues we are addressing in design themes. Eventually, an overall strategy is proposed to meet the demands of the clients and the users. The design themes could cover the functions of the building, the characteristics of the place, or the culture of the business to be occupying the building, or the lifestyles of the people to be living in the building. In practice, users’ needs, historical and cultural factors and environmental conditions are prior considerations in the arrangement of the space, as well as the best form of the building. We also consider the wind fields of the site to decide the direction and opens of the building, so air would flow freely through the atriums, corridors, and each corner of the building.

Considering how the volumes of the new buildings might affect pedestrians, the design maintains a comfortable wind environment.

Eco編輯 Landscape 原則

The ecology and landscape we plan together with experts are not only for the pleasure of sight but also for the spontaneous mechanism of eco-balance. Diverse indigenous species are reintroduced, trees and shrubs are densely planted on roofs and terraces, even over walls. In accordance with the conditions of the sites and the traits of the buildings, we incubate a complete ecology. For examples, revetments or side slopes constructed following the natural topography for ecological benefits are staked by porous materials so animals still could make them as their inhabitat. Eco-ponds that function as water filter and flood detention are created with pebbles and aquatic plants for bioremediation of wastewater. Our goal is to maintain a living ecological equilibrium that brings positive effects to the users.

Energy Saving and 編輯 Energy 原則 Efficiency

Through sophisticated design for the shell of a building and carefully planned energy regeneration, we accomplish the goal of high energy efficiency. The shell means the surfaces of a building in contact with outdoor atmosphere, including exterior walls and roofs. On top of the visual effects, we take care of insulation, sun shading, ventilation, and interactions between human and animals or plants. Balconies, multilayered exterior walls, earth covered roofs and energy saving glass among other insulating materials are decided during the design of shells, which we apply 3-dimensional models to test the heat radiation on the surfaces for the best choice of forms. Our ultimate goal is to design comfortable, energy efficient and stylistic architecture.

Regenerated energy covers solar power, tidal energy, wind power, hydraulic power, bioenergy. The most commonly employed regenerated energy in architecture is solar power, it can be used in parallel with the existing power supply. Large scaled application of solar energy could be a part of architectural design, namely building-integrated photovoltaics(BIPV) that makes use of solar panels for roofs, canopies or trellises to reduce visual impacts.

Resource 編輯 Utilization 原則

The problem of unwisely consuming resources during construction is quite common, but with a good plan it is easy to improve. Most of our projects employ certificated recycled materials to reduce waste. We also employ as much as possible locally available materials, such as bricks or tiles from demolished buildings or the disposals from local businesses. Reapplying old bricks and tiles allows us to produce even less carbon than using recycled materials. Ground disposals mixed with paints can be used for insulation over roofs and exterior walls.

Our buildings also collect rainwater, after simple treatment it can be used for plant watering or cleaning, for the purpose of reducing water consumption.

The comfort of interior space for all types of buildings is our major concern.

From partitions to upholstery materials among all the physical environmental factors, we propose our ideas and constantly discuss with clients and users in details. To be rational and objective, we apply professional softwares to conduct the simulations of ventilation, lighting, heat storage among other physical environmental conditions in order to analyze the performance of a building in different seasons at different times and under different climate. Our design also considers the directional and spatial arrangement of each room, and partitioning them with clear or light-tinted glass to introduce light into each of them. And opens are created according to the air passages, temperature and humidity to enhance natural ventilation. Ceilings are made with certificated green panels, and walls and floors are covered with non-polluting paints to reduce health hazards.

Our long devotion in intelligent green architecture has been highly credited, and we are continuing developing innovative design and new construction techniques.

Green building simulation and modeling should be introduced during the prime phase of the design. Calculation conducted for green building labels afterwards achieves little. Unfortunately, most of the contractors still commission another party to apply for green building labels without incorporating upgraded ideas.

Hopefully, as a building is in service, the users and managers are able to understand the intention of the design and the effort of the designers to minimize the need of maintenance.

Circular Economy

Our New Office / An Example of Circular Economy At the end of 2017 our office moved from Shilin District to Chungshan District. The new office is at a convenient location near the Tatung University and Chingkuan Market, and easy to reach the MRT Red Line. In the new office we enjoy the view to Datun Mountain and Kuanyin Mountain. Additionally, the taking off or landing of aircrafts from the Songshan Airport add dynamics to our daily routines.

We’d dismantled all the bookshelves, sliding doors and screens and moved them with us. Old desks, chairs, lights and fans were also brought to our new office. We situate ourselves in a new ambiance with familiar milieu.

We minimized the upholstery, and applied green or recycled materials. We also maximized energy efficiency through smart arrangement. Our partitions were produced by old materials, mixing and matching with old and new furniture. Wiring is well integrated into the partitioned rooms. Non-volatile compounds among other green materials are employed, linoleum flooring was introduced. The arrangement of the wiring circuits for lights, T5 high performance light tubes, and shutters were to reduce the energy consumption for lighting.
