Mary Jane the Sweepstakes Winner Loves Bingo At American Legion Post 416 In Greendale, WI
Mary Jane Lampe has been playing Bingo for 15 years or more. There was a time in the past when she played at American Legion Post 416 and at Wisconsin Seniors Bingo. Seniors no longer has Bingo so now she plays exclusively at American Legion Post 416 at 6351 W. Grange Ave. in Greendale, Wisconsin. They play Bingo at 6:00 PM on Sundays (doors open at 5:00 PM) and 9:45 AM on Tuesdays (doors open around 8:45 AM).
We asked Mary Jane what keeps her coming back to American Legion Post 416. “The people here run a very good game. The volunteers and players at this hall are very friendly.” Mary Jane used to play Bingo at different places with her late sister in law. Her sister in law actually got her started playing Bingo. They were talking to a mutual friend named Karen who was a veteran and a member of American Legion Post 416. Karen told them that it would be a good idea to come play Bingo at the Post because they play on Sunday evenings and Tuesday mornings. Well, that was right up Mary Jane’s alley. She like many others, prefers not to drive at night. Morning Bingo works out great.
Mary Jane told us about the advantages of playing at Post 416. “You can normally sit in the same area for Bingo, that guarantees you’ll be close to your friends.” Who doesn’t like to be near their friends?
“You don’t win all the time, but its the anticipation that keeps the excitement high, especially when you’re one

number away. She said, “Just stick to Bingo and enjoy it and have fun. Sometimes you think you’ll loose and you end up winning. Playing benefits the veterans and that’s always a big win!” Bingo is good for you physically and mentally. “Bingo really keeps you going, you need enjoyment in your life and you can have some Bingo fun at the same time.” Her winnings will go to more Bingo and she reads the Bingo Bugle every month, cover to cover.
We had a great time talking to Clifford Stark and Rolando Flores too. They are American Legion 416 Bingo guys. They help run the show and do the necessary duties behind the scenes. The Legion Post is very involved with the community. Friday Fish Frys from September through May from 4:30 - 7:30 PM, sponsoring Monday night
Line Dancing, 4th of July Celebration from June 30th to July 4th, they’ll serve Rotissiere Chicken and Barbeque Ribs. That’s not all, there’s Village Days August 10th - August 13th, Spaghetti Dinner on April 22nd and Haydaze September 22nd.
We know that we owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans for all they’ve done to ensure our freedom and way of life. Sometimes we forget to realize that they continue to give of themselves as volunteers to the community after they finish their military service. Their habit of sacrificing for others, becomes their way of life.
Now that we know about playing Bingo at American Legion Post 416 it is time to take full advantage of it. Try Sunday evening or Tuesday morning Bingo. Great choices for everyone. You’ll be glad you did!

Bingo: The Next Generation
Dear Aunt Bingo,
I volunteer as a teaching assistant at an elementary school—which is walking distance from my house. It has been a wonderful second career since I took early retirement. I enjoy the school, the teachers and the other staff—but especially the children, who are so young and bright and have so much of their lives ahead of them.
One morning I was helping some students with a wall-art project that included creating a checkerboard pattern background made with sheets of colored paper. When the background was completed, I stepped back and commented that it looked like a giant Bingo card. The 12 or so students stared back at me blankly.
“You don’t think so?” I asked them.
“What’s a Bingo card?” one of the girls finally said.
I was stunned. Here was a group of intelligent youngsters who apparently had never heard of Bingo. “It’s a game,” I explained, “with rows of numbers that someone calls out and you try and match to win.”
“Oh yeah,” another one said. “I think I’ve heard of that.” A few of the other students nodded, while the rest continued to stare. “You add the numbers up or something,” she added.
It was one of those jaw-dropping moments—like when you meet someone who has never heard of saddle shoes, Sputnik or John Wayne. I felt a little ancient. Then realized I now had a mission. “I’ll see if it’s okay to bring Bingo to school sometime,” I said.
In response, one of the boys shook his head and rolled his eyes. “Great…more math,” he moaned. —Elaine G., Valley Stream, New York
Dear Elaine,
I guess in the age of computer gaming and digital entertainment, games like traditional Bingo are taking longer to reach the newest generation.
Hopefully the teacher in charge will permit you to bring in one of those Dollar Store sets so you can show the kids what you are talking about. Perhaps you can give away bite-sized candy bars as prizes. Once the first couple of kids win those, I’m sure there will be lots of interest.
It seems to me that Bingo can be very educational: For example, in teaching number and pattern recognition, taking part in nonphysical competition, and learning that you can’t win them all.
Later in life—when they discover that you can also go out for a day or evening of Bingo, socialize, and win some cash in the process—it should also conjure up nostalgic memories of playing Bingo for candy bars with Mrs. G. —Aunt Bingo

VA needs More Employees for the PACT Act
PACT is officially up and running as of the first of the year. PACT, aka Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act, extends health care and benefits to veterans who were exposed to toxins around the globe and who subsequently became ill with an expanded number of presumptives. The key feature of PACT is that veterans no longer have to fight to prove where their illness came from. It’s “presumed” the illness was the result of the toxins in the environment where they served.
Meanwhile, the Department of Veterans Affairs has been on a massive hiring blitz to fill positions in support of the new PACT Act. These positions will be all across the U.S. and Puerto Rico at all 56 regional offices. Not only do they need people to process the 175,000 claims that have been
submitted since August (when the PACT Act was signed into law), but they need the people who give the actual support care.
If you, a spouse, a caregiver, a survivor or family member are interested in signing on for a position, check usajobs.gov and search for “veterans service representative” or “rating veterans service representative.”
The first step as part of the big push at the VA is to process the claims for veterans who are terminally ill. Additionally they will prioritize claims by homeless veterans, those over 85 years of age, those with cancer, those experiencing financial hardship and those who are recipients of a Purple Heart or Medal of Honor.
If you need to learn how to file a claim, go to VA.gov/PACT or call them at 800-MyVA411 (800698-2411). A caregiver, survivor or family member can also make the call for the veteran.
To learn more about PACT, go to VA.gov/PACT and read “The PACT Act and your VA benefits.”

PICKS OF THE MONTH
Everything Everywhere All at Once (R) — Evelyn Quan lives in a state of chaos in her everyday life. She is the owner of a laundromat and mother to her misunderstood daughter, Joy, and a million other tasks always seem to snatch up her attention. Because of this, her relationships begin to fall apart, leading up to one seemingly ordinary day when her life gets flipped upside down. A version of her husband, Waymond, from an alternate universe, visits her in need of her help from the evil Jobu Tupaki, who plans to destroy each existing universe one by one. As this alternate Waymond teaches her about the multiverse, Evelyn learns she has a much bigger purpose than she ever imagined in the fight against Jobu. With Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan taking home Golden Globes for this visually stunning film, Everything Everywhere All at Once is incredibly profound — and a must-watch. (Showtime)
You People (R) — Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) hasn’t had much luck in his quest for love, although marriage is something he definitely sees in his future. When he accidentally wanders in Amira’s (Lauren London) car, thinking that she’s his Uber driver, he begs her for the chance to make it up to her. Ezra and Amira begin to hit it off, and Ezra finally feels like he’s found the right person for him. As he makes
plans to propose to Amira, Ezra’s friend, Sam, tells him he needs to speak with Amira’s family. So, Ezra sits down with Amira’s parents (Eddie Murphy and Nia Long), and he finds that integrating his Jewish family with Amira’s Black family isn’t as seamless as he thought it’d be. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Mike Epps also star in this relatable comedy film, co-written by Hill and director Kenya Barris. (Netflix)
Shotgun Wedding (R) — Originally starring Armie Hammer as the male lead before abuse allegations came out against him, this romantic comedy film about a destination wedding replaced him with Josh Duhamel in the male lead role, with Jennifer Lopez as his opposite. They play a couple named Tom and Darcy, who are about to say their “I do’s” in the perfect tropical setting. At first, Tom and Darcy think the worst of their worries will be dealing with their eccentric family members. But then, right before the wedding, plans get interrupted by a heavily loaded gang of criminals. The criminals take Tom and Darcy’s families hostage, but the couple manages to escape and attempts to get help while simultaneously running from the captors. Is there any better way to start the rest of your lives together? (Prime Video)

Nothing Beats the Blues Like Bingo
“Oh, darn, I am such a klutz,” said Kate from the kitchen where she is supposedly learning to cook. “I am hopeless. Clumsy. Awkward. A bungler.”
“Nobody gets it all right from the first try,” I said, hoping to console her.
“Just look at this mess. I wouldn’t feed it to the pigs. I am truly
hopeless,” Kate went on.
“Well,” I said finally, “argue for your limitations and you get to keep them.”
“You and your philosophy!” she rejoined. “What are we going to do for dinner?”
“I’ll spring for pizza and a salad before Bingo,” I said.
We were trying a new Bingo place tonight and I was eager to get going. “Come on. Let’s go. I’m hungry now.”
The new place was small and unassuming, being tucked into a mall corner and sponsored by the Boys and Girls clubs.
We were early and sat near the caller, who was a woman from our neighborhood. She was inclined to be talkative before the action started and asked for some suggestions for the special games.
“I like the ‘H’ in either direction,” I said.
“That’s a good idea.” The young woman looked at Kate. “Oh, don’t ask me,” said Kate. “I am such a dummy. I would screw the whole game up.”
“She’s down on herself tonight,” I said. “Ordinarily she’s not like this.”
“Give me another bit of your wisdom,” said Kate gloomily.
I thought for a minute, then said, “Come. Be silent with me.”
“That’s a great idea,” she said. “I won’t speak again tonight.”
It worked out rather well—except Kate hit Bingo on the “H” and had to call out to get her winnings.
When we left for the evening, she was in a much better mood and hummed happily as she was likely thinking back on her Bingo win. Then she held up two crossed fingers.
“I want to speak,” she declared.
“Permission granted,” I said.
“I’ve decided I’m going to take a cooking class and learn how to do stuff in the kitchen.”
“What a great idea!” I said. “And I will continue to be your official taste tester, or whatever you want to call it. Just don’t be so down on yourself.”
“I promise,” said Kate solemnly, but with a smile.

We Take Daubers for Granted
I recently got a wonderful e-mail (at bingo@earthlink.net) from Frannie Tompkins. She wrote: “Dear Bob, we take daubers for granted. I would like to know more about daubers. I remember the days BEFORE daubers when we had thick cards with sliding windows…and before that…when we had cards we marked with kernels of corn. See what you can find out.”
Thanks, Frannie. I too remember the days when my grandmother used to mark her cards with kernels of corn. One night,
someone bumped her table and sent the corn flying. I was ten at the time. I remember hearing my grandmother use words I had never heard before!
Frannie, when I lived in Las Vegas I used to go to an amazing place called the Gambler’s General Store. After finding the store on the Internet, I called them. NOTE: I am obligated to point out that I got only information from them, for this article. I got no other reward…not even a lousy dauber!
I talked to a wonderful woman named Wendy. She also remembers the days before modern-day daubers. She told me that the kind of daubers we use today were first introduced about 35 years ago and you can call them a DAUBER or a DABBER. It’s funny, some people even say: “You DAB with a DAUBER.” Figure that out. Whatever you call them, they now come in a dazzling array of colors and designs.
“We sell a ton of them,” Wendy told me. “Some people buy special colors to represent their school or organization.”
She also said that the things that
go along with Bingo, like the bags and buttons and all the other stuff are big sellers.
When was the last time you went to a Bingo game and saw someone with a special holder (usually made of felt-like cloth) that held enough daubers to start a store? For many, going to Bingo is more than an event, it’s a pageant.
And, I have to add something I like very much; packs of what look like playing cards but are actually 75 numbered cards—one for each of the Bingo numbers. Wendy says that these are becoming popular on long bus rides where people board a bus to go to some faroff Bingo venue, such as a major casino. They play along the way and the packs or cards are very convenient.
By the way, red and blue daubers may be the best sellers, but I get yellow ones to pre-mark patterns, such as the LETTER X. Thanks, Wendy, for your information on daubers.
Next time, I am going to start a contest to honor the nation’s favorite Bingo caller. E-mail me: bingo@earthlink.net.
* Make ice cubes out of punch when you are entertaining. I like to make different combinations, which can be adapted for adult and child parties. One that I like very much is to make ice cubes from red fruit punch and then float them in lemonade. As the cubes melt, the mixture turns pinky-orange. — I.F. in Missouri
* Wash bath towels in cold water. It preserves color and still cleans them well. Add a clean, dry bath towel to smaller dryer loads to speed up drying time.
* Turn down the maximum temperature on your family’s water heater. You will do two things: One is to avoid accidental scalding, which is especially important if you have young children or seniors in your house. The other is to lower your electric bill, because the water heater will not have to work as hard to keep that big tank of water so hot. — T.D. in New Mexico
* Keep a few bandanas handy in cold weather. They can be used as a mouth/face cover to keep your nose from freezing. They are easy to store in a pocket, and easy to put on and remove.

The Truth About Pull Tabs
Dear Guy,
Are you a pull tab fan? I think pull tabs are fun, but I think I’m spending too much money on them. Do you buy them? Do you set a limit on how many you buy? —GG, Pennsylvania, via e-mail
Dear GG,
Sure, I like pull tabs; I like anything that could win me money. And yes,
I absolutely have a budget for pull tabs, and for Bingo, too. Frankly, in this economy (and even before this economy), I set a budget for everything—groceries, gas, movies, eating out, Bingo, pull tabs—I plan every dollar out so that I know where my money is going and how fast. If I want to splurge $10 on pull tabs, I know ahead of time if it’s $10 I can afford to have disappear. The idea of just buying and buying pull tabs with the expectation that the next one will be a winner is careless and would certainly impact my budget for everything else. So yes, I like pull tabs and buy them regularly—but always in moderation. —Guy

Avoid Mental Pitfalls
No matter how good a blackjack player you think you are, you will eventually experience a losing session. How you manage yourself when this happens is just as important as knowing when to double down and split.
Sometimes players lose their money because of their lack of self-control caused by the exciting atmosphere in a casino. I wrote about this in my book, The Ten Best Casino Bets
“When you enter a casino, you are entering a place of business. Moreover, like all successful businesses, the casinos are run by shrewd businesspeople whose job is first, to keep you playing and happy, and second, to separate you from your money as quickly and painlessly as possibly. To meet these objectives, they create an atmosphere in the casino that can be described as a ‘Disneyland for adults.’ No clocks to let you know it’s time to leave this utopia, no windows to let you see out to the real world, free drinks at the tables, and free lounge shows.”
And what happens to the gambler when they enter this casino-designed excitement? The thought of winning a big chunk of the casino’s money outweighs the risks of losing a meager bankroll. Moreover, this exciting atmosphere makes it easy for the average player to feel lucky and go broke chasing a big payoff.
First, and foremost, in order to be a winner, you must learn to control your emotions in the casino. As casino gambling author Lyle Stuart succinctly put it, “The real struggle when you are playing is, in most cases, not between you and the casino, but between you and yourself.” You will find plenty of temptations to keep you playing and losing; therefore, you must develop a sense of timing or
awareness (i.e. discipline) of when to play, and more importantly, when to quit.”
Here are some specific tips that you can use to avoid the casino’s psychological traps that doom players into losing.
—If you are tired from a long drive or flight, now is not the best time to hit the tables. Play only when you are rested and alert.
—Watch the alcohol consumption when you play. From the casino’s perspective, there’s a reason why they offer players free alcoholic drinks (if you don’t know the reason, I’d strongly recommend you stay away from the blackjack tables).
—If you get ahead, don’t be caught in the trap of thinking that you are betting with the “casino’s money.” Once the chips go from the casino’s chip tray to your side of the table, that’s now your money and not the casino’s.
—Keep track of time and set reasonable win goals. Unless you are a card counter, the odds are stacked against you so be content with a modest win. If you manage to get ahead by, say, 30% or more of your starting bankroll, pocket half of your profit plus what you started with, and play with the rest. This way, even if you lose “the rest,” you’ll still be able to go home with a profit.
—Set a stop loss…and discipline yourself to quit playing if you reach it. You have nothing to be ashamed of if you have a losing session. The casinos will always be open for you to try your luck again, hopefully, with better results.
—There’s a reason that you bet chips and not cash in a casino. If you were to put down a couple of ten- or twenty-dollar bills on the felt as a bet, you might think twice about doing it. However, once your cash is converted to chips, players often lose sight of the fact that those chips represent hard-earned money. Betting chips rather than cash makes it easy for players to over-bet their bankroll, resulting in a quick and painful losing session.
—The odds of winning the next hand don’t change just because you lost the previous hands.
—If you run into a buzz-saw dealer, who consistently draws to 20 and 21 and beats the table, quit, and take a break. Relax, catch your breath, and try your luck at another table.
There are, of course, other things that doom blackjack players (playing games with lousy rules, and not using the right playing strategy) but if you follow the above tips, you will at least eliminate the casino’s psychological traps.
What's News in Nevada . . .
Vegas Saved the Day For J-Lo
Jennifer Lopez told Jimmy Kimmel on a recent airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live that due to the catastrophe of her first attempt to marry Ben Affleck in 2004, she was experiencing a bit of PTSD while planning the second wedding after getting back together in 2021. So, Ben stepped up and suggested eloping that same night in July and getting married in Vegas. As widely reported at the time, the superstar couple waited in line with other people for their marriage license, then tied the knot at A Little White Wedding Chapel at midnight. “It was the best night of our lives,” Jen told Kimmel. The couple had a bigger ceremony a month later, but the pressure was off. They were already married and very, very happy.
U2 Plan an Extravagant Show
The Irish Sun recently reported that U2 is “at an advanced stage for agreeing to an Elvis-style residency in a Las Vegas hotel.” The rumor is that U2 will open the MSG Sphere later this year. The Sun writes that front-man Bono told the SmartLess podcast, “We haven’t signed off on it, but if we do and can pull off what we’re talking about, it’s not like anything we’ve ever done before. It’s nothing like Las Vegas has ever seen before.” The band is known for its spectacular stage shows and effects and the Sphere is shaping up to be the most spectacular entertainment venue on Earth. If both happen according to plan, the combination will no doubt be as extravagant as it’s possible to be.
Horror Attraction Announced
A major new attraction has been announced by Universal for Las Vegas. According to Bloomberg, a “111,000-square-foot, yearround, horror-focused attraction” will be the anchor tenant in a 20-acre expansion of Area15.
“Universal has long offered seasonal Halloween Horror Nights that attract young adults to its theme parks in the fall,” Bloomberg writes. “The company’s movie studio was home to films based on classic characters like Frankenstein and Dracula. More recently, it has carved out a niche working with a new generation of horror-film producers and directors such as Jason Blum, Jordan Peele, and James Wan. Content from both historical and upcoming films will be featured in the Las Vegas property.” Concept art with the press release features Jack the Clown, a Halloween Horror Nights icon, welcoming guests into a decrepit building with red light glowing from within. An Area15 spokesperson told the ReviewJournal that they hope to break ground on the expansion in the next six months.
WNBA 2023 All-Star Game in Vegas
The WNBA announced that the league’s 2023 All-Star Game will take place in Las Vegas at the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay on July 15. The game and all the attending events will be hosted by the hometown team, Las Vegas Aces, which won the WNBA Championship last season. It’s the third time Las Vegas will host the WNBA’s midseason showcase, most recently in 2021.

Both Naxos Taverna and Kallisto Oyster Bar will specialize in seafood. You can see the menus (without prices) and make reservations at naxosredrock.com.

March Lore and Leprechauns
As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction. – An Old Irish Saying
In like a lion and out like a lamb and vice versa. So goes the March weather if you believe in superstitions; and I do.
Good luck or bad luck? How to achieve the first and avoid the second? That is the question which March brings to the forefront with St. Pat’s Day on the 17th and the little green leprechauns associated with it. If you catch a leprechaun, you may be able to trick him out of some of his gold, but beware. They are grouchy, untrusting, and solitary creatures who do not part with their riches easily. The trick is to trick them into willingly giving you some of their wealth; but be careful because they are devious and deceitful. If you anger one, he is apt to spoil your milk, cause your kids to talk backwards, or doom you to be a perpetual loser at bingo. Eeek! I don’t remember meeting one, old and confused as I am, but who knows? Could that explain my long losing streaks?
Another March day with luck attached to it, but not the good kind, is March 25th. Apparently, it carries a curse that involves of all things, flour. We are to donate a sack of flour to the poor on this day or suffer the collapse of our houses; lose our money; and jeepers
creepers, have seven sons born to us followed by seven daughters. Whoa, fourteen children and no money, not to mention flour we need for cooking for those fourteen kids? Don’t chance it; head to the nearest market and stock up before March 25th.
There are a slew of other superstitions about which I want to warn you, so you are protected and not clueless as to the vagaries of good/bad luck. Bad luck harbingers include dropping a dishcloth, wearing opals if they are not your birthstone, rocking an empty rocking chair, and finding and picking up a tail up penny; all no no’s. As for good luck, it’s the usual such as finding a horseshoe, four leaf clovers, or carrying a rabbit’s foot. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) strongly object to the latter so better cross that one off the list. And remember, if your right-hand itches, money is on the way. If you’re traveling in other countries, avoid whistling in the evening so as not to attract snakes; don’t clip fingernails/toenails at night or you’ll attract ghosts; and lying down after a meal will turn you into a cow. Actually, looking in my mirror, I can see the truth of that last one.
Finally, a reminder that March 20th is Wellderly Day. Held on the third Monday of each March, we honor and celebrate our elders, senior citizens, or old poopsters which is how I refer to my husband and me. Created by Dr. Dale Anderson, its purpose is to promote a healthy lifestyle for those of us who are no longer spring chickens, or as in my husband’s case, an old rooster. So, take grandpa, grandma, or any oldsters you can roust up off the couch to bingo. It will exercise their minds and just being asked will be good for them emotionally. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. This old poopster enjoys your E-mails (nlpvzw6172@gmail. com). Keep them coming.
