It didn’t take long for this month’s winner to find out that her name was drawn.
Kathrine Stanislawski had just walked into Saint Joeseph’s in Big Bend on May 3rd when her friend Laverne said that her name was on page 11 of the Bingo Bugle. Kathrine and her husband Dave have been playing bingo for over 30 years, sometimes they play bingo five days a week and even twice in a day. Moose 49 Milwaukee, American Legion Post 416 Greendale, Knights of Columbus in South Milwaukee, Pioneer Bingo at Taj Palace, Tichigan Lions, Saint Joseph’s Big Bend, and Saint Francis Lions are places they frequent. Cracked Balls Cause Chaos
Dear Aunt Bingo,
There was a big blowup today at Bingo when two games into the second session a player near the caller noticed a cracked Bingo ball in the blower. They stopped the machine and emptied it and found not one, but three, cracked balls. Two of them were split so badly that there was barely a speck of plastic holding the pieces together.
The Bingo operator was very apologetic, but most of the players weren’t interested in her apologies…we were all too busy searching for our Bingo paper from the first session. It was total chaos as people dumped out the used Bingo paper from the trash bags and began digging through for sheets with matching serial numbers. Then players began checking to see if the damaged balls had been called.
As you’d expect, one of the balls, O-71, never came up. Everyone who had an O-71 on their sheets (and there were a LOT of us) were quite upset.
The people running the Bingo offered a partial refund, which some players liked but others rejected. They said they couldn’t give full refunds to everyone because they’d already paid out prize money—which the winners made clear they were not going to give back. There were a number of other suggestions, but no one could agree on anything.
Finally, after at least a half an hour of all this, a group of players
said they were sick of waiting and demanded their money back, and that if they didn’t get it they were calling the police! More players joined them and finally the manager—who looked so stressed I began worrying about her health—gave in, ended the games, and agreed to refund everyone’s money (except for the winners, of course!)
It must have taken at least another hour (probably more!) before all the players’ paper was verified and we got our money back. You never saw a more miserable group of people in your life—players and workers alike.
—Anna C., via email
Dear Anna,
What a nightmare! Your story describes a “perfect storm” of unfortunate circumstances, resulting in a terrible day at Bingo for everyone involved. Such a shame. I am not sure what the specific rules are regarding examining the Bingo balls before the start of the games, but clearly someone at that hall failed to do so…miserably.
Someone has to put all the balls in the tray to confirm there is a complete set before releasing them into the chamber. That means that each ball was handled individually by someone, and that someone failed to notice that three of them were severely damaged. Not good. It strikes me that the Bingo operator really had no choice but to call an end to the games and refund everyone’s money. Legally, I assume they couldn’t add sessions or start from scratch with all new paper and Bingo balls. (Would they even have other Bingo balls to substitute?) Plus, doing that would result in the loss of even more money.
My sincere hope is that players will see this as an unfortunate accident and will not punish this Bingo by boycotting it in the future. My heart also goes out to the Bingo workers who volunteered to be there and did not sign on for such drama. Let’s hope they return as well and help keep the games going, but with stricter protocols for sure. —Aunt Bingo
Stolen Valor, Stolen Benefits
How, one wonders, does something like this happen? How does a civilian collect $146,000 in VA benefits for allegedly having been wounded and held a prisoner of war in Iraq when he’s never even served in the military?
The story: A civilian has been charged with taking education, health and disability benefits after he claimed to be a Marine who was wounded in combat and held as a prisoner of war in Iraq. He claimed to have been wounded in an IED (improvised explosive device) attack and was then captured. He claimed he’d been awarded the Purple Heart, Prisoner of War medal and several others.
To apply for all those benefits and cash, he would have needed a DD214 as well as other paperwork. To keep from delaying the handing out of benefits and cash, the VA lets veterans use their own documents when they submit applications.
Sometimes people lie and turn in fake documents. Over time he turned in a pile of those fake documents, including the DD214 and certificates for his stack of alleged medals.
But that’s where this criminal’s story should have fallen apart. I can see accepting a veteran’s initial documents to get him started on the benefits, but to let the fraud go on for five long years? Surely someone could have looked up the details to verify the Purple Heart and prisoner of war status? Did no one bother to check to see if he’d even been in the military?
Eventually the criminal got greedy and applied for educational benefits on top of the cash he received each month for his alleged physical injuries, receiving monthly subsistence payments and payments to the university.
If that wasn’t enough, he then applied for an increase in the disability payments.
How is it no one spotted this fraud long ago?

Crazy Comedy
We have one set of friends, Monica and Marcia, who are twins and are fun to be around as they have some interesting moves. They have long, light brown hair and blue eyes that twinkle with mischief, merriment and delight. They like to mirror each other and others as well. That means they copy what you are doing and do it along with you. This is fun for a while but can get pretty annoying if it goes on too long.
We all went to Bingo recently and were having a really uproarious time when the twins started mirroring. First, they picked out an elderly lady at our table who didn’t realize for a while what was going on. Marcia backed off but Monica kept it up long after it had ceased
being funny. The elderly lady started looking around for another place to sit. Then the woman won, and Monica mirrored her joy until the lady turned to her and said, “Stop it,” in a tone of voice no one could miss.
“Oh, I was just having fun,” protested Monica.
“Well, enough is enough,” said the woman firmly and thankfully Monica did back off.
Until the next one, that is. She picked a man sitting at a near table and began mirroring him. At first, he thought she might be flirting and began to get fussed as he was sitting with his wife. Then when he realized what she was doing, he turned his back to her very pointedly, but it was difficult for him to play his cards turned away as he was. At intermission he and his wife moved to a far table.
But Monica was not through with her mischief. She picked a young woman at the next table and began by twisting her hair as the young woman was doing, then fussing with her daubers and finally flicking a nonexistent bit of stuff off her blouse. She would not actually mirror during a game but as soon as it was over, she was at it again. This time the young woman won, and Monica announced that she was good luck to any who would let her mirror.
“No, you are not good luck,” said Marcia disgustedly, “You are just being a pain in the butt.”
A floor worker came over to see what was up, but Monica
just smiled and charmed her into believing all was well.
The next person she picked to mirror was not about to be nice. She called a floor worker over immediately and reported Monica as making trouble. She was a middl- aged woman who did not want her night out spoiled by Monica’s shenanigans.
Then Marcia decided to help. “She was just practicing for our show,” she told the floor worker. “That’s right, we do a short comedy routine that we planned to show the folks here.”
The floor worker had an “oh, yeah” expression on her face but went along with all this and talked the caller into letting the twins perform.
They went to the caller’s stand and did a five-minute stint that was hilarious. They mirrored each other miming getting dressed for work in girdle, panty hose and strappy shoes. They were a riot struggling into their girdles and making hard work of getting into panty hose. They made ridiculous facial expressions as they struggled with imaginary clothes. Finally, they put on their hats and were off the stage.
It was so good…they got much applause and congratulations.
“We’ve been wanting to try that out somewhere,” said Monica, “but we never thought it would be at a Bingo joint.”
And we finished the evening laughing.

empty chairs. And, folks, it isn’t because our friends have “passed away”—they died. When I first started doing radio news in 1965 people died. No one passed away back then. I even had a journalism professor at Indiana University who would go into a rage if any student wrote that a person had passed away, followed by a simple speech: “They don’t pass away, go to their great reward, tear the veil, breathe their last breath, buy the farm, go to a better place, shuffle off this mortal coil, cash in their chips, cross the River Styx.....they simply DIE.” He would always add, “As journalists, it is not our job to comfort…we are here to report, and people simply die.”
Obviously, I have never forgotten his instructions. I still cringe when my local radio station says that someone has passed away; I have given the manager clear
instructions that when I die, his listeners should be told that I died. I didn’t pass away. Ye Gods, I hate that phrase.
OK, lecture over. I bring all this up because I want to pay tribute to a former roommate of mine in Las Vegas. His name was Michael. He not only was a constant companion of mine at Bingo, he was the one who stood by me in the months after my open-heart surgery. In many was he saved my life.
We were seen together so often that many people thought we were boyfriends...an easy assumption since both of us were gay—but we were simply roommates.
Six months after my surgery I was finally on the mend. Michael and I began a performance group and recreated Old Time Radio shows for nursing homes. It was great fun, then, one day Michael died.
Simple as that. He died. It was then that I moved back to my hometown in Indiana and, last month, into a nine-story senior high-rise apartment building. My window (on the 8th floor) has a wonderful view of my hometown. I can even see the old school where I first played Bingo in 1957.
The other day I took some photos from my window. I thought out loud: “Ah, I ought to send some of these to Michael…nope…can’t do that.”
But I have no doubt that Michael has been watching me—and he has seen all of it. There are so many good friends whose chairs are now empty at Bingo. Take the next thirty seconds to quietly think about them...and what they brought into our lives. The thirty seconds starts NOW.

How to Find Volunteers
Hi Guy,
We’re having trouble with recruiting volunteers for Bingo and wondered if you had any ideas. The Bingo is sponsored by a high school PTA and generates money for various student/school activities.
—Vince L., via email
Hi Vince,
If you are a PTA, I would assume that the volunteer workers you currently have are parents and teachers. If you are looking to expand your volunteer workforce beyond that, I have several suggestions.
First off: grandparents and
JWKOLP
students (if state law allows). Grandparents who are retired may have the extra time and interest in getting involved with your Bingo. It would be a real incentive for them to know that they are enhancing their grandchildren’s education and life experience. As far as tapping the students, I think this is a no-brainer. Parents invest so much time and energy in raising their kids that I think sometimes they become blind to opportunities for their kids to do something for themselves.
Unrelated retired folks may also be looking for ways to be of service, so be sure to check in at your local senior center.
Reach out to social and professional clubs, campusbased sororities and fraternities, membership groups, and community groups. All of these can be excellent volunteer resources.
There are also sites online, like VolunteerMatch.com, that could prove useful, and resources to help you to retain the volunteers you do have.
Finally, the players themselves. If you let them know that your operation needs volunteers to keep the game alive, perhaps a few would like to step up on occasion and help out.
The bottom line is, charity bingo needs volunteers to survive, so finding them, and keeping them should be a top priority for everyone who loves the game. —Guy
* It’s tough to eat home-cooked meals as a single eater. Most recipes are geared for multiple portions, and you probably don’t want to eat the same thing for five days straight. Try this: Get together with some friends and have a potluck. Each guest brings an entree and at least two side dishes, in extra-large portions, and his or her own leftovers containers. Split the food up amongst the guests, packaged as meals. Everyone can cook once and eat for a week.
* “If your baby gets very rashy on her backside, try to give her some ‘air time’ each day. Just an hour a day with no diaper has made a big difference in my baby girl’s rash.”

* “Leftover dry erase calendars make good bingo card bases. Cut out a five by five section, and use a permanent marker to fill the squares with small random numbers. Make matching call cards from the unused squares. Place the call cards in a sandwich baggie and the rest in a larger plastic bag. Include a couple dry erase markers, and you have a set that can be used anywhere (ours is in the car) over and over again.” — E.W. and S.D. in Oregon

Super Bad Blackjack Advice
Several years ago, I wrote an article that contained misinformation about blackjack that originated from players, dealers, movies, and the Internet. I thought I had heard and read all the nonsensical misconceptions about blackjack that have been spoken or written over the past 50 years; however, I was wrong, dead wrong.
That’s because I recently received a print magazine published in the USA for casino players that contained an article on blackjack strategy, which floored me.
The author wrote about a “few golden rules that have made a big difference in how I play from a strategic point of view.” Here is some of the author’s “wisdom.”
“To get started, you need to understand that it is a fact that each player at a blackjack table has a significant role in how the game will go…The first thing to consider when taking a seat at a blackjack table is where you want to sit and what responsibility you want to hold at the table. The first seat (first base) and last seat (third base) of the table pretty much determine the way the game will go down. If these two players do not know the basic strategy rules of the game, then the odds will be altered for every player at the table.” The author continues with more incredibly wrong advice, such as the following. “First base sets the tone for the whole table. If the dealer has anything between 3 and 6 showing, the table should not take any unnecessary cards that could end up being the dealer’s bust card needed for the dealer.”
To say I was flabbergasted about what the author had written, and the publisher who published it, is an understatement. I also felt sorry for blackjack players who read this article believing the above “strategy advice” was accurate. I’ve already emailed the publisher of the magazine about the article; now I intend to state the facts about what a player should know before taking a seat at a blackjack table. Let me begin with the misconception that players who misplay their hands (i.e., do not use the basic playing strategy) will “alter the odds for every
player.” The fact is this: Blackjack is not a team sport. In the long run, the bad play of other players does not affect the house edge against you.
Don’t believe me? Take a gander at these studies done by two different blackjack experts.
My friend Michael Shackleford, who is recognized internationally as an expert on the mathematical analysis of casino games including blackjack, conducted a random computer simulation to “prove the myth that bad players cause other players to lose at a higher rate in blackjack.” He published the results on his own website.
Shackleford programmed his software to, what were then, standard liberal Vegas Strip rules. This included: six decks; dealer stands on soft 17; double on any first two cards allowed; double after pair splitting allowed; late surrender allowed; and the player may re-split to four hands, including aces.
In the first 1.6 billion computersimulated rounds, two players followed the correct basic playing strategy on every hand. The player who acted first had an expectation of –0.289%, and the second player’s expectation was –0.288% (both essentially the same, as expected).
In the second 1.05 billion-hand simulation, the first player followed the same correct basic playing strategy, while the second player to act (call him the clueless player) followed the same strategy except for these idiotic plays: always hit 12 to 16; always double 9 to 11; split any pair; never surrender; never soft double.
I trust that you agree that this represents a clueless blackjack player. According to the author of the magazine article, the expectation of the player playing correctly should be much worse due to the poor play of the other player. Yet, this was the result of Shackleford’s second study.
• The clueless player’s expectation decreased to –11.26%, which was expected because of his foolish play.
• However, the expectation of the basic strategy player was –0.282%, which is essentially unchanged.
This proves, without any doubt, that the poor play of another player will not alter your long-term expectation (or odds of winning) when you play blackjack.
Yes, but I know what many of you are probably thinking right now. It’s along the lines of: “Last week when I played blackjack, a clueless player on third base hit his 14 against a dealer four upcard and drew a picture card and busted. The dealer subsequently flipped over their down card, which was a 10 giving them 14. The next card she drew was a seven for a 21, which beat the table. If that moron on third base would have stood on his 14, like he was supposed to, the dealer would have gotten the picture card and busted, and we would have all been winners.”
Unfortunately, most casino players have “selective memory.” They’ll remember losing one (or more) hands as the result of another player’s misplaying his or her hand. Moreover, some players will berate the third-base player for making a boneheaded play.
However, suppose the two cards in the shoe were reversed; namely, the third-base player took a hit and received the 7 for a 21, and the dealer subsequently received the picture card and busted.
Would any of the players
congratulate the third-base player for “saving the table by hitting his 14”? I doubt it. This is what I mean by selective memory. You remember the “bad beats” that sometimes occur when you play blackjack, and you want to blame someone for your losses. However, the fact is this: Every time a player misplays his hand, 50% of the time it could “hurt” other players and 50%, it could “help” them. In the end, it’s a wash, meaning statistically bad players do not change the odds or the house edge against a basic strategy player.

Dive-In Movies Return
The Cosmopolitan has announced this summer’s schedule for its annual “Dive-In Movie” night on Mondays, running through September 9. This is a great way to check out Cosmo’s third-floor pool deck and catch a flick at the same time, especially on a hot summer night in the water. The doors open at 7 p.m., the movie starts at 8, and it’s absolutely free if you have an Identity players card; otherwise, it’s $15, $10 for locals. You can also reserve cabanas and daybeds, though lounge seating is free and first-come first-served. Reservations can be made online. If you’re there for Labor Day weekend, seeing The Hangover on September 2 would be appropriate.
PopStroke Mini Golf Opens
PopStroke Mini Golf’s 14th location in five states opened recently on Las Vegas Blvd. across the Strip from Town Square just south of Mandalay Bay. The two 18-hole mini-golf courses each take 45-60 minutes to complete, depending on your number of players. The putter and TaylorMade golf balls are included in the day-pass price: $24 kids 3-12, $32 seniors, $40 adults; hours are 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The full-service restaurant opens at 11 a.m. and serves a breakfast burrito ($8), tenders ($12), wings ($15), burgers, sandwiches, and wraps ($14-$16), tacos ($16-$18), and salads ($16-$21). There’s also an ice cream parlor, playground, Jumbotrons, and more.
Two Vegas Bars Honored Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, a non-profit platform that
“accelerates the growth of the spirits industry through forward-thinking partnerships and mentorship programs,” also sponsors a global cocktail competition and presents annual Spirited Awards, which recognize beverage professionals, products, establishments, and media throughout the world. Among the 11-state U.S. West regional top-10 honorees for 2024 are the Ski Lodge at Superfrico at the Cosmopolitan, winning a nod as one of the Best U.S. Hotel Bars. This is a hidden bar behind one of the many doors you confront as you enter Superfrico; a classic apres-ski-themed establishment, it’s about as far away from the center Strip as you can be. Cleaver restaurant at 3900 Paradise Road received a Best U.S. Restaurant Bar award. Serving steak, seafood, and classic cocktails, Cleaver is a sister restaurant to Herbs & Rye, owned by famed bartender and restaurateur Nectaly Mendoza, that opened in 2022.
Weekly Summer Fireworks
The Plaza, known for its New Year’s Eve and July 4th fireworks, is upping the ante with a weekly pyrotechnic display that runs through the summer. Citing downtown’s party atmosphere and inspired by the long tradition at Disneyland, the “several minutes” worth of fireworks will take place at 9:15 every Friday between May 24 (Memorial Day weekend) and August 30 (Labor Day weekend). Of course, the shows will depend on the weather, but other than a monsoon squall, they should go off regularly without a hitch. All reporting by lasvegasadvisor. com

Boomers and Bingo
Some of you are too young to have taken pictures with a camera, not a phone, then waited two weeks to find out they were useless. —snarkEcards
Boom, boom, boomer! That’s me, a baby boomer, as are my husband and most of my friends, all of us birthed between 1946 and 1964. This is mentioned because Baby Boomers Recognition Day was originally held in June, later changed to August 17 so as not to interfere with Father’s Day. After WW2 ended in 1945, America’s soldiers came home with the result being three million infants born; breaking our country’s birth record. Us boomers have lived through many impactful events including the first manned space mission and lunar landing and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, Jr. On the other hand, and to avoid being a Nancy Negative, some of us remember fondly other events such as Woodstock, 1969. Around 500,000 people gathered near Bethel, New York, to celebrate music, peace, love, and rock & roll over a weekend; many of the revelers cavorting minus clothes. Oh mercy. People started arriving three days early and the roadways soon became clogged so hundreds of them walked an average of fifteen miles into the festival grounds. I’m trying to
imagine the available bathroom facilities, but I’m afraid if I do, the image will burn itself into my brain forever. I was not in attendance at Woodstock because my then husband and I were living on an air force base in Turkey. It was there that I was introduced to playing bingo for money and prizes at the NCO club. What a concept and the cost was around $10 or so. I was in love and eagerly anticipated each week’s game. Once a month or so, the bingo prize was an authentic woven Turkish rug. I actually won two of them and would you believe still use them in my home today. They are as beautiful now as they were then and we walk on them daily.
Moving on, I want to point out that June 22nd is Stupid Guy Thing Day created by Thomas Roy and promoted on his Wellcat Holidays web resource. I was surprised that there is a designated day honoring what most ladies know is a common occurrence with the men in our lives. We all know what I’m talking about; assembling furniture/appliances without reading instructions; not going to a doctor when sick but whining about feeling bad; declining to stop and ask for driving directions; refusing to ask a store clerk for help to find an item. Or, most priceless of all, not listening to us, then after the sh%# hits the fan, saying: you should have told me about this. That’s why I bought a T-shirt that says: It’s me, it’s my fault, I’m the problem. I wear it proudly as I secretly know it’s always my husband’s fault even if he refuses to admit it. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. And don’t forget Sunday, June 16th, is Father’s Day. Take dear old dad/stepdad/grandpa, and/or all those you love as a parent out to dinner and to play bingo. Share the love and love your guys, even though they do stupid things. LOL.
