Super Useful Tips
Dear Aunt Bingo, Here’s a tip for how to use old daubers for you! Empty daubers can be used for sealing envelopes. Just wash the bottle out and let dry, fill with water, and use daily to seal envelopes. Christmas card sealing is the most useful.
A Bingo Worker, Hobart, Indiana
Dear Bingo Worker, I love this idea! Until I read your letter, I was using a little stubby sponge water bottle I picked up at an office supply store. I’d used it so long the sponge was shredded and I was pretty sick of it. It never occurred to me that a dauber bottle was virtually the same thing! I now have one of my old dauber empties on my desk and it works like a charm. When the sponge starts to go, I’ll recycle it, grab another empty, and be back in business. Thanks for the terrific tip! —Aunt Bingo
Dear Aunt Bingo,
The number one thing that drives me crazy about Bingo is the parking. It seems like no matter what hall I go to the parking situation is chaos. There are never enough spaces, people park all zigzag and careless, and you risk life and limb trying to drive in or drive out. Would you please mention this in your column so that hall managers will do something about it?
Dented Fender, Ohio, via e-mail
Dear Dented,
Those parking lots sure can get crazy, can’t they? Personally, I think the halls with limited parking would be wise to have someone outside to direct traffic and make the most of their parking area. If this can’t be implemented, you might consider getting to the lot earlier, before the traffic gets heavy, and grabbing one of the better spots for exiting quickly. You might also consider waiting until the rush has subsided, then leave yourself.
A friend of mine always gets to Bingo early, backs into a good parking spot, and sits in her car reading and listening to music until it’s time to go in. At the end of the games she stays in her seat and chats with friends and has a snack she bought from the Bingo kitchen. After about fifteen minutes or so, the lot is almost empty, and she heads home without dramas or mishap. If you can afford the extra time, it’s a great system. —Aunt Bingo

PACT Act Benefits
A half-million claims have been filed under the PACT Act for exposure to toxins. So far, over $1 billion has been paid in benefits. And that’s just since last August, when the act was signed.
Three million veterans have had their new screenings since then, and nearly half of them had exposures. Since last August, 215,000 veterans have signed up for Department of Veterans Affairs health care, a big increase over the previous year. And this fiscal year alone (starting last October), the VA has paid out over $65 billion on compensation benefits.
With the PACT Act, any subsequent illnesses are presumptive, meaning that it’s assumed that your health condition is caused by exposure to toxins if you were in certain locations at certain times. The act adds over 20 new presumptives to the list.
The list of illnesses from exposure to toxins are serious: cancers of the brain, head, kidney, neck, pancreas and many more. Less serious are allergic
rhinitis, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and others. Of the five conditions most frequently claimed via the PACT Act, hypertensive vascular disease tops the list, with 80% of claims granted.
To read more about the PACT Act, go to the dashboard at www. accesstocare.va.gov/healthcare/ pactact. Info is updated there every other Friday. A recent issue of the dashboard says that wrapping up PACT claims is taking an average of 156 days. At that time, 45.6% of claims were at over 125 days of being completed, and the approval rate was 80%. Be sure to scroll down the page, as there is a lot of info.
Additionally, you can check va.gov/pact or call them at 800MYVA411.
Note: The VA wants us to sign up for PACT benefits. If we do this before Aug. 10, 2023, the benefits will likely be backdated a year, to Aug. 10, 2022. Mark that date on your calendar and don’t let it slip by if you intend to file for PACT benefits. In fact, why don’t you get started now?

PICKS OF THE MONTH
FUBAR (TV-MA) — Action movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger has a new spy-adventure series, which is the longtime actor’s first leading role in a scripted live-action series. Schwarzenegger plays Luke, a recently retired CIA operative who gets sucked into one last, relatively simple mission. The catch? Well, once Luke arrives on site, he realizes his daughter, Emma (Monica Barbaro), also works for the CIA and that the two have been lying to each other for years. Now, as they take on the mission together in a much different way than they expected, their bond as father and daughter truly starts to form. (Netflix)
The Secrets of Hillsong (NR) — This four-part documentary series dives into the scandals surrounding the Christian megachurch Hillsong. The Hillsong Church campus established in New York City aimed to draw in millennials and Gen Zers, mostly due to former lead pastor Carl Lentz’s efforts. Lentz then went on to become a spiritual advisor to

many celebrities, including Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez, before he was dismissed amid an infidelity scandal. This documentary explores the darksided atmosphere attached to Hillsong, with serious allegations of sexual abuse and abuses of power from pastors like Lentz. (Hulu)
Platonic (TV-MA) — The duo who led Neighbors, Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, are teaming up again — this time for a comedy series. Byrne and Rogen respectively play Sylvia and Will, a pair of best friends who reconnect after years apart. Sylvia’s a family woman now, but Will, who just went through a recent divorce, is in an entirely different stage of his life. So, as their friendship takes off again, the two must find the right balance between Will’s shenanigans and Sylvia’s family to prove that a man and a woman can maintain a platonic relationship.

The Rules
According to Bobbi
Bobbi loves to play Bingo, but she is adamant about the rules of conduct. I did not realize that it was not okay to mark your free space if the game did not call for it as in four corners. I did not know it was not all right to put a small dot on the card where I was “on.” I did not know it was forbidden to chant the number you want called. All these things I learned to call “Bobbi Rules.”
Bobbi is always perfectly dressed and made up. She is free with her advice and ready to help whenever and wherever she thinks necessary. She is a roaring pain in the tail. I try not to sit near her, but sometimes that cannot be avoided.
Last month she came to Bingo with her reluctant husband, Harold. He is not as enthusiastic about Bingo as she is, but he does love
to socialize, snack and join in the uproar. She does not let him have the snacks he would prefer. When he accepts an offered potato chip, she scowls and reminds him that his cholesterol level is very high. He grins and munches the forbidden goody. When someone celebrates a birthday and provides cake, she insists that he refuse to taste it and if he does anyway, she does not let him enjoy it. He seems to be a much-nagged person, but he is fiercely loyal to her.
Last week we played at the same table and Harold smiled affably as ladies surrounded him. Bobbi unloaded her carryall and set out plastic bags of celery, carrots and Cheerios. She has her recyclable daubers and her especially “pure” bottled water. Frankly, she wears me out before we even get started.
spaces unless required and how to place her daubers for greatest speed and accessibility. The newcomer gave me a look and I rolled my eyes, which caused her to burst into laughter.
“Does it need to be this complicated?” asked the newbie.
Bobbi turned slightly away and sniffed. “Only if you want to do it correctly.” This made me giggle. The newbie offered her hand and said her name was Wendy.
“Oh, good,” I replied. “I haven’t had a Wendy-friend in ages,” and we made hand-shaking gestures in the air, as we couldn’t quite reach.
I discovered right away that Wendy has a terrific sense of humor and we were soon laughing over Bobbi’s obvious disapproval.
“You are too serious,” I said to Bobbi, “Relax and enjoy yourself.”
“I can’t just relax,” replied Bobbi. “This is about money and winning and doing it right!”

As I shook my head and took off for the snack bar I could hear her extolling the virtues of water as a great restorative and healer. I felt a little guilty returning with my coffee and roll especially after Harold eyed it enviously.
Unfortunately, there was a new player at our table and Bobbi quickly explained how to arrange everything, how not to daub free
Then Bobbi was on for the Big Red Blackout. I could see her lips moving repeating the number she wanted. Then Wendy picked it up and began chanting as well, so I joined in. What could it hurt I thought—it seemed like she could really benefit from a win at bingo.
Her number appeared in the screen and we held our breaths waiting for someone to Bingo. Her luck held and we, all three, shouted “Bingo!” as her number was called. Thank god, I thought. Now maybe she will loosen up a bit and let us all enjoy ourselves.

We Have a Lot to Celebrate
Hi, again, everyone. I got a wonderful e-mail at bingo@ earthlink.net from a reader in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, named Eli. He says that he was
watching coverage the other day of Russia’s brutal treatment of Ukraine, and he had a sudden thought. Eli continues: “The next time I nearly miss hitting a big one at Bingo, I will think of the millions of people around the world— because of war or famine or other miseries—who never get to play Bingo or have any fun at all. How lucky I am, to be an American.”
You are very correct, Eli, we are lucky to be Americans. And, you put me in mind of another point. We need to invite newcomers into our Bingo community, whether they be from just down the road or from some foreign land.
My ancestors were from Ireland. They escaped the Great Potato Famine in 1847 by fleeing from Cork, Ireland, to America. They took the worst jobs and dug ditches, shoveled excrement and dug canals when no one else was willing to do the work. One of those
people from Cork was newspaper columnist Dugan McWiley. He loved to tell classic stories about the Irish in America.
In one column he noted that many wealthy American families in the 1800s, still seeped in racial prejudice and discrimination, thought it was be more acceptable to hire a young Irish girl as a servant or maid, rather than a girl of color. He noted that at one home, a young Irish girl named Molly McSwane was working for a Mrs. Hanson in a big house in San Francisco when Mrs. Hanson yelled at Molly: “Molly, this piano is so covered with dust, I can write my name on the lid.” Molly smiled and said: “Ah, Mrs. Hanson, it must be nice to be that educated.”
But, here in America, no matter where we live, no matter how we pray, no matter the color of our skin or our nation of origin, we are FREE TO PLAY BINGO. Millions
around the world can’t say that. We are free to assemble where we wish and see old friends.
And, we play Bingo for FIVE REASONS: 1...to get out of the house. 2...to eat strange and wonderful food that sometimes we would never eat anywhere else. 3...to laugh at our friends. 4...to have some suspense and anticipation and excitement. And, finally, 5...to OCCASIONALLY win some money.
And remember, if you are playing at a charity Bingo hall, the money you bet goes to help that charity. All the employees are volunteers. They receive no compensation, unless the snack bar gives them some of that food that sometimes we would never eat anywhere else.
Be thinking of the best Bingo Caller or Employee in the world. See you next time around.

A No Show at Bingo
Dear Guy,
This may be the reverse of what you usually hear, but I like going to Bingo and would like to have my wife come with me. I see a lot of couples playing, and I think it would be fun to make friends with some Bingo couples. The problem is that my wife has zero interest in Bingo and brushes off the idea whenever I ask her to come along. Any ideas? —Fred from Michigan
Dear Fred,
There are Bingo people and nonBingo people. It sounds like you’ve married yourself a non-Bingo person, and that may just be that. However…
Maybe you could get her to go with you for some kind of special occasion—like your birthday. She might not refuse you then. At least it will get her into the hall, and she’ll play a few games and maybe start to like it. But prepare yourself for the equally likely fact that she’ll be just as disinterested as she was the day before.
Another idea might be to start mentioning the various women you’ve met at Bingo, and how Sally said this and Mary said that, etc. etc. She may get a little concerned about all these women friends you’re meeting and start going to Bingo just to keep an eye on you.

Standard Deviation Explained
Even the most highly skilled players suffer losing streaks (been there, done that). Sometimes the reason has nothing to do with not knowing basic strategy, or the “bad play” of your fellow players, or a “cheating dealer.”
No, the reason is due to what mathematicians call standard deviation (which I will refer to as SD).
If you’ve never heard of SD, don’t fret, because you are not alone. However, it is often the culprit that causes a player’s bankroll to swing wildly, so it’s important that you understand a little about SD. But I promise not to bore you too much math. Instead, I’ll show you how SD can be used to predict and understand the results of your playing sessions.
Basically, SD is a measure of the variance (or difference) between an actual result compared to an expected result. For example, how many heads would you expect if you flipped a coin 100 times? You probably said 50. However, in the real world it’s rare that your outcome would be exactly 50 heads (try it, and you’ll see). Most likely, you’ll wind up with more, or less, than 50 heads, and it’s unlikely that you’ll get the same result on each 100-coin-flip trial.
If you want to know beforehand how far away you most likely will be from exactly 50 heads (i.e., the outer boundary) you need to calculate the SD. In the case of our 100-trial coin-flip game, the math yields an SD of 5. This means that instead of ending up with exactly
50 heads as expected, you will probably end up in the range of 50 plus or minus 5 (1 SD), or between 45 and 55 heads. How probable is probable? For a large number of trials, one SD implies that in 68.3% of the trials you will wind up between plus and minus one SD from the expected result. If you want to know the probable result with more accuracy, you can calculate twice the SD, or 2SD (95.4% certainty), or 3SD (99.7% certainty).
(Note: Our 100-coin-flip example is not a very large trial, therefore, the percent probabilities will be slightly different than the above theoretical probabilities.)
Now let’s bet a buck on each coin flip. At the 2SD probable outcome, your result will be somewhere between 40 and 60 heads, about 95% of the time.
If heads comes up 60 times, you would be a winner of $20 (win one dollar on 60 flips and lose one dollar on 40 flips). If instead heads came up only 40 times, you’d wind up in the red by $20. In fact, about 95% of the time you would end up winning or losing between +$20 and -$20 after 100-coin flips, and only 5% of the time would your final outcome be a win or loss outside this range.
The point is that by calculating the SD you can predict how much money you should expect to be ahead or behind in this 100-trial coin-flip game with a fair degree of certainty.
What happens if you were to wind up losing $40 after 100-coin flips? I’d look carefully at the coin, because it is highly unlikely that you would be that far outside the 2SD lower boundary of -$20 if the game were fair.
So, what’s the lesson learned in all this? First, experiencing losing sessions as a basic strategy player is quite normal and should come as no surprise. The reason you have some winning and some losing sessions is due to the natural fluctuations of the game (i.e., SD). Secondly, in the short term you could experience many consecutive winning or losing sessions, because luck has a lot to do with your outcome. Thirdly, the longer you play, the more likely your final outcome will be a net loss, because the math in the casino’s favor will ultimately prevail over “luck.”
What's News in Nevada . . .
Franki Valli Residency
Frankie Valli and his all-new Four Seasons band will play a 14date residency at the Westgate, stretching over a period of a year. Valli is 89 and giving Tony Bennett a run for the oldest crooner to stop performing (Bennett, who’ll be 97 in August, performed his last concert in 2021 at age 95). The dates are October 26 and 27, then January 12, 13, and 14; April 4, 5, and 6; July 4, 5, and 6; and October 24, 25, and 26.
Herbs and Rye Makes 50 Best, Again
North America’s second-annual 50 Best Bars list ranked Herbs and Rye, the swanky 14-year-old American-Italian restaurant and cocktail bar on W. Sahara at Valley View (great late-night play, closing at 3 a.m., closed Sundays), at number 27. H&R moved up one spot from last year’s list, which seems significant, given that the competition includes all bars in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Four of the top 10 are in New York City, two in Mexico City, and one each in New Orleans, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles.
Get Lit?
Vegas Vic, the 70-plus-year-old neon sign that sits atop the former Pioneer Club and has been the symbol of downtown Las Vegas for decades with his cowboy hat, red bandana, and perpetual cigarette, hasn’t been illuminated for several months. The city has issued a citation for being in violation of the municipal sign code—to wit, “it must be fully illuminated from at least one hour before dusk until one hour after dawn.”
Korean Connection
Daeho Kalbijjim, a Korean restaurant out of San Francisco, opens this month in the Sahara Pavilion South complex (2620 S. Decatur). Also opening in the same
shopping center next year is the first Nevada location of the Korean grocery store chain H-Mart.
M Resort Buffet Returning?
If it’s true, it’ll be the biggest news in the Las Vegas buffet scene since the pandemic shutdown. There’s nothing specific, but rumblings are afoot that M Resort will be bringing back its immensely popular and eminently affordable Studio B Buffet. It would be an excellent move on M’s part, given the pent-up buffet demand that’s yet to be fulfilled by Las Vegas casinos. Perhaps the new Sunday brunch buffet at Anthony’s Prime Steak & Seafood at the M foretells the Studio B. It’s served Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $99. With lobster tail, beef Wellington, roast lamb, snow crab, and salmon.
Fontainebleau Opening in December No date has been set yet (it’s still five-six months away), but Fontainebleau Las Vegas announced that the megaresort will indeed open before the calendar rolls around into 2024, sometime in December. We imagine the owners and contractor are shooting for as early in the month as possible.

Stranger Things is an uber popular science fiction-horror-mystery series on Netflix that’s going into its fifth and final season. It involves a group of youngsters in Indiana in the 1980s who “witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits and, searching for answers, unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries.” A retail store owned by Netflix that’s based on the show opened at the Showcase Mall in May where fans can interact with some “iconic locations.” Open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday till 8 p.m.

No Binkies for Me!
I tried on a bikini and looked in the mirror. Made the wise decision to wear it as a bracelet instead. — Anonymous
July 1, 1862, gave us a momentous occasion to celebrate with a margarita; or many margaritas. NOT! Specifically, the Bureau of Internal Revenue Service was established. Oh, for the joy of it all, and 81 years later on July 1, 1943, taxes began to be withheld from our paychecks. Fast forward to this month when taxes have increased so much that we are lucky to pay our bills, drink a house margarita on cheap night, and still afford to play bingo on a regular basis. Bah humbug to this day in history.
On the other hand, July 5th is National Bikini Day. In the 1940s a Frenchman designed a two-piece bathing suit, a bikini, referencing Bikini Island where the US tested atomic bombs. It makes me laugh when I hear the word bikini because when these suits first became popular, my dad called them binkies. He knew the correct pronunciation, but both he and I thought calling them binkies was hilarious.
The first bikinis used about 30 square inches of fabric while those made today are barely there, if you grasp my meaning. An early ad campaign claimed a bikini wasn’t a real bikini unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring; no problem with today’s version. In 1960 the first bikinis inspired the song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie
Yellow Polka Dot Bikini by Brian Hyland and it sold a million copies in the US. Later, a follow-up song to the hit was released by teenager, Jeri Lynne Fraser. It answered the question in the original song of what happened next and was titled Poor Begonia Caught Pneumonia Not surprising, and it’s also no surprise that there are few to none bikini clad swimmers in Alaska or other frigid zones. So, ladies, I’ll pass, but the rest of you put on your binkies as my dad would say and get outside in the sunshine. Guys, all you need do is tastefully and politely appreciate and enjoy the beautiful women of all shapes and sizes who are wearing them. Oops, I forgot to mention that July 2 is I Forgot Day. This holiday is right up my alley because if I don’t write important stuff down, I’ll forget it. My forgetfulness isn’t age related because I’ve been this way since I was a tiny teen. As a teacher, I would put an X with soap on my home’s bathroom mirror. This reminded me if I had a staff meeting, or whatever that day. I still do this for reminders, and it works great. I Forgot Day is also a good time to forget past sins and hurtful episodes done to you by others; and by you to others. Start anew by offering apologies to those you hurt in some way; forgive those who did you wrong. Apologize, forgive, forget. You’ll feel better if you do.
Lastly, July 11 is Cheer Up the Lonely Day, created by Francis Pesek. He promoted kindness toward others who are lonely, forgotten, or shut-in. We should strive to follow his example and make a difference in someone’s life by spending time, hugging, listening, and talking with those who might need a friend. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. For suggestions, comments, and cyber hugs, email nlpvzw6172@ gmail.com.
