Richard loved his time as a member of the Knights of Columbus, participating in volunteer charitable work. For recreation and fellowship with friends, he played sheepshead on Thursday nights, watched Packer Games on Sundays, enjoyed playing cribbage and card games. He enjoyed joining Bingo Bugle Trips to Resorts and Casinos. He was devoted to his faith and family. Richard was a skilled craftsman and retired from the tool and die making trade in 1996. His family and friends will miss him, but the fond memories will be a source of comfort. Farewell.

we lost a dear friend. Marilyn Castle was a loving wife to her beloved Patrick, a wonderful mother to her five children (each one was her favorite) a proud grandmother and great grandmother to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Marilyn possessed a unique strength of character and was a force to be reckoned with. Her spunk and passion for Bingo will live on. She transitioned from playing Bingo on earth to going for the Big Bonanza in the sky, where everyone wins at least once a day and you’re just as happy if you win or not. An avid Bingo enthusiast, Marilyn played for excitement and to keep her mind sharp. You could say it was the love of the game and her enjoyment of people that kept her coming back. Her riches included friends and family who can still hear her contagious laugh and see her warm smile. Bingo distracted her from pain and physical struggles and that is a blessing. Marilyn will be missed by all who knew her. Farewell Marilyn, thanks for waiting for us in the great big Bingo hall in the sky.

Kicked out of Bingo
Dear Aunt Bingo, Recently, I got kicked out of a Bingo Hall for winning too often.
This Bingo Hall I played at is a paper-only hall, (no electronic machines). For a 15-second timer, I can play 10 six-on paper packets, while most others play between two and four paper packets.
Here is what caused me to be banned from the hall…
During the daytime session, I Bingoed six times, twice by myself and four split games. At the conclusion of the evening session, a few angry Bingo players went to the manager to complain about my winning. Comments made included: “I didn’t come here to see the same person win every game!” and “I can only keep up with three packets. That guy shouldn’t be allowed to play 10 packets!”
When I returned the following day, the manager called me into her office to inform me that I was no longer welcome at her hall. She told me: “I have some longtime loyal customers who told me that they will no longer come if I continue to allow you to play here. I can’t afford to lose eight customers.”
I went to the state gambling commission. They told me that as long as they have a sign posted that reads “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone,” they are justified in kicking me out.
Two questions for you to address in your column:
1. Should Bingo halls have the right to kick someone out for “winning too often” if other players threaten to no longer come?
2. For Bingo halls that have no electronic machines, should there be a limit on the number of paper packets one gets to play at once?
—Frustrated in Washington
Dear Frustrated,
In all my years of writing this column, this is the first time I’ve ever heard from a winning player who got the boot from a manager for winning too much.
To begin with, I am impressed that you can play 10 six-on Bingo sheets. (That’s 60 individual cards!) There is no way I could
keep up with that many cards, even with balls being called at 15-second intervals. Well, maybe for a while—but certainly not for an entire session.
As far as the manager’s position, it would make sense that she is worried about eight loyal players walking out on her. And the fact that she used the term “loyal” may mean they are more than just players; these are people she has likely known for years, and some may even be friends. I often harp in this column on managers who do not pay attention to players’ comments, so I do respect her decision to listen to her players and her desire to do what’s best for the majority.
With that said, however…
I cannot believe she would actually ban a winning player from the games. After all, you were not causing trouble, you were not loud or obnoxious…you were simply having a fantastic run of luck. Why punish someone who has paid for his paper and therefore has earned the right to play alongside the three-pack slowpokes?
I am curious to know just how often you have gotten multiple wins from this same hall. Was this series of wins a unique event, or do you walk away with multiple pots regularly? If that is the case, I might deduce that this is a simple little hall where most people play a few packs, and the idea of someone coming in and playing three or four times as many packs as anyone else and regularly walking out with most of the prize money would upset everyone.
If this is not the case, and you simply had a great day of Bingo, then I think this manager overreacted and knuckled under to a group of jealous players.
Now to your questions:
1. If the gaming regulations are behind her, then yes, she did have the right to do what she did, regardless of the reasoning behind her decision.
2. For your second question, I’m not quite sure what this has to do with your situation. You did not say that the manager said anything about limiting the number of packets someone can buy. Although it does bring up a good point: Why would this hall allow you to buy 10 packs and then ban you for winning, which happened in part because you had all those packs. That makes no sense at all, and I certainly would have challenged the manager on that issue during the course of your discussion. When you look at it that way, she’s being hypocritical.
You have opened up a whole host of interesting issues I’m sure readers have strong feelings about. I hope many readers—Bingo players, workers, and managers alike—will take a moment to write or e-mail me and share their thoughts.

Dirty Water Flows Downhill
This week I discovered that my current town, where I’ve lived for many years, has water contaminated by chemicals from the nearby now-defunct base.
The base, a mere few miles from my home, was declared a Superfund site in the 1980s due to the firefighting foams that contained two different perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), specifically perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), both deadly “forever chemicals.” Three years later responsibilities were established for who would deal with the mess, and the base was eventually closed.
The base was repeatedly cleaned and tested over the years, with acres paved over to contain the worst of the contaminated ground. Changes were made as time went on, but chemicals were still found in the water. In some areas, a landfill cap was put in place; in others, there was removal
of more soil; and in some areas there was cleanup and ongoing monitoring. Eventually those in authority considered the whole matter done and dusted.
Now we learn that the original PFAS chemicals at the base may be contaminating the aquifer — where we get our drinking water. Hidden away under their dirt cap, those chemicals appear to have migrated downhill. Tests done last year show that the level of chemicals was double what the state recommends, and one well was taken offline. New monitors were installed. Now, however, a recent test showed extremely high readings, higher than ever, with suspicion that closing that first well was driving the chemicals to the remaining wells where we get our drinking water.
The lesson here is this: If you live near a base that was deemed a Superfund site, and if remediation was done and the site declared to be clean, that does not mean problems won’t come back in the future.
Water does, after all, flow downhill.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover (R)
— Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Jack O’Connell (Skins) star in this steamy romantic drama, which recently premiered on Netflix. Based on the novel by D.H. Lawrence, Corrin plays Constance Reid, who marries Baronet Clifford Chatterley and becomes Lady Chatterley. Clifford gets injured fighting in World War I and returns paralyzed from the waist down, which causes a big rift in their marriage. Left feeling unwanted by her husband, Constance tries her best to hide her unhappiness, until she meets gamekeeper Oliver Mellors. An attraction builds between Constance and Oliver and blossoms into a love affair that ultimately can’t thrive in secrecy. (Netflix)
Bros (R) — Bobby Lieber (Billy Eichner) is a podcast host and museum curator who greatly enjoys the single life. But when he’s out with a friend at a nightclub, Bobby meets Aaron Shepard (Luke Macfarlane), who Bobby’s friend deems hot but boring. Amid their stark differences, the two begin to date and get to know each other. Their connection begins to get stronger, but Aaron still finds Bobby too intense, while Bobby doesn’t appreciate having to minimize
his behavior for others. The odd couple must learn to accept each other’s differences in order to make their relationship prosper. Out now on streaming, “Bros” is one of the first gay rom-coms produced by a major studio. (Peacock)

Twice a year the cutest group of pre-schoolers come for a Bingo session. This year they arrived in the late morning with their bag lunches and happy faces, where a number of us regulars waited to help out with the games.
There was confusion and some fussing over where everyone would sit. I discovered I had been given a special place of honor at the middle table. Kate was the caller and we were off to play regular or four corners.
Jeremy Little is the four-year-old son of friends of ours and while I try not to show favoritism, I kept an eye on his card to make sure he didn’t miss any numbers. Of course, I watched the other cards as well, but the children were surprisingly fast and accurate.
Jeremy had a special friend
today, named Stacy, who had few recognizable charms. She came across as loud and bossy and she checked Jeremy’s card before I had a chance to do so. Stacy won the first game and was impossible in victory, yelling her triumph so that the people next door could hear. She didn’t much like her prize, a small stuffed rabbit, but kept it anyway. “I’m going to get three and trade them in for a big stuffed bear,” she announced to the entire room. “Miss Murphy said I could.” Miss Murphy probably thought no one would win three games, but she hadn’t reckoned without Stacy.
The second game was diagonal only and Stacy explained loudly to Jeremy how to search for the right numbers. “It is the outside corners and the inside corners,” she said as if she had been playing for years. “Nothing else counts and no Ns.”
Kate grinned at me sympathetically and we proceeded. There was a rule of no drinks at the bingo tables so a line formed at the water fountain. Then a line formed at the rest rooms after the next game and so it went. I could tell Kate was definitely having more fun than I was.
We were playing “top or bottom line only,” when Jeremy suddenly got lucky. He had four numbers very quickly and was chanting, “G60” over and over. I was tempted to signal Kate to call the needed number when it came up by itself. Jeremy was so excited he could
not speak. He made victorious noises and ran around the table, waving his card. He, too, won a small stuffed rabbit. “That’s okay,” said Stacy, “we can trade them in on a cool bear.”
During intermission, the children ate lunch. Most had a sandwich and chips, but Jeremy had a special lunchbox treat that heated itself when the top was removed. Stacy coveted Jeremy’s lunch and set about wheedling him out of it. She offered a peanut butter sandwich in exchange and by pleading and bossing, got what she wanted. I removed the cover of the small main dish and we all watched it heat. Then Stacy tasted it and discovered she did not like the stew-like concoction. By this time, of course, Jeremy had eaten half the sandwich, but Stacy wanted it back anyway and was prepared to do battle. Jeremy gave back half the sandwich and took a bite of the stew. I found a cookie for each of them and thankfully went back to Bingo.
Stacy won again and received another small rabbit. Then she set about talking Jeremy out of his rabbit so she could trade all three of them in for a bear. She whispered in his ear so I could not hear what she promised, but he gave up his prize and she got her bear. I watched them all leave, Stacy carrying her bear triumphantly, thinking how neat it was to be four years old and have nothing to fret about except manipulating your friend for a bear.

Be My Valentine
I don’t know about you, but I still call this month’s holiday SAINT Valentine’s Day. But times change. I doubt if they ever change St. Patrick’s Day, but who knows. In this column I would like to reprint a letter I received in the earliest days of this column, nearly two decades ago. I often wonder what happened to the people mentioned. Here goes:
It was from Mary Kayduffer, of Iona, Iowa: “Dear Bob, I don’t want to get mushy in this letter to you but I have a story to tell that you might enjoy. I hope your readers will like it too. Many years ago, I became fascinated with Bingo. I was in college at the time and, through a regional newspaper, I found out that Bingo was played once a week in a town within driving distance.
“On a lark, I drove to that city one weekend and played Bingo. I found the people very nice and friendly. I went there, week after week, never telling any of my friends back at
college that I was playing Bingo, for fear they would laugh at me. One night at the games, I noticed a boy, my age, looking at me. He smiled. I smiled. We started sitting together. His name was Donnie. We didn’t talk much; I didn’t even ask about his hometown or background. You see, it was just nice to have a Bingo companion in my age group.
“Then, something magic happened. One day I saw him on campus. Wow. I went up to him and found out that we both drove out of town to play Bingo every week. We agreed to carpool the next time. So, here, years later, Donnie and I still carpool…but this time, it’s to take our four children to school. Yes, it all ended happily. And, it STARTED at Bingo. So, you see, Bob, there are more reasons to go to Bingo than just to play. Thanks for your columns, Bob. Mary (and Donnie) Kayduffer.”
Over the years, I wondered whatever happened to them. Sadly, in her e-mail she never mentioned the cities in which the story happened. I wish them luck. Their children would be in their 30s by now. Ah, time moves on, doesn’t it? I hope I don’t get too melancholy in my columns. As I am getting older, I find that Bingo is becoming a bigger and bigger part of my life and the people I meet every week are my family. I know, for many of you, it’s the same. Drop me a line at: bingo@earthlink. net. Next time, is it DAUBER or DABBER? I’m going to call a big Bingo sales store in Vegas and ask that question. Bob.
* “Set up a phone call between kids and grandparents a week or so before visiting. They can talk about what the kids might like to do. It gives the grandparents time to prepare, and it gives kids a chance to build excitement before the trip.” — G.R. in Ohio
* Clean and disinfect a wood cutting board with salt and lemon juice. Sprinkle the board with a healthy dose of plain salt (kosher or coarse salt works best), and scrub it with a cut half of a lemon. Rinse and clean with soap and water.
* Hairspray spritzed on the end of a thread will stiffen it long enough
to get it through a needle head. You also can thread your needle in front of a surface that’s an opposing color (i.e. a white piece of paper while threading a needle with black thread).
* When shopping for seamless bras, bring a T-shirt that is relatively tight-fitting to wear over the bras. You will know right away if there are seam lines or if the cup is too small. These sometimes get overlooked when a bra is worn under a looser shirt. — E.D. in Ontario, Canada
* Another use for baking soda: It’s a perfect exfoliator. It’s good for the whole body and is pH neutral, so it won’t overdry skin. To use it, just make a paste and rub onto skin. Rinse and enjoy the softness.
* Cold and flu got you down? Once you clear those symptoms, try gargling with saltwater. It reduces inflammation in your throat and washes away irritants and bacteria.

Oddest Bingo Snack of All Time?
Dear Guy,
File this one under “Weird Bingo Food.”
One of the Bingo halls I go to has a pretty relaxed food policy—they sell stuff you can buy there, but they don’t care if people want to bring their own food with them too. There is a woman there who does bring her own food every week. What’s weird is that she brings it in cans. And it’s always canned vegetables. And it’s always three cans.
She sets the cans out in front of her—like green beans, beets, and corn—then she opens each can with a can opener she also brings with her. She then takes the cans to the lady’s room, where I’m told she drains the water out into the sink. Then she comes back to the table, puts the cans of vegetables in a row in front of her, bends the lids up, puts a spoon in each one, and spends the evening eating her three cans of vegetables while she
plays Bingo.
I know it’s not really that big of a deal, but lots of us players get a chuckle out if it. It kind of reminds me of the old Charlie Chaplin movies where the hobo eats beans out of a can by the side of the road.
—Louie, via e-mail
Dear Louie,
Call me crazy, but I actually think it’s a pretty good idea nutritionally speaking, and I might even try it myself! However, I’d likely transfer mine out of the cans and into a Tupperware container at home, thus eliminating the need to bring a can opener and avoid performing kitchen prep in the bathroom. She’s definitely thinking outside the box here, or the can I should say! —Guy

Casino 101 Quiz
Quizzes are fun and a pretty easy way to determine how much you really know about a subject. So, give mine a try because you have nothing to lose and maybe some knowledge to gain.
QUESTIONS:
(1) When the blackjack dealer hits soft 17 it helps the player. True or false?
(2) Always take even money in blackjack because it’s one of the few sure bets in the casino. True or false?
(3) What is the “unmentionable” number in craps?
(4) Caribbean Stud Poker has a unique dealer-qualifying rule. What is it?
(5) You have the edge on every bet you make with a gambling coupon. True or false?
(6) It’s possible to get an overall return that exceeds 100% when you play video poker.
(7) You should never split 8s when the dealer shows a strong 9, 10 or ace upcard. True or false?
(8) About 60% of your hands are losers when you play Let it Ride. True or False?
(9) There is one thing you must absolutely do before you can start to earn slot points for comps and cashback. What is it?
(10) You can cash out your roulette chips at the casino cashier. True of false?
ANSWERS:
(1) FALSE. Blackjack games that specify dealers must hit all 17s, including a soft 17, give the house an extra 0.2% edge over the player
(compared to standing on soft 17). This rule favors the house, not the player.
(2) FALSE. Even though getting the guaranteed 1 to 1 (even money) payoff seems like a good idea, in the long run you’ll average more (roughly a 1.04 to 1 payout) if you decline taking even money.
(3) SEVEN. Don’t even think about saying it. The reason? Most craps players believe that this unmentionable number causes right bettors to lose on point rolls. Players generally refer to “it” as “Big Red.”
(4) DEALER MUST HAVE ACEKING or HIGHER. This rule also frustrates most players because if the dealer doesn’t qualify, a player does not win a bonus payoff regardless of how good a hand he has.
(5) TRUE. No matter if it’s Matchplay, bonus blackjack, or a free ace coupon, you will have the best of it whenever you use the coupon.
(6) FALSE. It’s possible to get returns over 100% by playing video poker skillfully, meaning playing full pay machines and taking advantage of cash back, bounce back, and comps.
(7) FALSE. A 16 is the worst blackjack hand you’ll face. But by splitting you can convert this one bad hand into two better hands which have better odds of winning. Even so, you will still lose money on both 8’s in the long run but you’ll lose less money compared to playing one hand of 16 against a dealer’s 9, 10 or ace.
(8) FALSE. You’ll actually stand to lose 76% of your hands. You’ll make up for most, but not all, of your losses on the 24% of the hands that you win because about 8% pay more than even money. However, overall the house keeps more than players win and maintains a healthy 3.5% advantage.
(9) JOIN THE SLOT CLUB. You can’t earn points for your slot (or video poker) play unless you join the casino’s slot club and insert the card into the machine’s card reader when you play.
(10) FALSE. Roulette chips cannot be converted to cash at the cashier, so don’t leave the table with them. You can convert them to casino chips at the roulette table where you are playing.

Peppermill Hits 50!
The beloved Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge on the Strip just north of Convention Center Drive recently celebrated its gold anniversary, having opened on Dec. 26, 1972. It’s a pilgrimage site for visiting old-timers who remember when it was one of the in places on the Boulevard, with its 12-page menu, five of which are for breakfast (10 omelets alone), and the portions are almost as big. Several items remain from the offerings on opening day, such as the fabulous fresh fruit salad (that comes with ice cream, housebaked banana-nut bread, and marshmallow sauce), the sinful French toast ambrosia, and of course the half-pound Peppermill burger. The Peppermill earned the top spot in the Las Vegas Advisor’s recent poll on the restaurants not to be missed by first-timer Vegas visitors.

Proper Eats is the fourth food hall on the Strip, along with Block 16 at Cosmo, Eataly at Park MGM, and Famous Food Street Eats at Resorts World.
Formula 1 Funds Charities
A story in the Las Vegas ReviewJournal reported that Formula 1 Las Vegas raised $743,000 for local charitable causes from the
96,000 people who signed up for the ticket priority list. The cost of securing a spot on the first-chance list was a $7.77 donation that F1 donated to two food banks and a school-garden and communitymarket program. “We’re here to stay,” the CEO of Las Vegas Grand Prix said, “and we want to become a part of the fiber of the community.”
Station Plans for Inspirada

The plans indicate that the property will be completed in three phases, with a construction start date of January 2024.

Bunkers, Cougars, and Junkets
Don’t worry about getting older. You’re still going to do dumb stuff, only slower.
—Anonymous
Happy birthday to my honey, Robert. He’s getting old, but he’s not as old as I am. He tells everyone I’m a cougar because he was born in February and is three months younger than I. Since February is the month for lovers, here’s a shout-out to my sweetheart. May everyone have someone in their life as loving as he is to me; my best friend and travel companion. And speaking of travel, we’ve recently gone on two adventures so here’s a few details.
First, we flew to Reno on a gambling junket, then were driven by bus to Lake Tahoe. A junket is a gambling trip via air or bus to a casino for the purpose of winning big bucks. Unfortunately, we haven’t done that, but I’ve seen others win thousands. On the other hand, for free or a minimum amount, we get three or four nights in a very nice casino/hotel plus transportation and sometimes comps for food and other giveaways. Lately, we have been traveling with Preferred Casino Tours, Pennsylvania, and have been impressed with their well organized and efficiently run junkets to gambling meccas such as Biloxi and Atlantic City.
We stayed at Harvey’s in Tahoe which is connected to Harrah’s by an underground tunnel. This is convenient for my playing video poker at both places while staying
warm and toasty. Simultaneously, the windows afford a view of the skiers who are outside in the frigid weather attempting to turn their noses as blue as their frozen butts by falling into deep snow.
Surprise, our other trip was by bus and not expressly to scratch our gambling itches. We traveled with friends and other seniors to Greenbriar Resort in West Virginia.
It was beautifully decorated for Christmas and everyone was in a festive mood. We toured their massive underground bunker, meant to serve as an emergency shelter for the U.S. Congress in the event of a nuclear holocaust during the Cold War. Code named Project Greek Island, it was stocked with supplies for thirty years. In 1992 a reporter discovered its existence and wrote about it in his newspaper; after which, the government decommissioned it and it is now open to the public for tours.
The Greenbriar is a five-star resort and according to its owners, offers tasteful gambling with a small casino on property. Men must wear jackets after seven to enter the casino and women must dress accordingly, no tattered jeans or unkempt clothing. We gambled a little, but the casino is small and the video poker machines are older than me so we didn’t stay very long. Interestingly, the locals in the area are not allowed to gamble at Greenbriar. West Virginia law requires for the most part, you must be a guest at the hotel to enter the casino and IDs are checked at the door. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big! Lastly, a happy birthday shout-out to my friend, Sandy. She shares a birthday with my husband and last year I carelessly omitted her name from a Facebook post about February birthdays. Since a mention in my column is better than a Facebook post, I hope she finally forgives me. My contact email is nlpvzw6172@gmail.com.
