Skin in the Game

Dear Aunt Bingo,

With the weather at its warmest this time of year I can understand why Bingo players want to dress comfortably in light blouses and shorts and sandals when they come to Bingo. But considering that two of the halls I play at are church Bingos, I have to say I have been very shocked on a number of occasions by the revealing clothing some female players have been wearing.

Several not-so-young women have shown up at Bingo with shorts and skirts that are so short they might as well have come in their underwear. But that is nothing compared to the ones who arrive bra-less with tops that leave very little to the imagination.

Bingo may not be the same as a religious service, but it is still held at a church! It seems to me that a degree of restraint is warranted in the clothing players wear.

—CC, via e-mail

Dear CC,

To be honest, what you describe here isn’t seen just in Bingo halls. Head to the grocery store, fastfood restaurant or just walk on the street and you will see more skin exposed in more revealing outfits than ever before.

I’m torn on this topic. I understand your desire for proper decorum, but we are talking about the human body. It’s natural and made in God’s image and likeness according to the beliefs of many. When did we decide it was shameful and needed to be strapped in and covered up? (Oh, right…when God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden!)

In the end, I think this is a matter of to each her own. If these ladies come to Bingo dressed this way and are comfortable with it, who are we to judge? Light clothing is keeping them cool and relaxed— and sharp for Bingo. Perhaps it is their secret weapon. —Aunt Bingo

Fraud and Theft

Not all the thefts and fraud the Office of Inspector General uncovers runs into the millions. But a stolen dollar is a stolen dollar, and the Department of Veterans Affairs OIG will go after it, no matter the size.

Take the perp who stole used precious metals that were supposed to be recycled. This dental tech at a VA facility nabbed the metals and sold them to a third party. He could get 10 years in prison and a possible fine of $250,000 ... all for the $17,000 he made passing along stolen metals.

Then there were the 44 doctors, who should have known better, who have to pay back $5.7 million that they netted from a fraudulent self-referral program. The eye and ear clinic broke the law that bars them from referring patients to facilities where they have a vested interest and financial relationship. It’s called the Stark Act, and it keeps physicians from sending their patients to places where they

know they’ll get a monetary return, instead of caring more about the patients’ actual health.

Then there was the couple who, for seven years, submitted over 100 fictitious applications claiming that their company was providing services to veterans in need of aid and attendance. Aid and attendance is giving assistance to homebound veterans who need help with everyday basic functions, like eating, bathing and taking medications.

This couple hunted up veterans and surviving spouses and got the needed information, like DD-214s, bank docs and others. Over 70 veterans were approved for funds, and the couple took over $2 million while the veterans themselves got only a portion of that. The couple could get a max of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine ... each. As of this writing, their company web information still pushes the aid and attendance angle and describes how they will submit all the documents to the VA.

PICKS OF THE MONTH

Black Mirror: Season 6 (TVMA) — Ah, Black Mirror, how deeply you were missed. Four years after the last season of the sci-fi anthology series premiered, fans are finally getting a new season, this time taking viewers to five different mind-bending realities in five separate episodes. One episode, titled “Joan Is Awful,” follows an average woman named Joan who discovers that a major streaming platform has made a TV adaptation of her life... starring Salma Hayek. Another episode — “Demon 79” — centers on a sales assistant who is forced to commit heinous acts to stop disaster from striking. All episodes are available to stream now. (Netflix)

And Just Like That... : Season 2 (TV-MA) — For the next few Thursdays stretching into August, season two of the Sex and the City sequel series, “And Just Like That... ,” will be occupying our television screens. Of course, more drama is headed the ladies’ way, with Charlotte (Kristin Davis) having to deal with qualms about her daughter, Lily, growing up too quickly. A year after Big’s death, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is learning to love again, perhaps with a certain old flame (Aidan Shaw), while Miranda (Cynthia

Nixon) is still going strong with her partner, Che. But the most shocking dramatic moment of all is the return of Kim Cattrall as fan-favorite Samantha! After being adamant about not wanting to return for any more sequels, Cattrall will be featured in just one scene during the season two finale. (And just like that ... she’s back!)

The first two episodes premiere June 22. (Max)

Wildflower (R) — Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventure of Sabrina) leads this new coming-of-age film premiering June 23. Shipka stars as Bea, a senior in high school who’s had a very non-traditional way of growing up. Since she had two disabled parents, Bea often switched between the “daughter” role and the “caretaker” role, and she grapples with the fact that she must make plans for her future with her parents’ well-being in the back of her mind. It’s ultimately up to her to find the right balance in her life with her family before she walks across that graduation stage. Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus) and Jacki Weaver (Yellowstone) also co-star in the film. (Hulu)

Betty’s Big Night

My friend Betty’s husband died following six years of a terrible, debilitating disease during which Betty nursed him night and day. I would have thought she would be in some way relieved at the end of this burden but, no, she missed him constantly all the same. Her only relief was playing Bingo—which she loves with a passion.

Bingo.

Right away it seemed to be a lucky day for Betty, as she won on the second game. “I think I’ll get a few more Bonanzas,” she said. “I’m feeling like this is my day to win big.”

I bought us each three more Bonanzas and refused to let her reimburse me. “It’s my contribution to your lucky day,” I explained.

We were content, playing our cards and chatting amiably when three things happened all at once. First, the caller got taken with a terrible coughing fit and had to leave the podium, then another player close by had what I guessed was an epileptic seizure and had to be carted away, and

we shared, and it was sinfully delicious.

The regular caller returned, looking a bit frazzled, but soon we were onto the Bonanza game. “I have a really good feeling about this one,” said Betty. We each daubed frantically as the three extras kept us busy, when an “I’m on,” came from Betty and we both breathed a little faster. Three more numbers went by when she erupted with “Bingo!”

There was a mistake on the card, however, but the winning number was in the monitor. “Now if nobody Bingoes, I’ve got it,” smiled Betty. And again, she was lucky— nobody else claimed a win and she won the Bonanza jackpot.

Her only relief was playing Bingo

I determined to take her to a game as soon as the memorial service was over, and she happily agreed. Betty is a big woman in body and in spirit, and she doesn’t go unnoticed in the Bingo hall. Several people came over to speak to her, offering their condolences and support, but I began to wish they would just leave her alone to enjoy playing

third, a neighbor dropped all of her daubers and was frantically trying to pick them up.

“It’s a very busy and interesting night,” said Betty. “I’m sure glad we came.” She smiled contentedly.

At intermission I treated us to coffee and a pecan roll—which

“What a night. What a night!” she exclaimed happily as we prepared for the final blackout. “We only need one more win to declare a total victory.”

“I sure would like to win one,” I said. “I haven’t even been on all night.”

“Well, we’ll just make this one come out right,” said Betty. “I’ll put all my energy into your winning.”

Soon I was on and very excited. I started chanting the number I wished for, but to no avail. Someone else won and I was a little disappointed, but not much. After all, the whole evening had been to get Betty out and that we had accomplished with style!

The People Who Make Bingo Possible

Hi, again, everyone. I got an email at bingo@earthlink.net from Nicky in Palm Springs, California.

Nicky says: “Hi, Bob, I have read your column every month since my Mom started bringing home The Bingo Bugle, when I was in grade school. Until a fire destroyed our house a year ago, she had every one of your columns. I wish you and my Mom could have met.

“She was the world’s best Bingo player. She traveled over 250 miles a week in Southern California, playing at her favorite Bingo halls.

I remember a conversation I had with her about the people who work at the halls. She had just read one of your columns in which you thanked all the people who worked at halls ... both charity and casinotype. In that column you also blasted halls for not telling callers who MUMBLE: ‘YOU MUMBLE!’

“You mentioned that you had been a radio newscaster all your life and that when you were behind the microphone you used a difference emphasis and a different

reading-style on the air. You also noted that Bingo callers should remember that they were ON THE AIR. And, you said that if you have to look at the board to see what the last number called was, something was wrong.

“Bob, now to my point, my Mom also talked a lot about the fact that she felt you should have some kind of national award to reward a caller who does NOT mumble. I totally agree, so, Bob, here is my idea… and I know you have talked about this before. You need to have a CALLER OF THE YEAR contest. Think about it. Keep up the good work. —Nicky, Palm Springs.”

So, here goes. I am doing this only as a function of BOB ON BINGO. This contest is not a part of the Bingo Bugle. It is MY contest. And, somehow, I will come up with a prize. I am responsible for this. So, I want you all to think of the one single person who makes

Bingo happen in your area.

If you play at a casino-type operation, look for someone who is working his or her butt off, in spite of the fact the pay is low, the hours are tough and that person is there ALL day, in many halls, even when we are not.

If you play at a charity hall, remember that NO ONE is paid ANYTHING. The workers are volunteers. They are there for you. They put up with your demands for no compensation, other than the realization that they are helping the parochial school, or civic group or other cause for which they are volunteering.

NOMINATE at: bingo@ earthlink.net. Or, Box 90, Monroe City, Indiana, 47557. I will now go check the mail.

What Not to Wear?

Dear Guy, Don’t you think it’s weird to wear bedroom slippers to Bingo?

There’s this couple where I play that either show up wearing slippers or, when the weather is bad, will come in boots and then change into slippers at the hall. I’m waiting for the day they show up in their pajamas!

F.F.T., Alberta, Canada

Dear F.F.T., People wear shoes, boots, sandals, and flip flops out and about. Why not slippers? Actually, I kind of like the idea. Those hard hall floors can be chilly and tough

on the feet. A nice, cozy pair of slippers might be just the thing. Thanks for the idea! —Guy

Dear Guy,

There’s a man at my Bingo who reads a book while he plays. I’m not kidding! He plays five or six sheets and tracks and dabs like the rest of us, then he looks down and reads from a book he has in front of him. I don’t know how he does it. How can you read more than a sentence or two between calls and be able to track whatever the story is you are reading? Have you ever heard of such a thing? —L.L., California

Dear L.L., Wow, that’s a new one to me. I could see someone doing this if they only played one or two packs, but five or six? That’s a challenge! I will say, though, that I have a good friend who loves to read and reads very fast. I’ve seen him polish off a 400-page novel in less than a day! Maybe that’s what this player does. If he can speed-read an entire page in a matter of seconds, then he could certainly play Bingo and keep track of the storyline at the same time. And I say, “Good for him!” —Guy

Hey guys! (And gals!) Write to Guy’s Turn c/o The Bingo Bugle, P.O. Box 527, Vashon, WA 98070, or e-mail Guy directly at tara@bingobugle.com.

Book Review: Arnold Snyder Strikes Again

There are plenty of good books that cover basic strategy and card counting for blackjack players; Arnold Snyder in fact, wrote some of them. His latest book, however, is, well, “radical.” I don’t mean this in a negative sense; on the contrary, this book is loaded with “eye-popping information and stories” about advanced playing techniques used by Snyder, and some of the world’s most successful blackjack players, to beat the casinos at their own game. As Blackjack Hall of Famer Don Schlesinger succinctly put it, “Arnold Snyder has decided not to hold back and publish information that has heretofore never been made public.”

I was a young and relatively new card counter in 1981, trying to learn everything I could about the game of blackjack. Somewhere I read about a new quarterly publication called Blackjack Forum, so I mailed in a check for a subscription and eagerly awaited the delivery of my first copy. I remember my surprise when I discovered that Arnold Snyder, who was the writer and publisher of Blackjack Forum, was working the night shift at the post office sorting mail. To put it bluntly, I found it “radical” to be reading information about “how to win at blackjack” from a post office employee. However, as you’ll discover from reading his tell-all book, Snyder quit his job at the post office, scraped together a meager bankroll, and tried to make it as a professional blackjack player.

To say he succeeded is an understatement. His high-stakes assault on casinos, using advanced techniques that transcend card counting, is legendary. His books, the printed quarterly Blackjack Forum, and blackjackforumonline. com website have helped countless numbers of individuals become successful card counters (including yours truly); and his selection in 2002 as one of only seven charter members inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame was a well-deserved honor.

What sets this book apart from other blackjack books are Snyder’s real-life stories of how he was able

to play for high stakes using several different advanced techniques while being closely watched by casino personnel. He not only reveals the techniques he used but also explains how they work in great detail: shuffle tracking, hole carding, edge sorting, front loading, and card-steering. In my opinion, the best-of-the-best sections of the book are his partner-play with his wife, Radar, the comprehensive treatment on loss-rebates, and his playing experiences using shuffle tracking (solo, and with Radar).

Snyder meticulously explains the camouflage techniques he and Radar used that befuddled pit bosses and casino surveillance while they were playing for high stakes and extracting millions of dollars from casinos and being given the high-roller treatment from casino bosses and hosts with outrageous favors. (It not only included comped casino suites, free transportation, gourmet meals, and invitations to the Super Bowl, to name just a few, but also unbelievable playing-condition benefits that he asked for and received, such as a hand-shuffled game rather than one using a continuous shuffling machine.)

The latter chapters contain Snyder’s comments, views, and enthralling stories of some of the world’s most successful gamblers including James Grosjean, Richard Munchkin, Lawrence Revere, Al Francesco, Ken Uston, Stanford Wong, Bill Benter, Darryl Purpose, Wally Simmons, Anthony Curtis, and others. Even if you don’t recognize some of the names, the stories that Snyder tells about them are fascinating. He also included a story about how I indirectly saved Tommy Hyland’s blackjack team members from prison. (You’ll have to read the book to find out how this happened.)

You can rest assured that the statistics and percentages quoted by Snyder in the book are accurate because two of the leading blackjack math experts, Blackjack Hall of Fame members Don Schlesinger and James Grosjean, reviewed the manuscript before its publication.

Lastly, and most importantly, this book will give you a “feel” for what it takes to be a professional gambler earning money in casinos. You’ll read what it’s like betting six simultaneous hands of $10,000 using powerful advantage-play techniques while being watched by casino bosses and surveillance, and I guarantee you’ll enjoy reading the positively written, inside stories and secrets from some of the world’s most successful gamblers.

This book is, after all, a professional gambling memoir, but unlike any other book that I have read on blackjack. I highly recommend it to all blackjack aficionados, but especially to card counters who want to elevate their game to a higher level.

Chicken Guy! Opens at Caesars

Hotel-Within-Hotel TravelMarketReport.com, in a story about the Sahara, made recent mention of turning one of the hotel towers into a boutique hotel-in-a-hotel. The AAA Four Diamond Alexandria Tower, which was completely remodeled ten or so years ago during the SLS era according to designs by renowned French architect Philippe Starck, will be reimagined again, then remodeled and upgraded to become “a standalone hotelwithin-a-hotel, though still under the Sahara umbrella.”

iHeartRadio Music Festival

The iHeartRadio Music Festival, taking place at T-Mobile Arena Saturday-Sunday September 22-23, will feature the following headliners: Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Wayne, Public Enemy, Kane Brown, and more.

Binion’s Million Returns

The million-dollar display has returned to Binion’s in Las Vegas. Customers can pose in front of the

display and press a button to take a souvenir photo for no charge. Unlike the display at Horseshoe Las Vegas, the bills at Binion’s, though not 10,000 bills like the original, are real, and there’s a cool video to prove it.

Country’s Largest Watch Store

The Swiss luxury-watch brand owned by Europe’s biggest watch retailer, Bucherer AG, recently reopened its store at the Forum Shops at Caesars after an 18-month closure for renovations and expansion. The new store, dubbed Bucherer 1888 TimeDome, will occupy two stories and a total of 18,500-square-feet; the 1,000-square-feet more than the previous space will make it larger than the company’s flagship TimeMachine venue on 5th Avenue in New York City. The facade alone is worthy of description: 21 glass panels that are 22 feet tall, each “transitioning from clear to opaque gold.” The new venue is reportedly the largest watch store in the U.S.

New Pot Regs Signed into Law

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has signed an omnibus cannabisreform bill that loosens the existing laws to a certain extent. First, it more than doubles the amount of marijuana that individuals can legally buy and possess from one ounce to two and a half ounces, while possession and purchase of cannabis concentrates doubled, from an eighth-ounce to a quarter. The bill also consolidates the dispensary license; a rec license now includes medical sales. Nevadans with a medicalmarijuana card remain exempt from the state excise tax at rec retailers. Finally, application and renewal fees for licensees will be reduced. So far, Lombardo is living up to his cannabis-friendly campaigning.

No Binkies for Me!

I tried on a bikini and looked in the mirror. Made the wise decision to wear it as a bracelet instead. — Anonymous

July 1, 1862, gave us a momentous occasion to celebrate with a margarita; or many margaritas. NOT! Specifically, the Bureau of Internal Revenue Service was established. Oh, for the joy of it all, and 81 years later on July 1, 1943, taxes began to be withheld from our paychecks. Fast forward to this month when taxes have increased so much that we are lucky to pay our bills, drink a house margarita on cheap night, and still afford to play bingo on a regular basis. Bah humbug to this day in history.

On the other hand, July 5th is National Bikini Day. In the 1940s a Frenchman designed a two-piece bathing suit, a bikini, referencing Bikini Island where the US tested atomic bombs. It makes me laugh when I hear the word bikini because when these suits first became popular, my dad called them binkies. He knew the correct pronunciation, but both he and I thought calling them binkies was hilarious.

The first bikinis used about 30 square inches of fabric while those made today are barely there, if you grasp my meaning. An early ad campaign claimed a bikini wasn’t a real bikini unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring; no problem with today’s version. In 1960 the first bikinis inspired the song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie

Yellow Polka Dot Bikini by Brian Hyland and it sold a million copies in the US. Later, a follow-up song to the hit was released by teenager, Jeri Lynne Fraser. It answered the question in the original song of what happened next and was titled Poor Begonia Caught Pneumonia Not surprising, and it’s also no surprise that there are few to none bikini clad swimmers in Alaska or other frigid zones. So, ladies, I’ll pass, but the rest of you put on your binkies as my dad would say and get outside in the sunshine. Guys, all you need do is tastefully and politely appreciate and enjoy the beautiful women of all shapes and sizes who are wearing them. Oops, I forgot to mention that July 2 is I Forgot Day. This holiday is right up my alley because if I don’t write important stuff down, I’ll forget it. My forgetfulness isn’t age related because I’ve been this way since I was a tiny teen. As a teacher, I would put an X with soap on my home’s bathroom mirror. This reminded me if I had a staff meeting, or whatever that day. I still do this for reminders, and it works great. I Forgot Day is also a good time to forget past sins and hurtful episodes done to you by others; and by you to others. Start anew by offering apologies to those you hurt in some way; forgive those who did you wrong. Apologize, forgive, forget. You’ll feel better if you do.

Lastly, July 11 is Cheer Up the Lonely Day, created by Francis Pesek. He promoted kindness toward others who are lonely, forgotten, or shut-in. We should strive to follow his example and make a difference in someone’s life by spending time, hugging, listening, and talking with those who might need a friend. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. For suggestions, comments, and cyber hugs, email nlpvzw6172@ gmail.com.
