Knights of Columbus South Milwaukee Bingo Makes Donation to Eight Charity Partners

Eight charitable organi zations received monetary contributions generated by the Knights of Columbus Bingo Operation. Perhaps not widely known, the prof it made by your local Bingo Halls can only be used for specific purposes. Items that can be puchased in clude things necessary to conduct Bingo games like Bingo Cards, tables, chairs, the equipment used for Bingo calling and the like. Above and beyond that, the money must be used ìn furtherace of the purpose and objective of the organization that runs the Bingo. The Knights of Columbus is involved in many types of charity. Therfore they are allowed by State regulation to use Bingo money to support other like minded charita ble organizations.
The Knights was found ed in 1882 as a Catholic Fraternal group. It stands to reason that they would emphasise assistance to Catholic parishes that need help in these difficult times accomplishing their mission. These parishes do the hard work of edu cating children, providing comfort to the people, giv ing food to the poor and much, much more. These parishes include St. Mat thew, Sacred Heart, Nativ ity of the Lord and Divine Mercy.
Two other Catholic re ligious groups that partner with the KC’s charity work are The Xavarian Mission Fathers and The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi.

The Mission Fathers do truly heroic work locally and throughout the world in the name of God and

Jesus Christ. The Sis ters of St. Francis of Assisi have been instrumental in education in the local area as well as many locations throughout the country. St. Mary’s Academy girls High School on South Lake Drive in Milwaukee was run by these Sisters. They also educated children suffer ing from intellectual chal lenges. Now, many of their members are advancing in age and require special ized care. They surely de serve help after dedicating their entire lives to helping others and living an aus tere life according to their vows of poverty, chastity and obediance.
The KC’s respects hu man life and so supports other pro-life organizations such a Lifes Connection and Carenet Milwaukee.
The Knights of Columbus recognizes 4 watchwords

in their mission and vision. They are: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Their patriotic involvement is helping veterans organi zations. The South Mil waukee American Legion Post #27 was also on the list of donation recipients.
Rember, any time you play at a charity Bingo Hall you participate in helping the less fortunate while keeping your own mind ac tive and provide a social outlet for your fellow Bingo Players and friends.
Check Pages 6 and 7 of this Bingo Bugle for the Players Guide where you can find a Bingo Game any day of the week. The Knights of Columbus ad is on Page 7, they would love to welcome you to their Bingo. They just put their money where their mouth is to the tune of $78,750.00 That’s great in our book.

Walking Around the Bingo Hall
Dear Aunt Bingo,
I was one of those people who never exercised. My life was house to car, car to work, work to home, dinner table to armchair, armchair to bed, then the next day it started all over again. I felt fat and blobby. I had no energy. I hated it and decided to make a change.
There was no way I could ever become one of those exercise fiends, and frankly, I didn’t have time to schedule regular visits to the gym. But what I could do is get up on my feet and walk—and it has changed my life.
Now at work I never pick up the phone to call a coworker if I don’t have to; I get up out of my chair and walk to wherever they are—whether it’s four offices or four floors away. At lunchtime, 15 minutes of my hour are for eating and the other 45 are for walking. At home after dinner, I walk with the kids through the neighborhood almost every night.
I also have incorporated walking into my Bingo. When we take a break halfway through the evening, instead of heading to the snack table, I head outside and walk around the building or up the street. I track the time carefully, so I never return to the Bingo hall late, and I feel re-energized when I return.
I’ve gotten a few other players to walk with me at a couple of the halls where I play. Other times, I’m perfectly happy to just walk alone. I’ve been doing this for five months now, and I’ve lost 14 lbs. with only minor changes to my diet and without another new exercise activity.
I thought I would share my story in hopes it would get other people to get up out of their chairs and start moving, too. It’s such an easy thing, and it will make them feel so much better.
Lady Legs, Massachusetts, via e-mail
Dear Lady Legs, Excellent! As someone who has found herself spending more and more time plopped in the nearest chair, I appreciate your inspirational story. So many infomercials on TV show torturous exercise programs that I can’t imagine myself doing, so I pretty much ignore them, and dismiss thoughts of getting involved in any type of exercise. But heck, even I can walk! And there’s still plenty of nice outdoor weather to enjoy. I, for one, am going to give it a try! —Aunt Bingo

Doing It on Your Own
The headline of this column could actually be “What to do when your local veterans group doesn’t step up to help other veterans.” Because, yeah, it happens. Mostly it’s for compelling reasons the members might be older. For the Veterans of Foreign Wars, it was early 70s. I believe it. Or post membership might have dwindled to the point where there are many on the roster but only a few who actually show up for meetings. But if you’re faced with this situation and you want to focus on helping other veterans, there are a few things you can do on your own or with some likeminded buddies.
If your veterans group is willing to part with money to help other veterans, take the cash. Make suggestions and get their votes on how it should be spent.

Start with Voluntary Services at the local Veterans Affairs medical center. They can always use
donations of money and time. In one calendar year, volunteers toted up 2.6 million hours. Parking lot shuttle driver, office assistant, dining room companion, mail delivery to wards, transportation van driver ... the possibilities are many.
Even outside the VA world, you have options to help needy veterans and their families. You can do grocery shopping for elderly or infirm veterans, mow lawns, corral skilled carpenters and tradesmen to do home repairs, do taxes if you’re a CPA and even match companies with unemployed veterans.
Make inquiries at homeless shelters that serve a lot of veterans and ask what help you can provide. It might be as simple as washing dishes. It might be delivering cases of food from their supplier. You might be playing checkers after lunch or handing out dry socks.

Whatever you do, however small, to help another veteran, can make a difference. You don’t need to be part of a group to do it.

PICKS OF THE MONTH
The Sea Beast (PG) — There once was a time when sea beasts would reach the shores of civilization, putting many people in grave danger. It was only until sea beast hunter Jacob Holland, and many other warriors, swore to protect people from the frightening monsters and push them far away from the shores. When a little girl named Maisie comes face-toface with the legendary sea beast hunter, she secretly stows away on Jacob’s ship, determined to help him fight monsters. Upon finding her on board, Jacob cannot seem to get rid of this headstrong little girl, or even fully protect her as he wishes to, as she throws him into the craziest adventure of his life yet. (Netflix)
The Bob’s Burgers Movie (PG-13) — After being delayed for almost two years, the film adaptation of the beloved “Bob’s Burgers” series has now reached streaming platforms for fans to enjoy at home. Taking place as summer begins, a sinkhole opens up right in front of the Belcher family’s burger restaurant,
threatening the destruction of their establishment. However, Louise does some poking around and uncovers a skeleton within the sinkhole. The landlord responsible for fixing the sinkhole, Calvin Fischoeder, is assumed to be the killer and gets arrested — falsely, according to the Belchers, leading the chaotic family of five into a mayhem-filled goose chase to figure out the true killer and fix the sinkhole before it’s too late. (HBO Max/Hulu)
Don’t Make Me Go (R) — Single father Max is on a learning curve with his teenage daughter, Wally, who has reached the age all parents dread — the age when it’s nearly impossible to tear a teenager away from their phone or their friends. But Max receives terrible news that he has a terminal illness, with the only form of treatment being a very risky surgery. Unsure of how to tell Wally, Max decides to take her on a road trip for the rest of her summer break, with the intent of teaching her as much as he can and spending as much time with her as possible. This movie’s an instant tear-jerker, so have your tissues handy. (Amazon Prime)
Good Clean Fun
At one of our Indian casinos you can play day or night, and there are plenty of Bingo machines. Rodney and I went for a day’s excursion recently to visit the casino and play Bingo. The casino was plush and very clean. They were constantly cleaning the carpets, no used glasses stood around, trash was collected, no chairs were ever out of place for long.
As soon as we arrived, Rodney insisted on eating. He loves the food in the casino and is not happy until his tummy is full. It was a delicious meal, but far too filling. I felt like taking a nap and might have if not for our splendid surroundings, and Bingo.
We entered the Bingo room which was filling up fast. I chose a seat next to a man in a wheelchair who looked friendly.
“Hi, there,” he said. “Sit down. Did you buy in yet?”
“My friend is doing that,” I responded. “Do you like playing here? Come here often?”
“Three or four times a week,” he said. “I don’t win very often but it really fills the day and that is what counts since I don’t have legs I can run around on.” He whacked his thigh adding, “Lost the use of these in Nam,” he said, “But I’m not embarrassed about it. In fact, I think you would call me an activist. I’m always demonstrating for accessibility. My name is Dane.”
“Good for you,” I said and introduced myself and then Rodney who came up with our buy-in packets.
“You should take on our building,” he said. “It’s got nothing but stairs, even when there is no excuse for stairs.”
“That’s the way it is many places—especially theaters. Old ones are the worst.” He had his cards out ready to play. “Here we go with the warm-ups.”
I was on twice, right out of the gate, but didn’t win. The games went by very fast. Rodney won on a hard way. No O’s were called for about twenty numbers and we knew the first O called would take it. Rodney and about thirty others won so all the winners had to split, $10 each.
“Not enough to write home about,” commented Rodney.
“Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick,” observed Dane.
“Not much,” said Rodney, and the two of them laughed uproariously. The worker came around selling
speed Bingo, which I really enjoy. Rodney talked me into playing four when my limit is usually two. I don’t like to push myself so hard
“Oh, all right,” I said, sounding and feeling petulant.
The game went so fast I could not keep up with four cards. Someone Bingoed. “Oh,” I said. “I had it on the next to last number and I missed it. Damn.”
Just like that, the games were over. We wandered out into the main hall of the casino where I sat down to play a slot and scored a small win, and my Bingo blues were officially over.

I love to check my e-mail, at bobonbingo@ earthlink.net. Since this column is printed in Bingo Bugle publications all over the country, I only really feel in contact when someone writes to me. So, take this copy of the paper home with you and use my e-mail address and let me hear from you.

First, a short note from “Stewey” in Carrier Mills, Illinois: “Bob, I hope this note gets through to you at the home office. I have a suggestion.
You are always talking about how important good callers are. So, I think you need to have a contest and find everyone’s favorite caller.
“There is a special lady here whom I would vote for. She is funny and always smiles and is organized AND I can understand every word she says. Think about having a contest. Stewey.”
Well, Stewey, that is a great idea. I’ll talk to the “powers that be” and find out how we can do that. Maybe more, next month.
Stewey’s remark about the caller whom you can easily understand brings me to this note from AC in Canandaigua, New York: “Bob, the other night at Bingo I was reminded of a column you wrote a very long time ago about Bingo callers who mumble. Now, I know being a caller is NOT easy. I know it takes concentration and organization.
“You said something in that column that I still remember. You mentioned that you had done over 50,000 hourly newscasts on radio during your career. You then mentioned that when you were on the air you talked differently than when you were off the air. Then, you wondered why many Bingo callers don’t learn from this. Anyway, stay well and thanks for being here each month. AC.”
Finally, a really sweet note from Sam B., in Columbia, Maryland: “Bob, the other night I noticed that an elderly woman who has been at our Thursday Bingo for years was not there. I called her the next day to see if she was OK. She told me that she had reached the age where she had her drivers license revoked. She had no way to get to Bingo.
“‘I’m going to fix that,’ I told her.
I have now made arrangements for some of my fellow Bingo players to give her a ride, to and from the hall, each week. After a lifetime of playing Bingo, there was no way we were going to let her be left out. AC.”

* “Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour (fridge is best, or add ice often); dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quick-fry one more time for only a minute or so.” — T.C. in Idaho
* If you want to cool your canned drinks quickly, add water to the cooler with a lot of ice, submerge all drinks under the ice line, and wait about 20 minutes. Without the water, it takes much longer. The water extends the surface contact of the ice.
* To keep your ladder from sinking into soft sand or dirt, put each leg into a can or bucket. It creates a much larger surface area, thereby stabilizing the legs.
* If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry.
And, I know that good workers are hard to find, particularly at charity halls, but it would seem that no one is in charge sometimes.

So, until next month, thanks for being here. Bring someone with you next time. Let’s make sure that Bingo is always here. Bob.

* Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. — R.E. in Louisiana

Poetry
THOMAS
A new scholar braves the storm
To make his mark.
Well-clad as a totemic frog, Lunch box shining, shield-like Ready for action.
‘Brella raised as sword would be.

Unafraid, Well, mostly so. Excited, Well, even more.
His speedy feet shod into Perfect, unblemished sneakers.
What a mind in a brain That sits beneath that copper-colored thatch. As if each strand electrifies the next, and the next Emblazing the world, Calling out, “Do your best, my fine fellows. Do your best young women of all humankind. Do your best, mighty angels of thought.
Conquer all evils, I’ll aid and abet. Not too difficult if you trod on with me.”
Philosophy, metaphysics
Even thought-numbing science and math
Easy if you, Thomas,
And your totem move forward together
In crested creativity, inspired by evolving art.
Ask for help? No need. Arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music
All eagerly poised in your back pocket

Wait to spring into action
Into being.
A raindrop here
A flash of light there
An extra thump of heart, Then more resolve to meet This day, it’s challenge.

No delay.
Nourished, nuts and jam. Nurtured, kisses, hugs. Surrounded, assured that this is only one, The first of all the best steps.
Taken, explored, examined, Filed away, successful.
The scholar, unafraid, Well, mostly so.
Meets the challenge
Well, mostly with half-smiles. Mostly with the promise
Of his first day of school

Extreme Bingo
Hi Guy,
Do you have an opinion on the correct number of 9-ons a person should play? I never buy more than two and really prefer to play only one, but I see lots of players play four and six sheets per session, which seems extreme to me. How do they keep up? I would be so afraid I was missing numbers. At the same time, these people who play extra packs must have a

better chance of winning. Jay, via email

Hi Jay,

There is really no “correct number” of packs to play. It’s all a matter of how many you can handle comfortably.

I remember my early days of Bingo playing when I felt I needed to play extra packs to stay competitive, and ended up totally stressed out trying to keep up with the caller. One time two ladies sitting near me offered to help mark my cards, which told me I must have looked so frantic that complete strangers felt they needed to step in and rescue me. Funny now. Totally embarrassing then.
To this day, like you, I am astonished watching players who can cover half a table with Bingo paper and have no problem keeping up with the caller. It’s all about the magic of hand-eye
coordination: some folks are superstars at it, others are not.

Luckily, technology has caught up with we slow pokes. If you want to play more cards than you can physically manage, go to a Bingo hall with handheld Bingo devices. You can buy dozens of cards (if your wallet can handle it) and the machine does the tracking for you.
If you find you miss the thumpthump-thump of dauber on paper, buy one or two paper packs to play manually and make the rest electronic. That way you have the best of both worlds, with no strangers pitying you for your lackluster daubing skills. —Guy Hey guys! (And gals!) Write to: Guy’s Turn c/o The Bingo Bugle, P.O. JohnGaming Ethics

I was interviewed for a show on casino gambling and the host asked hypothetical questions to average gamblers and gambling experts. Most of the questions they asked me on the show had to do with blackjack and I thought it would be fun if I turned around and asked you how you would handle these situations.
Suppose you are playing blackjack and a sloppy dealer exposes her hole card. What would you do if that happened? Would you tell the dealer? Or would you say nothing and use the information to your advantage when it came time to play out your hand?
Some players feel it is unethical to take advantage of the casino by knowing the value of the dealer’s hole card. However, I feel differently and said so.
My position when it comes to sloppy dealers is this. It is not my responsibility to ensure that dealers are following casino procedures. Floor supervisors and surveillance should be on the lookout for dealers who are not following procedures and correct them. Since the information on the dealer’s hole card was available to any player on the table, and since I wasn’t in cahoots with the dealer in a pre-planned cheating scam, I see no reason why a player can’t use the information to his or her advantage.
It turned out an official from the Nevada Gaming Board agreed with my conclusion. A sloppy dealer exposing her hole card is an issue that the casino needs to address and there is nothing illegal about a player taking advantage of the information in this scenario.
The host of the show fired this
next question to me. “If you know the value of the hole card because of a sloppy dealer, would you share this information with one of your fellow players?” What would you do in this circumstance?
Several people that they interviewed on the show had mixed feelings about this. Some felt it was okay to use the information for their own benefit, but thought it was unethical to share that information with fellow players.
I felt otherwise. Blackjack is a social game; players often talk with each other. Now, I wouldn’t go out of my way to whisper to each player what the dealer’s hole card is, but if I had a friend or family member playing on the same table, I wouldn’t be averse to offering them advice on how they should play their hand based on what I knew was the dealer’s hole card.

Remember, it’s the casino’s responsibility to enforce their procedures and to be sure dealers aren’t exposing their hole card, and besides, there is nothing illegal about sharing information or offering another player advice on how to play their hand. You may not agree 100% with my response, but that is how I see it.
Another question the host asked me had to do with a cheating dealer. “What if you were playing blackjack and you have a strong suspicion that a fellow player and your dealer were involved in a cheating scam to bilk the casino? What would you do? Would you ignore the situation and just keep playing? Would you leave the table and discreetly inform a floor supervisor of the alleged cheating that you believe was going on? What would you do in this situation?
My response was to get off the table, and fast. The reason is that if the casino bosses discovered that the dealer was cheating, because you were playing on the table at the time the cheating occurred you could also have been implicated or at least held for questioning.
Plus, if the dealer was that good at cheating what’s to say the dealer wasn’t going to cheat you? I don’t remember what my response was regarding notifying a supervisor of the alleged cheating, but that’s a tough call. I could go either way on this and I guess even now I’m undecided whether I’d go out of my way and notify a supervisor or just leave (what would you do?).
What's News in Nevada
J Aff Tie the Knot
Jennifer Lopez (the former J Lo) and Ben Affleck recently tied the knot at a tiny 12:30 a.m. ceremony at the Little White Chapel on Las Vegas Blvd. a few blocks south of Fremont Street. Apparently, they were running a little late for the midnight reservation after picking up their license at 11:30, but the chapel stayed open to accommodate the love-struck superstars, who were previously engaged, but then broke up in 2004. According to the breathless reports, Jennifer wore two white dresses, one sleeveless to the chapel, the other sleeved that she donned while Ben was changing into his white tuxedo in the men’s room. The witnesses were Ben and Jen’s five children from previous marriages; it’s the fourth marriage for Jen, 52, and the second for Ben, 49. The marriage license reportedly shows that Jennifer is changing her last name to Affleck.
Formula One Attraction
Announced
Formula One has wasted no time making Las Vegas its own. Mere weeks after the late March announcement of the race itself, scheduled for November 25, 2023, the parent company picked up a 39-acre parcel at Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane for $240 million to establish a permanent presence here. Only a couple of months later, Formula 1 has revealed its plan for an “Experience” attraction on the property for Formula 1 fans. Speculation on the Experience at press time revolved around race simulators and a go-kart track, possibly a museum, definitely merchandising, almost certainly a bar and snack bar if not a full-scale restaurant, and whatever else the F1 creative team has up its sleeve.
Elton’s Last Hurrah
Originally not on the schedule for Elton John’s “last-ever” North American tour, one night at Allegiant Stadium has been added. The “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Final Tour” will stop in Las Vegas on November 1. It’s fitting that Elton includes Vegas on the tour; this is his most-played city in the world, with nearly 500 shows, including two multi-year residences, over the
course of his 50-plus-year career.
Silverton Turns 25 with a Refresh Silverton is turning 25 this year and will undergo a $45 million “reimagining.” The hotel rooms will be remodeled with three different “rustic-luxe” themes: Rustic Modern, Cowboy Kitsch, and Livin’ Lodge. The pool will also be redone. Both are scheduled to reopen early next year. The rest of the resort, including the casino, all the restaurants, and Bass Pro Shops, will remain open during the $45 million reconstruction.
Cannabis Lounge Regulations Approved
The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board finally approved the regulations for pot-smoking lounges. Consumption is restricted to a specific lounge area; only cannabis can be ingested (no alcohol, tobacco, etc.); lounges must take steps to reduce worker exposure to secondhand smoke, cannabis-impaired driving, and other safety-related rules; and lounges must provide free water. The state will issue 20 licenses; a lottery will select the licensees if applications exceed 20. The first lounges could open by the end of the year.

Circus Cranks up Coin Slots
Circus Circus, the only Strip casino remaining where you can play coin-operated slot machines, has added $5 machines to keep its $1 slots company. The press release identifies the payback at 97.4%, so your expectation is to lose 13 cents per $5 token.
Fried Maple Leaves? Oh My!
Getting older is like living in a haunted house; lots of noises, smells, bumps, and lumps that you just can’t explain. — Spice of Life
Good riddance to summer! I hate the heat and humidity that cause my allergies to be in full bloom and my temper to rise as the temps go up. Not to mention that I can’t sleep without the AC blasting and our ceiling fan on full tilt. My husband freezes while I continue kicking the bed covers off me. Anyway, the first day of Fall is September 23rd and I’m looking forward to apple cider, donuts, and colorful leaves that eventually spiral gracefully to their deaths on the ground. These dead leaves cause autumn to have a distinct smell, defined in my youth as burnt leaves.
Burning leaves is illegal most places these days, yet that autumn smell still lingers. It is said to be caused by the dead fallen leaves giving off gases that smell like chlorine or dryer vents. In Japan there is a seasonal treat called Momiji which is maple leaves dipped in sweetly seasoned tempura and then fried. If I were there, I would give it a try. In the meantime, I am content to take a deep breath without frying my lungs in the summer heat and to forget about dieting as I indulge my donut cravings. I will also go outside and
catch falling leaves in my hands as I’m told that doing so will summon good luck. As many leaves as can be caught in my chubby little hands will signal that many happy months to follow. Would it be cheating if I used a catcher’s mitt?
My brother, David, was born on September 1st so for me he ushers in this glorious season. Did you know that there are more babies born in September than any other month? Hmmm. If one counts back nine months to January, one of the coldest months, it’s easy to see why. We stay indoors, tire of television or reading, and get bored. You can figure out the rest. I might also add that research shows that those born September through November are more likely to live to be one hundred. If you do, odds are that you will probably be a grandparent or great-grandparent which means you will be celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, designated Grandparents Day since 1979.
That is followed on September 21st by World Gratitude Day which celebrates our mere existence on planet Earth. Those who are a hundred at that time have a lot to be grateful for and the rest of us who haven’t reached that golden age can be grateful for all we have and for all that is yet to come. We should count our blessings and not whine about a lack of winning at bingo or other gambling ventures. Self-pity attracts bad mojo and wrong energy that scares away good luck. My husband and I should take that advice and stop whining about our long losing streaks at bingo and in casinos. I picture Lady Luck with her fingers plugging her ears as she races away from this losing twosome.
Until next month, may the aforementioned Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Email me and I will reply after I finish chasing runaway leaves: nlpvzw6172@ gmail.com
