Nancy Nawrocki was born to eternal life on Septem ber 3, 2022. Everyone who knew her, loved her. Those includ ed her late Mom and Dad, her sisters Patti (Don), Kim (Bob) and the late Lisa, Jimmie and Thomas. She is further survived by her nephew Bobby and his two dogs Opie and Ruby who she called her buddies.

Practice Joy

Dear Aunt Bingo,

I love when Bingo players show excitement when they win. At the same time, I find it disturbing when someone wins a large jackpot and acts like it is no big deal.

Here are two contrasting examples that occurred during the same Bingo session:

A gentleman won a pick-8 in 19 numbers for $10,000 and showed not one bit of emotion or excitement—even after being handed the check for $10,000.

A short time later, a lady won a regular Bingo for $100 and was shaking so badly she could barely sign her name on the winning form. She was so excited about winning $100 that people around her heard her say out loud, “I think I’m gonna pee my pants!”

When the Bingo session ended, this lady was still smiling from ear to ear over winning $100, while

the gentleman who won $10,000 nonchalantly walked to his car. —Jim M., Portland, Oregon

Dear Jim,

It’s rarely possible to predict human behavior—especially when it comes to showing emotion. One person might express their joy by jumping up and down and screaming uncontrollably. Another might be jumping up and down and screaming uncontrollably on the inside, on the outside they give the impression that they couldn’t care less.

I’m pretty confident that this is exactly what was going on with your $10,000 winner. How could anyone not be excited about so substantial a win? But he chose to play it cool—because that’s how he was taught to behave, or perhaps because he simply didn’t want to rub it in the faces of all the players who didn’t win.

Then there is your $100 winner, bless her. Clearly, she is not the sort of person who can or has ever been able to hold it in. Shaking hands, ceaseless smile—this lady obviously wears her emotions on her sleeve for everyone to see. If she didn’t, she’d probably explode.

Like you, I would much rather see a person express their happiness outwardly and not keep it bottled up. Joy is contagious. Spread it around! —Aunt Bingo

Could it be PTSD?

Do you ever wonder if you possibly have PTSD? The Department of Veterans Affairs has created a very short PTSD screening webpage designed to see whether any symptoms you have could be related to posttraumatic stress disorder.

The screening test consists of five short questions.

It’s worth doing the screening if you have any doubts or concerns after going through a traumatic or life-threatening event. PTSD can arrive either immediately after an event or later, or even come and go. It can affect anyone of any age. There’s no set pattern, but there are certain symptoms, and that’s where this short screening comes into play.

Go online to www.ptsd.va.gov/ screen and click to “Start Screen.” No, you don’t need to give any personal information or even sign in.

When you get to the end of the questions, click on “Next Steps”

and see the information that’s offered, including the phone number for immediate help: 800273-8255. Press 1 if you’re a veteran. Or you can text 838255.

The instructions suggest you take a screenshot or print the score page to take with you to a health-care provider. Probably not a bad idea, because it gives your provider a place to begin.

For more information about PTSD, go to www.ptsd.va.gov/ understand/what/ptsd_basics.asp. Scroll down to the three information blocks and explore what they offer.

“Understanding PTSD and PTSD Treatment” (PDF) is a 16-page guide to PTSD basics and is a good place to get a handle on it.

Remember that this screening isn’t a true diagnosis. Only a real provider can diagnose PTSD, but this can give you a start in the right direction if you have concerns. Remember, too, that there are quite a few different treatments for PTSD, and the sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll feel better.

You’re not alone.

PICKS OF THE MONTH

Elvis (PG-13) — The new biopic film about Elvis Presley hailing from director Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby and William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet) is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video. Austin Butler gives a stunning performance as the King of Rock and Roll, having immersed himself deeply into the character for years leading up to the film’s release. The film explores Elvis’ humble beginnings, the lifechanging influence that the rhythm and blues genre had on him, as well as his ill-fated relationship with his manager, Col. Tom Parker. With eye-catching visual effects and a lead actor who will surely be nominated this coming award season, Elvis is an unforgettable watch. (Prime Video)

The End is Nye (NR) — A Peacock original docu-series featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy just released its first season. In his signature lighthearted-yetsincere tone, Bill Nye takes on six hypothetical apocalyptic disasters and provides a science-based solution to survive every single

one. Whether it’s a super-volcano eruption, five hurricanes circulating Earth at the same time or a comet plunging into the planet, Bill Nye has all the steps humanity could take to save our home. He underscores climate change and how we need to alter our relationship with the place we call home so that we have a thriving planet for future generations. (Peacock)

Incantation (TV-MA) — In this hair-raising Taiwanese horror film, a woman named Ronan (Hsuanyen Tsai), along with her boyfriend, Dom, and Dom’s cousin, Yuan, venture out into the village of the Chen clan. While staying in the village overnight, Dom and Yuan unleash a curse onto themselves, prompting their overnight stay to go terribly wrong. Ronan, who finds out she’s pregnant during the chaos, is the only one to survive. After giving birth to her daughter, Dodo, Ronan gives her up to foster care, while she visits a psychiatrist for ways to cope. When Ronan assumes care of Dodo again six years later, Dodo starts seeing visions, and Ronan realizes the curse continues to live on. (Netflix)

Standing In

Kate frequently helps me with research for my writing. Once she was caught trying to get out of a dumb waiter in an old hotel just to see if such a thing might be possible for a private eye I was writing about. The staff member who caught her was not sympathetic to her research and she was asked to leave and not return.

Another time she spent 24 hours in a wheelchair to experience the frustration of not being able to reach pay phones, find a way to the beach or get in and out of a bathroom. Her enthusiasm and verve are hard to match and have been invaluable help. I think the hotel personnel might disagree.

The other night at Bingo the lady who sat next to me suddenly got up between games and went to stand by a window, her left arm and hand raised as high as she could get them. Until that moment, I had

thought her quite ordinary, but, clearly, here was a different side to her. No one approached to ask her what, if anything, was wrong. Her face took on a solemn look and she stood very still.

“Should I play her cards?” I asked Kate.

“Of course,” Kate replied. “It is what you would want someone to do for you if you had to go stand…” her voice trailed off. Neither of us had any idea why she was standing there.

Naturally one of her cards won so I carefully put the money with her other papers. The standing lady still stood very quietly except that her left hand now drooped over the upright arm. Players kept stealing quick looks at her and then looking courteously away.

“Her name is Carolyn,” I said, having looked at some of her papers.

We played on, frequently checking Carolyn, who continued to stand motionless.

Our friend, Janey, came over and asked about her. “Do you know who she is?” we both shook our heads. “I wonder if that position feels good?” We both admitted we had no idea. “Looks like an old game of Statues,” said Janey, “only no one else is playing.”

At the end of play, after most of the players left, Carolyn came quietly back to her seat, picked up her papers and daubers and prepared to leave. “Where did this money come from?” she asked softly.

“You won that,” I replied. “I played your cards and you won.”

“Then you must keep it,” she said, holding out the money to me. “You won it—I didn’t.”

“They were your cards,” I objected. We ended the disagreement by putting her winnings in the tip jar for the caller and workers—no doubt the biggest tip they had received in ages. Carolyn waved and walked away, then returned to say, “I have a nerve disorder that is sometimes alleviated by elevating my arm and hand. Hope it didn’t freak you out.”

Then she was gone. I look forward to seeing her again

Why Can’t People Behave?

Hi, again, everyone. I hope your summer went well and you are ready for more months of the game we all love the best. I have been getting a lot of e-mail lately: bobonbingo@earthlink.net. But I am happy to announce that I have a new email address. It’s simpler than the old one: bingo@ earthlink.net. Now, you will never forget it.

So, here is the latest from the mailbag. Diane E., of Cleveland writes: “Dear Bob. I am becoming more and more upset at the way some of the regular Bingo players at the non-profit where I play are acting. I know many of them have been here since Day One, but they are getting nasty.

“Recently, many of the players have been heckling one of the callers. He is a very articulate older fellow who enjoys what he is doing. As a matter of fact, he is the OPPOSITE of being ‘cut and dried’ about what he does. Now and then, he throws in short comments. And, Bob, as you have often mentioned, he gives nicknames to some of the numbers. But, some of the players have been yelling at him to HURRY UP.

“I became so upset with the way the guy was being treated that I recently brought a stopwatch to the games. I began to notice that he actually was just as quick at calling Bingo when he was being funny as when he wasn’t. Bob, why are people like that? I am getting to the point where I hate going to that place. So, last night I told the caller what a good job he is doing and how I hate when he is heckled. He smiled at me, and it brightened my night. —Diane.”

Diane, I have seen that happen, more and more. If you remember, several months ago, I had the chance to be a Bingo caller at the old grade school where I first played Bingo in 1957. It was tougher work than I thought it would be. Calling Bingo is NOT easy. It takes an enormous amount of concentration and organization. And, remember one thing: If you think you can do a better job of calling Bingo? Try it sometime. And, also, if you play at a nonprofit, NO ONE GETS A SALARY. The poor guy that Diane E. wrote

about was a VOLUNTEER. He was trying his best. And, the side comments he inserted were being voiced because he loves the game.

* To test the seals on your refrigerator and freezer, close a piece of paper in the door. If you can pull it out easily, it’s likely that your seal is loose. Clean or replace door gaskets for a better seal.

* To keep vinyl seats bearable in summer heat, keep a few towels in your car and lay them over the seat. This also keeps the plastic parts of baby seats from burning little legs and arms.

* You can use plain white bread to get fingerprints and smudges off of wallpaper and semigloss painted walls. Just ball up the bread center (not the crust) and rub the smudge away.

* “Out of prewash and looking at a nasty grease stain? Grab your dishwashing liquid soap (not the one you would put in your automatic dishwasher). It’s designed to break down grease, and I just dab it on, scrub a bit, then let it set for about a quarter hour. After that, I launder in hot water. It’s usually successful.” — via email

Over the Shoulder Bingo “Helper”

Hi Guy,

I play Bingo with a couple of my buddies every week. We have a good time and win occasionally, and recently agreed that we would start pooling our winnings and split it so that we would get the feeling we each win more often.

Now I think this may have been a mistake. Not about sharing the money…that part is fine. But one

of the guys in my group, I will call him Ed, now feels it is his obligation to watch everybody’s Bingo cards and not just his own. Now when the caller calls a Bingo ball, Ed immediately checks our paper and will say: “You have that Bob, you have that Jim,” like we have all of a sudden been struck blind. He is so worried that he is going to miss out on a jackpot because he is counting on three other guys that he basically is trying to play the whole table!

I told him once to keep his eyes on his own Bingo cards, but it only lasted about 10 minutes. I told him a second time and he got mad and barely spoke the rest of the night. The next week I didn’t say a word, even after he started watching our cards and pointing out numbers again.

Ed is a good friend and I don’t want to stop playing Bingo with him. But he is spoiling the fun by watching my cards. What do

you suggest I do? —Annoyed in Washington

Hi Annoyed,

This is an easy one. The whole problem started when you all agreed to pool your winnings. Obviously, this has caused Ed concern. The only answer I see is that you call off the pool and go back to playing and winning as individuals, so that Ed can stop worrying about everyone else’s cards and go back to concentrating on his own.

The only hitch here is whether you have already won games as a group and split the money. If this has happened once or twice, then the members of the pool who shared their winnings may be irritated that the sharing has ended before they got a cut of someone else’s pot. If this is the case, some of you may have to give back their cut—and I suspect if Ed is one of them, he’ll be none too happy

Which brings us back to staying with the pool. It sounds like you all wanted it in the beginning; so, why not stay with it, and have someone step up and have a heart-to-heart with Ed about ending his habit of watching everyone’s cards. Explain to him that if he can’t stop, the pool will end. This way, he is given all the power to decide what happens next, and that should appeal to him.

My hope is that your buddy Bingo pool, like your friendship, will survive, and that Ed will come around. —Guy

Video Poker Tips

No. 1: Play video poker games that have the highest Expected Return (ER). Expected Return (ER) is a percentage that tells the theoretical amount of money you can expect to win in the long run assuming you play every hand perfectly. The most important variable that determines the ER is the game’s pay schedule. For example, a Jacks or Better game that returns 9 times the amount bet for a full house and 6 times for a flush (known as a 9/6 game) has an ER of 99.54%, meaning over time a skillful player can expect to get back 99.54% of the money bet. This assumes that the player is using the basic playing strategy for this game (i.e., is making no playing mistakes). You’ll often find Jacks or Better games that pay 8/5 or worse 7/5 for the full house/flush. The corresponding ERs for these games are 97.3% and 96.15% respectively and a skillful player would never play these games.

How do you know what the ER is for any video poker game? After all, the casino manager isn’t going to tell you which game in his casino has a high ERs and which ones have low ERs. No, that’s the player’s responsibility to figure out. However, that’s OK because it’s quite easy to learn what the ER is for any video poker game.

Many video poker books and internet sites list the ERs for different video poker games. By reading these books or visiting these web sites, you’ll learn what

the ER’s are for different video poker games based on their pay schedule. Two good video poker books that I can recommend are Frugal Video Poker by Jean Scott and Viktor Nacht, and Video Poker for the Intelligent Beginner by Bob Dancer.

Once you decide which video poker game you want to play (presumably one with at least a 99% or higher ER), you need to check if the game is available at your local casino. To do this, go to www.vpfree2.com and check the region you are interested in (e.g., Las Vegas, Gulf Coast, East, etc.). You’ll get a listing of the video poker games with the highest ER’s for each casino in that region.

Tip No. 2: Learn the basic playing strategy. In order to achieve the high ERs, you have to learn the basic playing strategy. This is not as hard as you think. You’ll find the basic strategy for different video poker games in the above books or websites (e.g., www. wizardofodds.com). However, the best way to learn the strategy is by using a video poker computer software trainer. When you make a playing mistake, the software will alert you and show you what the correct play is. The software will also track playing accuracy and show you how much playing errors cost you.

Tip No. 3: You should bring a video poker strategy card that contains the playing strategy with you to the casino. These strategy cards are casino legal and you can refer to them if you not sure how to play a hand. By having them with you, you’ll always play with 100% accuracy.

Tip No. 4: Always sign up for a casino’s player’s card and use it every time you play video poker. You’ll get cash back or free play, comps, and mailers from the casino that usually contain more free play offers. These benefits will boost your overall return from playing video poker to at or slightly above 100% (if you are over 100%, you’ll be playing with an edge).

What are you waiting for? Make a goal to get started learning how to be a smart video poker player. You’ll never look back once you do it.

What's News in Nevada

Adele at Nobu Villa

The Nobu Villa is getting some attention. It’s the penthouse suite at Nobu Hotel, the 181-room boutique hotel within a hotel that occupies 10 completely overhauled floors of the original Centurion Tower, which opened in 1970, at Caesars Palace. The rooftop Villa is 10,300-square feet and accessible by a private elevator; it features three bedrooms and three baths, an omakase sushi bar, media and game room, gym and massage room, art gallery, plus a 4,700-square-foot patio overlooking the Strip, with a barbecue pit, full bar, fire and water fixture, and a secluded Zen garden with an Italian-made spa. The Villa also comes with a butler and 24-hour room service. It lists for $30,000 per night. It’s just been announced that Adele will be staying there during her residency, a mere $2.7 million freebie for her 90 nights in Vegas.

Cake & Pizza Vending Machines

Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro has two cake vending machines on the Strip, both at Harrah’s. Now, Valastro is jumping on a new vending-machine phenomenon: pizza. VegasChanges.com reports (and has photos) that at least one new pizza vending machine has appeared at the LINQ. Apparently, it’s not operating yet, but it should be soon. For some background on this new style of pizza delivery, check out the story on Thrillist.com.

Wynn Win

A player firing up $50 a hand on a Dragon Link progressive slot machine at Wynn Las Vegas recently hit the jackpot for roughly $1.5 million.

MGM Takes Over Cosmo Sports Book

The Cosmopolitan recently took its

first sports wager as the BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge. It’s a small but cool and comfortable book, with a center video poker bar and lounge (already branded as a BetMGM venue), some game tables (foosball, table shuffleboard), LED video wall, betting counters, and kiosks. The book’s conversion to BetMGM officially launches Cosmo’s transition to becoming an MGM Resorts property, with more changes in the works.

Jonas Brothers Encore

The Jonas Brothers pop band has announced a three-night reprise of their residency earlier this summer at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The group stated in a tweet, “Just like last time, we will be playing a different set list every single night.” The dates are November 10, 11, and 12 at 8 p.m.

Snoop Helps Stewart

Snoop Doggy Dog, the 50-year old rapper, actor, media personality, and dedicated family man is an unlikely friend of 81-year-old retail and media mogul Martha Stewart’s, but there it is. And it’s quite heartwarming. The two met in 2008 when Martha, for some unknown reason, invited Snoop to appear on her Martha Stewart Show and the two bonded over a bowl of mashed potatoes. Snoop made a second appearance making brownies; then they sat together at a 2015 Comedy Central roast of Justin Bieber. The pair went on to launch the VH1 hit show, the Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party in 2016. So, it was no surprise when Snoop made an appearance to help Martha open her new restaurant at Paris, the Bedford. “She’s the big sister I never had,” Snoop says. “Being able to correct me, to teach me, to show me how to be better, to give me something to aspire to be.”

Anyone for Flutternutter?

If zombies chase us, I’m tripping you! Nothing personal. –Anonymous

The wind blows and the leaves fall down. It’s October, or as some of our ancestors called it Wyn Monath, wine month, because it was the time of year for making wine. Although I don’t care for trick or treating and Halloween pranks, any month involving wine can’t be all bad; not to mention the annual beer bash Oktoberfest which many American communities celebrate. Originating in Germany, it usually runs sixteen days ending on the first weekend in October. I can drink either wine or beer with gusto, but I have to say nothing beats a pizza and a cold beer on Friday night after a long week.

Two October treats of the noncandy variety that I love are the Simpsons’ Halloween special episodes, The Treehouse of Horror and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Trivia: the first TV character to Trick-or-Treat was lovable little Charlie Brown. More trivia: in 2011 over the course of two days, Ray Villafane created the world’s largest pumpkin sculpture. He used two pumpkins with one weighing 1,818 pounds and the other 1,693 pounds to create a zombie apocalypse. I’m a fan of zombie movies so I would have loved seeing this creation. Zombie movies are best viewed in the dark and I’ve watched many during October’s scary movie marathons.

I fondly remember one October when I curled up on the couch with my two young daughters and we watched not zombies, but that scary movie Halloween We all ended up huddling under a blanket with my husband calling us scared weenies. My daughters still mention it and laughingly call it child abuse. I call it a family bonding.

Now, about flutternutter. I first heard of this a few days ago when I discovered that October 8 is National Flutternutter Day. I asked friends and family about it and they gave me puzzled looks. Flutternutter is a sweet sandwich of buttered bread, marshmallow fluff and peanut butter with bananas and bacon sometimes added. Sounds tasty, but why did I not know about this before now? Maybe because flutternutter is very popular in New England whereas I am a southern Ohio gal.

Growing up, my favorite sandwich was biscuit, onion, mustard, and gravy. Stop gagging and take that frown off your face, lol. We always had peanut butter and sometimes regular marshmallows that Mom used for cooking, but no marshmallow fluff. I guess I was deprived as a child, but how could I miss what I never knew existed. Now that I do, I’ll buy a jar of fluff and tickle my taste buds. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big.

And to relieve stress if you’re a perpetual Bingo loser like Robert and I, on October 12, go outside at noon and scream as if the devil were biting your butt. It’s Moment of Frustration Scream Day and that means however you’re frustrated, you can go outside and let out your loudest howl. You will scare the bejeesus out of your neighbors and they might call the police, but just explain why you’re screaming. Your neighbors can join you; or, the police might arrest you for disturbing the peace. Your odds are fifty-fifty.
