The Historic Angus Herd Award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 years or more. The American Angus Association® is honored to recognize Coulter Angus, Congerville, Ill., as a Historic Angus Herd. Kenneth Coulter was 15-years-old when he purchased his first Angus heifer in 1937; bred by Eglin Bros. Farm. The heifer was popular in the showring and won championship titles at many shows, including junior champion at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. As a young man, Kenneth helped fit and exhibit the Central Illinois Association show herd across the country. After serving in the Air Corps, Coulter continued his passion for Angus and acquired more cattle to expand his herd. Many head originated from Timberline Farms and Central Illinois Angus sales. Over the years, they used Timberline bulls, purchased bulls from Ankony Angus and other operations. Coulter Angus was also an early adopter of artificial insemination (A.I.) in the 1960s and still use the technology on the herd today. The Coulter family grew in a similar fashion. Together with his wife, Madeline, and their four children, they showed cattle at numerous county, state and national shows and were very involved in 4-H. The Coulter children’s herd then helped finance the four kids’ college education. The Coulter Angus herd numbers are currently around 50 head of cows with ownership from son Kevin Coulter and grandson Matt Coulter. Coulter Angus joins nine other historical Angus operations recognized by the American Angus Association in 2012: Walter D. Shealy III, Black Grove, Newberry, S.C.; William B. and Nancy S. Byars, Fortuna, Mo.; Sam and Doris Lefevre, Lefevre Angus Farm, Butler, Mo.; Dennis Lopez, Diablo Valley Angus, Byron, Calif.; Bobby Aldridge, Oakview Angus, Yanceyville, N.C.; Weiker Angus Ranch, Fayette, Mo.; Tracy and Mark Pedretti, Prairie Du Chien, Wis.; Randy Kessler, Milton-Freewater, Ore.; and Goodfellow Angus, Bruce, S.D.

Madeline and Kenneth Coulter accept the Historic Herd Award from American Angus Association representative Jerry Cassady.

Dave Cox has always known that he would be a farmer. The love of the land has coursed through his veins from an early age while working on his father’s farm to the place he currently calls home, Pasture View Angus. Although his dad, Richard worked for Caterpillar until his retirement in 1992, the work ethic, life lessons and ‘cattle ways’ he passed on to Dave are as deeply ingrained in his life as the land. “I became interested in cattle while in grade school,” shares Dave. “Dad had a few cows at that time, and I just knew that my life would center around farming. I am so blessed that my father is still with us and can see what I’ve accomplished. Even though he’s been in a wheelchair for 20 years, he never has a bad day. Dad was the best inspiration a boy could have asked for!” In 1977, after high school graduation, Dave went to work at the local fertilizer plant. Along with that he painted cars and operated his own body shop. He recalls how when he would take a beaten-up rusted-out car that he had gotten from a local dealership, back to them they would just shake their heads and couldn’t believe how nice it looked. He proudly shared when his children were old enough, he taught them the art of restoring cars - and they use it everyday in their adult life! Several years later the fertilizer plant was offered for sale to the managers, and Dave made the decision to buy it. He is now going into his thirtieth year of ownership, taking a one-man operation to a company that has twelve full-time employees. “I learned about taking care of customers through my fertilizer business, states Dave. “It’s all about taking care of the people. I didn’t have a college education, but I knew how to work hard and treat people fair. That’s what my father taught me - to be honest and fair.” Dave and Dawn Cox were married in 1978 and shared the dreamed of one day owning cows and horses. In 1992, once the fertilizer business was established, they purchased their 80-acre home place and their first cows. That set of twelve registered cow was not only bought from, but was also financed by, Jim Maher of Princeville Ill. “Then he sold me a bull and I was in the Angus business,” he laughingly states. Thank god for people like Jim to give a young man a chance. I think if Jim was with us today he would be excited at what I have accomblished from those twelve cows. ‘’ Dave has spent the last 20 years or so building a program based on easy calving, strong growth females with good udders and bulls with big butts, clean fronts and good dispositions. The Pasture View herd, consisting of 200 cows, has not and will never be based solely on the numbers. “I like them to look like show animals, 10 illinoisnews@bingmanpub.com ~ AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

but do the work they’re meant to do,” states Dave. “I’ve met some tremendous people during my Angus journey. Local guys like Bud Hobbs ,Fred Swanson ,Bill Hauk, and The Weaver program ,” states Dave. “I’ve looked up to those guys the whole time I’ve been involved in the Angus breed. I’ll be the first to tell you every year I go to Denver, Illinois is represented better than any other state in the union when it comes to the cattle business as far as I’m concerned. The Angus community as a whole is by far the best set of individuals in the cattle industry.” The herd was not the only thing growing at Pasture View. In 2003 a 100-acre pasture, located about 20 minutes away in Trivoli, was purchased. The house and buildings on that acreage was acquired in2010 and the job of restoring those facilities began. Dave shares how the house’s dormers and what was left of the barns were painted purple and in serious need of repair. The house was rebuilt from the foundation up and the barns were restored with new foundation blocks, walls, gables and paddocks. Before and after photos can be viewed on their website: pastureviewangus.com. That house is now occupied by Tamee and Grant Bedel, who recently came aboard as farm manager, and, after relocating the cattle, the program is now based from that location. Dave shares that Tammy keeps the house looking like the ‘Taj Mahal’ and that is a good thing since they have people drive by just to see how they’ve fixed it up. He also shares that the property use to be home to a 500-head cattle farm owned and operated by Clifford Higgs. Grant and herdsman Scott Reader handle all day-to-day operations at Pasture View. Dave would like to be there more, but is unable to due to the constraints of owning the fertilizer business. Dave has nothing but praise for his team, sharing that they work really well together. He feels blessed to have both of them. He had been trying to get Grant to come on board for years, and Scott, came with a Masters in Animal Science. “Scott loves the cattle, he really takes it to heart when we lose one. Grant can do it all. Good clipper and still has showing cattle running in his veins. I have learned so much from the two of them.” With all things in place - genetics from solid females out of industry leading bulls, hard-working employees, and the facilities in tip-top shape - the time has come for Pasture View to hold it’s Inaugural Sale. Until three years ago, cattle were sold through private treaty only. Dave remembers one fellow in particular, who would visit the farm, buy bulls for $900-1,200, take them out west and sell them for a higher price. “I’ll never forget him, he used to come back laughing about what he would get out of the bulls,” Dave fondly remembers. “After he died I thought, ‘this was silly to let somebody come here, buy my bulls, and sell them for a higher price out west, or buy them and start their sales off with them,’ which is what happened with another buyer.” So, with that in mind, Dave phoned that Nebraska

contact where he had been taking the bulls and a great working relationship was formed. The Nebraska gentleman indicated that he had been waiting for someone like Dave to call, and that ‘yes we absolutely want to work with you, and yes we’ll take care of your bulls!’ For the past three years, the bulls have gone to Nebraska in December. The first year they sold 20 bulls for an average of $2,650; the second year 35 bulls averaged $3,500; and this past year 50 bulls averaged $3,200 with the top bull going for $7,000, which was amazing to Dave since the area had been going through a severe drought and 2,000 cows were sold during that event. “We take our bulls to Nebraska in part due to the fact that there are so many other good breeders in this area and we don’t want to step on anybody’s toes,” Dave states. “Hobbs has a great sale, Lynnbrook Farms has a heck of a bull business, and you have Damerons, Weavers, Musgraves, Top Line, Werners and Curtins, just to mention a few. TJ’s grandfather is another man I’ve admired from the day I met him. It just works better for us to take our bulls out West, it’s been very successful for us.” And it’s worked well for the folks in Nebraska too. Pasture View’s breeding program has been accepted as well as Dave and Dawn have. Last year they loaded up a camper and visited 12 of the ranches that had purchased their bulls. Dave shares how the Nebraska folks were tickled to death to see them, and even said they had never had anyone do a follow-up on bulls before. “They showed us around, fed us really good, and invited us back,” remarks Dave. “They are just as proud of their operations as we are. They’re hard working people and it was very rewarding to go out there and see how those folks make their living and to know we’re a part of it. We look forward to our next visit out West.” Dave and Dawn Cox, their children, Stephanie,Matt & Beau , Grant and Tamee, Scott, and the entire Pasture View Angus staff invite all to come to their Inaugural Sale, October 26 at the Home farm in Dunlap. They will be selling 10 Spring Heifers, 15 Spring Bred Heifers, 15 Bred Cows, and10 Fall Cow/Calf Pairs.

Genetics will be offered from strong cow families such as BA Lady 6807 308 a daughter of 6807. She is a cow you dream of owning. We will have three bulls by different sires out of her for our Denver Pen in January. Progeny from Upward, UpShot,, Connelly Thunder, S A V Angus Valley (the first Angus Valley calves on the ground), Bismarck, Brilliance and Nation Wide will be available as well. The ‘Special Sale Offering’ is SAV Blackcap May 7872, who is bred to S A V Priority, and a full sister to SAV 4136 who is one of the most impactful female in the SAV herd. Dave shares his final thoughts, “We want to become known as an elite breeding program. Not necessarily a show animal program, and that is not saying we don’t have some that would fit right in a show pen, but one that breed’s the biggest stoutest bulls to raise the best cows possible with an emphasis on udders and structure. We are working towards getting some of our bulls into a stud program. We take such good care of our cows, Jerry Cassady, on a recent visit to the farm, said ‘If I were a cow, I’d want to live here!’”

Angus Foundation Announces Lifetime Giving Program

The program recognizes supporters who have contributed $25,000 or more to the Angus Foundation since its inception in 1980. The Angus Foundation has been fortunate to have the support of many financial contributors since its inception in 1980. These donors and their selfless contributions have made growth possible in the Angus breed by advancing youth, education and research programs. Donor support was further magnified during the Angus Foundation’s first capital campaign, Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus, which concluded in 2011. The Angus Foundation and its Board of Directors realizes many Angus breeders and friends have dedicated their lives to support the Angus breed past their farm or ranch, and it is only appropriate to honor those individuals as “lifetime giving” supporters. This is why, at its September 2012 meeting, the Angus Foundation Board of Directors approved the implementation of an Angus Foundation Lifetime Giving Program. To be recognized as a lifetime giving supporter, donors must give at least $25,000 collectively to the Angus Foundation since it was established in 1980. Angus Foundation and American Angus Association® staff members

have tracked all financial contributions since 1980 to make this program come to life. “Recognizing Angus breeders, allied industry interests and friends for their generous accumulative support to the Angus Foundation through this new lifetime giving program, affords us one more way to convey our genuine heartfelt appreciation for all they’ve done for our organization over the years,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Their dedication and devotion to furthering the Angus Foundation’s mission, as illustrated by them achieving these significant lifetime giving milestones, is an inspiration to all of us involved in the Angus breed.” Donors will be recognized once they reach the Lifetime Angus Platinum Benefactor level ($25,000 - $49,000) and when they reach each subsequent level of giving: Lifetime Angus Patron ($50,000 - $99,999), Lifetime Angus Builder ($100,000 - $249,999), Lifetime Angus Leader ($250,000 $499,999), Lifetime Angus Visionary ($500,000 - $999,999) and Lifetime George Grant Angus Founder ($1,000,000 and above). Donors who have already reached a level of giving

12 illinoisnews@bingmanpub.com ~ AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

past the Lifetime Angus Platinum Benefactor to-date will be recognized beginning at their appropriate lifetime giving level. Angus Foundation lifetime giving supporters will be recognized, separate from annual giving levels, on the Angus Foundation’s website, and in the Angus Foundation’s annual report, newsletter and Angus Journal beginning in the fall of 2013. Lifetime giving supporters will also receive lifetime invitations to the Angus Foundation’s Annual Supporter Recognition Event and will be recognized at the event accordingly. The 2013 Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event, hosted Saturday, Nov. 16 in Louisville, Ky., will be the first time lifetime giving supporters will be recognized. The Angus Foundation is also providing the opportunity for lifetime giving supporters to receive a plaque each time they reach a new lifetime giving level. Most importantly though, lifetime giving supporters receive lifelong reward and meaningful satisfaction in being a major supporter of the future of the Angus breed and serve as an inspiration to other supporters in reaching higher giving levels.

American Angus Auxiliary Heifer Purchased for $5,500 Proceeds benefit the Auxiliary’s scholarships and awards endowment. Promoting youth and the Angus breed is a main priority for the American Angus Auxiliary. Thanks to Tom McGinnis of Heritage Farm, Shelbyville, Ky., who purchased the 2013 American Angus Auxiliary Heifer, the tradition continues. The heifer brought $5,500 during the All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity on June 16 in Louisville, Ky. Through her earnings, the elite female EXAR Rita 5681, donated from Express Ranches of Yukon, Okla., will provide for many Angus youth in the continuation of their education. The October 2011 daughter of Connealy Consensus 7229 offers a long line of topquality genetics including GAR EXT 614, a female whose progeny have broken several individual sale records in the Angus breed history. “We sincerely thank the donors, Express Ranches, and buyers, Heritage Farm, for helping us in our commitment to the Angus breed and its junior members,” says Cortney Hill-Dukehart-Cates, Auxiliary President. “We’re thrilled about the opportunity that this will bring to others and continuing our mission.” McGinnis says the heifer comes from some of the best genetics in the business right now, and he’s excited to incorporate her into his

herd. “Because of their commitment to Angus youth through scholarships and award endowments, I feel fortunate to be able to help the American Angus Auxiliary in its mission,” McGinnis says. “Purchasing the Auxiliary heifer is a worthwhile investment, and I am glad to see those dollars being passed on to the next generation of Angus leaders.” All proceeds from the auction benefit the Auxiliary’s scholarship and awards endowments, which the Angus Foundation maintains. The scholarship and awards endowments benefit 10 Auxiliary scholarships; the Crystal, Grote and Spader Awards; the Silver Pitcher Award; the Miss American Angus contest; the All-American Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB) Cook-off contest; and the National Showmanship Awards. The awards and scholarships are presented annually during the National Junior Angus Show, which is held this year in Kansas City, Mo., July 5-11. For more information about the heifer auction or the American Angus Auxiliary, visit www.angusauxiliary.com. Find out more about the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Endowment Fund and other endowments maintained by the Angus Foundation at www. angusfoundation.org.

Many Angus supporters came together at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Kansas City, Mo., to support the 2013 Angus Foundation Silent Auction July 8-11, which grossed $11,900 in proceeds benefiting the Foundation’s education, youth and research programs. Individual donors and state Angus associations contributed 116 items to the 18th annual auction. “Always an enjoyable activity at the NJAS, the silent auction over the years has become a popular activity for show attendees,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Spirited bidding between Angus friends, even family members, makes for wonderful fun with everyone having a shared interest of raising funds and helping the Angus Foundation. Without our generous donors and bidders, this fundraiser wouldn’t be possible!” Bill, Donna and Trey Conley of Conley Angus, Clarksdale, Mo., purchased the top-selling item for $700. This item was a hand-crafted whiskey barrel wine cellar and was donated by the “Aberdeen in Twenty Thirteen” 2013 NJAS Committee. The second high-selling item was a hand-made toy corral set, complete with animals. The set was donated by Leo and Sam McDonnell, Columbus, Mont., and Steve and Ginger Olson of Olson Cattle Company, Hereford, Texas, were the winning bidders on this item for $600. From its inception in 1995, the silent auction has grown annually as a fundraiser that generates unrestricted financial support for various activities sponsored by the Angus Foundation, such as the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference, Cattlemen’s Boot Camps and research projects that find solutions for the Angus breed and cattle industry.

2014 Illinois Performance Tested Bulls selection period under way Seedstock breeders planning to consign at the 2014 Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale should begin identifying bulls they plan to bring to the sale, set for Thursday, Feb. 20, taking into account current health requirements, genetic traits, carcass data requirements, and meeting all deadlines for entry, said IPT Bull Sale manager Travis Meteer. The 46th annual sale will act as the lead-off event at the annual Illinois Beef Expo in February at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The sale accepts bulls with a birthdate range of Jan. 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013. The IPT Bull Sale advisory committee, along with Illinois Beef Association staff, beef industry representatives, University of Illinois Extension, and U of I College of Veterinary Medicine, recently met to review the 2013 sale and to formulate plans for the 2014 sale. The 2014 sale will be organized by U of I Extension, U of I Department of Animal Sciences, cooperating breeders, and industry representatives. Multi-trait economic selection indexes will be the foundation for determining sale order, Meteer explained. The sale order will be based off the “Percentile Rank” for a maternal and a terminal Dollar Value Index in each breed. The indexes used, for respective breeds, are: Angus-$Wean ($W), $Beef ($B); Simmental-All Purpose Index (API), Terminal Index (TI); Hereford-Baldy Maternal Index (BMI), Certified Hereford Beef index (CHB). “These indexes are the most reliable predictor of improving profit if calves are marketed at weaning or as fed cattle,” Meteer said. “The use of Dollar Value Indexes is a step in the right direction toward helping a producer select cattle that have a true positive impact on the bottom line” he added. With a significant increase in cattle movement in recent years due to drought, diseases such as trichomoniasis, which has traditionally been localized to the western regions of the United States, have expanded to many parts of the country. As a result some states have implemented rules that require testing certain aged bulls before they are allowed entry. All bulls over 24 months of age and bulls that have been exposed to other cows will be required to be tested for trichomoniasis. Virgin bulls under 24 months of age will need a certificate or written statement endorsed by the bull owner indicating he has not been exposed, Meteer said. Other health requirements remaining the same as those in previous sale years

include the testing of all bulls for bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) using the persistently infected (PI) ear notch screening system. Johne’s testing must occur on the bull’s dam or recipient dam or the bull must come from a herd that is Level 1 or higher for the Voluntary Johne’s Certification Program. All breeding soundness exams must be conducted by a veterinarian. Bulls of all breeds and composite bulls will again be required to be free of all genetic recessive traits. They will need to be from non-carrier ancestors and thus “clean by pedigree” or be tested free of genetic recessive traits. Age divisions will remain the same as in the previous sale, with December 2012 bulls included in the yearlings. The weight per day of age (WDA) for the fall December bulls will be 2.9 pounds per day, whereas the January through March yearlings will need to meet the WDA of 3.0 pounds per day. The remaining junior (July through November 2012) and senior bulls (January through June 2012) will be combined and sold together. Senior bulls will need to meet a 2.3 pounds-per-day WDA while the junior bulls will need to meet 2.6 pounds per day for July through September and 2.8 pounds per day for October and November. Angus breeders will have two options regarding meeting the carcass data requirement. The first is to have ultrasound body composition images taken by field technicians certified by the Ultrasound Guidelines Council (UCG), with images processed through the American Angus Association prior to arriving at the 2014 sale. The second option is to use DNA marker analysis for the carcass traits available through Igenity or Pfizer. “Breeders must make sure the DNA analysis is sent in sufficient time so the results are processed through the American Angus Association and results in an improved accuracy for the traits prior to the sale,” Meteer said. Breeders will be eligible to sell 8 bulls in the 2014 sale, with two not requiring a nomination fee. However, consignors selling more than six bulls will be required to index above the average for their breed at cataloging. Also, first-time consignors are limited to nominating two bulls. Nomination deadline and fees are three-tiered with the following dates and costs: Nov. 15, $75; Dec. 1, $100; and Dec. 15, $125. A copy of the rules and regulations and nomination form along with the past sale information is posted online at www.iptbullsale.com. The rules and regulation information can also be obtained by contacting Meteer at 217823-1340 or wmeteer2@illinois.edu.

National Western Stock Show Launches Heifer Mart

New marketing opportunity for cattle producers during the annual event. Angus cattle producers can now participate in a new marketing opportunity for purebred cattle during the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo., January 11-26, 2014. Cattlemen can enter groups of three to five head of either heifer calves or bred yearlings into the NWSS Heifer Mart. Entries are due by Dec. 1, 2013. Fees are $100 per head and are due at the time of entry. Pedigree, breeding and other pertinent information will also be due at the time of entry. These females are on display with the intention of selling them by private treaty or for breeders to have an opportunity to display their breeding program as part of their overall marketing program. The Heifer Mart provides the forum for displaying a breeders program, as well as the opportunity for buyers to view and purchase groups of cattle from breeders they may not have had the chance to personally visit in the past. There will not be a show associated with these cattle. Similar to the NWSS Herd Sire displays, reservations for a spot in the Heifer Mart will be on a first-come first-serve basis. The Heifer Mart will accommodate cattle by breed during the same time periods that each respective breed arrives and is released from the Yards. These schedules can either be found in the Premium Book or online at www.nationalwestern.com in the Livestock section of the webpage. Exhibitors will be responsible for their own bedding and it must be purchased through the NWSS Feed and Bedding Supply office in the Yards. For more information, please contact the NWSS livestock office at 303-2995559.
