Angus Seeks Applicants for the Next Junior Breed Ambassador Submit an application by June 15 to be considered for this distinct position. Angus cattle play a role in every aspect of Lauren Adcock’s life. From the farm to the showring, and the classroom and into the working world, the Moweaqua, Ill., native is a prime example of how National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members are using their talents to promote the breed. And, this year more than ever, the Angus business is the center of her attention. Adcock is the first-ever Angus Ambassador and has travelled across the country in the past year representing the Angus breed at major beef industry conferences. “It is a year of unforgettable experiences,” Adcock says. “I gained a wealth of knowledge from an industry and personal standpoint; information I could not have learned in a classroom.” Her year of travel allowed her to step out of her comfort zone, especially when mingling with Angus members twice her age. Read more about Adcock’s

10 illinoisnews@bingmanpub.com ~ APRIL 2013

experience as the Angus Ambassador in this article published in the Angus Journal. “The Ambassador program is designed to allow our young Angus leaders a chance to get involved early in higher levels of the cattle business,” says Robin Ruff, American Angus Association®’s director of junior activities. “This is a great opportunity for youth to get their foot in the door and create a network in the industry they are passionate about.” Selecting the next Angus Ambassador On July 25, the Association will select a new Angus Ambassador to serve for a one-year term. During that time, the Ambassador will travel to the Association headquaters for an orientation in Saint Joseph, Mo.; the National Angus Conference and Tour in New York; a Certified Angus Beef® Building Blocks Seminar in Wooster, Ohio; the

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattle Industry Annual Convention in Nashville, Tenn.; the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Research Symposium and Convention; and the Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders Conference in Canada. Additonal travel options vary on the selected ambassador’s location, schedule and availability. Ambassador applicants must be American Angus Association members, ages 17-20 as of Jan. 1, of good standing and who own purebred cattle. To apply, send a cover letter, resume and two essay responses. More information on the application process can be found online. All applications must be postmarked by June 15 and sent to the Association’s Junior Activities Department, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506.

American Angus Association Relocates 2014 Annual Meeting Plans move forward to host the annual event in Kansas City, Mo.

The American Angus Association® is pleased to announce that its 2014 Annual Meeting will be a stand-alone event in Kansas City. The number of cattlemen who rely on Angus genetics continues to grow, year after year. And with that, so does interest in Association programs and services. “We believe hosting the 2014 Annual Meeting in Kansas City will give us a chance to reach out to new areas of our membership and provide them with the education they need to be profitable in the cattle business,” says Bryce Schumann, Association chief executive officer. The Association Board of Directors voted during its February 2013 meeting to begin planning for the Angus event in Kansas City. Tentative dates are set for Nov. 5, 2014, to Nov. 7, 2014, at the KCI Exposition Center – just 30 minutes from the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. “Our main focus is to offer educational, business and social opportunities to our members and other users of Angus genetics,” Schumann says. “We are developing an event that will truly stand out in the industry and serve all attendees well.”

Preliminary event planning includes educational seminars and workshops, keynote speakers, and sessions to conduct Association business. Also being discussed is an extensive trade show featuring allied industry partners. The Angus breed has held its Annual Meeting of Delegates in Louisville, Ky., since 1975. While the event has benefitted by being held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), the Association deems a change is appropriate for 2014. Angus will continue many current traditions, such as the awards banquet and receptions. “By conducting the Annual Meeting in a more central location, we hope more Angus breeders will be able to make the trip and celebrate the business breed with us,” says Shelia Stannard, Association director of activities and events. Angus events remain unchanged for 2013 and are scheduled for Nov. 16 – 19, along with NAILE livestock competitions. More information regarding the 2014 Angus Annual Meeting will be posted on the Association website as it is available.

Angus Foundation’s 13th Annual Golf Tournament Scheduled for July 7 The 13th Annual Angus Foundation Golf Tournament, which will be hosted at the Shiloh Springs Golf Club in Platte City, Mo., just a short drive north of Kansas City, will be held July 7, 2013. The golf tournament will take place in conjunction with the 2013 National Junior Angus Show. “We welcome Angus breeders, youth, as well as our industry friends, to join us by participating in this always fun fundraising activity as a player or as a sponsor,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “This outright cash support as a player or as a sponsor will help advance funding levels for education, youth and research programs, which we all benefit from as members and friends of the American Angus Association®.” The 2013 event sponsor is Turner Meadow Ranch, Wills Point, Texas. Mark and Cindy Ahearn of Turner Meadow Ranch purchased the event sponsorship at the Angus Foundation fundraising event, “Angus Night on the Mountain II,” hosted at Spruce Mountain Ranch, Larkspur, Colo., in January. There are eight additional sponsorship levels for individuals, farms and ranches to consider. Each level contains various promotional opportunities, which include but are not limited to recognition in the tournament program, post-event news release, Angus Journal® and the Angus Foundation’s website, annual report and newsletter. These sponsor levels include: luncheon, beverage/player cart, club house, hole-inone, gift, tee box, hole and flag. Sponsorship deadline is May 31. If you are interested in joining as a player in the tournament, registration is open until June 24. Adult golfer registration is $100 per player, and National Junior Angus Association member registration is $75 per player. After June 24, a $10 late fee per player applies. More information about the annual golf tournament, as well as the event schedule, can be found at www.angusfoundation.org.

Indianapolis to Host the 2014 National Junior Angus Show

The Indiana Junior Angus Association begins planning for the annual event. Indianapolis, Ind., will be welcoming junior Angus members and families from across the nation in 2014 as it hosts the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). The week-long event is set for July 6 – 12, 2014. Besides cattle shows, the week encompasses a variety of other junior activities. “We are proud to be hosting the 2014 National Junior Angus Show in Indy,” says Kathy Wilson, NJAS co-chair. “Indiana has a rich heritage in the Angus business, and we look forward to planning an outstanding NJAS for our Angus juniors.” Sponsored by the Indiana Junior Angus Association, the NJAS is themed “Angus in the Heartland – You gotta love it!” Indiana has hosted the show as recently as 2006 and is excited to make this event a fun-filled and educational week for junior Angus enthusiasts and their families. More than 1,000 head of cattle are expected to compete in Indianapolis. The classes offered will provide opportunities for juniors to exhibit their owned heifers, bred-and-owned heifers, cow-calf pairs, steers, and bred-and-owned bulls. Additional events will include the National Showmanship Contest, NJAS Carcass Steer Contest, Cook-off Contests, and educational contests that include: prepared and extemporaneous public speaking, career development, graphic design, writing, photography, livestock judging, and video and poster competitions. More details on the 2014 NJAS will be released as they become available. This July, the NJAS is being held in Kansas City, Mo. Read more about the upcoming event online. More information regarding the NJAS program can be accessed at www.angus. org/njaa.

WIU Performance Tested Bull Sale Enters Fifth Decade Posts Record Individual Animal Sales

The 41st annual Western Illinois University Performance Bull Sale posted new records for individual animal sale price. Lot 53 a purebred Gelbvieh, consigned by Fecht Gelbvieh of Carthage, sold for $7,000 and Lot 2, the top-indexing and top-selling composite Simmental-Angus, from Bill Washburn of Olney, brought $6,000. Both were new records for individual animals. Forty-four buyers from Illinois, Missouri and Iowa took home 60 high-quality, high-performance bulls for an average price of $2,781. The top 20 bulls averaged $4,153. Repeat buyers again accounted for a high percentage of the buyers, gross dollars, and bulls selling; attesting to the success cow men and women are achieving with bulls out of this sale. The tenth Merial SureHealth bull sale was held at the Western Illinois University Livestock Center in Macomb on March 15. Monte Lowderman of the Lowderman Auction Service, kept the crowd engaged with a lively, fast paced sale. The top indexing bull over all breeds and top indexing Angus, consigned by Bill Wyffels of Geneseo, sold for $4,000. This bull set a record for the all time top marbling ratio bull in any WIU Performance test with an IMF ratio of 211. Top selling Angus was Lot 308, consigned by Tony Griffin of Monroe City, Mo., bringing $4,700. Topping the Simmental consignments at $4,200 was the top indexing Simmental, a son of SVF/NJC Built Right N48, from Rincker Simmentals of Shelbyville. The top-indexing and top-selling Red Angus bringing $3,500 was consigned by Claussen’s Red Angus, Bettendorf, Iowa. Breeders are encouraged to enter their top bull prospects next year as we hope to continue building upon the reputation of the WIU tested bull sale as a source of top quality performance-tested genetics. For more information on entering a bull in the 2013-2014 test, contact the School of Agriculture, Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL 61455 at 309-298-1080. Eastern States Get Ready for a Showdown

The annual Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show takes place June 21 – 23. Make plans to attend the 2013 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show (ERJAS) June 21 -23 in Harrionsburg, Va., at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. Themed “Shenandoah Showdown,” the event will give exhibitors the opportunity to mingle with new and old friends while exhibiting Angus cattle. ERJAS Cattle Shows The weekend event kicks off Friday, June 21, with check-in starting at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. Following opening ceremonies is the showmanship contest, which is sure to be a highlight of opening day with senior, intermediate, junior and pee-wee competitions. The cattle show begins 8 a.m. Saturday, June 22 with the steers. The show continues Saturday with the cow-calf pairs, bred-and-owned bulls and bredand-owned heifers. The show resumes Sunday, June 23 with the owned heifer show. ERJAS Contests and Activities The CornHole Tournament and Tailgate competitions allow exhibitors to enjoy friendly competition outside the showring. The CornHole tournament, or bean-bag toss, will begin 5:30 p.m. Friday with two divisions, adult and junior. A championship round will take place Saturday to conclude the show. The tailgate contest also takes place on Friday and challenges each state to showcase their favorite team or state theme with awards for a best recipe and theme. Saturday events also include the Beef Skillathon and junior social. The skillathon begins at 11 a.m.

and exhibitors can come-and-go as they please. The quiz will ask juniors to identify farm equipment, feed, cuts of meat and beef breeds. Juniors will also get the chance to judge a class of Angus cattle. The barn dance and social begins 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds. ERJAS Community Service Project This year ERJAS participants will help support the Ronald McDonald House Charities through a community service project. Prior to the show, each junior and their family are asked to collect pop tabs to support the Richmond Ronald McDonald House. Adult Chairperson for the ERJAS, Linda Alexander, says that since the Virginia Junior Angus Association took over this service project, the group has donated several feed sacks of tabs each year. “We ask that juniors start collecting pop tabs now, so when June rolls around we can give the best donation yet,” Alexander says. Entry Details Cattle entries must be postmarked by May 15 to the National Junior Angus Association. No late entries are accepted. Junior members who have purchased a heifer that they want to show, should contact the Association at least two weeks prior to the show ownership deadline. Every effort will be made to get the transfer processed in time. Late transfers are never accepted, regardless of the reason. Exhibitors may want to make reservations at nearby hotels, where the Association has room blocks reserved: Country Inn & Suites, 540-433-2400; Holiday Inn Express, 540-433-9999; and the Microtel Inn & Suites, 540-437-3777.
