Here we are several weeks into another new year and the new changes it brings. Each year can bring unpredictable changes in our lives, changes in our careers, changes in our life circumstances, or changes in our health or a loved one’s health. Change is inevitable and unpredictable, but how we face change does not have to be unpredictable.
When changes come our way, we can adjust our mindset to embrace the changes and look for the positives, or we can allow the uncertainty of changes to create an attitude of fear, resistance, or negativity. Our viewpoint sets the tone for how we manage change.
In this issue of Manor Living, you will read articles and see photos of those who have faced life changes with positivity. You will learn about two residents who rekindled a long-ago friendship after both chose to make Magnolia Manor home. You will find out how a resident and her husband faced adversity with a positive perspective and turned a difficult change in their life circumstances into an entrepreneurship opportunity. You will read the story of one of our chaplains who faced retirement with excitement after a long career in education and followed her childhood desire to serve through ministry. You will also read the story of a staff member who faced incredibly difficult circumstances early in life but changed her life by drawing from the lessons her mother taught her as a young child.
Along with these articles, you will read about others who served our residents well and closed their long careers with Magnolia Manor. This magazine also highlights a staff member who was recognized across the state for her service to our residents at Magnolia Manor of Marion County and staff members who spend an extraordinary amount of time every year turning their campus into a Christmas wonderland for our residents and their community. You will see photos of residents celebrating the changing of seasons with fall festivals, Halloween parties, Veterans Day programs, and other holiday celebrations.
Some of the residents featured in our magazine made the choice to move to Magnolia Manor when they were faced with aging concerns. Others had changes in their lives that necessitated them becoming a Magnolia Manor resident. Regardless of how they joined the Magnolia Manor family, they all have one thing in common –the positive mindset with which they chose to face the changes in their lives.
We do not know yet what 2023 holds for each of us. If you or a loved one is facing aging-related concerns or declining health, we invite you to move to Magnolia Manor. If you are looking to fill the void after life changes like retirement or becoming an empty nester, we invite you to become a volunteer. Whatever changes you may be facing, we welcome you to become a part of our family!

way an individual sees the world. Life is what you make it, and it is all about your perspective in each situation. Over the years as a parent, coach, employee, friend, and neighbor, I zoomed in several times with my perspective when I should have stepped back and zoomed out to see the big picture. And there are times when I should have zoomed in to get a closer look instead of standing in the background and not taking action. Your mindset can certainly change like a seesaw, up or down, in or out, depending on your view.
This reminds me of the starfish story. There were tens of thousands of starfish on the beach after a major storm had washed them ashore. A young boy was walking along the sand and throwing them back into the ocean. As an older gentleman approached, he asked the young boy what he was doing.
“I am throwing these starfish back into the water before the sun dries them up and they die,” the young lad responded.
The older man replied, “There are thousands of starfish on this beach. I don’t think you will really make a difference.”
The young boy turned and picked up another starfish, smiled, and said, “It made a difference to that one!”
The experience from these two perspectives was very different. Many times we need to see what a situation looks like from another view. I have heard it said that the greatest self-deception is believing that your own opinion is the only one that matters. God tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” I am so thankful for many things, especially a God who sees everything.
Gratitude helps change our perspective as it shifts our mind’s focus and gives us a heart that is open to others. It isn’t happy people who are grateful; it is grateful people who are happy. It is your choice… your perspective.
As 2022 has ended and we begin a new start in 2023, I would like to thank each of our supporters. Your prayers, time, and financial help all make a world of difference to us just like that little boy did for that one starfish. Please continue assisting us in our ministry during 2023.

MISSION
We serve all through love and support for a lifetime
At Magnolia Manor, we take a holistic approach to senior living care centered on our mission to serve through love and support for a lifetime. One way we achieve this method of care is through social interaction. Each campus offers a variety of entertaining activities daily. We also hold special events and holidaythemed parties throughout the year. Through the activities and programs that we provide at Magnolia Manor, residents can build lasting friendships. Sometimes, they may even rekindle some old friendships like two of our residents at the Macon campus - Barbara Marshall and Jackie Wilcher.
Barbara and Jackie’s friendship began at Lynmore Methodist Church in south Macon. Jackie and her husband Jack had just moved to the area with their son, Jay, and their newborn twin sons, Robin and Jon. As a kind gesture of hospitality, members of the Lynmore Methodist Sunday School class partnered together to gift the Wilchers with a double stroller for the twins. Barbara happened to be a part of that Sunday School class. Jackie and Barbara became acquaintances, which quickly grew into a close friendship when Jackie joined the choir.
“We were always being told to be quiet during choir rehearsals. We would try to behave ourselves a little bit every once in a while,” Barbara laughingly reminisced.
“Yes, we had a better time during practice. But during the service, we had to behave. We really enjoyed the choir,” shared Jackie.
Their days at Lynmore Methodist Church were filled with many happy, fun memories. While they spent a lot of time laughing with each other and other choir members, they made sure they were prepared for worship services on Sunday. Jackie remembers they had many great pianists and choir directors. Their choir even reached 25 members at one point.
After nearly 20 years, their days together at Lynmore Methodist came to an end. Barbara and her family moved to the other side of town, which meant they would no longer attend church services at Lynmore Methodist Church. Distance and different life events made it so that Barbara and Jackie saw less and less of each other. A chance run-in would occur from time to time, but they eventually lost all contact. For the span of 20 years, Barbara

and Jackie’s friendship had become merely a good memory. But thanks to the campus-wide Hawaiian Luau event, their old friendship was revived.
Barbara recalls that she had just finished playing a few rounds of cornhole at the Hawaiian Luau with some employees. She had worked up a thirst and needed a refreshing drink. They pointed her to the refreshment stand. As Barbara chatted with the staff members who were serving refreshments, Jackie joined the line to get a drink to go with her barbecue sandwich. To her surprise, she was met by a familiar voice.
“I heard her voice, and I stopped. I said, ‘Barbara! Is that you?’” Jackie recounted.
Jackie was wearing a hat and sunglasses, so Barabara didn’t recognize her initially. But when she did, the two were a sight to behold.
“I just couldn’t believe it was Jackie! That was the first time we had seen each other in over 20 years,” Barbara shared.
The two hugged and began exchanging stories of times past. They also shared a few life updates. Some of our employees had the privilege of experiencing their joyous reunion.
“It was amazing to witness how important these gatherings can be! After years of being disconnected, these two ladies were so delighted to reconnect. That connection was facilitated through the planning, efforts, and hard work of our staff who made the gathering possible,” stated Macon Campus Chaplain, Nancylee Cater.
Now that Barbara and Jackie are reunited, they have plans to spend more time together and catch up. A lot has happened in the twenty years that they’ve been out of touch. Barbara’s son has three children, and her daughter has three children. Between their children, Barbara has four great-grandchildren. Jackie is a grandmother to four grandchildren and a great-grandmother to three greatgrandchildren. Their families have grown, but unfortunately, they’ve lost a few.

Both Barbara and Jackie are widowed. Losing a loved one is never easy. But being in a closeknit community where they can interact with others provides great comfort. It also helps that the hassles of home maintenance and other household tasks are handled. Whether a resident is in Independent Living or Assisted Living care, we offer services and amenities at Magnolia Manor that make retired living much easier and enjoyable.
“I just moved here in March 2022. My apartment is really nice. I have a very spacious room with enough closet storage to hang up more clothes than I need. It’s very convenient,” stated Jackie. “I came here after I had surgery for a hip replacement. I needed some assistance, so I chose Assisted Living at Magnolia Manor. I like living here.”
As an Independent Living resident, Barbara enjoys her two-bedroom villa complete with a large sunroom. While she really appreciates her
home, her favorite part about Magnolia Manor is the people.
“The staff are some of the best people I’ve ever met. I was at a different senior living community before coming here, and the staff there didn’t care much. But they really care here. My neighbors are amazing as well. During the holidays, we all pitch in to give gifts to those who don’t have any family. They’re so thoughtful,” shared Barbara.
Whether they’re reviving old friendships or building new ones, we aim to provide our residents with the support and resources they need to live meaningful lives at Magnolia Manor. Our team of healthcare professionals, donors, community partners, volunteers, and other friends of the Manor make it possible. Each of you play a part in bringing the Magnolia Manor mission to life, and we appreciate you for that!

VISION
Our communities are about life and living...
Life is filled with many twists and turns. Some are positive experiences that bring joy, while others bring tears of pain. Either way, we must learn to accept the good, the bad, and everything in between. Emilyn Clark, a resident at our St. Simons Island campus, has fully embraced the meaning of living life to the fullest. Through faith, love, and determination she overcomes life’s most challenging obstacles and holds dear to its many joyous moments.
The youngest of four daughters, Emilyn grew up in a close-knit community in Okolona, Mississippi. She and her sisters spent summers at the local recreational park mainly swimming in the pool. They also participated in several school activities throughout the year. Emilyn was an officer in the Girl’s Reserve Club and a staff writer for the high school magazine. She was also the drum major for her school’s marching band and led the Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans for two consecutive years. Thanks to her participation in the band, she was able to meet her husband, Wayne Clark.
“He saw me marching in the band one day and decided to speak to me. We dated for a while and got married in 1949
after I graduated from high school,” Emilyn shared.
The Clarks welcomed their daughter, Resa, to the world and moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Wayne got a job opportunity that led them to South Carolina. They spent a few years there before returning to Tennessee, where their son, Harry, was born. Unfortunately, a tragic accident at work left Wayne without an eye and no way to continue working in his career field. Through faith and determination, the Clarks excelled in the face of adversity. They relocated to a small town in west Tennessee and became entrepreneurs.
“We purchased a grocery store, frozen food locker, processing meat plant, and meat market. Wayne eventually added a car wash and laundry mat. For 20 years, we worked hard side-by-side to keep our businesses running successfully,” explained Emilyn.
Whenever they took time off, they would pack up their motor home and travel around the country. They continued to explore the United States after retiring and selling their businesses. Their travels eventually came to an end when Wayne developed heart

issues. Wayne’s health continued to decline until he passed away in 2010.
“For the last three months of his life, our children and I spent as much time with Wayne as we could. Our daughter even transferred jobs so she could be his hospice nurse. The night he changed his address, we were very comforted knowing that he was with Jesus,” stated Emilyn.
Four months after her husband’s funeral, tragedy struck again. Emilyn received a phone call one night informing her that her son, Harry, was killed in a car accident. Losing two close family members in a short period of time was devastating for Emilyn. But through it all, she held onto her faith.
Emilyn spent another seven years in Tennessee, where she was a very active member in church. She found happiness in participating in different canasta clubs. But maintaining a large home on her own was becoming too taxing. Emilyn knew that the best option was to put her house on the market. After much prayer, the house was finally sold.
“I called my daughter to surprise her with the news. She was in Georgia visiting her daughter. They were shocked and wanted to know where I planned to move. I told them that I might move to Georgia,” Emilyn laughed.

Emilyn recalled that her granddaughter had been trying to get her to move to Georgia for years. She had even researched senior living communities that might be suitable for Emilyn - and Magnolia Manor happened to be one of them. Coincidentally, Emilyn’s grandson was in town visiting her and offered to drive her to tour Magnolia Manor. In March 2017, Emilyn became a resident at Magnolia Manor of St. Simons Island.
“From the moment I stepped foot on the campus, I was impressed. The staff was very friendly and the campus was the right size for me,” stated Emilyn. “I’ve been so content and happy with my choice of moving to Magnolia Manor! The staff is always caring for us and going over and beyond to make sure we’re comfortable. My biggest bonus is that my granddaughter lives five minutes away. And I get to see my greatgranddaughter, little Emilyn. She brings me so much sunshine!”
Life at Magnolia Manor for Emilyn is great. She plays canasta with friends on campus once a week. Every evening they all gather under the breezeway to catch up before dinner. Weekends are for special events like the Jacksonville Symphony. She’s also a regular attendee at the theater and local symphony on the island. Emilyn takes occasional trips outside of the state with friends. In between her busy social schedule, Emilyn makes time for church and family. She sums up her experience in a few words.
“This is my sentiment living at Magnolia Manor: Life sure is good. But most of all, God is good!”
It is an honor to serve the residents of Magnolia Manor. They are the people who inspire us to continue creating a supportive senior living community focused on life and living. Thanks to Emilyn Clark and residents like her, we are reminded each day that life is what we make it. And at Magnolia Manor, we aim to make the best of it!

VALUES
Commitment to our faith tradition
As a faith-based organization, we are excited to enrich the spiritual lives of our residents at Magnolia Manor. This is something we take very seriously. Through the years, we have truly been blessed with some of the best chaplains. Recently, we welcomed Chaplain Jan Masters to the Moultrie campus.
Growing up in rural, southwestern Georgia, Jan attended the local Baptist church. She enjoyed learning about God and the Bible whenever church services were held. She made her profession of faith at the age of 12. As her faith grew, Jan became more interested in ministry.
“At 16, I came forward at the end of an evening service and told my pastor and the congregation that I felt that I was called to be in ministry,” reminisced Jan.
“I thought that my focus would be in music ministry, so I majored in music in college. I studied piano and voice. However, as time passed, I realized my true calling was teaching the word.”
Jan became involved in the church music ministry
as she graduated from college. She participated in choirs, worship bands, and orchestras at the churches she attended over the years. In addition to her ministry, Jan worked in education as a teacher for more than 30 years. She spent most of her career teaching special needs children in public schools in Georgia. She also taught classes at Albany State University. Even though she knew at an early age that she was called into the ministry, it wasn’t until three years ago that she had the opportunity to become a pastor.
She became the Minister of Music and pianist at Beulah United Methodist Church in Sylvester, GA. Shortly after joining the church, she became a lay speaker and began filling in for the pastor when needed. This is when she began using her gift of teaching to help members of the congregation. She was an integral part of the church, beginning an adult prayer group with help from the pastor, which later became known as the Bible Study and Prayer Group.

Jan received the opportunity to serve as a lay person at Beulah and become a certified lay minister. A few months later, she also became the lay minister at Morningside UMC in Albany, GA. She is currently the pastor at both churches. In between serving her congregants, Jan also wanted to get out into the community to serve those in need. So, she decided to explore chaplaincy.
“I have always been interested in chaplaincy, and I began taking C.P.E. courses taught by Rev. Dr. John Walker at Magnolia Manor,” shared Jan. “While in my third course, John gave me an opportunity to serve as a part-time
last year.”
One of the most important parts of being a spiritual leader for Jan is being true to her calling. She also enjoys seeing her congregants grow spiritually in Christ.
“I feel blessed to be able to share the word of God with others. It’s great to hear their feedback when they’ve enjoyed a message or want to learn more. Most importantly, I want to make the Heavenly Father proud of me because I have represented Him well,” smiled Jan.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan makes the drive from her home in Albany to minister to the residents at our Moultrie campus. She teaches residents Bible study two times a day and makes sure to drop by each of their rooms between study groups. She has been thrilled with how sweet all the residents and staff have been to her.
“I loved it from the first time I stepped foot on the campus. Everyone - the staff and the residents - were so friendly and
welcoming,” she shared. “It’s my first time being a chaplain, so the residents helped me further learn what my role is.”
We are looking forward to seeing Jan lead our residents in their spiritual walk with God for many years to come. If you would like to learn more about our chaplaincy program or offer support, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter or visit us at our website at www.magnoliamanor.com

Magnolia Manor of Columbus East Staffing Coordinator, Joyce McGruder
VALUES
Dignity, Respect, Care, and Compassion for All
Many of our staff at Magnolia Manor demonstrate dignity, respect, care, and compassion for all in their work daily. There are a few who far exceed expectations. Allow us to introduce you to Joyce McGruder, the Staffing Coordinator at Magnolia Manor of Columbus East.
Growing up in the rural town of Bainbridge, GA, Joyce recalls that life wasn’t easy. She and her four siblings helped their mother make a living by working long hours in the fields. In between going to school and working, Joyce’s mother made sure they were in church on Sunday.
“My mother had a great influence on my life. She kept us in church and instilled a good work ethic in us. Although we went through a lot and didn’t have much, it helped me grow and become a better person,” explained Joyce.
After graduating from Bainbridge High School, Joyce’s life took a turn for the worst. She made a few bad decisions that left her homeless and stranded in Kentucky. Drawing from what her mother taught her, she relied on her faith.
“I remember telling God that if He helped me get back home to Georgia, I would change my life. I made it back safely, and I’ve been serving God ever since,” Joyce shared. Joyce stayed true to her word and turned her life around. She began working in retail, quickly advancing to a supervisor role. She eventually moved to Columbus with a family member and continued working in retail. One day while at work, a customer told her about a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) job. His wife was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and her employer was offering classes. Joyce wasn’t quite sure if a career in longterm health care was for her, but she took a chance and signed up for the classes. She became a CNA in 2004 and advanced in her career throughout the years.
“I’ve grown a lot at Magnolia Manor since I started in 2007. I’ve been a CNA Team Lead and a CNA Supervisor. Now I’m the Staffing Coordinator. Going from being a CNA to a Staffing Coordinator has allowed me to know when to lead and when to be led. Because I know what it means to be in each position,

17
I can relate to others more easily,” Joyce explained.
As a Staffing Coordinator, Joyce’s duties involve ensuring that the building is fully staffed. On a typical day, you can find her in her office making phone calls or meeting with department heads and team leads in pursuit of filling every position for each shift. Joyce mainly focuses on staffing nurses and CNAs but lends her expertise to all departments. Through her dedication and desire to help others, Joyce goes over and beyond the ordinary tasks in her job description. Her skills proved instrumental during the pandemic and continue to be helpful during the recovery period.
“During the pandemic, Joyce was constantly on the phone with managers making sure she communicated where we were with staffing. She continues to do so now as it fluctuates. She goes beyond her expected hours of working to make sure our residents have staff to care for them. Sometimes she leaves and returns for nights and weekends to ensure that new hires are set or that the unit is covered. Joyce has this smile that makes you know that everything will be fine for the shift ahead,” shared Deanna Campbell, Columbus East Director of Nursing.
The most unique element of Joyce’s work is that she uses people-centered methods
18 Article continued from page 17
Magnolia Manor of Columbus East Staffing Coordinator, Joyce McGruder
that are mutually beneficial for individual employees and the organization as a whole. She arranges schedules with respect to each employee’s needs, remaining open to negotiations. Although Joyce is wellequipped for the task, the job doesn’t come without its obstacles.
“Oftentimes, I get call-outs all hours of the night. I’ll call around to fill the shift. But if no one answers, it can be challenging. Through the years, I’ve learned that you have to work with the staff. You can’t be mean, you have to be understanding. You have to think of resourceful ways to cover the shift. For example, if I need to call someone in to cover a shift, I’ll try to schedule days off that may be more beneficial to them,” explained Joyce.
Joyce plans to continue working with managers to implement new strategies
d esigned to improve staffing at Magnolia Manor. In addition to her role as the Staffing Coordinator, Joyce helps out in the payroll department and works as a CNA from time to time when needed. Outside of her career, she is a wife, a mother of five children, and a grandmother to twelve grandchildren. She is also a minister and dedicates her time to helping within the community.
We are privileged to have employees like Joyce McGruder who go beyond their standard job descriptions to ensure that residents at Magnolia Manor receive high-quality care. With their help, we can continue being the community of life and living that we strive to be! VALUES Integrity Through Excellence
Serving others with integrity through excellence is one of our core values at Magnolia Manor. Our staff members all have one thing in common, the love of helping others. This common trait is what motivates Magnolia Manor employees to excel at serving seniors. Jane House, the former Administrator at the Retirement Center in Americus, GA, embodies this mantra of serving others.
Jane joined the Magnolia Manor staff on June 5th, 2005, in the Admissions Department of the Americus Retirement Center. She knew about Magnolia Manor from family and friends who were residents here. Three months after she joined Magnolia Manor, the Administrator position became available. The Senior VP of Operations, Hill Fort, asked Jane to take on this new role. Thankfully, she accepted the position where she continued to work until December 2022.
“Jane House has been a dedicated servant leader and an integral part of the Magnolia Manor ministry for close to 18 years. We are grateful for her
commitment to the residents and staff throughout the years. Most importantly, we are grateful for her friendship,” stated Hill Fort.
It is safe to say that the feeling is mutual. Jane notes that she will dearly miss the many wonderful people who have touched her life through Magnolia Manor.
“I have had a lot of impactful memories with the residents. Their life stories are priceless. Many of them have survived health issues, the loss of loved ones, and the changes in the world. But they remain positive through it all. That’s powerful! The most valuable lesson they taught me was how to be resilient and grateful,” Jane shared.
In her time at Magnolia Manor, Jane has gained experience and knowledge in long-term care that she gladly shares with others. She credits the supportive and encouraging environment that Magnolia Manor provides employees for the growth and success that she has seen in her career. In

addition to moral support, Magnolia Manor offers developmental growth opportunities for employees to advance their careers if they desire to. By providing growth opportunities, we hope to inspire employees to step out of their comfort zones and improve their skills, so they can confidently provide better care to the residents.
“The best advice I can give anyone in longterm care is to identify within themselves if they have the heart to care for someone. One of the key factors in this field of work is providing person-centered care. That means you have to know how to provide heart-felt care. That’s not easy to learn, so it’s great if
you have it naturally,” explained Jane.
Even though Jane has retired, her mission to care for others will continue. She plans to make the most of her extra time by volunteering in the community, helping more at church, and spending time with friends and family. Being active and healthy is important to her, so she also has plans to hit the tennis courts to improve her game. On behalf of the Magnolia Manor family, we would like to wish you a wonderful retirement, Jane House! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the residents and staff at Magnolia Manor.

Americus Nursing Center Activity Director, Margaret Rushing, instructing a resident on the iN2L system
VALUES
Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit
At Magnolia Manor, we are committed to using the most cutting-edge technology and methods that promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit for each of our residents. In June 2022, we received the opportunity to use a new type of broad-scope interactive technology which gives residents at our skilled nursing facilities in Americus and Buena Vista the chance to test their skills in trivia, chat about their own experiences, watch videos, or even play bingo! This new technology is known as, It’s Never Too Late (iN2L), and it has become a great tool for our skilled nursing residents.
Our Senior Vice President of Operations, Hill Fort, was very instrumental in helping us obtain the iN2L technology. Hill noticed the machines at a conference that he was attending. Impressed by the technology, he submitted paperwork for two state grants provided by the manufacturer. Two of our skilled nursing facilities, one in Americus and the other in Buena Vista, are using the system while giving feedback to the company to
help them improve their design.
When the machines arrived, staff organized group gatherings twice a day to help residents get acclimated. At first, only 10 to 12 people would attend, but now 30 to 35 people get together to learn.
According to Maggie Rushing, Activities Director at the Americus Nursing Center, some residents have even started attending both sessions.
The iN2L technology system is a touchscreen-based content platform that is designed for seniors who may have limited physical movement or cognitive impairment. This system may be used by individuals or in group activities. The 75” touchscreen is mounted onto a rolling cart so it can be moved from one group to another. The large format makes it easier for seniors to use, which allows them both physical movement and some stretching. There is also a smaller mobile device that staff may take from room to room. The product is designed to be adjustable so that residents may use it from a sitting, prone, or standing position.
Article continued on page 26
25
Content is customizable for individuals as well as large groups. This gives residents the opportunity to learn new things, play games for entertainment, or test their skills in a trivia contest. Our residents get the most enjoyment from the musical features. They sing along with musicians who play songs they grew up listening to. The iN2L also provides residents with their own personal portal to log into. This allows our residents to have interactions with their family members. Families can also send old photos or videos to share with their loved ones. Because each portal is different, residents can add games, music, and TV shows that fit their preferences.
One gentleman who was once a pilot can jump into the cockpit of an airplane and take control of the stick through simulated flight sessions on the iN2L system. Although he now has limited mobility, he can relive his days of racing through the skies thanks to the iN2L technology.
Others are taking bike rides along scenic vistas anywhere they like. They can choose their own route through the countryside. Pedaling along with a bicycle which happens to be plugged into the flatscreen monitor provides great low-impact exercise and fun entertainment. For those residents with limited mobility, a special adapter allows

them to pedal with their hands. The iN2L provides each resident with a sense of freedom and independence.
“We can’t go out and experience everything for ourselves in person, but we can explore the world with iN2L,” stated Maggie.
The staff has reported the technology is very user-friendly. It allows them the opportunity to provide interesting activities that the residents will connect with. Seeing what content the residents choose for their portal allows our staff to become more familiar with their backgrounds and personal interests, taking activities for skilled nursing residents at Magnolia Manor to the next level.
“I originally thought that the iN2L technology was going to be a really good tool. Now that we have them in place, I’m grateful for what it has done for the staff and the residents. It has boosted our activities tremendously, getting our residents more active in creative ways. It’s been awesome!” stated Hill Fort, Senior Vice President for Operations & COO.

VALUES
Creative change and constant improvement
One of our core values at Magnolia Manor is to orchestrate creative change and constant improvement in our care to residents each day. Our team of skilled professionals helps us stay true to this standard by creating a supportive environment for residents to thrive in and by inspiring other staff members to put forth their best. Tina Gray, the Activity Director at Magnolia Manor of Marion County, is an outstanding example of our values in action. We are proud to announce that Tina received the Georgia Health Care Association (GHCA) Activity Professional of the Year Award!
To receive this national recognition, recipients must demonstrate dependability, dedication, and compassion in their work. Sound candidates must also be active members of the Georgia Society of Activity Professionals (GSAP). Tina has exemplified professionalism at Magnolia Manor and as the President of the West Central Council of the GSAP. As a result, she was granted the Activity Professional of the Year Award at the 2022 GHCA Quality Summit.
“Winning Activity Professional of the Year is such a great honor and surprise! I had no idea I was nominated until they called my name. To receive an award for something you love to do is amazing! I do it for the residents, and it’s a blessing to be a part of their lives. I thank God, my administrator, and anyone who nominated me for the award,” stated Tina.
In addition to her contributions to the GSAP, Tina has been instrumental in advocating for residents at Magnolia Manor of Marion County to enhance their quality of life. A major factor of her responsibilities consists of supporting physical and social health. Tina holds a variety of exercise classes and is primarily involved in the restorative nursing program. Utilizing interactive technology equipment known as the “It’s Never 2 Late” (iN2L) program and daily exercise classes, Tina provides unique ways for residents to remain physically fit. She also incorporates music, movies, games, and other stimulating activities that interest the residents.
“I am so excited that Tina was selected as Activity Professional of the Year. She is so deserving of this award. She arrives to work early each day and puts the residents first. She goes beyond the call of duty to assist the team in other areas. She is the most hard-working, dedicated Activity Professional you’ll ever meet, and Magnolia Manor of Marion County is blessed to have her,” stated Magnolia Manor of Marion County Administrator, Angela Watkins, R.N.
We appreciate Tina Gray and her commitment to helping others at Magnolia Manor! Thanks to Tina and other commendable staff like her, we can continue growing and providing high-quality care to our residents.
Magnolia Manor of Marion County Activity Director, Tina Gray

CREATIVE CORNER
Once the last helping of Thanksgiving dinner is served, creative minds at Magnolia Manor of St. Simons Island begin working away. Sparks of inspiration come to life to create the magical scene of holiday cheer known as St. Simons Island Light the Night. But before any exhibits can go on display, a series of plans must be put in place to prepare for the big opening night. This is where the masterminds behind the lights shine. Although they would rather stay out of the spotlight, allow us to introduce you to Jackie Newman (Independent and Assisted Living Administrator), Penny Lynch (Maintenance Director), and Gerry Mize (Activity Director).
The St. Simons Island Light the Night event began in 2007 with only a few modest Christmas decorations. As time went on, Jackie, Penny, and Gerry put their heads together to come up with new displays. The 2022 Light the Night event was their 15th year, and they’ve grown far beyond their humble beginnings. In today’s Light the Night event, thousands of lights line each building and much of the greenery on campus. An
array of custom-made displays adorn several of the lawns. On opening night, onlookers can fill their bellies with refreshments and their hearts with joy at the Christmas concert or when participating in activities. What does it take to put together such an event?
Well, first these visionaries come up with ideas. Penny is charged with cutting out plywood, organizing the lights, and sorting out the electrical systems. Each of them creatively paints the decorations and designs handmade displays. Once the creative portion is complete, it’s time to set everything up! Thankfully, the trio doesn’t have to handle this part alone.
According to Gerry, “When we put up the decorations, it’s all hands on deck! Every available staff member puts in timeincluding some volunteers from the home office in Americus.”
The process starts well before Christmas and continues even after opening night. Since the lights stay up for the entire month of December, staff must maintain the upkeep of each display. Although a lot of effort goes into bringing the event to

life, it has proven to be worth it.
“We see the event’s impact, not only on opening night, but also through the month as cars, buses, and trollies come in to see the display. Light the Night has become the go-to place for families who want to see Christmas lights. Some even come back several times! It spreads goodwill in the community, and we enjoy it,” shared Gerry.
At this past Light the Night event, we were privileged to have performances from the St. Simons Island Elementary School Chorus, Frederica Academy Ensemble, and the singing duo known as Sass and Brass. We also had several volunteers from the Pirates of the Spanish Main. Volunteers and staff from the Dietary Department served hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies. Santa joined us, generously lending a knee and listening ear to children (and even some adults)
eager to share their Christmas wishes with him. Children could also get their faces painted, a newly introduced activity at Light the Night.
Through the years, Light the Night has grown to be more than just a display of Christmas lights.
The lights are a beautiful sight, but none compare to the way a child’s face lights up when they experience this event. It’s also a great, fun way to bring the community together to build memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to this event each year and leave anticipating the next. Many of us also wonder what Jackie, Penny, and Gerry will plan for next year.
Gerry’s answer, “Who knows, we are always thinking of new ideas and ways to re-create what we have on hand. I guess we will have to wait until the first Tuesday in December 2023 to see!”

RETIREE
After 39 years of serving in various roles at Magnolia Manor, Kitty Battle has now retired at the Americus Retirement Center. Kitty joined our Magnolia Manor Family in 1983 and has always demonstrated our mission to serve through love and support for a lifetime. She started out in the Housekeeping department, and eventually transferred to Dietary. She later became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), where she provided exceptional care to residents and support to her team.
“Through the years, I’ve learned so much in the nursing department and other departments. Each role helped me grow as a leader. I’ve also developed so many special memories with the residents and staff. I love each of the residents and I’m going to miss them,” stated Kitty.
Now that she has retired, Kitty plans to catch up on quality time with her husband, three children, and ten grandchildren. In between spending time with family, she will delve more into her favorite hobbies of exercise and line dancing.
We’re certainly going to miss you Kitty Battle, but we wish you the best in your retirement!
