Since our last edition of this magazine, Hurricane Michael missed the Georgia coast and affected our inland campuses, destroying crops, damaging trees, downing powerlines, and knocking out electricity to about 400,000 people across the state. Three hurricanes in three years have affected Magnolia Manor. We’re tired of hurricanes.

After Matthew and Irma in 2016 and 2017 left us without power for days, we decided to make sure every campus had emergency generators. Thanks to generous sponsors, donors and our 2018 fundraising events, we raised about half of the money needed and began installation. It proved to be a wise decision. These generators allowed us to shelter in place during Michael and still provide for the basic needs of our residents. Our Americus campus was hardest hit, and some of our buildings did not have power restored for four days. In spite of the inconvenience, everyone seemed to take things in stride. As the storm roared through, residents gathered in the hallways. Some sang, and others prayed and read Scripture. Everyone remained calm. Before, during and after the storm, our staff did an incredible job. Many left their own homes and families to make sure our residents received the care they needed. They worked long hours with little sleep in order to care for others. Even when they learned a tree had fallen on their home, they still reported for work. After almost thirty-five years here, I am still humbled by their commitment to those we serve. Magnolia Manor is a special place because of the special people who live and work here. Our staff understand Servant Leadership and model it regularly. We invite you to experience it for yourself. Let’s just hope it’s not during another hurricane!

New. As a kid, that word could either be good or bad. It could be a new toy. That was good. It could mean new shoes. That could be either good or bad, depending on how many sizes too big they were because we couldn’t afford to buy new shoes too often. Then there are times when it could be both good AND bad. Take going to a new school, for instance. If I hadn’t gone to that new school in the sixth grade and had Miss Francis Gregory as a teacher, I’m certain my life would have turned out very differently. I was behind grade level when I first met her. By the time I left her classroom, I was scoring senior high and college age aptitude in the standardized tests. She saw something in me others did not. But the new school was also bad because I stood out like a sore thumb. I didn’t have the cool clothes other kids did. Mine came from the Sears and Roebuck catalog, not the local department store. They were the unwashed denim jeans that were two sizes too big so I could “grow into them.” Then there were the bright blue, green and mustard colored pants that didn’t sell until mom got three pairs for the price of one. There was a reason no one had bought them. Even on sale, she paid too much! Then there’s the New Year. We anticipate the good. We hope for the best and celebrate it before it even happens. It’s filled with joy. We don’t generally look for the bad. We need hope. We crave it. And even when we look back at the prior year, we thank God the bad is behind us. We remember the incredible blessings we enjoyed alongside the sadness and soon forget all about the bad. Magnolia Manor had so many incredible blessings last year. We completed renovations to the Americus Retirement Center. Our new Mattie H. Marshall building opened and met with high praise. Our Marion County facility in Buena Vista got a major facelift and expanded into rehab and memory care services. We installed emergency generators just in time for another hurricane to strike our western campuses, and no one was hurt! It was a VERY good year! Now, here we are on the cusp of 2019. Renovations have begun on our Americus Nursing Center and will continue for about thirty-two months. When it’s finished, you won’t even recognize the place! Our campuses are pursuing excellence like never before so we can offer better care for our residents. For the past year, our board has been looking strategically to the future, and they will make important decisions this year. Who knows what else lies ahead as 2019 grows to maturity. I can assure you, though, there will be much more good than bad. So, in the words of Paul,

My friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. --Philippians 4:8, Good News Version

MISSION

We serve through love and support for a lifetime Our mission to serve with love and support for a lifetime is clearly evident in the actions of Magnolia Manor staff. It’s hard to describe adequately the depth of love they have for those residents who have entrusted us with their care. Allow us to share one example of that love submitted by Moultrie Administrator Teresa Newell: Mr. and Mrs. Carl T. Duren, Jr. (Marcia) moved into Magnolia Manor January 12, 2018. Carl was a retired Principal from Cook County Elementary School. He had spent his entire career in that school system and was loved and very much appreciated by his colleagues, teachers, and students. He spent his retirement years in several positions with the Hasan Shrine Temple in Albany, Georgia. He would have become Potentate of the Temple in 2003, but a 2002 stroke left him without the ability to speak or use his right arm. For 16 years, his loving wife took care of him until she was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer metastasizing to her hip. I remember the day so vividly when their family toured our community. The Duren’s two children, Carl T. Duren III (Trey) and Anna Barbara

Duren Hanks, were searching for a place for their parents to call home. I remember Trey stating he wanted his mother to be able to rest and enjoy herself. Mrs. Marcia was a dedicated wife and mother. Before moving into the Manor, she spent her days taking care of her husband. It’s been said she even spoiled him a little…….well, a lot. She was always prepared to help him, no matter how tired she may be. Once they moved into the Manor, she became very sick from the Chemo treatment. She knew exactly what Mr. Carl wanted even though it was hard for staff to decipher. She knew what his short phrases meant and acted accordingly. The love they had for each other was evident through her actions. Shortly thereafter, she and her family decided Hospice was the direction she needed to go. On February 23, 2018 Ms. Marcia passed away with her family by her side. Mr. Carl was heart-broken. The love of his life prepared the path for him to be in a loving, caring, home-like place to carry out the remainder of his life after she passed. What a blessing! We remind Mr. Carl frequently of her love shining down upon him when he’s involved in certain activities. After she passed, at first I was afraid Article continued on page 17

VISION

Our communities are about life and living When you’ve given your heart and soul to something you believe in for close to 30 years, you aren’t going to let a little setback stop you from continuing to do it. Magnolia Manor of Americus residents Reverend Ray and Juanita Wilder did have reason for concern this year. But anyone who knows them (and a lot of people know them), knows it would take a lot to keep them from raising money for The League of the Good Samaritan. They are champions for this charitable arm of Magnolia Manor. The fact that they’ve raised over $300,000 in the time they have been part of our community is proof. The Wilders are true servants of Christ, and Magnolia Manor is their mission field. The Wilders first heard of The League of the Good Samaritan when Ray was still serving as a pastor in the United Methodist church. They received informational inserts for the bulletins and received a special offering on League Days, so they became keenly aware of the importance of the benevolent fund. Ray’s mother was also a Magnolia Manor resident. Even though she was not a recipient of League funds, the Wilders knew that other residents in need were getting help. “We were very impressed that nobody was put out due to their inability to pay,” says Ray. The seed was planted.

In 1991, The Wilders moved to Magnolia Manor after Ray started losing his sight and had to leave the pulpit due to his disability. How Ray and Juanita handled the situation is a clear testament of their desire to serve God through any means possible. “I had to take disability early,” he explains. “I knew I had to keep doing the Lord’s work in some way outside the pastorate.” Together with Juanita, they prayed about ministering right where they were. “We told the Lord when we moved here that this would be our mission field,” shares Juanita, “to help others at Magnolia Manor.” Shortly after settling in, Ray and Juanita asked if they could raise money for new dining room furniture in the retirement center, followed by a lobby fundraiser. They sent out letters, raised awareness, and quickly raised what was needed. According to Juanita, “It was not hard at all to get the money!” As they spread the good news about the Manor and the League to the community and their church, people started donating items. With more and more donated items coming in, things grew to the point where Juanita was having a yard sale a few times a month for residents, staff, and the Americus community. She’s never been shy about sharing the importance of the League and asking people to give or volunteer, especially every year Article continued on page 8

for the 5K and Love Walk, a fundraiser that specifically raises League funds. “I am very grateful for the many volunteers who have helped throughout the years,” she shares. “They all were an integral part of helping me raise money.” There have been lots of acknowledgements and awards along the way for the Wilders to recognize the generous work they do. One touching recognition came last fall when the annual love walk was renamed the ‘Wilder Walk.’ Year after year, the amount of money raised continued to go up. In the fall of 2017, Ray and Juanita successfully raised $10,000 just for the 5K. They were on track in 2018 once again to break their own record when a tumble took them off course. A month before the run, as the two were returning from church, Juanita took a fall; Ray right behind her. Juanita suffered a broken ankle which required surgery, leading to an unexpected move to personal care for both of them. Make no mistake, Ray and Juanita love Magnolia Manor and fully expected to make the move from their independent living home eventually. But because Ray relies on Juanita due to his disability,

8

the move became an immediate necessity. What’s so amazing is that in the midst of all the difficulty of quickly having to clear out of their beloved house, move, and try to remain still in a wheelchair, Juanita’s thoughts turned again to the League. “I was so afraid we couldn’t do anything this year to raise money for the 5K,” she shares. “Ray and I prayed about it and decided we can still send letters!” Their efforts brought in $8,000. It was for that very reason, the Wilder Walk will forever be in honor of Ray and Juanita. It was an especially sweet surprise for them because of the struggles leading up to this years’ event. The recognition left them shocked and at a loss for words. “I’ve never seen Ray Wilder speechless!!” laughed Juanita. “Yeah…can you imagine a preacher being speechless?” added Ray. “My eyes were tear-filled!” What’s ahead for these two dedicated servants and number one fans of Magnolia Manor? Ray sums it up. “A Christian should never retire,” he says. “As long as you are able and have breath, do something for the Lord!” Thank you both for your love and service to Magnolia Manor and for serving as an example for others.

Chaplains are the men and women who dedicate their lives to stand on the frontlines of spiritual care. They often serve others during matters of life and death, guiding the residents and their families through the journeys of aging and spiritual growth. Under the leadership of Senior Chaplain John Walker, our chaplaincy program continues to thrive and grow. We recently added a few new chaplains to the Magnolia Manor family. Allow us to introduce them. Martin T. Dillon is from Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1990, he enlisted in the United States Army, dedicating twenty years of service to our country before retiring in 2010. Soon after that, he was called into ministry. He answered the call and began ministering at New Hope Baptist Church. In May 2017, he earned his Master of Divinity from Luther Rice College and Seminary. Since then, he has served as a bi-vocational pastor and hospice chaplain. Now, he is the chaplain at the nursing center in Americus, where he will provide spiritual care for our residents and their families, as well as for our staff. When he isn’t serving the residents, Marty enjoys spending time with his children and wife of twenty years. Marcia Williams was born in Trinidad, West Indies. In 1969, she moved to the United States. Brooklyn, New

Marcia has been in ministry for quite some time. In 1996, she co-founded Vision of Jesus Church, which became a part of the United Methodist denomination in 2005. She is the South Columbus UMC Women’s Ministry Coordinator and Prayer Minister. She is also a Wesley Foundation Campus minister. Marcia lends a lot of her time to volunteer work and serving on committees within the community. Some of the places she has volunteered include the Sexual Assault Center and the Rutledge State Prison in Columbus. Between ministering and volunteering, she studied at Emory University and obtained a Bachelor’s in Sociology. Marcia is now the chaplain for our Macon campus, where she plans to continue providing spiritual care for others. Randy Mosley was raised in Waycross, but later moved to Brunswick. There, he attended Glynn Academy High School where he met his wife. They graduated from Glynn Academy in 1973 and got married the following year. In April of 2019, they will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. The couple has two daughters and seven grandsons. Randy has ministered across the state of Georgia. Some of the places he’s served include Remerton, Valdosta, Springfield, Turin, Hahira, Baxley, Bainbridge, and St. Marys. Now, he has made his way to Magnolia Manor of Moultrie, where he will help nurture residents’ spiritual health. In his spare time, Randy enjoys a number of hobbies. If he isn’t hunting, fishing, or spending time with family, he can be found admiring his many collections. He collects coins, antiques, pocket knives, Civil War memorabilia and many other items. Welcome to the Magnolia Manor family, Chaplains!

Dignity, respect, care and compassion for all It can be a scary time for seniors when they decide to move into senior living. Often, it’s a decision made together with their close family; but what if they have no family? You can rest assured our compassionate staff will be there for Cappy Cross someone if they find themselves in such a situation. Take, for example, the story of Virginia (not her real name). Last March, Cappy Cross, Magnolia Manor Resident Sales Coordinator, received a call on our 1-800 number from Virginia inquiring about Magnolia Manor. She was tearful in her questioning – not sure where to turn. She didn’t have enough money to make ends meet, and asked about moving to Magnolia Manor. Divorced, an only child, and unable to drive, she had no one to turn to. Cappy was immediately drawn in. She became a source of guidance and comfort for Virginia as she struggled. Drawing from her own personal experience of overcoming loss and doing without, the two instantly formed a bond. “I grew up in a home where we often had little or no food,” shares Cappy, “and then my mother passed away at an early age. So, I really have a soft spot for anyone in need!” The two started talking back and forth on a regular basis. One day, Cappy couldn’t get in touch with Virginia, and eventually found out she was in the hospital. It was at this time Cappy felt the need to start speaking seriously to her about making the move to nearby Magnolia Manor of Macon. With a background in the healthcare field and a true heart for older adults, Cappy offered “tough love” encouragement and advice. “One of my favorite sayings is from the movie Shawshank Redemption – ‘Get busy living, or get busy dying!’ My hope was for Virginia to find new life at Magnolia Manor.” After losing her mother, Cappy formed a strong connection with both sets of her grandparents. She often accompanied them when they went to the nursing

10

homes to offer rides to those who wanted to go to church. Cappy was raised to be respectful of elders and to follow the golden rule. “When I get to that age, how would I want someone to treat me?” she often asked herself. This led to a career in the healthcare field. When she was 18, Cappy began work as a CNA at Montezuma Healthcare. She worked her way up to the corporate office before taking time off to be a stay-at-home mom. Later, she went back to work as a radiology clerk, eventually climbing the ladder to a position as Chief Administrative Officer/interim Chief Operating Officer. Then, like many other small community hospitals, the hospital closed. That door closed, but another one opened at Magnolia Manor. “Looking back now, I realize if I hadn’t made my way to the Manor, I wouldn’t be available to help people like Virginia and others out there,” says Cappy. Virginia has been hurt many times in her life, so she is naturally suspicious of people. But the pull on Cappy’s heart was stronger than Virginia’s caution. For instance, there was the time she realized Virginia needed food. “I knew she didn’t want to see me in person yet,” shares Cappy. “I decided to go ahead and get food and leave it at her door. I then called to let her know. She was incredibly grateful and slowly began to trust me more.” It was another trip to the hospital that led to their meeting, more conversation, and the development of a true relationship. “Our relationship helps both of us!” says Cappy. Eventually, Virginia realized it was time to make the move. With many details to be worked out from the application process to the packing and moving, Virginia found comfort in knowing Cappy was by her side all the way - and will remain that way for as long as she needs her. It’s a fresh start, and she’s thankful for the move to Magnolia Manor of Macon. “When I think about those first conversations we shared,” says Cappy, “I realize there was very little laughter. Not true today! I’m thankful to work in a job where I am able to help those in need and bring a little joy back into their lives so they can get busy living!!” Dignity, respect, care and compassion for all!

Barbara Mitchell – Integrity through excellence Licensed as an RN in 1980, she came to Magnolia Manor in 1985 as an evening RN Supervisor, left after a few years, but couldn’t stay away. In 1996 she was licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator, serving in Barbara Mitchell that capacity at what is now our Buena Vista campus from 2004 to 2012. Through the years, she has climbed the ranks from Director of Nursing for the Nursing Center to Corporate Nurse. Now she is the Vice President for Clinical Services and Corporate Compliance Officer. She is none other than Barbara Mitchell. In her current position, Barbara is responsible for ensuring compliance with long-term care laws and regulations. But that’s not all she does. If you want to see a demonstration of integrity through excellence, look no further than Barbara Mitchell. Barbara’s involvement with the Georgia Health Care Association and the Georgia Center for Assisted Living (GHCA/GCAL) makes her an indispensable member of our team at Magnolia Manor. She has served on the Georgia Health Care Association Board of Directors since 2005. She has been the Chair of the Georgia Center for Assisted Living for three years. She is also an active member of the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), an organization affiliated with the assisted living functions of the American Health Care Association (AHCA). Barbara has worked on the NCAL Quality Committee and has been the Georgia NCAL State Leader for the past three years. In this role, she was closely involved in the development of an assisted living licensure category in Georgia.

“I am very excited to have been elected to the Board of Directors. I know that participating with assisted living at the national level will help me move assisted living in Georgia forward by learning how other states regulate and promote it,” stated Barbara. She and the other board members will work together representing assisted living providers across the country. Their responsibilities, among others, consist of advocating for favorable public policies and educating providers on ways to improve quality. Barbara hasn’t forgotten the many factors that contributed to her success. Her previous involvement with the NCAL played a major role. It gave her the opportunity to network and build friendships with other members. Her passion for providing quality care in the assisted living industry grew as she learned from colleagues. Now, as an at-large member on the NCAL Board of Directors, she plans to continue focusing on what matters most – the residents. “I think my election to the board will benefit the residents and Magnolia Manor by increasing my knowledge of assisted living across the country,” stated Barbara. From providing health care to assisting with the laws that help govern health care providers, she has done it all. You may ask, what’s next for Barbara? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see. You can remain informed on our latest efforts to provide quality care for our residents by following us on Facebook or visiting our website at www.magnoliamanor.com.

With such a long list of duties and accomplishments, you would think the list ends there. Well, think again. Barbara continues to demonstrate a strong work ethic. At the 2018 NCAL convention, Barbara added yet another accomplishment to her list. She was elected to serve on the Board of Directors.

Fall Recap – creative change and constant improvment While things slow down for many people during the Fall season, it’s a busy time of year at Magnolia Manor. Much like the changing seasons, Magnolia Manor has made lots of changes and improvements this year. Each year fundraising events raise money to improve the quality of life for our residents. This year’s fundraising events included the Super Hero 5K, Love Walk and Fun Run; the St. Marys Low Country Boil; and the John R. Batts Memorial Golf Classic. The Super Hero 5K was designed to support our benevolent fund known as The League of the Good Samaritan. The League helps fulfill our founders’ promise that “no one having chosen to come to Magnolia Manor would ever have to leave if, by no fault of their own, they were unable to pay.” Residents, staff, family, and friends of The Manor all gathered at the Americus campus to show their support as true superheroes for The League. Some of our superheroes even dressed the part along with their four-legged, furry sidekicks. With your help, we were able to raise a total of $26,000! Thanks to you, our residents in need can remain in the place they call home.

Club in Macon bright and early that morning. With golf clubs polished and carts all charged up, we set out on the course in search of victory. To say we found it would be an understatement. Thanks to everyone who participated, sponsored, donated, or volunteered; we raised a total of $35,000! These events aren’t just meaningful to our residents. They also unite communities and impact the lives of everyone involved, like Mrs. Doris Batts. Doris is the wife of the late Mr. John R. Batts. To express her gratitude, she wrote a letter to the editor.

We also want to ensure that their homes are adequately equipped in the event of an emergency. For the past three years, hurricanes have threatened our coastal campuses; and in the past two years, our campuses in the southwest region of Georgia were impacted by two hurricanes that knocked out power for days. These events caused us to realize we needed emergency backup generators at each of our campuses. The proceeds from the St. Marys Low Country Boil and the John R. Batts Memorial Golf Classic went to the emergency generator fund. At the St. Marys Low Country Boil, we feasted on delicious seafood and danced to the melodious sounds of Rick Davis. The good news is that we exceeded our fundraising goal! The proceeds reached an all-time high of $23,000! The John R. Batts Memorial Golf Classic was a success as well. The teams arrived at the Idle Hour Country

We would like to express our gratitude as well. We thank every donor, participant, volunteer, and sponsor! We couldn’t have done any of this without you. Because of your kindness, our retirement centers are better equipped for emergencies and our residents in need can continue to call Magnolia Manor their home. We hope to see you next year! In the meantime, stay posted on upcoming events by visiting our website at www. magnoliamanor.com, or follow us on Facebook.

Mr. Buchanan

VALUES

– Healthy mind, body, and spirit

Gloster Buchanan came to Magnolia Manor of St. Simons Island in need of temporary rehabilitative therapy. In his time here, he graciously agreed to share his story with us. This isn’t just any ordinary story either. He invites us on a journey to a time that many have forgotten and some have never even heard. But you can rest assure that Mr. Buchanan remembers. This 102 year old World War II veteran has a memory as sharp as a bayonet. Mr. Buchanan was born in Jeff Davis County, GA on June 6, 1916. He grew up in a very large family with twentytwo siblings. Their family history can be traced back to the 1800s. His father had an older brother named Jim and an older sister named Fanny. They were freed from slavery in 1865 when the United States passed the Thirteenth Amendment. Since Uncle Jim was the eldest of the three, he took on the responsibility of selecting their last name; making them the Buchanan family. In 1933, Mr. Buchanan arrived to a St. Simons Island that many wouldn’t recognize today. The population consisted of a few hundred permanent residents. There were no traffic lights. The land was very cheap. And it only cost $0.20 to cross the toll bridge. “But if you didn’t have $0.20, you could cross the bridge on credit,” Mr. Buchanan laughingly recalls.

It didn’t take long to settle into his new life on the island. He found a place to rent and started working at the Sea Island Company doing landscaping for $0.15 an hour. He even began attending church services at the Episcopal Church. It was there that a woman playing the pipe organ sparked his curiosity. “She would look up at that music rack and her feet would be moving the pedals down there at the bottom. I couldn’t figure that out. I would mostly come to church just to see her,” Mr. Buchanan smiles and reminisces. She caught his attention and has had it ever since. That woman became Mrs. Buchanan on June 15, 1940. Last June, they celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary. You can believe they know a thing or two about maintaining a long, happy marriage. Mr. Buchanan shares one valuable lesson he has learned about marriage: “You’re going to have these quarrels. You just have to learn how to make up and live together.” Mr. Buchanan has also learned valuable lessons from his work experiences. Once, the Sea Island Company suffered a financial set-back and was forced to lay off some of their workers. Mr. Buchanan happened to be one of them. Thankfully, he was able to find work at the Brunswick Marine shipyard working in the clinic. Article continued on page 16

The shipyard was placed under new management, and they immediately began building Liberty ships for World War II. Mr. Buchanan worked in the clinic assisting doctors with tasks such as setting bones and driving the ambulance. From these experiences, he developed a strong work ethic and an ability to get along well with others. Through his dedication to the shipyard clinic, Mr. Buchanan was able to make a contribution to the nation during World War II. Soon after that, he was given the opportunity to play a more direct role. He was drafted into the medical corps of the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943. He trained at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA, then was shipped to Sheffield, Texas. He stayed there a while before transferring to Luke Field base near Phoenix, Arizona. After serving a total of three years and nine months, Mr. Buchanan returned to St. Simons Island. Back at home, he took up a trade in brick masonry. He laid bricks for thirty-five years before retiring. Some of the buildings he helped construct are still standing today. Mr. Buchanan has uncovered the mystery of living a full life well into his golden years. He believes it has a lot to do with his dedication to living by the Golden

16

Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” “Do the right thing and God will store up a blessing for you and give you a long, good life,” says Mr. Buchanan. It also helps that he remains active. Mr. Buchanan enjoys fishing and tending to his tree farm. He owns five acres of land planted with trees that yield tangerines, navel oranges, pears, and different types of figs. After a hard day of work, he retreats to one of his favorite fishing holes he has discovered on the island. Mr. Buchanan is also active in the community. He stores meats in his freezer at home to give to those in need. When he isn’t gardening or fishing, he enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife have a daughter, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Although Mr. Buchanan has completed his therapy and has gone back home with his family, his stories and wisdom will hold a permanent place in our hearts. It may be safe to say that Magnolia Manor has made a great impact on his life as well. “It’s been wonderful. Magnolia Manor is top of the line!” beams Mr. Buchanan. “The thing I liked most about being there is how nice people were to me. I’ll tell anybody, it’s the top of the line!”

Mr. Carl would grieve himself to death. He did grieve, but one day he decided to venture out into the hallway where the piano was being played. After a while, a group of ladies congregated as well. He quickly returned to his apartment. After that day, I made it my duty to invite him to every activity we offered. We saw a man that had relied solely on his loving wife becoming more independent. Don’t get me wrong, we still spoil him. Many of the staff call him Daddy or Papa. He belongs to everyone here. It is still difficult to decipher his requests. He has limited speech because of the stroke he had 17 years ago. His favorite phrase is “okie dokie.” He seems to say that when he’s content. The residents have grown to love him as well. They interact and communicate in their own way. My administrative assistant, Faith Morrell, developed a communication tool using pictures and words. We use it to communicate with Mr. Carl. It includes his most used personal items, complete keyboard for spelling, and a yes or no page. She wanted to enhance his life and decided to offer this tool to him. Such a blessing! Mr. Carl plays in the Age Beaters Rhythm Band, participates in painting activities, and always, always participates in our outings away from the community.

I knew from the moment I met Mrs. Marcia she expected me to take care of her husband after she left this world. We have formed a relationship filled with love and trust. I think of him as a father and I strive daily to make sure he’s happy, comfortable, and living his life to the fullest. I know Mrs. Marcia is smiling down on him every time he attends an activity. All of the residents at Magnolia Manor are special to me, but Mr. Carl has touched my heart in so many ways. He is proof that you can certainly overcome challenges and obstacles. He reminds us to never give up because of a disability. Mr. Carl makes my heart smile every time I see him. He loves his beloved wife, Marcia, but hasn’t allowed her death to stop him from living. She lives in his heart and the hearts of many. Mrs. Marcia, you can rest knowing Mr. Carl is being loved and cared for. The Duren family appreciates the wonderful staff at Magnolia Manor, saying “We are so very grateful to have gotten them into such an awesome home!” There are stories like this taking place every day on every one of our Magnolia Manor campuses. We have employees not just doing a job, but having genuine love in their hearts for our residents.

RETIREES Linda Colson

Forty-one years ago, Linda Colson began working at the Americus Nursing Center as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), then became a nurse. Although she was hired to handle residents’ health care needs, she went far beyond that to a mission of changing lives. Everyone who knows Linda has been touched by her ability to emulate the characteristics of a true servant leader. “Linda has been an outstanding employee and not only practiced ‘person-centered care’, but set it as an expectation for her staff. If you look at the Servant Leadership characteristics, Linda has each of those characteristics. As a leader she was fair, direct, and helped her staff to grow personally and professionally,” stated Jane House, Americus Retirement Center Administrator. After working at the Nursing Center for a while, Linda transferred to the Retirement Center where she continued to demonstrate great leadership qualities. Those leadership qualities earned her the position of Section Manager. Throughout her career, she served as an inspiration, confidant, role model, and coach to residents and fellow employees. Linda’s career may have come to an end at Magnolia Manor, but she will always occupy a place in our hearts. Linda, your Magnolia Manor family loves you! And we pray for the best in your retirement.

24

Walter McArthur

Many know him as Mr. Mac. Those who have had the pleasure of working with him, know him to be a quiet man of great humility and hard work. Walter McArthur joined the Magnolia Manor family of Columbus 45 years ago and has been a vital branch in the family tree ever since. He has worn several hats throughout the years. From transportation to maintenance, Mr. Mac has done it all. “What I saw with Mr. Mac is that he cared about people. It wasn’t just a job he was doing. He did it to the best of his ability because he cared about the people he was serving,” stated Hill Fort, Senior Vice President for Operations. Now the time has come for Mr. Mac to put on a different hat - that of a retired Magnolia Manor employee. While his employment status at Magnolia Manor has changed, some things never will. True to the nature of his strong work ethic, Mr. Mac plans on spending his retirement doing what he does best - working. He will be helping out around his church. His presence will certainly be missed around here, but he is always welcome to visit any time. Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Mac. You’ve earned it!
