H IGHLIGHTS Billings Parks and Recreation is excited for another great summer and fall full of activities for everyone! There are plenty of new programs, along with some old favorites. Check out a few of the programs and activities we have highlighted below:

Strike Zone Batting Cages - Page 68 The Strike Zone Batting Cages are open from April until August. For rates and hours of operation, go to page 68.

Learn to Swim Lessons - Pages 5-7 Your child deserves the best swim instructors, which is why all of our swim lessons are taught by American Red Cross trained and certified instructors. The best swim lessons in town can be found at Billings Parks and Recreation.

Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga - Page 12 We are excited to offer Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga classes at Rose Park Pool this summer. This one is guaranteed to be fun and challenging!

Magic City Summer Camp - Page 43 A classic youth camp that is making it’s comeback! Magic City will feature activities that highlight the best that Billings has to offer.

A QUATICS ROSE PARK POOL PARTY BIRTHDAY PACKAGE Celebrate a birthday at Rose Park Pool during regular business hours. Package includes up to 15 All Day Admissions & Water Slide passes, one hot dog, one 16 oz. soda, a bag of chips and an ice cream sandwich, per participant for $150! (Each additional child is $10). Up to two adult chaperones included in entrance price. Parties are welcome to bring their own birthday cake and presents. Each party will have the use of 4 reserved picnic tables in our concession area, for a maximum of two hours.

A QUATICS SWIM LESSONS Splash into swim lessons this summer with the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program. This course features six levels of Learn‐to‐Swim instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience. American Red Cross Learn‐to‐ Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach participants to swim and be safe in, on, and around water. Choose the appropriate level from the descriptions below: Level 4: Stroke Improvement Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills Helps students feel comfortable in water. Develops confidence in the skills learned and Enter and exit water safely. improves other aquatic skills. Level 5: Stroke Refinement Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency Refines the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater Level 3: Stroke Development distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice. TAILORED SWIM LESSONS Feeling a little timid about swim lessons? The Parks and Recreation Department is offering an opportunity for one‐on‐one swim instruction. These custom and tailored lessons are designed to best meet the individual needs of the student, allowing the student to progress at their own unique pace, to maximize learning. Lessons are offered to beginner and advanced students. All lessons are instructed by American Red Cross Certified Swim Instructors.

GUARD START: LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow is a program for 12‐15 year‐olds that provides a foundation of aquatic knowledge, leadership, and skills for a future as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. The GuardStart curriculum contains multiple units in five categories (prevention, fitness, response, leadership, and professionalism). Participants will participate in numerous lifeguarding duties to prepare them for their future Lifeguard accomplishments. All participants must be able to swim 25 yds., tread water for 1 minute, and swim underwater at least 10 feet.

A QUATICS LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASS Looking for a summer job opportunity?

The Billings Parks and Recreation Department is looking for qualified individuals to become lifeguards ($10.75 hourly wage) at city pools. Each participant must complete American Red Cross certification course to be eligible for employment with the Billings Parks and Recreation Department.

American Red Cross Lifeguards must be at least 16 years old, able to swim 300 yards and dive 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. All applicants who enroll in this class should also fill out an employment application indicating their participation in the class on their application. All new applicants interested in employment (not currently certified) must pass this class to be considered for employment.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI) The Water Safety Instructor program (WSI), is for individuals looking to improve and amplify their training to become a certified swimming lesson instructor. The course consists of 30 hours focused on teaching instructors in life saving swimming techniques. Throughout the course, you can expect to increase your presentation skills, refine your swimming strokes and leadership skills. The Billings Parks and Recreation Department has made it a priority to have all swim lesson instructors complete the WSI course prior to teaching swim lessons.

A QUATICS DISCOVER SCUBA Have you ever wondered what it's like to breathe underwater? Sign up for Adventure Scuba's Discovery Scuba Diving Experience and find out what scuba diving is really like before you sign up for the full scuba certification course. PADI OPEN WATER/SCUBA CLASS The Billings Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Adventure Scuba, is offering the PADI Open Water Diver Course. This course is the first step towards becoming a certified scuba diver.

As a PADI Open Water Diver, you'll explore the underwater realm, see new creatures and experience your world from an entirely new perspective. A QUATICS AQUA ZUMBA Known as the Zumba Pool Party, Aqua Zumba gives a new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Aqua Zumba integrates the Zumba formula with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines to create a safe, challenging, water‐based workout that’s cardio‐training, body toning, and exhilarating.

CARDIO WATER EXERCISE Back again this summer is one of our favorite outdoor, water‐based fitness classes. Cardio Water exercise is a fun, workout that will help you tone up and burn extra calories with the gentle resistance of water. Flotation noodles and foam dumbbells will be used, and the workout can be modified to your desired level. It’s a safe, fun, and effective water class for all fitness levels!

A QUATICS STAND UP PADDLE BOARD YOGA If you’re looking for a fun new challenging form of yoga that is still beginner friendly, Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga is right for you! This activity is guaranteed to spice up your Yoga regiment, while using the calming affect of floating on water to help you become focused and relaxed. This class is taught by Yogini Sara Hashemi, certified Yoga and S.U.P yoga Instructor.

LEARN TO KAYAK Kayaking can be as relaxing or challenging as you make it. This summer, we have teamed up with Sunshine Sports to help you learn the basics of Kayaking with professional instruction in the safety of South Park Pool. This course, using the latest ACA teaching methods, is designed for beginners or those who wish to develop better paddling skills in a controlled environment. Kayaks, skirts, and paddles are supplied, but it is recommended that you bring a snorkeling mask or nose plugs. Aqua or kayaking shoes may be helpful as the kayak foot brace may be uncomfortable to bare feet. Upon registration we need your height, weight, shoe size and waist size to prepare size appropriate kayak gear and equipment. No cancellations or refunds within 7 days of the start of each session.

Water Friendly Toys and Life jackets are allowed and Lifeguards will be on duty. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs on the pool deck and lawn. Owners are not allowed in the pool for safety concerns. All dogs must be up to date with current rabies shots and vaccinations.

Y OUTH S PORTS YOUTH TENNIS INSTRUCTION The 2016 Billings Parks and Recreation Summer Tennis Program kicks off June 6th with a summer of tennis learning and fun for Billings youth. Once again, the program's goal is to provide tennis activities for all ages and ability levels. Novice and Intermediate Youth will find lesson groups and tennis play in the Parks Program at Pioneer Park, Rose Park, and Castle Rock Park. Each group, determined by age, is conducted over 3 weeks in a session. All lessons follow the United States Tennis Association (USTA) guidelines for 10 & Under Tennis. 10 & Under tennis utilizes shorter nets, smaller court dimensions, a modified scoring system and modified balls that are better suited for younger player’s skill levels. In order to ensure proper racquet control and skill development, young players should select racquets that are proportional to their size. For 8 & under, racquets should be 19‐23 inches and for 10 & Under, racquets should be 23‐25 inches. There will be two instructors per session. Lessons are coordinated by Brad Knutson (USPTA Instructor).

Lessons are Monday through Thursdays with op onal Friday Game Days at the Rose Park Tennis Courts. All ages and abili es are welcome. Ages 10 & Under play from 9:00am‐10:00am.

INSTRUCTOR BIO Brad Knutson grew up loving the game of tennis in his hometown of Billings, MT. Brad played throughout his youth and went on to play collegiate tennis for the Montana State University Billings Yellow Jackets, where he held the #3 singles and #1 doubles positions. Brad has been teaching tennis professionally for the past three years and is certified under the United States Professional Teaching Association (USPTA). Brad is going into his seventh summer teaching tennis for the Parks and Recreation department and is currently the Assistant Director of Tennis at the Elks Tennis Center.

SOBE TENNIS TOURNAMENTS If you are looking to put your tennis skills to the test this summer, The Billings Tennis Association (BTA), in conjunction with SOBE, will be hosting one day, no elimination tournaments throughout the Summer. The Sobe tournaments will be held Saturdays at Pioneer Park, free to all junior tennis players looking to compete and have fun in a friendly environment. S PECIAL I NTEREST ROCKET CAMP A beginners course to model rocketry that has participants constructing three rockets from Skill Level 1! Learn about the forces acting on a rocket while in flight, parts of rockets, stages of rocket flight, rocket motors, staging and the physics of motion and aerodynamics. Our Camp counselors are American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified and will follow established camp/bus rules to ensure safety at all times. We strive to maintain a 8 to 1 participant to counselor ratio at all times for camp. Any changes due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances, will be communicated as soon as possible to participants.

Required EACH DAY at camp: sack lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, bug spray, towel, swimsuit, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes and a change of clothes. Personal items and electronics are discouraged at camp (exception during show & tell). Any allergies to food, sun screen, bug spray, etc. should be communicated to camp staff.

Y OUTH C AMPS ADVENTURE CAMP THEMES June 6‐10 & July 25 ‐29: Trail Blazers, explore the Wild West and learn the skills the early trappers, pioneers, and mountain men mastered. Camp will focus on the early inhabitants and settlers of Yellowstone Valley and the surrounding areas.

June 13‐17 & Aug 8‐12: Survivor Challenge, an unique experience that tests campers endurance, attitude, team spirit, wilderness knowledge and resourcefulness. By focusing on teamwork and building unity among ALL campers, everyone is sure to enjoy this thrilling camp. Activities include: small team challenges, historical landmark tours and hiking!

June 20‐24 & July 18‐22: Ultimate Outdoor Adventure, a mega adventure that exposes campers to the extreme outdoors. There is overnight camping on Thursday night each week (menus and overnight schedule are provided prior to camping trip). Activities include: overnight camping, white water rafting and much more!

July 5‐8 : Zombie Survival Camp, as outrageous as your child’s imagination, this camp will provide creative scenarios that teach life saving survival skills. Gore is limited; however the post‐apocolypse sensation is explored at great lengths. Activities include: zombie dress, zombie races and zombie challenges.

July 11‐15 : Into the Wild, geared towards learning about nature and what it has to offer, this ‘hands on’ camp enlightens campers as to what our great state has to offer. Activities include: Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, Yellowtail Dam and Pompey’s Pillar.

June 27‐July 1 & Aug 1‐5: Incredible Aquatic Exploration, make a splash this summer with exciting water activities! Water education is provided, as well as exposure to new aquatic experiences. Activities include: white water rafting, snorkeling and water slides!

August 15‐19: Outdoor and Sport safety, as the summer comes to a close, our staff wants to ensure your camper has learned the importance of safety in all activities. This week recaps and provides new skills in regards to outdoor and sport safety. Activities include: water rescue, public safety and sports medicine.

After making Tohkon warrior headbands and clan flags, these girls will discover their inner courage on a rock wall and have sponge wars. Every Ninja needs to know how to quickly escape any situation so we will swim, paddle, and skate our way through obstacle courses and activities specifically designed to help girls hone their Ninja Skills. Y OUTH C AMPS THE ULTIMATE RIVALRY CAMP This camp puts a fun twist on the Ultimate Rivalry of childhood: Boys vs Girls!

Participants will be split into teams the first day of camp to compete in various activities that will award points throughout the week. Competition will be kept friendly and activities will emphasize teamwork and building self窶親steem. Activities will be coordinated in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming.

C OMMUNITY I NFO AMEND PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN Come join us in the Amend Park Community Garden for its 3rd year. In 2015, the garden produced over 2,000 lbs of produce and was recognized by the Montana Trails, Recreation and Parks Association with a citation of Merit for Agency Excellence. Not an experienced Gardener? We'll meet you where you're at! Come to learn, grow, and connect with a diversity of backgrounds, skill levels, and experiences. Tools, water, soil, seeds, and know‐how are provided by us. At the garden, we offer mentors to those who request some guidance throughout the growing season, as well as workshops and community events that are open to the public.

Maintaining a plot throughout the growing season can be a big commitment, so if you don't feel up to it we'd still love to have you stay informed and involved in whatever capacity is good for you; just shoot us an email or give us a call. As the only city‐owned community garden here in Billings, we pride ourselves on building a publicly accessible space for learning, growing, healing, and engaging in all of its forms. Whether you want to connect with the local food movement, build a stronger community, or just grow some fresh produce for your home, our gates are open.

VOLUNTEER PARK RANGER Come be a part of a team of Park Rangers who are passionate about the City's Parks and Trails.

Rangers work as hosts for the parks, welcoming visitors and serving as an extra set of “eyes and ears” for the Parks and Recreation Department. Volunteers are asked to commit to weekly visits at assigned parks or trails for one season. Rangers will participate in an orientation and training prior to beginning their assignment. C OMMUNITY I NFO COMMUNITY ARBOR DAY Come join us for the award winning celebration of Arbor Day at North Park. Tree activities will occur throughout the day. The park will be filled with over 500 elementary students from local 4th grade classes to learn about environment related issues from local professionals. Volunteers are needed to assist with the education stations, as well as work projects such as planting trees. All volunteers will receive an official t‐shirt and lunch. BIKE RODEO Come join Billings Kiwanis Club for the 20th annual Bike Rodeo! This event is free and will take place on Saturday, May 21st at Rose Park from 8am ‐ 12pm. This event will give bikes to youth in Kindergarten through 4th grade. Volunteers will be available to perform minor repairs on bicycles for kids of all ages (fix flat tires. adjust loose chains, adjust seat height, etc.). Donated bikes that have been serviced by volunteers are available on a first‐come basis when kids bring a bike deemed beyond repair. Volunteers will also provided bike helmets, safety instruction and refreshments.

Alcohol Permits If you plan on having alcohol at your event you must purchase an Alcohol Permit from the Parks and Recrea on Department office. This is for beer and wine only (no glass containers). Permits may be obtained in person at the Parks & Recrea on office. Alcohol permits cost $75 and are non‐ refundable & non‐transferable. (No permits are issued for Coulson, Swords or Riverfront Parks)

Park Use Permits A Park Use Permit is required for any event that is open to the general public and is available for requests to reserve a specific park area for weddings, company picnics or family reunions. Events open to the public include youth sports leagues, concerts, fun runs, and special group events. A $100 permit fee is charged on a per park basis for general permits and is non‐refundable. Permits for athle c usage are per field/season and rates vary according to usage. Events open to the public require liability insurance that meets the mandatory guidelines contained in the applica on. You can pick up a permit applica on at the Parks and Recrea on Department, located at, 390 North 23rd Street. Zimmerman Center is located at 1801 Virginia Lane in Pioneer Park. The building includes a food prep area, restrooms, and a multi‐purpose room. This building is ideal for groups of 50 or less for meetings or social events. Available for rent to the public 8:00 am ‐ 10:00 pm.

The North Park Center is located at 6th Ave. North and North 19th Street. The center has approximately 5,600 sq. ft. all on one level. This includes a small gym, kitchen area complete with stove, refrigerator, and sink. The center also features a multi‐purpose room and restrooms. The building is great for events of 100 or less such as meetings, social gatherings, receptions and more.

R ENTAL I NFORMATION PARK SHELTERS Billings Parks and Recreation has some great shelters located throughout the city that are a perfect place to host a family reunion, company picnic, birthday party or get together! All picnic shelters are available on a first‐come, first‐serve basis unless they are reserved through a paid rental.

Rental reservations for shelters must be paid for in advance at the Parks and Recreation Office or online. NON-RESIDENT POLICIES

Various programs may list activity deadlines for registration. Generally the deadline for registration is one week prior to the start of the activity, or session when there are multiple sessions being offered.

This enables us to produce and distribute participant rosters to instructors as well as combine low enrollment classes rather than cancel them.

For people who do not reside within the city limits there will be a non-resident fee of $10 per activity charged in addition to the regular program fee. This fee is to nonrefundable, except in the case of a cancelled or filled class which prohibits participation in a program.

REDUCED FEE APPLICATIONS Applications are available for low income families to apply for reduced fees for specific summer recreation programs.

Applicants must be city residents and can receive up to a 75% discount if qualified.

Reduced children’s pool passes are also available. Pick up an application in person at the Parks and Recreation Office.

ACTIVITY TRANSFER Requests to transfer to a different program activity once registered must be made at least five business days prior to the scheduled starting date. Transfers will be done when possible depending upon enrollment availability.

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS Provided by the Billings Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation The Billings Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation is offering scholarships for children to enroll in activities. Scholarships are limited and will be made available on a first come, first served basis to qualifying applicants. The purpose of the program is to assist families that cannot normally afford sporting, cultural or enrichment type activities for their children due to economic hardships. This fund is made possible through the generous support of the Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation. Scholarship Applications must be picked up in person and are available at the Parks and Recreation office. Our THANKS to the Foundation for supporting Parks & Recreation and our city’s youth!
