Parkland Gleaning Project

Do you enjoy spending time outside? Do you like eating fresh fruit? Are you interested in exploring Billings in a new way? If so, learn about and take part in the Parkland Gleaning Project! The goal of the Parkland Gleaning Project is to increase local access to fresh foods through fruit trees in city parks that community members can visit and collect fruit. Recruit your family, invite your friends, or go on a solo adventure! There are 7 main parks included in the Parkland Gleaning Project (Comanche, Highland, Kings Green, Lillis, Optimist, Primrose, and Rose Park), but many other parks and edible trees have been mapped online. For more information, visit billingsparks. org/parkland-gleaning. If you are interested in participating in a volunteer gleaning event through which we harvest fruit to donate to local organizations that serve low-income families, reach out to Paul Reinhardt, the Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, at reinhardtp@billingsmt.gov. 67

Arbor Day

Join Parks and Recreation Department for our annual Arbor Day Celebration! Our Parks are home to over 10,000 trees! We understand the many benefits that trees provide to our park users and community as a whole. From providing shade to storm water management, urban temperature regulation to increasing property values, trees have a larger impact on our everyday lives than we often recognize. This year, we will be holding our Arbor Day Celebration at Castle Rock Park on Thursday, May 5th, which will consist of tree plantings, Educational Booths for SD2 fourth graders, the official Arbor Day Ceremony and the planting of the Arbor Day Tree! Volunteers are needed for this event. If you would like to participate in the event, please contact Paul Reinhardt, Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator directly at 406-657- 8308 or by email at reinhardtp@billingsmt.gov. Groups and individuals are welcome!

Scholarship Programs Youth Scholarship Program

The Billings Parks & Recreation Scholarship Fund provides youth in our community access to recreational programs whose families may be experiencing economic hardships. These scholarships provide eligible families exposure to positive experiences and active lifestyles. Through our programs, children are provided the opportunity to gain and refine life skills, and to develop positive personal and social assets. We need your help to provide recreation opportunities to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity! Your donation will help to provide an enrichment activity, class or program that will help a child build essential characteristics that are needed to succeed in life. 100% of the donations to this fund go directly to support scholarships for Billings’ youth. To apply for a scholarship, please stop by the Parks & Recreation office to pick up a scholarship application. For more information about donating, please stop by the Parks & Recreation office (390 N. 23rd St) or visit www.BillingsParks.org
