Point of View Email is a Pain Email is a pain. There are simply too many messages to handle—and I'm not even talking about spam from marketers (I use a separate address to collect those emails). The headache is the increasing number of legitimate business messages—it's a humongous time-suck that only seems to be getting worse.

Two years ago I answered nearly every message. A year ago I downgraded to at least trying to read them all. Last winter I started scanning the sender subject fields concentrating on the ones coming from people I knew or looked like they might contain information I needed. And lately, I've been considering closing my account and starting over with a private address reserved for only work colleagues and select sources.

Until, that is, I tried SaneBox. It's like Gmail's Priority Inbox feature in that it looks at your messages and prior history engaging with those senders and decides which emails you're likely to deem most important.

When you turn on the Priority Inbox feature in Gmail, Google separates your email into three categories: Important and unread, Starred, and Everything Else; all the mail is still in your inbox, but the important messages are up top.

SaneBox is a bit different in that it removes less important messages from your inbox completely, moving them to an @SaneLater folder that you can peruse whenever you want. If SaneBox puts an important message into that folder you can move it to your inbox and it remembers the action so the next time you receive a message from that person, it will go to your inbox.

Priority Inbox is trainable in this way, as well; the more you move stuff around, the better it gets at categorization. But I prefer SaneBox. SaneBox vs. Gmail's Priority Inbox SaneBox gives you a custom dashboard including a timeline that graphs how many important and less important emails you get every day. My current average, according to SaneBox, is 81 a day. If I took a minute to read, digest, and respond to each one of them, that's nearly an hour and a half a day going through email. If you figure there's at least 250 work days in a year, I'm spending 375 hours annually on email. That's not acceptable.

In addition to the @SaneLater folder that stores non-essential messages, you can also enable folders such as @SaneNews for newsletters and @SaneBlackHole for those messages you want to send straight to your Trash. (Ha! Finally I'm getting revenge on a certain five-letter-titled fitness magazine that has not let me unsubscribe to its newsletters for two full years!)

Automated nagging!

And it also has a nifty feature that lets you CC or BCC a message to @SaneBox.com to remind you if someone doesn't respond.

So let's say you need an answer from your boss about a project and you need it no later than two days from now. In the CC field just include the address 2days@SaneBox.com and in two days SaneBox will put the message back in the top of your inbox if she never replied to it. This way you remember to bug her again.

SaneBox also creates an @SaneRemindMe folder that lets you keep track of all the messages to which you still need replies. Use oneweek@SaneBox.com, June5@SaneBox.com or 5minutes@SaneBox.com; it doesn't matter, SaneBox will figure out the time frame you need.

The service is $5 a month and works with email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, iPhone, and Android and as well most email services like Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo, AOL, and Gmail. The only service it doesn't currently support is Hotmail.

It's Monday after a near perfect weekend, weather wise, in Wasaga Beach.

It was a quiet one for me... as THIS past weekend was to be our THIRD Annual Beach BOOSTER Back to The Beach Festival!

I had high hopes that with the amazing efforts of the Beach BOOSTER Team and our valued Volunteers and Sponsors.... we would could make this Two Day Festival a great Annual Event that was to continue to recognize the history of The Beach and continue to bring Family Friendly Entertainment BACK to our Historic Main Street in August.

For our first two years, although we brought World Class Entertainment BACK to our Main Street... we were not blessed with the best summer weather. Each of those two years... we wished for the kind of weather we enjoyed THIS past weekend!

It was with much regret, that after the very challenging and disappointing, pre and post dealings with the current Town Hall for the Beach BOOSTER SLEDFEST in January and our Inaugural Beach BOOSTER Wasaga Grand Prix (World Class, professionally organized Go Kart Racing at our Main Beach in June) that I felt we could not continue to bring events to our town. Beach BOOSTER is very disappointed and we too look forward to change. We love this town.... and we have always enjoyed attempting to present fun and entertaining events that promote our town and our local businesses in a positive way.

It's what this Town was built on!

Since I made the announcement that we were suspending all planned events.... I have not heard from one member of our current council.... or been questioned by town staff about my decision! This further strengthens my belief, that all we have attempted to do over the last several years.... means nothing to the folks of Lewis Street. who seldom gave us any encouragement along the way!

I can assure you Wasaga Beach.... we have GREAT plans for the future!

Entertainment in The Beach!

Bringing the War of 1812 to Wasaga Beach Relive the experience of the War of 1812. This is a four-day heritage festival, from August 14th to 17th in celebration of the 12th Annual Wasaga Under Siege, the 200th Commemoration of the Nottawasaga Bay and the Sinking of the HMS Nancy taking place at the Historic Nancy Island. Beach Booster is a proud sponsor of this annual living history festival.

Nancy Island will come to life once again with the roar of cannon fire, fireworks, and the music finale of the 1812 overture to engulf the Nottawasaga River. Over 400 re-enactors and encampment will take part in the history through the streets and waters of the Town of Wasaga Beach, Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and Nancy Island Historic Site. Prior to and during the event, the theatre will be illuminated outside with a projected 1812 in lights. The US Brig Niagara is confirmed to participate in this year's battle events. “It has been reconstructed and it still has the original timbers and parts from the original ship having a version of her back for the commemorative activities, is a great honour”, said David Brunelle, Chairman of Wasaga Under Siege War 1812.

On August 14th, 1814 the Brig Niagara, Schooners Tigress and Scorpion discovered HMS Nancy hiding in the Nottawasaga River. A battle ensued leading to the destruction and sinking of HMS Nancy.

The Brig Niagara, a 198-foot, two-masted, squarerigged sailing vessel, is different than a tall ship or sailing ship it's a war ship. She had a crew of 155 men and boys who manned her sails, 18 carronades and two long guns. This ship will be sailing over to Wasaga Beach Area 1 & 2 on Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to participate in the battle re-enactments firing its canons on the beach. During the day deck tours will be available at Collingwood Waterfront – Promenade on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.

An official commemorative coin has been minted for this occasion. “One thousand minted coins all numbered for participants and VIPs with some being sold to the public at Nancy Island Historic Site,” said Brunelle. Names will be registered in a database to store the origin of the coin.

This marks Brunelle's last year as Special Event Coordinator for Wasaga Under Siege War of 1812.

“My fondness memories is seeing this living history event over the last 12 years grow from a small community event with more community partners getting involved to becoming a staple event in Wasaga Beach. The re-enactors always loved and supported the event really well, being able to promote the history and everybody that comes to the event takes a part with them away. I know that I've done my job educating the public and promoting the fact that Canadian history is not boring, it's exciting.

You just have to go out there and find it,” said Brunelle.

What has this to do with Wasaga Beach? Plenty. Like everywhere else in the world times have changed. Our visitor population catchment mix is different, our economy is different and people travel differently than 20 years ago.

According to Albert Einstein; “"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." We need to change the channel and change the way we think about how we invest economically, socially and environmentally in this town to make this town the preferred community in which to live, work and play.

So let’s talk about jobs. You are pushing a rope if you think we can attract traditional industry to this town. Our number one industry is tourism. We have to understand how tourism has changed and how we can re-invent our Wasaga Beach to gain differential advantage given many of our competitors are going to adjust to the same conditions. We have many strengths and advantages in this town and we have to identify them to invest in the right opportunities.

Today investing in the environment makes money. Take one example such as cycling. Cycling trails are a sought after commodity by tourists these days. Montreal is now recognized internationally for its cycling trails. The international reputation of the Go Bike Montréal Festival attracts many people to Montreal.

According to an economic impact survey conducted by the CROP firm, 22% of participants in the 2013 Go Bike Montréal Festival were tourists and travellers, and nearly 80% of them came to Montreal specifically to participate in the event.

We have the Wasaga Beach Waterfront Trail of 11.5 km. This waterfront trail starts from Beach Area 2 Park winding along the waterfront using some roads to link each beach. From Beach 6 onwards, the trail mostly follows Shore Lane. There are many opportunities for picnicking, stopping for a swim, or watching the wildlife in the dune areas. What about getting our restaurants, attractions and accommodations to make their facilities bike friendly in terms of storage and support. Add to that, connecting this trail to other routes within the Town and beyond to neighbouring landmarks and towns in addition to the connections we have today. Can we put our heads together and develop a cycle festival in Wasaga Beach and get support from connecting communities in Bruce, Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe? Yes we can do this. We have the talent and the capability. Change our thinking. Change our town.

Approx. Pop. 2,500. Part of Brock Township, Reg. Municipality of Durham, on the East shore of Lake Simcoe at the mouth of the Beaverton River and County Roads 23 & 15, 38 km. Southeast of Orillia. Scottish settlers first arrived in 1822. The community was known as Milltown, Milton, and Beaver River until the Beaverton post office opened in 1836. The Indians originally referred to the place as Beaver because there were many in the river of the same name. St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, known locally as the Old Stone Church, was built from fieldstone over 13 years by members of its congregation, starting in 1840. Services were conducted in English and Gaelic.

John Ritchie MacNicol (August31,1878 - June 18, l950) John Ritchie MacNicol was a Canadian politician.

Born in Beaverton, Ontario, MacNicol was educated at public school, collegiates, and at Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, New York. He taught school in Algoma and Grey Counties, Ontario. From 1917 to 1920, he was president of the South York LiberalConservative Association. From 1921 to 1922, he was president of the Ward 6 Toronto Association. From 1921 to 1923, he was secretary of the Liberal-Conservative Association of Ontario and was president from 1923 to 1930. He was president of the federal Conservative Party from 1925 to 1943.

He was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons for the Ontario riding of Toronto Northwest in the 1930 federal election. He was re-elected in 1935, 1940, and 1945 for the riding of Davenport. He was defeated by Paul Hellyer in the 1949 election

ATV limits 'big issue locally’

The provincial representative for Leeds-Grenville is pushing for a change in regulations governing all-terrain vehicles, which the president of a local ATV club says would have great economical benefit to the area.

Leeds-Grenville Member of Provincial Parliament Steve Clark recently delivered a Member’s Statement in the Legislature calling on the Ministry of Transportation to amend regulations governing the use of ATVs. Currently, only single-rider, fourwheeled vehicles with steering handlebars are allowed to drive on the shoulder of the road, with the exception of the 400-series highways.

Clark would like to see the Highway Traffic Act amended to allow side-by-sides, four-seat side-by-sides and two-up ATVs the same privileges as other ATVs. The motion for amendment was introduced last year, but Clark said he wanted to discuss it again before the Legislature recesses until October 20.

“It was a big issue locally. I received a lot of emails and telephone calls from local constituents expressing their support for the motion,” said Clark.

“I wanted to make sure that I got it back on the radar screen of the government before we adjourned.”

One of Wasaga Sand’s neighbours has put up 3 fun signs on their fence.

Their property sits on the left hand side of number 9 Hole where many stray golf shots end up in their backyard. This is one of the signs. It pictures their little Shih Tzu Dog and reads “ Warning: I can make it to the fence in 2.8 seconds.....Can You?”

The motion was previously supported by all three parties and had the support of Steven Del Duca, now the province’s Transportation Minister.

Greg Potvin, the president of the Thousand Islands ATV Club, said an amendment to the current regulations would make a huge difference for his organization and other organizations like it. “Our membership would go up, extremely,” Potvin said.

“We have 50 members right now and I know at least 30 to 40 people with side-bysides who haven’t been able to join.”

The trails the Thousand Islands ATV club travels has road connections that people with side-by-side and two-up ATV machines are not legally allowed to be on, under the current regulations.

Potvin said if the regulations are amended, the sport would become more familyfriendly.

“A lot of people are switching to the side-by-sides and two-ups because of family. If you have a side-by-side, the wife and you and the kids can spend more family time together,” he said.

Clark and Potvin both said ATV enthusiasts have an impact on the local tourism industry. As an example, Potvin said there have been two events already this summer that have brought more than 50 people to the area for an overnight stay.

Potvin said Ontario is one of the last provinces to change the regulations around ATVs. He said provinces like Quebec and New Brunswick have government-run trails while Newfoundland has trails throughout the entire province. The discussion around ATVs won’t happen provincially again until after October 20, when the Ontario legislature resumes after the summer recess. Clark said he hopes the government acts soon to amend the regulations, which would have a great effect on rural ridings like Leeds-Grenville. “This is a type of vehicle that is used widely,” Clark said.

“I think it just opens up the opportunities for us.”

By Jessica Brown, CSEP-CPT Question: When I do planks or push ups, my wrists begin to hurt and I have to take a break from these exercises. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain?

Answer: If you feel that you are performing these weight-bearing exercises correctly, and you have no previous injuries, the pain you are

feeling in your wrists could be due to lack of mobility and stability in your wrists. Wrist circles are an easy, yet effective exercise drill you can do to help improve the suppleness of your wrists.

Sit or stand in an upright position, with your upper arms close to the body. Bend your elbows until your forearms are parallel to the floor and hold your hands palms down with a loose fist.

Circle your wrists clockwise five times, and then circle your wrists five times counterclockwise.

Do this drill 2-3 times as a part of your warm up routine prior to beginning your weight-bearing exercises.

Question: For health reasons, I need to eliminate all dairy food from my diet and I am concerned that I will not be able to consume the daily calcium requirements. Leafy greens are known to be a good source of calcium, but can you provide me with other foods that I might not know about that are dairy-free calcium rich?

Answer: You can get all the calcium your body needs without having to consume dairy. The average Canadian adult should consume approximately 1000 mg of calcium per day.

Check out these surprisingly calcium rich foods to add to your weekly grocery list: Raw almonds pack quite a punch with 378 mg of calcium per cup. For a sweet treat, eat dried figs, which contain 274 mg of calcium per cup. If you like hummus, then try changing out chickpeas for white beans or black-eyed peas; bothlegumes pack approximately 170 mg of calcium per cup.

Wasaga Beach Welcomes Italian Youth!

It was great to see such a great turn out at the new River Docks Hotel Suites to welcome the visiting young Italian soccer players to Wasaga Beach this week!

Issie Seminara has been running the program that involves bringing teams from Italy and also sending teams to Italy, for twelve years.

Vyv Hardwick along with Lou Anne Pardon have been with the program for the past three years. The group has sent teams from Wasaga Beach to Italy to play in the by invitation only Agropoli Tournament.

Fundraising for the cost of the team uniforms and track suits continues through the summer months, right up until March when the group leaves for Italy.

The Wasaga Beach contingent has made many friends in Italy but none closer than those in Calabria from the town of San Giorgio Morgetto. This community has hosted our Wasaga Beach teams for the past three years.

All in Wasaga Beach are very pleased that the U14 Boys team from San Giorgio Morgetto have come to Canada for a twenty day period. They will play six exhibition games in Vaughn, Collingwood, Toronto, Guelph, Welland and Bolton.

In addition the team’s visit to Wasaga Beach, the excited and energetic group have already visited Canada’s Wonderland, Nancy Island and the Huron Village in

Midland. They will also visit the CN Tower and Niagara Falls.

With the help of Tanya Snell from What’s Up Hut, our visitors have had sponsors assist with the teams visit to Wasaga Beach.

The River Docks Hotel sponsored the boys for a trip to the Huron Village in Midland.

Alex and Sandy Smardenka hosted the team for dinner at Boston Pizza, Collingwood prior to their exhibition game Monday night against the Collingwood U14 Boys team.

Foodland in Wasaga Beach were kind enough to supply a travelling breakfast for the boys prior to their visit to St .

Marie Among the Hurons.

The Exhibition game Monday night in Collingwood was attended by a crowd of approximately three hundred people. Collingwood prevailed with a score of 4 – 2. Many new friends were made that evening. The Collingwood U14 Boys and U14 Girls team will be travelling to Italy in April 2015 to play in the Agropoli Tournament and will also visit the town of San Giorgio Morgetto.

Fundraising has already started and will continue right through until March. This trip to Italy will be the trip of a life time for these players.
