Chairmans Notes

Biggleswade FC v Tring Athletic 8/12/18 Good afternoon and welcome to Langford Road for our FA Vase Third Round replay against Tring Athletic. We were due to meet our visitors today in a league match, but after last Saturday’s titanic encounter in Hertfordshire, both teams are clashing again to see who will progress to the last 32 in the competition. All cup games are big occasions and this is particularly so today, with the top two in the SSMFL and another close and tense match in prospect – thank you all for coming to see it! We would like to extend a warm welcome to the players, management, supporters and committee of Tring Athletic– we hope you enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home afterwards. Welcome also to our match officials - please respect their role and the FA' s Respect and League’s Mind Your Language Campaigns, so that the match is enjoyable for all. Many thanks to our main sponsor Raymond Smith, for his renewed support this season and also for today’s match sponsor, Inskip & Davie Estate Agents. Last Saturday’s Third Round FA Vase match was a huge game for both sides, who will be pleased to have had this week to rest and recover from their exertions after 90 minutes and then extra time ended 1-1. We had an enthusiastic group of supporters amongst the crowd of over 200 and all of us connected with FC were so very proud of the excellent football the lads showed. We took the game to our opponents and showed incredible resilience and desire when playing for over an hour with 10 men. How much does it say about our young team that they were disappointed not to have won the game, even in those circumstances? More of the same will be needed today in undoubtedly another tough match, but no-one who was there last Saturday will easily forget the performance and attitude on display. We continue our series of testing league matches with two successive away Saturday games, starting next week at Hadley, followed by Biggleswade United – we’re then at home against Stotfold on Saturday 29th December, kick off 3pm. The Reserves are on a great winning run and are away to today’s cup opponents, Wilstead Reserves, next Saturday, kick off 2pm. The last home opportunity therefore to wish all our supporters a very MERRY CHRISTMAS from everyone at Biggleswade FC. One of our smart new scarves would make an excellent present and also please support our big Christmas Raffle, with many prizes on offer.

Enjoy the game. Jeremy Reynolds Chairman, Biggleswade FC

BIGGLESWADE FC CLUB HISTORY Biggleswade Football Club was formed in May 2016 from the very successful Biggleswade Town Under 18s side that competed in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League. 2016/17 - In our very first season in senior football, Biggleswade FC’s squad of young, talented players won the SSMFL Division One title. We finished with 99 points, six clear of Harpenden Town in second place and were duly promoted to the Premier Division - totally vindicating the decision to start off at Step 6 football. The new club made a huge impact both on and off the pitch and succeeded in doing things the right way. The players, under the astute management of Dave Northfield and Mark Inskip, deserved a huge amount of credit, not only for playing football as it should be played, but also for working and bonding so well together – a real team in every respect. Some of the performances were breath-taking and the 8-1 destruction of high-flying Langford at Christmas and the 4-2 away win at previously unbeaten Baldock Town were both particular highlights. As well as the successes in the league, the Club also had a thrilling FA Vase run, which saw us win two rounds, one against Takeley who were top of the Essex Senior League and the other away to Canning Town. The toughest possible draw came in the Second Round Proper where FC were handed an away draw at Peterborough Sports, who went on to win the United Counties League Premier Division by 15 points. However in going down 5-3 to Peterborough Sports, FC made a huge impression on their high-flying opponents and they were glowing in their praise of the football the youngsters had played. 2017/18 - The club made a solid start to life in the SSMFL Premier Division, at Christmas we were lying in 7th place with games in hand on some of the sides above us as well as progressing to the Semi-Finals of both the League Challenge Trophy and tonight’s Bedfordshire Senior Cup. However, the highlight of the campaign was our run to the 4th Round (last 32) of The Buildbase FA Vase. Following impressive wins against Northampton Sileby Rangers, Basildon United and Crawley Green, FC stunned much-fancied the eventual SSMFL Premier Division Champions Welwyn Garden City with a last-gasp extra-time penalty clinching a 2-1 win before unfortunately losing a tight affair away to the Hellenic League’s Thatcham Town, 2-1 in the 4th round. Thatcham Town went on to win both their league and also win The FA Vase itself at Wembley Stadium beating Stockton Town one nil in the final. We finished a very creditable 5th Place in our first season in the SSMFL Premier Division and expectations have risen for the forthcoming season.

Tring Athletic 1 - 1 Biggleswade FC AET Biggleswade FC showed incredible resolve to take fellow SSML high-flyers Tring Athletic to an FA Vase replay on Saturday after playing the last thirty minutes of normal time and all of extra time with ten men. This performance may not have had the style and class shown in dispatching Arlesey Town at Langford Road in the league the weekend before, but the heart, character and sheer determination in adversity made this every bit as good if not better. There had been a little doubt on the morning of the game as to whether this tie might go ahead due to a morning of pretty grim weather, but after passing a pitch inspection the weather brightened up ahead of this muchanticipated clash. The first flashpoint of the afternoon came as early as the fourth minute when FC's talismanic forward Tom Cookman caught Tring's Chris Vardy with a robust challenge. A number of the home players animatedly surrounded the referee wanting more than the inevitable yellow card he was going to receive. This meant that he would be banned for the next round if FC progressed. The opening fifteen minutes flew by with plenty of high intensity endeavour, but little in the way of goalmouth incident. As the clock ticked on to the quarter hour mark, two brilliant challenges denied Alex Marsh and Ryan Inskip following an eye-catching build-up. A few minutes later FC were appealing for a penalty as a low corner looped up accidently on to the arm of Carl Mensah in the referee's view and a brave Tring body got in the way of another Lee Northfield effort soon after. It took the home side until the midway point of the first half to make any real impression. They came into this tie on the back of three straight defeats and this would undoubtedly have contributed to their lack of confidence on the ball early on. Number 10 and skipper Kieran Turner has been a leading light for Tring this season and the hosts tried to get him on the ball at every opportunity. It was no surprise when he fashioned their first decent chance with a mazey run that brought a good save out of Dan Child. Five minutes later, Dan Child had to be at his best to pull off a full stretch save low to his right when Lee Stobbs let fly from just outside the penalty area. Ashton Campbell seized on the loose ball before feeding Turner who shot into the side-netting. Though dominating a large portion of the first half in terms of possession, Tring keeper Patrick Sinfield hadn't been called into action and one lapse in concentration allowed the home side to draw first blood in this titanic battle between the SSML Premier Division's top two. A short corner from Stobbs to Turner caught the FC rear-guard napping and a pinpoint cross to the far post from Turner found the towering leap of Mark Riddick, who guided a decent header past an exposed Dan Child. Both teams traded blows once more before the interval. Alex Marsh forced a comfortable save from Sinfield following a swift counter attack, whilst a deflected effort from Turner looped over the bar at the other end. Shooting down the slope at the Grassroots Stadium in the second half, FC came out with the bit between their teeth. Adam Hunt was unable to get forward as much as he would've liked in the first half, but he was raiding up the flank early in the second to provide the cross for a smart Alex Marsh near post header, which was tipped around the post by Sinfield.

FC deservedly levelled in the 53rd minute and it was a well-worked goal. Following a fine move the ball was worked into Alex Marsh in the box and his delightful little flick found Lee Northfield and he took a touch before arrowing a left-footed drive past Sinfield into the bottom right hand corner. It was his 8th of the season and his second big goal in as many games. The visitors now looked like taking the tie by the scruff of the neck, but they were stopped firmly in their tracks by a second yellow card for Tom Cookman just before the hour. It was another excellent move and as Cookman burst into the penalty area, it was almost like he was expecting a challenge, but he went down under a tackle that didn't come. Whilst he didn't appeal for anything, the referee was less than impressed and immediate reached for his book to dismiss Cookman for a second bookable offence. It could be argued that he was walking a tight rope from the moment he was booked early on, but FC now had a completely new challenge on their hands - just over a third of the game a man down. Tring began to move the ball around better than they had done the whole match, stretching FC and Turner had found himself in acres of room in the penalty area, but a brave stop from Child kept him at bay. The home side were sensing their opportunity to turn the screw and a drive from a tight angle from Ashton Campbell brought another excellent save from Dan Child. Arguably Tring's best chance of the second half came via a set-piece as Riddick climbed brilliantly to head a corner goal wards and somehow Campbell flicked the ball over from close range. FC were far from just trying to hold on though. Even with 10-men, they still continued to maintain belief and kept attacking with patience and quality where possible. They were almost rewarded when a short corner routine fell for McCafferty in the box, but he couldn't quite apply the finish as Tring scrambled it clear. Right at the end, both teams had chances to win it with Benat Pena, who had arguably his best game for the club and an absolute rock at the heart of the defence, heading over a decent chance at the far post from a corner, whilst Tommy Twelves stung the palms of Dan Child with virtually the last action of the 90 minutes. Extra-time would've been the last thing that FC would have wanted, but they continued to defy the odds and arguably looked the more likely to grab a winner. Pat McCafferty flashed a shot wide early into the first period, whilst Michael Simpson was alert to clear the danger following good work from Ashton Campbell. Alex Marsh had a couple of fine attempts in the second period, but the visitors very nearly won it with the last kick. Substitute Justin Leavers showed good determination to go clear of a Tring defender before shooting goal wards, but Sinfield did brilliantly to save with his feet. Honours ended even then and it was a mixture of relief and overwhelming pride that this group of players could show such courage in adversity. It can only stand them in good stead and increase confidence as they negotiate their way through this tough run of fixtures. Tring may see it as a missed opportunity, but undoubtedly both sides will welcome the chance to go again today when they meet for the replay at Langford Road - 3pm Kick Off.

The draw for the Fourth Round was made on Monday afternoon and the winner of this tie will host Stowmarket Town who play in the Eastern Counties League.

Evelyn Lintoft was the first Queens Park Rangers player to be picked for England in 1908; who was the next, 63 years later? Who were the first team still in existence to win FA Cup in 1884? Who were the first country to beat England after 1966 World Cup win? Which club won the Football League in 1929 and 1930 under different names? Wendy Toms was the first woman to do what?

Tring Athletic - A Brief History The club was formed in 1958 by a group of local men, the land at Miswell Lane and changing rooms costing ÂŁ2,000. During the 60's many trophies were won in The West Herts Leagues as an under 21 team, although they faced full adult sides. In 1971 whilst going through hard time the upper age limit was dropped and in 1987 and the side joined the South Midlands. The following year we undertook a ground share with Tring Town at Pendley. However we shortly returned to Miswell where the reserves had remained and gained promotion to the Senior Division. 1997 saw our first major trophy when we won the St. Mary's Cup and just missed out on promotion as we repeated the following two years. We did win the Senior Div. Cup and The St.Mary's again 1999/2000 proved to be a season to remember. A new club extension of ÂŁ50K was celebrated by winning the league and reaching 5 finals. We won 3 lost 1 and the last was unable to be completed. We went on to win 12 major trophies in 7 years. 2004-We entered a ground share with Tring Town and raised the funds required to build the new facilities we enjoy now. We were then able to enter the National cups for the first time and have enjoyed success in these reaching the last 16 of the Vase this year.

We have still retained our cup tradition and have won the Herts Charity Shield 3 times and the St. Mary's on six occasion. Our teams have increased over the years and we now have 4 adult mens sides playing on Saturday's and a midweek youth side. All have had their successes and the Reserves now play at a high level in The Suburban Premier League. Last season the First finished 5th their second highest ever position in The Spartan South Midland Premier Division. They won The St. Mary's Cup defeating Kings Langley in the final 1-0. They also reached The Herts Charity Shield Final losing in the last few minutes. The reserves finished mid table in the Suburban Premier Division and reached The Plate final. The A Team finished runners up in The West Herts Premier division and the B Team won Division 2 and also The Stanley Rous Trophy. 2017/18,. Saw us set a club record in reaching the last 16 of The FA Vase losing by the odd goal to Melksham in front of a crowd over 1,200. The league position was disappointing. Our A Team had a great season winning the league and cup without losing a game. The only game they did lose was the final of the Herts Junior Cup.

2018/2019 Biggleswade FC Team Photo

Biggleswade FC 4 - 1 Arlesey Town Biggleswade FC were at their imperious best as they came from behind at the break to storm back to the summit of the SSML Premier Division table with a 4-1 victory against fellow highflyers Arlesey Town. It was a frenetic opening between two in-form sides at Langford Road. A win for Arlesey would've taken them level on points with FC albeit having played a game more and there was little to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges. The visitors hadn't really troubled FC until their talismanic forward Lorrell Smith came to life on 8 minutes. A loose pass from the home side near the halfway line saw possession turned over and the ball was played in to the feet of Smith with his back to goal and he guided a lovely low finish past Tompkins and into the bottom right hand corner. Going behind is hardly alien territory to FC this season and despite no immediate response, they still looked unflustered by the early set back. Tom Cookman and Ryan Inskip had shots well-blocked before Biggleswade carved their opponents open with their best chance of the half on 34 minutes. Lee Northfield and Alex Marsh combined to release Tom Cookman in behind in an inside right position. He did everything right, lashing a well-struck effort across the keeper but Robbie Ponting's outstretched leg prevented the equaliser. Biggleswade went into the break behind for the fifth time in the league this season, but despite not having too many clear chances, there always seemed that belief that they could turn things around in the second half. Right from the kick off the intensity and quality was breath-taking. A swift passage of play gave Cookman a sighter of goal within seconds, but his attempted curled finish into the corner was well parried by Ponting. Two minutes later FC were level as Northfield released Alex Marsh with a pass down the FC left and Marsh got his head up and picked out Northfield who had continued his run to the edge of the penalty area and delivered a brilliant finish into the top right hand corner. The writing was on the wall as Biggleswade poured forward with wave after wave of attacking intent. The turnaround was complete on 53 minutes and it was another cracker. Northfield again produced a lovely through ball to Cookman. The forward had already seen the flying Adam Hunt over his shoulder and his little flick was perfect for Hunt to deliver first time and top scorer Alex Marsh gobbled up the opportunity with a close range finish. It was a eye-catching way to chalk up FC's 50th league goal of the campaign. The home side then had a number of guilt-edged chances to seal the points. Another terrific run from McCafferty saw his impudent attempted lob fall just the wrong side of the post. Then Northfield had a shot well-blocked following some great work from substitute Justin Leavers before Ryan Inskip tested the reflexes of Ponting once more with the follow-up. Ponting was forced to scramble another Leavers effort behind before the points clinching third finally arrived on 82 minutes, but it was a goal worth waiting for. Ryan Inskip timed his run to perfection to spring the offside trap and Northfield picked him out an absolute treat with another dream through ball. Inskip took a touch before ruthlessly smashing the ball past Ponting for his 8th goal of the season. It was Inskip's turn to be provider soon after when he released Adam Hunt with another pass from the top drawer. Hunt's first time cross left Leavers with the goal at his mercy, but somehow Ponting kept the ball out from point blank range. The big forward wasn't to be denied though and he expertly dispatched an opportunity ten times as difficult as the chance he had passed up moments earlier. Northfield breached the creaking Arlesey back line once more with a through pass to Alex Marsh. Ponting had spotted the danger and rushed from his line. It looked like he handled it as he diverted the ball away from Marsh, but it went straight to Leavers who swept an excellent first time finish into the unguarded net from all of 30 yards. It was the icing on the cake of what was an incredible second half performance. It really was a joy to watch.

Biggleswade FC 4 - 1 Harpenden Town FC Biggleswade FC continued their imperious league form with a 4-1 win over Harpenden Town at Langford Road on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Alex Marsh, Mat Richardson, Tom Cookman and Ryan Inskip kept FC hot on the heels of leaders Tring Athletic on an afternoon where all of the division’s top six picked up maximum points. Biggleswade FC dominated the early possession but it took until the 18th minute to ask questions of the visiting keeper Carl Tasker. He made a smart stop diving to his right to deny Alex Marsh’s left-footed strike from the edge of the box, before Lee Northfield forced him in to another block from a tight angle. Chances were at a premium for much of the opening 20 minutes, but cracks started to appear in the Harpenden rearguard as Lee Northfield squandered a 3-on-1 scenario after initially turning smartly and bursting towards goal. Then Alex Marsh’s cross was just a tad too high for the unmarked Northfield who headed over from 12 yards and then Tom Cookman hit the top of the bar when he looped a well-crafted shot on the turn, but it just had too much on it to find the top corner. Cookman’s attacking threat was proving a real handful for the visitors, so it was no surprise that he was involved in the opening goal when it finally arrived on 40 minutes. Cookman was fouled just before the incident that led to the penalty, but the official Russell Jones clearly thought the Harpenden player had got the ball as he subsequently awarded a corner that wasn’t. The initial ball in from Inskip was dealt with, but Cookman’s desire to get on the loose ball saw him clumsily brought down in an area of the box where a tackle didn’t really need to be made. He was near the byline and going away from goal, but despite the visiting protests - this time referee Jones was spot on with his decision. Alex Marsh took responsibility and didn’t pass up the opportunity to move out on his own at the top of the FC goal scoring chart with his 16th of the season. Cookman was in the clear moments later following a lovely Inskip through ball, but this time the Town defence was equal to it. Chances were few and far between for a defensive visiting side at the other end, but FC were grateful for an offside flag just before half time when Harpenden played a decent ball in behind. There was still time before the whistle for the interval for FC to rattle the frame of the goal for a second time. Alex Marsh benefited from a defensive slip, cutting in from the left going past a couple of other challenges before crashing off the cross bar. You did wonder if FC’s slender one-goal lead after dominating the first half may come back to bite them and it very nearly did as Harpenden started the second period with more attacking intent. On a couple of occasions Archie McClelland ran off the shoulder of the FC defenders to fashion shooting opportunities, but fortunately for the hosts Ross Tompkins wasn’t called into action. FC soon found their rhythm once more though and they doubled their lead in some style 11 minutes into the second half. Alex Marsh turned inside with his back to goal and played the ball into the path of an unmarked Mat Richardson. After assessing his options and facing no immediate attempt to close him down, Richardson let fly with the sweetest of strikes that beat Tasker all ends up from 25 yards. This young lad really is growing in stature with every passing game. Two quickly became three on 59 minutes. A deflected Pat McCafferty through ball fell perfectly for Cookman and the talismanic forward kept a cool head to round Tasker and slide home his 7th goal of the campaign.

You feared for the visitors now as it started to look like it was a case of how many FC would get, but full credit to them for reducing the arrears four minutes later. Alex Marsh in a similar position to the second goal tried to lift his pass over a Town player, but it was intercepted and the visitors quickly broke. Within moments Dan Stewart was in on goal and he guided a smart finish past Tompkins. The game then got a little scrappy for a tenminute spell, with FC having to cope with the loss of Adam Hunt who had pulled up down the right hand side. His more-than-able replacement Michael Simpson was soon raiding and providing a decent attacking outlet. It was from the substitute that FC’s points-clinching fourth goal arrived. It was a ball in of real quality from Simpson and Ryan Inskip marked his 100th appearance in an FC shirt with an excellently-taken header into the bottom left-hand corner.one sour note to what was a good win for the hosts was losing Conor Inskip to injury before the end. The midfielder has just returned to the squad after a long spell out and after coming on as substitute on the hour, he was forced to depart four minutes from time with an ankle problem. We hope it is not too serious.
