CHAIRMAN’S NOTES | Welcome to Langford Road Biggleswade FC v Kidlington FC

Kidlington.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Yvette Brewer Stadium at Langford Road for our Pitching In Southern League Central Division One match against

A warm welcome to our visitors who have made the long trip from Oxfordshire and we hope that their players, management, officials and supporters enjoy their time with us and have a safe journey home after the game. We know that every match in this league is a test and our visitors, arriving on the back of a fine away win on Tuesday evening, will be just that! With both teams looking for their second league win of the season, an intriguing and competitive match is in store and we are glad that you are joining us this afternoon to give your support. For your safety and to ensure that we can continue to admit spectators, we ask you to please follow all our COVID safe protocols and systems – specifically keeping to social distancing and wearing a mask if you are in the clubhouse or the main stand. Everyone at the club is working very hard to continue to get football back to normal and your co-operation and understanding are greatly appreciated - please do ask any of the committee or our volunteers if you have questions about the systems we have in place. Welcome also to our match officials this afternoon - please respect their role and the FA’ s Respect Campaign, so that the match is enjoyable for all. Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to today’s match, our Treasurer Fay Northfield and her fantastic dog grooming business Fay’s Furry Friends. Do you have any likely customers? If so, speak to Fay today!

exiting two cup competitions and suffering two successive league defeats. Fine margins indeed, for there were things in every one of those games which could have turned in our favour and made all the difference and injuries have also taken their toll. But… no excuses here and our pride at what our players are doing and how they play the game burns as brightly as ever – perhaps even more so as we think of the bigger picture. Such are the high standards we set ourselves, we are disappointed if we don’t win every game playing with our trademark style – and all this with our young lads excelling themselves in such competitive football at the highest level they have ever been at and getting there in a very short period of time! This is a time to enjoy and savour every single moment of the wonderful football we are watching. Congratulations and well done to our influential Captain, Tom Coles, who recently achieved his 100th appearance for FC and who will be presented with his commemorative cap today. Phil’s young Reserves also continue their positive start to the season and it has been great to watch many of their recent matches and see how they are progressing. Thank you for coming today and for your great support. Looking ahead, we are next away to Coleshill on Monday 19th October and then at home two weeks today to high flying Aylesbury. Another date for your diary is Saturday 7th November, when we will be running a supporters coach to title favourites Halesowen, in a huge match for us. Enjoy the game and come on FC!

Kidlington FC Biggleswade FC v Kidlington FC

Kidlington FC was founded in 1909 and played local village football where rivalry was so keen that players had to prove they were residents of the village for whom they played. In 1945, Kidlington moved from village football to play in the Oxford City Junior League, with a good deal of success in both league and cup. By 1951 the Oxfordshire Senior League was entered, where stronger competition was provided by the likes of Witney Town, Morris Motors, Pressed Steel and Thame United. In 1953 The Hellenic League was formed ,and the Oxon Senior League immediately lost some of its stronger clubs to the new league. Kidlington won the Senior League title that next season, joining the new league in 1954. Early days in the Hellenic League showed quite clearly the difference in standard. Kidlington however, maintained a Premier Division place for a time, but spent most of the 60’s in Division One. The 70’s started with ‘The Greens’ winning the County Intermediate Cup Final, along with two further County final appearances in that decade, (both epic battles against a very talented Peppard side, who beat us on both occasions). In 1976-77 a squad of good young players produced what was

Kidlington’s best ever run in an FA competition. The team played every round bar one away from home, when Kidlington reached the last 16 in the FA Vase, eventually bowing out to Gosport Borough. The nucleus of this side eventually gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1979-80. The 80’s were pretty uneventful and saw Kidlington return to Division One of the Hellenic. The early 90’s were steady and in season 1994-95 Martin Bakers’ Reserves side did the League/Cup double bringing some long awaited silverware back to the club. An upturn in the first team fortunes occurred after Karl Grossmann was appointed manager, he assembled a formidable tough tackling side, finishing in the top 6 of Division One in four successive seasons. The new millennium brought with it a major overhaul to the committee and a new Chairman in Geoff Talboys. In 200405, under the guidance of ex-player Kevin Walton, the first team finished in third place and with it achieved promotion back into the Hellenic Premier Division. With promotion came a struggle with the considerable difference in the standard of football compared to Division One, losing the first twelve games. The season eventually petered out in frustration and the team finished in a relegation position … however a national non-

league restructure saved them from the dreaded drop. In 2007 - 2008, first team silverware arrived at Yarnton Road for the 1st time in over 30 years when Kidlington won the Floodlit Trophy under the guidance of manager Paul Lee. There were additional honours that season with the Reserves, winning Reserve Division One for a second consecutive season, the Youth team winning the Oxfordshire U18 Youth Cup and Kidlington Veterans retaining their Veteran League crown. Season 2008-09 was again a good one for all our teams. Our 1st Team finished in a very respectable 9th position in the league and had some good cup runs, the Reserves finished 3rd in their league but unfortunately yet again were runners up in the Oxfordshire Intermediate Cup final. In 2009-10 came a new Chairman, Lloyd

Wray, and a new management team. Ex-player Gordon Geary was recruited to look after 1st team affairs and Barry Hiles to run the Reserve team. Season 2010-11 saw the club, under the same management structure, achieve its most successful season ever; finishing 7th in the Premier League, and a superb effort by all saw us play a very strong Oxford United team at the Kassam Stadium in the Final of the Oxfordshire Senior, where unfortunately we lost. We did win some silverware though, beating Purton 3-0 in the final of the Supplementary Cup. In December 2011, Gordon and his backroom staff of Keith Appleton, Paul Harwood and Barry Hiles decided they had taken the club as far as they could and stepped back from managing the Club. Players Danny Leggett and Christian Perkins stepped forward to guide the club through until the end

of the season. That season was very frustrating, but owing to some decent early league results the club maintained its Hellenic Premier Division status. In 2012/13 a new first team manager, ex Oxford United striker Paul Berry, was installed. However, he resigned after only three matches to pursue alternative opportunities. Gordon Geary and his previous backroom staff were persuaded to come out of retirement and were re-appointed during the second week of the season. They managed to assemble a squad with the ability to avoid the dreaded drop, finishing in 13th place. Having taken over in the crisis, Geary and his management team resigned again, having “got the job done of avoiding relegation. During the summer break, and in readiness for season 2013-14, the club installed Martin Wilkinson as 1st team manager and we finished 6th in the league, making club history and also reaching the Senior Cup Final again after beating Oxford United in the semis. Unfortunately we lost again, this time to Ardley United. Season 2014-15 saw Martin Wilkinson again at the helm, assisted by Paul Harwood, and the team finished in their highest ever league position of 4th place. For the first time the club also ran a Ladies Team who entered into the

Thames Valley Ladies League. Season 2015-16 was a dream come true for everyone at KFC, with Wilkinson and his team of Paul Harwood, Julian McCalmon and Jermaine McSporran, leading our 1st team to the Hellenic League Premier Division title and with it promotion to the Southern League. We also had our best ever runs in both the FA Vase where we reached the last 8, bowing out to Bowers & Pitsea after a replay and had a very healthy run in the FA Cup, losing eventually to Conference side Gloucester City. Truly our best ever season by some margin. For season 2016--17 Wilkinson led the side as we embarked on our 1st season at level 4 of the football pyramid in the Evo-Stik League South Division One Central, but due to work commitments resigned after the first month of the season. Jermaine McSporran took over as caretaker manager until the club were able to appoint Julian McCalmon as our new 1st team manager, with McSporran and Paul Harwood as his assistants. The team had a good season at this higher level and eventually finished in mid-table. Our reserves with Nick East as Manager, had a great season winning the Reserve Challenge Cup and finishing as runners up in the Hellenic League Division 2 West. Due to the geographical implications from promotion/relegation, for season

2017-18 we were transferred across to the Evo-Stik League South West. The club retained the services of McCalmon as manager and he appointed Henry Owen as his assistant. Our reserve team assumed senior status with promotion to Uhlsport Hellenic Division One West. They were also re-branded to the “Development Team “ McCalmon resigned at the end of the 17-18 season and unfortunately the majority of the previous season’s squad also left the club. Ady Fuller was appointed as 1st Team Manager and had to form a completely new squad ahead of season 2018-19. Due to a F.A. national restructure we transferred to Evo-Stik League South Division One Central. Nick East continued as manager of our Development Team in Hellenic One West.

Ady Fuller resigned his position in mid-October and we reinstalled Julian McCalmon with Joe Davies & Elliot Osborne-Ricketts as his assistants and we avoided relegation on the last day of the season. McCalmon resigned again in January 2020 and was replaced by Ben Sadler, assisted by Paul Braithwaite. The pair led Wantage Town to promotion as Hellenic League Champions in 2019. After a positive start to this season it was curtailed for everyone by Covid 19, with the same management structure we hope to be able to push on for the 2020-21 season….

Biggleswade FC 0 - 2 Bedford Town Second half goals from Craig MackailSmith and Ross Watson helped Bedford Town condemn Biggleswade FC to their first home defeat of the season at The Yvette Brewer Stadium on Tuesday night.

Since promotion to the Southern League, meetings with The Eagles have in the main been very entertaining affairs and this one looked to be no different in a frenetic flurry of end-toend action in the first ten minutes.

After all the drama and excitement of Saturday’s FA Cup tie, this muchanticipated local derby turned into a damp squib as the more-experienced Eagles kept their young hosts at arms length all night and in doing so secured their first league win of the campaign in front of just over 200 spectators.

A swift Eagles counter led by exPeterborough and Brighton hitman Mackail-Smith saw him work the ball into the feet of Connor Tomlinson, who cut in and forced a brave block from Adam Hunt.

There was doubt leading up to this clash as to whether it might fall foul to the deluge that ensued a few hours before kick off, but full credit to the ground staff who had the Langford Road pitch in pristine condition. Managers Northfield and Inskip made two enforced changes to their starting lineup at Canvey Island. Nathan George came in for Joe Gauge, who was a late withdrawal as a precaution and Tom Cookman started his first FC game in almost a year in place of Alan Fleming who picked up a head injury at the weekend.

FC’s right back was then causing problems offensively when he got on the end of a smart pass from Sam Johnson to burst into the penalty area. The angle was slightly against him, but he still forced a save out of the diving Jamie Greygoose with a zipping low drive. The hosts should’ve opened their account for the evening on six minutes when Hunt ran down the byline after some fine work on the flank once more. This time he picked out Sam Johnson with the goal at his mercy, but the forward couldn’t apply the finishing touch from a couple of yards out. The visitors had a penalty appeal turned down as the half approached its midway point. Left back Will

Summerfield went down in the box after Tyler Josephs came to narrow the angle from a Rene Howe pass. The referee blew his whistle, but to the astonishment of the travelling contingent, he booked the Bedford player for simulation. Summerfield made amends for his alleged act with a fine strike from distance moments later, which brought a terrific diving stop from Tyler Josephs, who tipped the ball behind for a Bedford corner. The Eagles were now starting to take control of the game, but their dominance until this point didn’t yield any goals with Howe the latest to spurn an opportunity, when he half-volleyed a teasing Mackail-Smith cross over the FC crossbar. The latter went close himself just before the break curling just wide of the upright as the hosts continued to be penned back. The interval did little to stem the flow of this encounter as Bedford continued to dictate the game into the second period. Summerfield again was proving a willing outlet up the left flank and it was his efforts that fashioned an opening for Tomlinson to shoot goalwards and Josephs was again at his best to pull off a good save. The pressure finally told on the hour mark and although it was little more than they deserved, there was an element of fortune to it. Adam Hunt appeared to be impeded by Callum Donnelly in his own half, but play was waved on and Summerfield was able to break into the area vacated by the FC right-back. Summerfield ran into the left-side of the box, fizzed in a low cross and as Josephs parried, the loose ball

cannoned in off Mackail-Smith from point blank range to open his account for his new club. Bedford doubled their advantage ten minutes later, this time from a setpiece. Summerfield was the provider once more, delivering a free-kick from the left-hand side and Eagles skipper Ross Watson was on hand to nip in untracked and turn home into the right hand corner to the delight of the strong travelling support. Apart from one decent low cross from Mackail-Smith which was just too long for a Bedford substitute, the visitors seemed content with their night’s work and were able to play out the rest of the game without too much trouble. Whether the exerts of Saturday’s cup tie had an effect on this FC performance I’m not sure, but apart from the first ten minutes when we looked quite dangerous, we looked weary and unable to make too much of an impression. It has been a tough few games for us and the injuries we’ve picked up have certainly not helped our cause, but I’m sure the lads will dust themselves down and get through this tricky little run after an initial good start. We are at home again on Saturday when Kidlington visit Langford Road (3pm KO). They will be full of confidence after picking up their first league win in midweek, so it’s set up to be another interesting afternoon. Grab your tickets for that match here -

36. (13,295) (3,651st ‘new’ ground) Saturday 19th September 2020. Cropredy 2 Yarnton 2 (Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division) att 30 approx. Today, after a slow drive I arrived in Cropredy about two hours later. This is a clean and pleasant village a view miles north of Banbury and not too far from ‘Midsummer Murders’ land. No dead bodies here though. Nonetheless Cropredy is famous as it’s where Fairport Convention live. They are apparently a rock band and as such they play one concert a year (but not this year) at the sports complex, which houses two cricket pitches and a football pitch. It seems that they all do rather well out of their concert hire fee. There are two pavilions, one is for one of the cricket pitches and is built on stilts and the other is part cricket and part football, but not open today until the football had finished. They also have two stands, of sorts, both three seaters, or double that if you are prepared to sit on the narrow foot rest. They are really the former portable mobile dugouts. So, I plonked myself in one of these and true to form my view was soon blocked by three men who although they could have stood anywhere, decided to stand in front of where I was sitting. This was a warm sunny day and the ‘crowd’ socially distanced around the pitch, railed off on two sides and wooden fenced off on the other two sides. The hosts looked to be a useful, but aging side and they went a goal down on 9 minutes. But they then equalised immediately. Yarnton regained the lead on 24 minutes before the hosts scored what would be the final goal on 60 minutes, to eventually bring to a close a friction free relaxing afternoon, both on and off the pitch.

The government initially planned for the return of some spectators to sports venues in England from October 1, only for the plans to be scrapped as coronavirus cases began to rise. “We have to acknowledge that the spread of the virus is now affecting our ability to reopen business conferences, exhibitions and large sporting events,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at the time. “So we will not be able to do this from October 1 and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs which are the life and soul of our communities, and my right honourable friends the Chancellor and the Culture Secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them.”

The financial impact of no supporters being allowed through the turnstiles in the Premier League and EFL is having a major impact on the world of sport, with the FA warning in September that the government’s measures would have a ‘huge impact’ on football. A limited number of sports fans had previously been allowed into test events, including some days of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible. Spectators also attended the first day of the St Leger horse racing meeting at Doncaster but the remaining three days of the festival took place behind closed doors. Further test events, including a Vitality Blast T20 match at Yorkshire’s Headingley Stadium and Cambridge United’s League Two game with Carlisle, were also scrapped. 8

NON LEAGUE NEWS

HERE WE go again. This week, Boris Johnson urged people to go back to the cinemas following the sad decision of Cineworld to temporarily close its 127 theatres across the UK, affecting 45,000 jobs. It comes at the end of a damning week for the film industry with the launch of the forthcoming James Bond film No Time To Die being put back to 2021. Sadly, it’s an all-too familiar story in these strange Covid times, bearing a striking comparison to the football industry, which too has been left to pick up the pieces from the effects of the global pandemic. So, the question remains then Boris, if you are pleading with people to go back to watching films in the cinema - a small, enclosed arena with very little room for manoeuvre or ventilation – then why can’t fans return to football in a much larger, outdoor, sociallydistanced environment? Last Saturday, 15 Vue Cinemas – Cineworld’s main market rival – showed live Premier League matches, well attended by fans. How can you watch football in a cinema but not an open-air stadium? That’s madness. Quite frankly, I’m amazed – and mightily relieved - that more proud, well-established football clubs haven’t fallen foul to these testing Covid times and credit for that lies with the people who work tirelessly – usually without financial reward – to keep our clubs alive. But, with a second Coronavirus wave threatening to kick in and tougher restrictions gradually being put in place, there comes a point when something has to give, as Cineworld have shown. Last week’s £10m Government bailout to the National League at least papers over the cracks for a few months but, at the time of

writing this, clubs are still waiting for news of their reimbursements almost a week on and with their season already underway. Indeed, poor communication throughout has been a huge issue during this uncertain summer and that’s something that needs to be addressed in any future Covid post mortem. Personally, I’m still dismayed by a lack of assistance, and greed sometimes, of the mega-rich Premier League and its member clubs during this crisis. No fewer than six players in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this week’s friendly with Wales and Nations League games against Belgium and Denmark boast a Non-League background. Doesn’t that show that football at this level is impacting higher up the Pyramid? In the week when Macclesfield Town were wound up by the High Court for debts totalling £500,000, Chelsea were spending £22 million for a replacement goalkeeper. A couple of weeks later, Arsenal then opted to severely damage their once proud community ties by dumping its much-loved mascot Gunnersaurus - for the sake of £120-a-week before then spending £45 million on Thomas Partey. Obviously, I’m not suggesting bailouts of those proportions but what a gesture it would be from the 20 Premier League clubs if they put aside, say, £1 million each, to strengthen their community ties when it is needed most and keep their local clubs alive? Cineworld’s demise is a worrying turn of events for the entertainment industry, of which sport plays a significant part. Agreed, Boris, let us support our cinemas, theatres and music venues – socially distanced, of course – but how about including football stadiums in that too?

SECRETARY CORNER By Lee Rusbridge

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Langford Road for this Pitching In Southern League Division One Central fixture between Biggleswade FC and Kidlington. On behalf of the club, I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of our Oxfordshire opponents. We hope you have a pleasant visit and whilst the new guidelines in place are far from ideal, we hope you will work with us in ensuring we keep everyone safe during your short stay with us. After starting the season with three wins and bags of optimism, things seem to have nose-dived a little for us in the past fortnight with four games and no victories. Whilst it is never nice being on a difficult run, sometimes you have to take a step back to get some balanced perspective on where we are as a football club. I, as much as anyone, get frustrated when we don’t play the attractive, freeflowing football that we have become accustomed to and synonymous for, but we also have to accept that after being the best team at both Step Six and Step Five, the disparity between the clubs at Step Four is far bigger. We are just over four years old as a club and some of the sides we’ve been beaten by since the season started are household names in non-league circles. Histon and Canvey Island were National

League clubs in the not too distant past, Bedford Town - Conference South at one stage, Evesham United - Step Three. Being disappointed to lose to any of these clubs when your own wasn’t even in existence five years ago, seems bonkers to say the least but the appetite at this club to compete with such established outfits is admirable. We do however, need to keep that appetite and winning mentality in perspective when things don’t quite go as we want them to. We need to enjoy those highs when they come like the victories over Corby Town et al, but also not get too despondent when we go on a run of three or four games without a win like we find ourselves on currently. With the budgets available to the Halesowens, Corbys and Bedford Towns of this world, any points we take from them should be taken as a bonus. Our first objective when we were promoted to this division last season was to be competitive and even though we haven’t won for four games now, we have certainly been that. We have been unlucky with injuries so far this season and whilst we shouldn’t use it as an excuse, it has undoubtedly played its part. We have also had a number of additions to the squad arrive late in pre-season, so players will take time to gel. Once we get our absentees fit, I have no doubt results will pick up and I also think we have a stronger and more talented squad all round than we did this time last year, so its far from doom and gloom and hopefully we can draw a line under recent results and get back to winning ways today.

www.biggleswadefc.co.uk | BiggleswadeFC@outlook.com

Kidlington visit us this afternoon on the back of their first league win at Didcot in midweek and after also holding a free-scoring Halesowen to a 1-1 draw recently, they won’t be short of confidence making the trip to Bedfordshire this afternoon. We enjoyed a couple of good battles with our opponents last season, drawing 1-1 at Yarnton Road with Lawrie Marsh on target and then winning the return 2-1 in January with Ryan Inskip and Tom Coles on the scoresheet for us. Beyond today’s game, our exit from the FA Trophy means we are not back in action until a week on Monday (19th Oct), when we make the long away trip to Coleshill Town (7.45pm KO). Their ground is just off Junction 4 of the M6 (Packington Ln, Coleshill, Birmingham B46 3JE) if you wish to join us. We are next at home two weeks today when high-flying Aylesbury United visit The Yvette Brewer Stadium (3pm KO) in what will be another tough test. Tickets for that game will be on sale via our online platform - https://biggleswadefc. ktckts.com/ soon, so keep an eye out for those. As always, please purchase in advance where possible to speed up your entry at the turnstile. If you are planning on attending most home games this season, why not consider purchasing a season ticket? We’ve already sold almost double the

amount we did last term, so they are clearly proving popular since their introduction. You can also purchase these using the link above. As the weather starts to turn and the emperatures plummet, you might want to consider investing in some winter warmers. The club are offering bobble hats and scarves via the Merchandise section of our ticketing site. We normally always have a stock on matchdays too, so please see a committee member if you wish to purchase these items. As mentioned in the previous programme, we are on the hunt for player sponsors. If you fancy sponsoring one of the lads for the season, please get in touch. It is £50 and you will get your name or company details listed in the programme and on the player profile on our website. We are just in the process of adding these to our online ticketing site, so you will shortly be able to pay for this online too. Finally, I just want to thank you all for coming out today. Your support is hugely appreciated and hopefully both teams can serve you up a good spectacle this afternoon. Lee Rusbridge, Football Secretary

Biggleswade FC Lotto

UB OT BALL CL

We would like all members of the club as well as all our friends and supporters to subscribe to our Lotto scheme which started in September 2018, which will help us raise the funds needed to assist with the running of YOUR local football club. The Club has already made great strides since its inception – reaching the eighth tier of English Football and we are now looking to raise further funds to help us to provide and maintain football at this level both now with the objective of even higher levels in the future and this cannot happen without your support. When you join "Biggleswade FC Lotto", you will be allocated a "Lotto Number", which will be yours for the duration of the time you are a member of the draw. There will be a monthly prize draw as well as an "Annual Super Prize Draw" to be drawn in December of each year. The draws will involve an independent drawmaster randomly drawing numbers to pay out cash prizes. This will be undertaken at a designated home match each month, which will be detailed on the club website/social media channels. Entry into the draw is only £5.00 per month, which equates to just over £1 a week. This relatively small contribution can make a big difference to your local club and also give you a chance of winning a cash prize for your valued efforts! Prize amounts will be decided based on the number of entries to the draw, but the monthly payout will be a guaranteed percentage of the total lottery fund (20% for first prize, 10% for second prize and 5% for third prize).

For 100 members the monthly prizes would be: First Prize - £100.00* Runner up - £50.00* Third prize - £25.00* For the Annual Super Prize Draw prizes will be at least doubled: First Prize - £200.00* Runner Up - £100.00* Third Prize - £50.00* * above prize totals for indication purposes only To make collection simple we would ask that you set up a standing order online (if you have internet banking facilities). Please email us for our bank details at BiggleswadeFC@outlook.com and then set up a monthly standing order for £5 (one ball), £10 (two balls) etc etc. If you don't have internet banking facilities, you would need to complete a standing order form (again available from us via email) and return it to your bank for processing. You can also pay by cash or cheque, but there is a minimum payment of £60.00 for twelve months at a time for this option. On completion of your subscription using one of the above methods, we would ask that you email the club (as above) with the following information: Your Name, Mobile Number and Email Address so we can notify you that your first payment has arrived successfully, the number of your Lotto Ball(s) in the draw and also to tell you when you’ve won any cash prizes. All winners will be notified by email (or text if preferred) and a list of all winners will be posted on the website following each draw. Should you require any additional information or assistance, please contact us at BiggleswadeFC@outlook.com or call/text Club Secretary Lee Rusbridge on 07981 789037. Many thanks in advance for your support, Biggleswade FC Committee
