-Thank You -

As most of us are in the midst of fall work, we here at Big Country Genetics would like to take the time to express our utmost appreciation and gratitude to our loyal customers. Despite the havoc and chaos that COVID-19 displayed earlier this spring, you showed up and supported our sale and we simply cannot thank you enough!

The sale was an utter success and we were genuinely humbled to have the ability to supply so many commercial and seedstock producers with the genetics needed to move forward with their individual programs. We hope and pray that your summer went well and that the bulls surpassed all of your expectations. We believe it is our

responsibility to ensure that our genetics create success within each and every one of your operations. Thank you for your confidence in our program, and we look forward to working with you in the near future! God Bless, Jimmy & ShayLe Stewart

Big Country Genetics / XL Ranch

Big Country Genetics & XL Ranch have a simple and direct mission: to produce sensible cattle that generate profits for the operation, its customers and the greater beef industry. Although the mission is short and to the point, achieving the goal is far from simple. Almost every seedstock provider will tell you that they are doing exactly this; however, it takes a deep discerning look to truly predict profitability through genetics! The cattle industry is incredibly diverse and unpredictable. As cattlemen and women, we are always making predictions on when to market our calves, assessing which supplements to feed and determining what genetic line will increase ranch profitability the most. We try our best, but sometimes we simply make the wrong decision and fall short. These failures are alright

so long as we learn from them; and, make measured corrections. Our belief is that there is no perfect cow, but there are profitable cattle and unprofitable cattle. With that being said, we aren’t interested in the notion of falling in love with certain cattle. Instead, we like to set bench marks and the cattle that meet these marks get to remain within the operation, and cattle that don’t simply fall out. THE BENCH MARKS:

1) Fertility & Mothering Ability: Our cattle are expected to calve on their own, unassisted and outside – period. Every bull we sell and every heifer we keep had a mother that did exactly that, every year. As we grow, we do selectively purchase some early calving heifers that will have their first calf in a shed if needed. All home raised heifers; however, calve just

like our mature cows and are checked once a day while calving outside. We are also excited to share that we have implemented a 45-day calving window this year. This is extremely significant as we do not prop our cattle up in the winter with feed and supplementation. Our cattle are expected graze the majority of the year with only a Riomax tub as a supplement. Due to grass restrictions we do feed some hay, however this is fed as long stem hay and absolutely no feed additives are added to the ration. This time of the year you often hear producers bragging about their weaning weights and cowherd breed up. Both of these things generate income and profits; however, we rarely hear producers talking about the cost they incurred to achieve these high breed ups and big calves. Remember for every pound gained and ev-

ery cow bred, there was also a cost. Sometimes those cattle weaning 700 steers are less profitable than the cattle weaning 500 steers. 2) Type & Kind: When selecting a bull to use in our herd, our first consideration if his phenotype. Our primary focus is on a moderate framed, big bodied individual with the right leg structure and good feet. We like early maturing cattle whose growth curve is highest between birth and weaning. We find that higher growth cattle tend to fall out due to a lack of fleshing ability. With that being said; we like everyone else, like to have soggy calves at weaning. It’s simply that earlier maturing cattle lend to higher weaning weights while maintaining a moderate mature cow. 3) EPD’s & Genomics: EPD’s are one of the most profitable tools cattlemen have to make economically pertinent discussions.

EPD’s are the only way one can compare an animal from one operation to another without environmental biases. When we evaluate EPD’s we need to remember that bigger is not always better! For example, if we like moderate cattle, we probably don’t want to use a bull with top 1% yearling weight as his daughters are probably going to be too big for our operation. With the use of Genomics and DNA testing, we are able to better predict how a young sire will perform and how to best to use him. This is why we have DNA tested every female on the ranch and will continue to test every bull we sell. 4) Heifer Development: Heifer Development is typically one of the highest costs of an operation. At first, we fell into this trap like everyone else; however, after thinking it over we decided to make changes.

Page 3 Over the last couple years, we have been weaning our heifers off for 60 days on nothing except a Riomax tub and long stem hay. After being weaned for 60 daysthe replacement heifers are returned to the cow herd to graze through the winter. 30 days prior to breeding we sort the heifers off and feed them some long stem hay prior to turn out on summer pasture. Due to our management strategy, our heifers are fairly light at the start of breeding season and we do see a slight decrease in the first year’s breed up. However, we have found that the females that do breed are much better cattle in the long run and this allows natural selection to run its course. ShayLe’s Grandpa always says “Your first loss is your cheapest loss.” If that is true (which I believe it is) why not let those females fall out prior to them having generations of negative influences on your program? As seedstock producers it is our obligation and responsibility to make genetic improvements in order for the beef industry to succeed. It is obvious that we are making great strides in terminal traits such as marbling, ribeye area and growth. I firmly believe that these traits are vital and it is obvious when looking at our cattle that we breed for this as well. However, I believe

Big Country Genetics

that it’s also our obligation to produce cattle that will work for our customers and that are forced to perform in as harsh; or harsher conditions, than our customers. If we cannot

www.bigcountrygenetics.com

make cattle that adapt and way to see ones quality perform than we are not compared to another’s. doing our job as seedstock producers. Truly, *** Jimmy & ShayLe Where there is no selection and pressure, there is no clear Ken & Jenny Stewart

Black Summit Cattle Company In 1989, Black Summit Cattle was established by myself and loving wife Tracy, when I decided to return home from managing ranches in Oregon and once again call the Big Horn Basin home. Through nearly 45 years of learning the “do’s and don’ts” of the cattle business, our breeding philosophies have evolved over time; and like most, we realize that balanced trait selection is key to profitability! You’ll commonly hear me say, “We all like good looking cattle that we are proud to show-case to our friends; however, if they don’t come easy, wean heavy and stay in the herd, it’s hard to maintain profitability and ultimately sustainability.” The drivers of our profitability in North-Western Wyoming are no

different than our customers. We believe a cow has to lay down, have a calf, get up and take care of it – it’s just that plain and simple! And let’s not forget in order to be profitable, she’s got to wean off a healthy calf, put it on the truck heavy, and do so while maintaining flesh and breeding back on time. We’ve found that in order to achieve success, our cows need to be moderate, good looking cattle that are balanced in both genotype and phenotype Good looking cattle have always been in vogue, but with the advancements we have made in technology we’ve come to understand that science is also a crucial component to a profitable cow. We now DNA test every cow in our program to achieve enhanced EPD’s. From traveling the countryside, we’ve also become very concerned

with the basic functionality found in most cattle today. Foot and udder quality have always been a priority for us, and will continue to be a focal point moving forward. It’s humbling what this way of life can teach you, and we’ve come to understand what’s truly important. Tracy and I are blessed with three amazing kids and their spouses, and now our five grandsons. We are thankful to have our son Gavin and his family at the ranch full time now as they are a vital part of our operation. Doing life alongside one another has made it easy to develop the Black Summit Cattle mission statement, “To be obedient in using ALL of God’s blessings to help improve the lives of our customers and our community.” This belief system drives us to not only raise seedstock quality animals

that are more efficient and functional for our customers, but to also feed and sustain our communities! We believe that if we can eliminate and fix problem traits within our cattle, our customers can enjoy the benefits of more time and money for their families and communities. There is no doubt that the convenience traits of calving ease and the maternal essence it takes to stick around for years are sometimes over looked for the bragging rights of excessive growth

and inefficiencies; but, bigger is not always better and maximum is very rarely optimum. Our goal is to make cattle that aren’t necessarily the best at anything, except being good at everything! Blessings and may we use all we’ve been givin’ to help you and yours! Humbly, Quin & Tracy and Gavin & Kacee LaFollette

Cow-Herd Nutrition By Ken Stewart

I; for one, am not interested in falling into the trap that so many seedstock breeders are in. Too often producers pamper their cattle to extremes and feel as if they only ranch becasue they love it; but therefore they are left without making any money. We do love ranching; but it is also our business, and it has to be profitable, period. After sampling nearly every product line available on thousands of cattle over several years, we finally had one product come though as the clear winner -- Riomax360®. I can’t say that this is the silver bullet, or that you don’t have to do everything else right. But I can share with you what I’ve seen in using this great product, and most importantly, how it positively impacted our economic model at XL Ranch. What Is Riomax360®? First of all, you have to change your train of thought; this is not a direct-fed supplement. Riomax® is highly concentrated with low consumption by design. That means that their consumption ranges from 1/8 (.125) pound to a max of 1/3 (.33) pound per head per day. Riomax® is fundamentally different because it utilizes Indirect Supplementation Technology, powered by a proprietary Nutrizorb® digestion pack. Please note that this

is very different than the traditional direct-fed supplements available on the market today. Digestion Pack: I could write a whole article on Nutrizorb® and the multi-component digestion powerhouse that it is with 19 different components consisting of prebiotics, probiotics, yeast, FungiFuel™, and more. This unique blend, offered exclusively by Riomax®, is instrumental in feeding and increasing the good bug population in the rumen, which ultimately enables the cow to get more from every mouthful of whatever you have to feed her. Mineral Technology: Another advantage that pays dividends is the Esqort® mineral technology. This blend has 100% rumen bypass on all key trace minerals, including CU, ZN, MN, and SE. By allowing the mineral we purchase to actually get into the blood stream, we are giving ourselves the absolute best chance to achieve the results we’re striving for. Esqort® also works in harmony with Nutrizorb® to ensure that we don’t have any adverse effect on gut health or loss of microbes that you may experience by feeding traditional minerals that

What Results Does Riomax® Provide? I’ve personally experienced continual success by using Riomax®. Some of the results include: 1). High conception rates, even in a short 45-day breeding window. 2). Maximizing available forages with a rather hefty stocking rate, and still maintaining very good range conditions. 3). Modest hay consumption, while still maintaining ideal body condition scores and herd health. 4). A significant decrease in calf health challenges, including scours and respiratory diseases. Clarks Fork Angus & Simmental

Clarks Fork Angus & Simmental call the dry sagebrush hills above the Clarks Fork River Valley, in South-Central, Montana home. We are family owned and operated by Christopher and Kelli Coombe along with our daughters Kyelynn and Cori. Everyone is involved in the day to day work of the ranch, and we are beyond proud of our daughters’ involvement with school, sports, 4H, and FFA. The girls show a real interest in the cattle and have successfully started managing their own small herds. From the beginning, our operation has primarily been commercial. We started from scratch with the purchase of thirty pairs from a neighbor. Our registered herd was established in 2008 when we bought a retiring producer’s herd. We have built and improved our cow herd by AI-ing our entire cow-base; both registered and com-

mercial, to proven maternal genetics and implemented a strict culling protocol. With generations of AI-ing, exceptional cow families have developed through both our registered and commercial herds. In the spring of 2019, we had an amazing opportunity to lease and move onto another local ranch. This move brought BIG changes to our program. The additional grass allowed us to double our cow herd and granted us the ability to graze more and feed less! At Clark’s Fork Angus & Simmental, our main mission is building moderated framed, functional and profitable BEEF cows. Someone once said, “A good bull is a byproduct of a good cow.” Our goal is to help our customers better their program, whether that’s adding pounds or breeding better females. We believe functional cows are docile, hold their condition, and breed

back year after year while raising a big calf. One of the biggest expenses for an operation is replacement costs. That is why breeding for longevity is crucial for an operation. Cows must have good structure and udders to last and be trouble free. Profitable cows must have the performance to raise a heavy, healthy calf while also being profitable in the respect that they work for a living in their environment and require less labor and inputs. Our cows not only survive but honestly thrive in a harsh, dry environment. Our registered cows are ran alongside our commercial cows year round. The cows range-calve out on their own starting midApril. Because of this, we pay attention to calving ease, although we don’t focus on birth weight. Again, this stresses the importance of a functional mother cow. Simmental cat-

tle have greatly helped us achieve our mission and goals. The Sim-Angus combination, through heterosis provides an increase of maternal function and terminal pounds. The Sim-Angus cows have higher fertility, more longevity and added fleshing ability. They are also profitable with more growth, muscle and feed efficiency. All of this is done in a uniform, moderate framed cow. Best of all, heterosis is FREE! We will always maintain our Angus based herd; building on their qualities and mothering ability, but have found that adding the Continental cross gives us our most desired outcome. Our marketing strategy was simple at first. Through the support of local ranchers we were able to private treaty various groups of bulls and bred heifers. Since then, our demand has grown through repeat customers and word of mouth. We are

now thrilled to be joining the Big Country Genetics Bull Sale in Powell, Wyoming. By adding the BCG Sale to our program, we have moved our calving back to mid-April and plan to offer age-advanced, two-year old bulls in the sale. This allows us the opportunity to slowly develop the bulls on a high forage diet and offer diversity to the April sale! In addition to our bulls, we are ecstatic to be implementing an embryo transplant program utilizing proven donors to meet the demand we’ve seen grow for our bred heifers! Our cattle are our pride and joy, and we are delighted to further grow and advance our program! Here’s to new adventures! Sincerely, Chris, Kelli, Kyelynn & Cori Coombe

RightChoice & RightMate By Marty Ropp

Genetic providers have used strong genetic prediction tools (EPDs) for making, then offering customers consistent genetic progress for a long time. In the past few years, improved EPDs, bolstered by the inclusion of genomic evaluation have been a bigger step forward, making the potential for progress even greater. Now there is RightChoice, a proven, technology driven program that simply provides for

more rapid improvement and potential for success from your investment. The best news is, RightChoice technology is much simpler to use than past tools and just might change the way we buy genetics. In the past, with 20 or more EPD categories, overwhelming amounts of raw data and multiple index offerings to evaluate in a short time the potential to use selection information to its best result has

been possible but difficult. RightChoice is designed as a simple to use sorting tool for commercial producers in the selection of new sires or females all based on customer genetic needs and production goals. The sophisticated technology is on the inside of RightChoice, combining advanced knowledge of high impact genomics with the proven database power of EPDs. All you need to do is evaluate and pick the bulls you like

www.bigcountrygenetics.com

from the group with the genetic logo that fits your needs. Defining your bull needs and projected purpose is the first step. Do I plan to keep daughters as replacements, will the bull need to breed heifers, how much growth and carcass do I need to meet my shortterm financial goals? Producers should and do ask themselves these questions with any seedstock purchase. RightChoice then sorts the bulls that will fit the job they are asked to do more simply than any other technology. For heifer bulls, just find the ACE logo bulls and then select the ones you like. When maternal progress is the primary goal, look for a G+. Want to promote maximum growth and pay-weight, ATM bulls will drive income forward as soon as next year’s calf crop. The bottom line is that with a simple sort that includes both specific genomic combinations and EPD thresholds to help assure value, you can be more confident in the potential to achieve goals. After the boxes are checked, simply pick the bulls you’d like to take home with the logos that fit your operational needs. RightChoice technology will not only push the traits and profit forward that you ask it to, but because of the way it sorts sires, it can reduce variation and inconsistency in your calf crop as well. For example, with ACE logo bulls, not only can you expect reduced dystocia, but the birth weights responsi-

ble for most of the challenges will be less variable. That means more calves born close to the average weight and far fewer extreme calves that either create issues for your heifers or are unreasonably small. We can’t always control the genes present in the cow herd, but we can make sure that you don’t get problem genes from your seedstock purchase. We are asked frequently, are 2 logos better than 1? It is a logical thought for sure, but in this case the answer is a solid maybe not, depending on breeding objectives. G+ logos are assigned to bulls with the most balanced trait improvement potential and prioritize maternal traits like longevity and fertility. Add an ACE logo and expect similar improvements with accredited calving ease, but weaning growth may not be enhanced. When an ATM logo accompanies the G+, advanced growth will come along with daughters that offer solid fertility. The tradeoff is ATMs are not for heifers and mature cow size may increase, which may or may not fit your needs? ATM logo alone means breed no heifers. Daughters should grow very fast, but may not have as much longevity as replacements. Again, with some simple planning based on production needs and goals, the technology behind the RightMate logos will point you in the direction you want to go, simply.

of God speak through our lives – in our households, businesses and politics. He said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Amen Father. Amen. Further, our Lord Jesus made it super easy for us when He said, “The greatest of these is love.” How hard is that? Just love! Go and love! Meet people exactly where they are; just as they are and love them! There is your ministry; this is the REAL goal. A great Baptist preacher named Charles Spurgeon said, “Love in such a way that men may recognize that you have been with Jesus.” Beloved, stop for a moment. He didn’t say anything about being perfect! I cannot imagine a better goal, but I am also keenly aware of the bitter reality of our fallen humanity – love anyway. Find healing in Him, and let the brokenness of the past be a gateway

for people who understand your scars. Serve them. Love them. Lead them. Serve Him. Love HIM. Be led by HIM. We will see people who are broken in ways that we can’t imagine, perhaps in deplorable ways. Praise God that we don’t carry that cross… meet them where they are; and, love them anyway. Serve them. Love them. Lead them. Again, I ask…. How do we DO life? What are we going to leave behind? Legacy is still the answer… but I resign myself. Unless I have a legacy of love rooted in Christ, nothing else will matter. In fact, without the love of Christ, the blessings of this world echo with deafening emptiness. While I hope for many of the other things that light my fire, without the love of Christ freely offered to me…and freely passing through me, I have nothing at all. Final answer… Love! Just love them anyway! Let the Legacy Begin!
